Blumhouse Television is developing a seven-part Indian anthology series with executive producer Dina Dattani.
Each feature-length episode will explore the themes and mythology set against the backdrop of local Indian festivals, with the project specifically targeting the Indian audience.
The U.S. studio previously enjoyed success in India with genre fare such as critically-acclaimed Netflix Original series “Ghoul,” and most recently “Betaal,” produced in partnership with Sk Global Entertainment and Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment.
Dattani, a former media and entertainment lawyer who moved into production, is overseeing the series. Her producing credits include the Sundance Grand Jury-nominated film “Brahman Naman,” written by Variety correspondent Naman Ramachandran, “Hotel Salvation” and “Bombay Velvet.”
“Developing this anthology in partnership with Blumhouse, whose signature in this genre is second to none, has been really exciting, adding thrills, mystery and intrigue to our stories which are set against the backdrop of several Indian folk and regional festivals.

Q: 'At the start of the film we make it very clear men are making this film but we are completely aware of our shortcomings as a gender' “I feel very strongly about music because I'm a failed musician – which is why I'm making films, vicariously I'm living my life as a musician through filmmaking,” Brahman Naman director Qaushiq Mukherjee – Aka Q – tells me when I catch up with him to talk about his film after its European premiere at Edinburgh International Film Festival.
Certainly, he looks the part, wearing sunglasses inside a hotel on a fairly grey afternoon. Music plays a key role in his coming-of-age comedy that mixes quiz brain geekery with a trio of lads' desire to lose their virginity, driving the action on and sometimes acting as a 'chorus' between scenes. Q says his filmmaking process begins with the music.

Naman Ramachandran and Steve Barron. Barron: The more Naman said about the film the more I said, "Put it down on paper, this could go somewhere, this could be interesting." He writes so fearlessly and honestly. Photo: Courtesy of Edinburgh International Film Festival Eighties-set coming-of-age comedy Brahman Naman, which premiered at Sundance, tells the story of the titular character (played by Shashank Arora), a college champ quizzer and his group of mates who despite their impressive brain power spend most of their time thinking with a rather more basic part of their anatomies. Writer Naman Ramachandran has drawn heavily on his own memories of growing up in Bangalore in the Eighties - including a very specific masturbation technique with a fish aquarium - to examine what life and lust was like for youngsters before the advent of the internet. I caught up with Ramachandran and the film's producer Steve Barron...

"At least she spoke to you face-to-face." Netflix has unveiled a trailer for a film called Brahman Naman, an indie coming-of-age sex comedy set in the 80's in India. Actor Shashank Arora plays Naman, a witty, nerdy kid at Bangalore University who spends most of his time on the quizzing circuit with his two friends Ajay and Ramu, played by Tanmay Dhanania and Chaitanya Varad. The three of them want nothing more than to lose their virginity and try their hardest to make it happen. This looks kooky and hilarious, and seems to be a refreshingly unique take on the typical coming-of-age comedy. And it's in English. Have fun! Here's the first official trailer for Qaushiq Mukherjee's Brahman Naman, direct from YouTube: Brahman Naman is a comedy film set in the 80's and revolves around the misadventures of Naman and his friends in their quest to lose their virginity.

After watching Brahman Naman, the latest film from the Indian director known simply as Q, I had the opportunity to sit down with him along with the writer, Naman Ramachandran and three of the actors from the film; Sid Mallya, Shashank Arora, and Tanmay Dhanania. I enjoyed my conversation with the filmmakers just as much as I enjoyed the film itself. Alex Koehne: One of the movies you are most well-known for is Gandu, which was considered controversial due in part to its use of nudity and sexual situations. Instead of shying away from this, you open up Brahman Naman with the main character masturbating into a refrigerator. Q: Why beat around the bush? I hope that pun was intended. Q: Let's say it was....

Well it certainly seems to be falling all in place for very suave and edgy Mallya Jr. on his film front. Sid, who is currently completing his degree at The Royal Central School of Drama in London, is over the moon about his debut film: not just premiering but also competing in the World Cinema dramatic competition at the Sundance Film Festival.
The film is directed by Calcutta – based Q, quite the darling of the indie circuit having caused a stir with groundbreaking hits like Tasher Desh and Gandu. The film is produced by Steve Barron who’s other comedies include Dan Akroyd’s ‘Coneheads’ and ‘Mike Bassett – England Manager’. The script is by Naman Ramachandran.
The movie’s plot is centered on the quiz team scene in India in the early eighties and is a smart teen comedy in the vein of the British hit ‘The In-betweeners’ from 2011. Apparently...

The Sundance Film institute has released the line-up of film for the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. Going to Sundance is one of my favorite events of the year. I love going because you never know what kind of movies you're going to see. Sometimes they are great films that amaze and entertain, other times they completely suck ass, but that's all part of the fun of going to the festival. It's an awesome experience for any hardcore movie geek, and if you ever get a chance to go, you need to.
The event takes place in Park City, Utah next year from January 21st to the 31st. It looks like there's a great line-up of movies at next year's event. My favorite portion of the event is the Midnight section because it deals more with geeky genre type movies, but I also enjoy the various sections of other line-ups.
