For some reason, this Sunday’s “60 Minutes” will feature a lengthy interview with Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Green, the QAnon subscriber who has frequently expressed racist, antisemitic and homophobic rhetoric and elevated far-right conspiracy theories in ways that will feel both laughable and highly dangerous.
Lesley Stahl, America’s favorite prickly grandma (who we all loved seeing in “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On”) conducted the interview, which was promoted via a tone-deaf tweet that said the Georgia Republican “isn’t afraid to share her opinions, no matter how intense and in-your-face they are.”
And people have been responding to the tweet … appropriately.
Writer, journalist and big-time sneakerhead Russ Bengtson wrote, simply, “Delete your TV show,” with actor Paul Tefler tweeting, “Phew boy, how low you’ve sunk here.”

Hollywood is mourning the loss of Ed Asner on Sunday, reflecting on a career that not only left a mark in television and animation but also in the history of Hollywood labor.
In his illustrious career, Asner won seven Emmys, five of them for his iconic performance as Lou Grant on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and the spinoff “Lou Grant.” For younger fans, he was known for playing the voices of Hudson on the Disney cult classic “Gargoyles” and Carl Fredricksen in the Pixar Oscar winner “Up,” as well as Santa Claus in the Will Ferrell comedy “Elf” and other Christmas movies and specials.
But along with this, Asner served as president of the Screen Actors Guild during its pivotal strike in 1980, which led to a dramatic 32% increase in minimum salaries. His outspoken activism as a democratic socialist led to clashes with right-wing actors in Hollywood, including Charlton Heston,...

John Wells has set up two more shows at HBO Max including a lifeguard drama from Animal Kingdom writer Matt Kester and a series inspired by the book Things That Make White People Uncomfortable.
This comes after The West Wing and Shameless exec producer’s latest HBO Max project, pilot Red Bird Lane, named Susan Sarandon among its cast.
Both shows, which are in development, come from John Wells Production via his overall deal with Warner Bros. Television.
Ke Nui Road is a contemporary drama set on the North Shore of Oahu, focusing on the relationships between an elite crew of heavy-water lifeguards and the teens and young adults they mentor and train in the junior lifeguard program. The junior guards program embodies the beauty, the danger, the struggle, and the spirit of aloha — all centered on the ocean — that is modern Hawaii.

HBO Max is looking to make White People Uncomfortable: The streamer is adapting the book Things That Make White People Uncomfortable into a anthology series, TVLine has learned.
The book, written by retired NFL veteran and Super Bowl champion Michael Bennett with the help of Dave Zirin, is part memoir, part manifesto, as the socially conscious Bennett connects sports to the history of protest in the United States. The HBO Max adaptation “is a one-hour anthology series that has one goal: to make white people uncomfortable,” per the network’s description. “The theme of the first season is ‘the danger of white liberal thought.

In his latest rant against Donald Trump, San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich called the president a “soulless coward” for making a false claim that Barack Obama and George W. Bush did not contact the families of U.S. soldiers killed in battle. Speaking to The Nation’s Dave Zirin, Popovich lambasted Trump for his “never-ending divisiveness” and called him a “pathological liar” who is “unfit intellectually, emotionally, and psychologically” to be president. “This man in the Oval Office is a soulless coward who thinks that he can only become large by belittling others,” the coach continued. During its coverage of the Olympics’ opening ceremony Friday night, NBC aired an interview with two of the event’s co-directors, Brazilian filmmakers Fernando Meirelles (“City of God”) and Daniela Thomas (“Paris, je t’aime”)—though it’s unclear if anyone from the network was listening. Meirelles and Thomas explained the purpose behind the performance, which was to avoid the host nation’s usual navel-gazing (“talking about their belly buttons,” as Meirelles put it) in favor of global issues, connecting the history of Brazil to the specter of climate change.
Perhaps he meant that the navel-gazing would be reserved for NBC: With “Today Show” talent emceeing the spectacle at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracanã Stadium and Bob Costas plugging The Golf Channel from the main set, the telecast had the feeling of an especially expensive presentation at the Television Critics Association’s biannual get-together, laying on the salesmanship a little strong.

The Nation’s sports blogger Dave Zirin appeared on MSNBC with Tamron Hall on Thursday to discuss the measures the National Football League is taking to ensure prevent the league from signing potentially violent players like Aaron Hernandez in the future. Hernandez is currently facing charges of first-degree murder in the death of a 27-year-old semi-pro football player. Zirin said that the NFL’s plan to inspect players for gang tattoos will probably, and rightly, be construed as a racist policy improperly targeting African-American players.

"The options in the [Dominican Republic] are jail, the army, the factory, or baseball," a Domincan ballplayer once told sportwriter Dave Zirin. Zirin delivers the quote in his essay "Béisbol: How The Major Leagues Eat Their Young," and if you think the essay title is hyperbolic, you should see the new baseball documentary Pelotero. That language isn't nearly as figurative as it sounds.
In the Dominican Republic, ballplayers - peloteros - are raised like cash crops.
Pelotero is set to be released in theaters, itunes and on demand on July 13th. It's an important - and captivating - movie for baseball fans; it also delivers more tension and a stronger narrative arc than most documentaries, which makes it more than palatable for those who aren't baseball lovers. Baseball fans will recognize Bobby Valentine's name in the credits as an executive producer, and the non-fans will recognize John Leguizamo's voice doing the narration.

Imagine, for a moment, that you inhabited a sports media world devoid of context, one that immediately forgot precedent as soon as events occured. Imagine you could consume sports without seeing the history of the jerseys and the names on the backs of the jerseys every time you turned on the television. In short, imagine a world that is the antithesis of sports consumerism.
In that world, the Miami Heat are a fairytale story of success and overcoming adversity. Three go-to players, following the blueprint established by teams like the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers, decided to collaborate in an attempt to create a new dynasty. In just their first year playing together, a team with a remarkable lack of depth forged a surprising amount of chemistry and willed its way to the NBA Finals. They almost won it, too, but they lost to a veteran team with excellent coaching and passing.

The film won Outstanding Picture of the Year with Viola Davis winning Outstanding Actress and Octavia Spencer taking home the Outstanding Supporting Actress award. Taylor lost to "Jumping the Broom's" Salim Akil for Best Director because apparently, it's a better picture than "The Help!"
