Throughout his career, Simon Rumley has consistently pushed himself as a filmmaker, and his latest cinematic endeavor, Fashionista, is yet another example of the writer/director evolving as a visual storyteller, as his unforgettable mystery thriller unconventionally explores the darker sides of desire and obsession. Featuring an outstanding ensemble including Amanda Fuller, Ethan Embry, Alex Essoe, and Eric Balfour (amongst others), Fashionista recently played as part of the Fantasia International Film Festival’s impressive 2017 slate.
Recently, Daily Dead spoke with Rumley about his approach to Fashionista, and he discussed how he viewed the project as his statement on consumerism and also chatted about reuniting with Fuller (who starred in Rumley’s Red, White & Blue) to take on her challenging role in this film. Rumley also talked about collaborating with Fashionista producer Tim League and how he managed to assemble the rest of his top-notch cast.

Following its world premiere last year at the SXSW Film Festival, Johnny Frank Garrett’s Last Word is now out on home media (including DVD and VOD platforms) from Momentum Pictures, and to commemorate the film's release, we caught up with director Simon Rumley in our latest Q&A feature to discuss adapting the tragic real-life story, the film's shooting schedule, what initially drew him to the project, and more.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Simon. What drew you to the real-life story of Johnny Frank Garrett?
Simon Rumley: My pleasure! I first watched the documentary called The Last Word by Jesse Quackenbush, which is an amazing viewing experience. Jesse’s an attorney, so it dealt much more with the legalese of the situation and thus the unfairness of the trial and the multiple inconsistencies that were put forward by the prosecution. I...

Told against the backdrop of the Live Music Capital itself, Simon Rumley’s newest feature film, Fashionista, highlights addictive personalities using an unlikely medium.
I sat down with Simon and the cast (Amanda Fuller, Ethan Embry, Alex Essoe, and Devin Bonnee) for an interview during Fantastic Fest- here are some of the highlights from discussing the treacherously seductive film:

Quiet Earth: All of the characters seem to have different addictions- what made you want to create such a film?

Throughout his career, filmmaker Simon Rumley has created some of the most uniquely compelling genre efforts we’ve seen. From The Living and the Dead to Red White & Blue to his segments in the anthologies Little Deaths and The ABCs of Death, Rumley has always found ways to push audiences into uncomfortable places. His latest, Johnny Frank Garrett’s Last Word, looks to do the same, but in a very different way, as the film is based on the real-life court case that found a young man guilty for the rape and murder of a nun in 1981 Texas, and the strange slew of deaths of those involved in his conviction after his execution.
While at the 2016 SXSW Film Festival, Daily Dead sat down with Rumley to discuss his latest project and heard more about his approach to the story, his thoughts on utilizing a script that he didn’t pen himself,...

Coming-of-age films are often centered around something big like death or sex, but most people grow up with hurdles built on somewhat lesser obstacles. Tony Phillips (Tony Vespe) is one such person. His high school years are winding down, his friends are moving on and his mother is reminding him that college life is right around the corner, but the challenge facing him right this minute is his absolute love for all things Halloween. Writer/director/wunderkind Emily Hagins is a twenty-year-old filmmaker who made her first feature at the age of 12 and scored a nationwide distribution deal with her last film, My Sucky Teen Romance. Her new movie, Grow Up, Tony Phillips, once again presents a casual, charming and youth-centric world, but she makes some important steps forward in her professional growth too. Unfortunately though it’s a bit of a “one step forward, one step back” situation. We first meet Tony trying to defend his...

Tony (Tony Vespe) likes Halloween. Like a lot. Like maybe too much for a high school senior. Tony obsesses over his costume all year long in preparation for the Halloween dance and trick or treating. Yep, that's right, Tony still goes trick or treating. While he does not see anything wrong with that, his best friends do. Elle (Katie Folger) and Craig (Devin Bonnée) have presumably matured at a much faster rate than Tony. As strange as it is for them to see Tony acting so immaturely, it is equally disorienting for Tony to have his friends change right in front of his eyes. It is pretty sad that at this juncture in his life, Tony actually seems to have more in common with the kid he babysits -- Mikey (Caleb Barwick) -- than anyone his own age. Nonetheless, Tony has no intentions of changing.

Grow Up, Tony Phillips, the new comedy from Emily Hagins, made its world premiere at SXSW last week, in the Vimeo Theater of the Austin Convention Center. The audience was eager and excited to see the latest project by this young Austin-based director.
Tony Phillips (Hagins film regular Tony Vespe) is an easygoing senior in high school who still dresses up for Halloween and loves trick-or-treating. He spends his fall months thinking up costume ideas, even sketching concepts in his college prep class. He tells his mom that he sees these costumes as his "legacy."
His two closest pals are cool kid Craig (Devin Bonnee, another Hagins regular) and Elle (Katie Folger, also in Zero Charisma); both attempt to get Tony to get past this fascination with October 31. In one discussion with Tony, Elle comments, "You don't really worry about anything, do you?" They have their own reasons for worrying about Tony.

