The Beatles and The Rolling Stones remain two of the most influential classic rock bands. The Fab Four sent several songs to the top of the charts, and the Stones also scored several No. 1 hits. Though not mentioned in the same breath, Dire Straits accomplished something the Beatles and Stones never could.

Dire Straits lead guitarist and singer Mark Knopfler was nearly 30 years old when the band released their self-titled debut album in 1978. The single “Sultans of Swing” performed well on both sides of the Atlantic, but it was nothing compared to what happened seven years later.
They made seven other albums in their career, but Dire Straits’ 1985 record Brothers in Arms was practically a greatest hits package.

Today's magic number is 31. Can you believe it took Christian Bale 31 movies to win Oscar's love?
He debuted in the Steven Spielberg film Empire of the Sun (1987) which was nominated for six Oscars so they knew of him straight from the get-go. But nothing seemed to do it -- not literary adaptations (Little Women, The Portrait of a Lady), neither relationship dramas (Metroland, Laurel Canyon), nor glam rock epics (Velvet Goldmine). Of course it didn't happen for superheroes or serial killers (Batman, American Psycho) but even war dramas (Empire of the Sun, Rescue Dawn) didn't do it. And then suddenly The Fighter (2010) did. He crushed his competition on the way to a win.
Sometimes not being nominated but being routinely excellent is a good way to build crazy momentum for a win. Which working actor do you think is heading straight to an Oscar win as soon as they're finally nominated?...

Here's to Christian Bale, future Oscar winner (unless this King's Speech thing *really* gets out of hand), on his 37th birthday! He might even win the SAG Award tonight on his birthday.
It's hard to remember that he's not even 40 yet. He's been in the movies for so long!
Christian Bale, the 12 year old star of "Empire of the Sun"
Since that auspicious debut in Steven Spielberg's Empire (1987) which was nominated for 6 Oscars (but strangely didn't catch fire in any of the top categories, despite being a World War II epic) it's been quite a trip: He assisted a royal Oscar powerhouse (Henry V); ended his teenage years dancing (Swing Kids) and singing (Newsies); got curiously soft and swoony (Pocahontas, Little Women); was overcome by hormonal confusion in his mid 20s (Velvet Goldmine, Metroland, A Midsummer Night's Dream); played God and then the Devil back to back in his late 20s (Mary,...

It occurred to me as I put together today's Scenes (Songs) We Love, that today's selection is all about change. Let me explain: to start with we've got the film, the 1997 drama Metroland, which is about a man questioning his decisions in life, and then we have our song, Peaches, by the genre-resistant UK band The Stranglers. Finally, you've got your actor, the one and only Christian Bale, an actor who has never been afraid to try something new with his career. It may seem strange to think it now, but would anyone have predicted back then that the guy from Swing Kids would become the Caped Crusader?
Metroland was directed by Philip Saville, and is based on Julian Barnes' novel of the same name. The film follows Chris (Bale), a young man having a quarter-life crisis brought on by the return of his childhood friend Toni, who chose...

From Pacman to Public Enemies, he's had more ups and downs than most other actors of his generation. Christian Bale has careened between extreme highs and deep lows, in the view of the folks at MovieFill, and they decided that a rollercoaster was the most apt visual metaphor for his career. A reduced-size version can be seen above.
They squeeze most of his films into the chart, though they left out a few. Before his sensational role in Mary Harron's American Psycho, he was very appealing in Metroland and got good notices in Todd Haynes' Velvet Goldmine; pre-Batman Begins / The Dark Knight, he was fun to watch as a frisky villain in John Singleton's Shaft and an uptight, would-be psychiatrist in Laurel Canyon. I don't agree with every notation in the chart. Harsh Times, for example, is cited as one of his "lows," but Bale was riveting.

Actor Christian Bale's fiery temper was triggered by the pressures of fame, his former assistant has claimed.
The Dark Knight star, 34, was arrested earlier this week (ends25Jul08) over claims he assaulted his mother and sister on the eve of The Dark Knight premiere in London.
And ex-employee Harrison Cheung blames Bale's early start in Hollywood for his temper.
He says, "When he filmed a movie called Metroland (1997), his nickname was Tandy because he was always throwing tantrums.
"He would yell until he was red in the face. It was very intimidating.
"Fame started to change Christian. He went from earning GBP100,000 ($200,000) a movie to earning millions."
Cheung believes Bale, who also played a convincing American Psycho in the chilling movie adaptation of Brett Easton Ellis' novel, is not that far removed from his Batman character.
He explains, "People say Christian is a great Batman because he brings a darkness to the role. But I know the real Christian and I know the darkness is not an act."
Cheung also claims Bale never really wanted a career in Hollywood and was forced into acting by his father, Davd.
The former assistant insists the Batman Begins star was insecure and lacked confidence.
He adds, "He'd never trained as an actor and told me there were demons inside him saying, 'You can't do this. You're not good enough.'
"He thought about quitting many times. Then he'd say, 'But who would support my family?'...
