The 10 Things I Hate About You cast probably didn’t know it then, but the actors in the 1999 teen rom-com would get their breakout role. In the 25 years since its release, 10 Things I Hate About You has become a cult classic and a career highlight for its actors.
On the surface, 10 Things I Hate About You doesn’t sound like a recipe for success. A William Shakespeare play reworked into a teen comedy featuring a cast of mostly unknown actors? Critics didn’t fall head over heels for it in 1999, but the movie’s appeal has grown over time and attracted new generations of fans (even if sequel plans failed). And if the 10 Things I Hate About You cast was unknown then, now there is no mistaking the talent of stars like Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Before joining The Walking Dead universe as Pearl Thorne in The Ones Who Live, Lesley-Ann Brandt starred in a variety of roles for TV and film. The South African actor is well-known for taking on projects in horror, fantasy, and other traditionally “nerdy” genres, having appeared in shows like Gotham, The Librarians, and most notably Lucifer.
With a variety of roles under her belt, here’s where else you’ve seen Lesley-Ann Brandt before.
Lucifer
As mentioned previously, Brandt is most known for her role as Lucifer’s (Tom Ellis) right-hand Mazikeen in the hit TV series Lucifer. Mazikeen a.k.a. Maze is known for her fierce loyalty, though she sometimes struggles to adapt her brash nature to the human world. Brandt does a phenomenal job of portraying Maze’s growth from demon with a penchant for sadistic torture to a slightly more vulnerable and human demon with a penchant for sadistic torture.

The recent deluge of top-tier genre fare emerging from Thailand has been a joyous sight to behold for horror fanatics as the country has positioned itself quite nicely in the past years as a major player in the market. From the found-footage supernatural nightmare in The Medium, ghost movies in Inhuman Kiss, Cracked, and Ghost Lab to the giant monster throwback Leio, the country's output has allowed them to rise significantly in the crowded Asian scene with plenty looking for Japan, South Korea, and to a lesser extent Indonesia and China for their film output. Now, fresh on the heels of his recent hit The Maid, Lee Thongkham teams up with Aqing Xu for a new monster movie called The Lake which is now available through Epic Pictures.

A big budget Thai/Chinese co-production, this year’s brand new monster movie The Lake has now unleashed a brand new trailer, this one equipped with English subtitles.
It’s also a much better trailer all around, giving us several clear shots of the incredible practical monster designed by artist Jordu Schell (Cloverfield, The Thing, Starship Troopers, The Mist, Feast, Avatar, Men in Black, Planet of the Apes, The Cabin in the Woods, Predators).
The monster in The Lake was brought to life using practical life-sized animatronics alongside CGI, and the glimpses we get of the beast here are absolutely jaw-dropping to behold.
In The Lake, “One child brings back a strange egg, soon realizing that it’s a monster egg. It emerged from the lake, and it now wants to kill everyone in the whole town.”
The film released theatrically in Thailand on August 18, with no U.S. date at this time.

Disney continues to grow its presence in Canada with the appointment of Stephanie Azam as director of content for streaming service Disney+.
Although no Canadian originals have been announced for the streaming service to date, the hire suggests that could soon change.
Azam joins Disney following a year-long gig with the independent Canadian distribution company MK2/Mile End, where she served as VP of development and acquisitions. The Quebec-based company created the role to expand in English Canada last September in hopes of deepening domestic and international partnerships.
This April, Montreal-based Sphère Média acquired the company but kept the Toronto and Montreal teams in place.
Previously, Azam spent 12 years at Telefilm Canada as the National Feature Film Executive, where she oversaw production financing for all of English Canada. Before joining Telefilm as a marketing and distribution specialist in 2008, she spent five years as the director of theatrical marketing at Zeitgeist Films in New York.

Julian Doucet was always told that his life should be made into a movie or TV show after he’d tell anyone his story—he’s a gay man who was just 20 years old when he had a daughter. While he and the baby’s mother gave the baby up for adoption, they remained in her life.
“I always felt a little conflicted about it just because it’s not just my story,” Doucet told me recently over Zoom from his home in Montreal. “It also belongs to her so I kind of wanted to wait until she was an adult in some ways. So when she graduated from university, I kind of was like, ‘Maybe I can do that show now.’”

The moody mountainscape surrounding the Fairmont Banff Springs hotel may have been tailor-made for the British Columbia-shot thriller “Yellowjackets,” which was honored at this week’s Banff World Media Festival, but the real survival drama was raging between Canadian broadcasters and the streaming giants.
The tension was palpable among the country’s legacy broadcasters and the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, both of which were prominent at the 43rd edition of the festival. While this fraught dynamic — which has ramped up as the digital platforms launch originals divisions in Canada — is nothing new, relations are coming to a head as the much-ballyhooed Bill C-11, the proposed update to Canada’s dated Broadcasting Act, is fiercely debated in Parliament.
The bill, which is also referred to as the Online Streaming Act, allows Canada’s media watchdog, the Crtc, to regulate streaming services, which will need to meet Canadian content...
