NEW DELHI -- The 8th annual International Film Festival Mumbai will be held 23-30 March according to a statement Saturday by organizers, independent body Mumbai Academy of Moving Images. IFFM will showcase 100 films from 38 participating countries with French filmmaker Christophe Barratier"s Chorus opening the festival while Canadian-Indian director Deepa Mehta's Water will be the closing film. Remake mart a boon to forum

PARIS -- The 5th International Cinema and Literature Forum, to be held April 7-9 in Monaco, is anticipating a spike in interest thanks to the addition of the world's first remake market, organizers said Monday. The book-to-film event has included a literary adaptation market since 2002, where available book and comic rights are touted to film and TV producers. But the addition this year of the remake mart is drawing a wider cross-section of industry professionals. "We expect to end up with 100-120 registered at the market, which is almost double last year," said event president Claire Breuvart. "There's been an explosion in literary adaptations and remakes in recent years. There are even categories for best adaptation now at the major award ceremonies like the Cesars," Breuvart observed. She cited Jacques Audiard's award-winning The Beat That My Heart Skipped and Christophe Barratier's Oscar-nominated Les Choristes as two recent examples of hit French movies that are remakes. »

French court hears filmmaker's piracy suit

PARIS -- French filmmaker Christophe Barratier, who achieved international recognition with his film The Chorus, saw his lawsuit against six French companies charging "complicity with piracy" go to hearing Wednesday at the Paris High Court. Barratier is accusing telecommunications providers Neuf Telecom, AOL France and Telecom Italia France, state-owned French rail corporation SNCF, credit card company Finaref and state-owned lottery La Francaise des Jeux of complicity by advertising on Internet sites that provided links for the illegal downloading of films, including The Chorus. Barratier, a director, writer and producer, said in a press conference Wednesday that he filed the case not for monetary gain, but to "set an example" he hoped would serve to deter companies from directly or indirectly supporting piracy. »
