With my background in blogging taking me pretty close to the world of comic books, I’ve known about Tony Lee and his witty little novel Dodge & Twist for some time. Lee’s big idea was to cook up a sequel to Oliver Twist that saw the Oliver and The Artful Dodger growing up apart and then reuniting for some action-adventure fun.
This basic notion is exactly the same for the film Dodge & Twist. Is this just a coincidence? Lee says not. He posted to his website about how he met Ahmet Zappa, one of the movie’s producers, back in 2007.
But I can say, definitively, that the story similarities are actually pretty slim. I can say this because I’ve read both. They start from the same place – which comes from Dickens in any case, so neither can lay claim to it – and then go off in very different directions.

Edgar Wright has been working to fill up his plate after departing Marvel.s Ant-Man. He quickly moved on to sci-fi film, Grasshopper Jungle and a rock-and-roll car chase film, entitled Baby Driver, and now his latest project will turn Charles Dickens. classic novel Oliver Twist into a steampunk adventure. The new project, entitled Dodge and Twist stems from Oliver Twist but is also based somewhat off of a book of the same title written by former Doctor Who comic writer, Tony Lee. The story will be a be set in 19th century, Victorian steampunk England and while it does share some qualities with Lee.s novel, Wright.s name attached promises a more comedic element to it. According to Film Divider, the project has been in the works for a while. First, screenwriter Cole Haddon of the Dracula TV series penned a script, then Simon Beaufoy (127 Hours and Slumdog...

Since the Ant-Man debacle Edgar Wright has hopped to Grasshopper Jungle, revved up Baby Driver and been at work on something new with his Cornetto compadre Simon Pegg. But it turns out Wright also had time to sneak in another job: he's been writing the screenplay for the Dickensian caper Dodge And Twist.Cole Haddon and Simon Beaufoy wrote previous drafts of the adventure, but Wright has apparently started the whole thing over from scratch. He reviewed the situation and thought it out again. The Sony project is a 'steampunk reimagining' of Dickens' gruel-requesting, Fagin-following workhouse urchin, picking up Oliver and the Artful Dodger 20 years after their first encounter. The two characters are found on opposite sides of the law and a plot is afoot to unburden the Queen of her crown jewels. Because you've got to pick a pocke... ah, never mind.Dodge And Twist is based on a novel by Tony Lee,...

Edgar Wright has reportedly performed a re-write on "Dodge and Twist," an action-centric, steampunk-style sequel to the Charles Dickens classic "Oliver Twist" says FilmDivider.
Sounding like it takes the Dickens story and gives it a Guy Ritchie's "Sherlock Holmes"-style twist, the action picks up two decades after the novel's events. Oliver is now a cop, and the Artful Dodger is still a thief.
The two face off as Oliver tries to stop the Dodger from stealing the Crown Jewels. Characters from the original tale, other Dickens novels and history will feature in the film including a young Queen Victoria.
Wright takes over from Cole Haddon and Simon Beaufoy who penned previous drafts. Despite the title, the film is Not based on Tony Lee's novel of the same name. Ahmet Zappa and Matt Tolmach will reportedly produce.

The new movie is directed by Lee Kirk and produced by Tim Perell, Alex A. Ginzburg and Tony Lee. "The initial seeds for 'Geezer' were planted a couple of years ago, when my son was born within weeks of my fortieth birthday," said Kirk. "Billie Joe Armstrong brings an exciting authenticity to the film. He's a dad, he's a musician and he's an incredible talent.

A new four-minute Doctor Who mini-episode, The Last Day, is now available on iTunes. Here's what Andrew made of it...
Warning: contains mild spoilers post-kitten.
On iTunes, in the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary section, you may notice that a minisode called The Last Day has been added to the list. Being under four minutes long, a spoiler-free review is somewhat tricky, so we'll summarise it thusly:
The Last Day is partly what you suspect it is going to be like from the title.
And now, on with the spoiler-ish version. We've put a picture of a kitten in between this paragraph and the next so you don't see anything you don't want to.
(This is a picture of Drax, in his thirteenth incarnation as a female kitty-cat, shortly before a gin-addled Davros repeatedly runs her over.)
The canonicity of the previous paragraph, as with all spin-off fiction,...

Fans of Battlestar Galactica are getting quite a treat, as Dynamite has announced that #1 New York Times bestselling author Tony Lee will be writing an origin story for Starbuck, based on the original NBC series from 1978.
Cosmicbooknews is reporting that the story will span a 4 issue mini-series, highlighting the early adventures of everyone’s favourite rogue, Lt. Starbuck.
“I’ve always liked the scoundrels,” says Lee. “Han Solo and Starbuck taught me a lot about life between them, so I probably owe a whole load of broken relationships and split lips during my teen years to them both.”
Battlestar Galatica: Starbuck will be the first publication in the franchise’s history to delve deeply into Starbuck’s background.
Lee continues, “When Dynamite came to me with a suggestion to do a Starbuck story, I jumped at the opportunity. Bar the fact that he was an amnesiac child after the attack on Umbra,...