South by Southwest (SXSW) is just one of many film festivals, we here at Sound On Sight cover yearly. The fest, which takes place every spring in Austin, Texas, began in 1987, and has continued to grow in size every year. The fest announced the first wave of films back in early January, and the lineup included some highly anticipated films such as The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, Evil Dead, Downloaded and Spring Breakers. Now the full lineup has been announced, and it just might be one of the best lineups the festival has ever programmed.
SXSW takes place March 8-16 in Austin Texas. Here are just some of the films we are excited about.
Narrative Feature Competition – This year’s 8 films were selected from 1,191 submissions. Each film is a World Premiere.

You might have noticed a sad lack of reviews here recently from our contributor J.C. De Leon. That's because he's busy working as an associate producer on the movie Grow Up, Tony Phillips, the latest feature from Austin filmmaker Emily Hagins (My Sucky Teen Romance). The film shoot started Monday and is keeping J.C. pretty busy.
You too can be a part of this movie if you like ... onscreen as an extra. J.C. tells me that Grow Up, Tony Phillips will be filming the Friday/weekend after Thanksgiving at Eastside Memorial High School (1012 Arthur Stiles Road, not far from 183/Airport). They need young-ish extras who can portray teenagers realistically, and older extras who can portray teachers and chaperones, for scenes set at a high-school dance.
If you're interested in being an extra, contact J.C. at jc [at] arcanumpictures [dot] com and he'll give you the details. I wish...

Chicago – At age 12, Emily Hagins was literally surrounded by cameras. She was in the midst of directing her first feature, a zombie thriller entitled “Pathogen,” while a film crew chronicled her every move for their own documentary, “Zombie Girl: The Movie.” By the time production wrapped, Hagins was considered a budding sensation on the indie film circuit.
As the youngest director in the U.S., Hagins has displayed an enthusiasm, invention and craftsmanship that far exceeds that of many filmmakers three times her age. On the heels of her sophomore effort, a spooky mystery called “The Retelling,” Hagins has delved into the realm of comedy with a teen romance that deconstructs the “Twilight” phenomenon, while offering its own distinctive twist on the vampire genre. “My Sucky Teen Romance” stars Elaine Hurt as a girl looking to have a fling at the sci-fi/horror convention, SpaceCON, and ends up getting far more than she bargained for.

Parodies on horror can be hard to get right, as witnessed by Scary Movie. Personally I thought Scary Movie was quite good, it took Scream as the main focus and actually got a few laughs out of it, and then Scary Movie 2 came along which in a diluted form did the same but with the haunted house setting as the focus of the comedy. After that and after the Wayans brothers left the series it went downhill fast, even though the inclusion of Lesley Nielsen did save it to some extent. Now that we know that Scary Movie 5 is on its way I’m sure that most of us groaned at the thought of that dead dog being kicked once more.

No, we’re not talking Twilight but a vampire comedy called My Sucky Teen Romance by eighteen-year-old writer/director Emily Hagins of Austin, Texas. Don’t dismiss this as another spin-off teen vampire romance film. This work has so much bite that it has gained a theatrical distribution deal for the young filmmaker.
According to Variety, Mpi Media Group has snagged the North American rights to My Sucky Teen Romance. This is her third feature film and her first to get a distribution deal. The film is described as such:
“In a culture that is currently overrun with romanticized vampires, it is up to four geeky teenagers to defend their friend and beloved sci-fi convention from a group of very real, and very blood-thirsty vampires.”
The film stars Devin Bonnee (Chase), Tina Rodriguez (Inglourious Basterds) and Lauren Lee (The Retelling), and the new faces of Elaine Hurt and Patrick Delgado.

With the all-encompassing, alluring and blindingly bright "Twilight," it's sometimes hard to imagine other that there are other vampires in the coffin.
And that's when the purity of youth comes in handy.
According to Showblitz, Emily Hagins, the absurdly young, 18-year-old writer and director has secured her first distribution deal for the blood-sucking comedy, "My Sucky Teen Romance."
The film follows a group of teens (some of whom are vampires) as they begin to explore love while at a sci-fi convention. The young cast includes Devin Bonnee (NBC’s "Chase"), Tina Rodriguez ("Inglorious Basterds") and Lauren Lee ("The Retelling").
The film, which has a planned spring 2012 release, is the third feature from Hagins, who shot her first at (wince) age 12. (Really puts those arts & crafts efforts into perspective.)
Check out the newly released trailer below. "My Sucky Teen Romance" might just be campy, anti-"Twilight" tale we've been waiting for.
And that's when the purity of youth comes in handy.

Director: Emily Hagins
Writer: Emily Hagins
Cast: Devin Bonnée, Elaine Hurt, Tina Rodriguez, Lauren Lee, Tony Vespe, Patrick Delgado,
**Note: I am proud to call Emily Hagins my friend. She is one of few people I can call to go watch movies like Step Up 3D and Never Say Never and not feel embarrassed. However, my job here is to be objective and review her movie like I would any other. I would be doing Emily no favors by glossing over any issues I may have with her film.**