This adaptation of the parody novel by Seth Grahame-Smith (also a graphic novel by Tony Lee) has seen its share of directors and cast members (David O Russel and Natalie Portman among them) come and go, and last we had heard it seemed to have finally given up and lay down to rest. But now Variety report that there's life in the old corpse yet, as a new director and star have come aboard. Burr Steers (Igby Goes Down, Charlie St. Cloud) has apparently signed on to direct, with 24 year old Mortal Instruments actress Lily Collins in final talks to play the female lead. Darko Entertainment and Panorama Media are producing with Panorama funding.

Re-imaginings and literary adaptations have become Hollywood’s bread and butter, and it doesn’t appear that trend will be slowing down anytime soon as Sony is updating the classic Charles Dickens’ tale Oliver Twist into a more adventurous story titled Dodge and Twist.
Dodge and Twist will feature characters from the original story, but will likely look very different from any adaptation of the novel we’ve seen before. The story takes place 20 years after the events of Oliver Twist, and features Oliver and Artful Dodger on opposite sides of the law, embroiled in an affair to steal the Crown Jewels.
The project is based on an idea by Ahmet Zappa and not on the book of the same name by Tony Lee. Lee’s graphic novel is set 12 years after Oliver Twist as opposed to 20 and revolves around Oliver being forced to assist the Artful Dodger in stealing...

Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist to grow up and take on the Artful Dodger in comic adventure movie Dodge and Twist
Hollywood is planning an adventure film set in the world of Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist, in which the angelic orphan re-encounters the Artful Dodger 20 years later.
Titled Dodge and Twist, studio Sony's revisionist take follows the same premise as Tony Lee's 2011 novel of the same name, though it will take a more comedic approach and is based on an original screenplay by Cole Haddon, writer of the forthcoming Us TV series Dracula. The film will portray the two characters as rivals on opposite sides of the law in Victorian London during an episode in which someone tries to steal the crown jewels. Inspector Spacetime is a self-paradoxical anomaly, which makes perfect sense. It’s only existed for a few months, but has also apparently been on television for nearly fifty years. Actor Travis Richey has played him for all of that time, for a grand total of less than two minutes of footage, and yet 11 actors have played the role, including Stephen Fry and Christopher Lee. As Travis explains it, “The best part is, Nothing is canon, and Everything is canon”.
After the character made its debut as a brief Doctor Who parody on NBC’s Community, the Internet got right to work fleshing out his history and adventures. A Tumblr feed was quickly created to serve as the main repository of the work, and photos from past episodes were quickly “discovered” and shared.

This weekend I was lucky enough to attend the inaugural London Super Comic Con at the ExCeL Centre in London. Exhibiting at the convention were Idw, publishers of the Doctor Who comic, attending their first major UK event.
On Saturday afternoon, the Idw team took to the stage for a panel entitled ‘Idw – The Year Ahead’. Over the course of forty-five minutes Idw Editor-in-Chief Chris Ryall introduced forthcoming highlights from Idw’s schedule and top of the list was the much discussed Doctor Who and Star Trek: The Next Generation crossover ‘Assimiliation²’.
Ryall was joined on the panel by, amongst others, long-time Doctor Who writer Tony Lee, who is ‘assisting’ writers Scott and David Tipton on the book (i.e. he’ll probably be keeping an eye on the ‘Britishness’ of the Doctor Who elements, which is interesting considering the steps taken to ‘Americanise’ the show in the last BBC season) and artist Jk Woodward,...

Interesting things going on as per usual in the world of comic books. First off, fans of the popular series Smallville - the series that told the tale of Clark Kent as he discovered and honed his talents before finally becoming Superman - will be happy to hear that the series finale last May won’t be the last we’ve heard from this continuity.
DC Comics has announced that it will be taking a page out of Joss Whedon’s book (seriously, the man is ahead of the curve in every way!) by launching the new title Smallville Season 11. The season will be written by Smallville writer Bryan Q. Miller, and will be released first digitally on April 13, 2012, with print versions being released on May 16. According to the press release:

In conjunction with BBC Worldwide Consumer Products and CBS Consumer Products, Idw Publishing is bringing the two iconic sci-fi properties together in a comic book for the first time.
The Doctor featured in the story is the current 11th incarnation, as played by Matt Smith on TV.
The 32-page book, called Star Trek The Next Generation / Doctor Who: Assimilation 2, will be in stores in May, 2012.
"By joining these two sci-fi powerhouses, fans will be taken on the ultimate adventure through time and space," said Liz Kalodner, executive vice president and general manager of CBS Consumer Products.

It sounds like something dreamed up in the fevered brain of a Comic-Con attendee: A sci-fi story that features an unholy alliance between "Star Trek's" Borg and "Doctor Who's" Cybermen.
That very story will arrive in May, courtesy of an Idw comic book. According to a Monday press release from the company, "Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who: Assimilation2" will feature "an unholy alliance" between the two villains. This sounds like an excellent idea for a comic book and, not just because two races of relentless, mechanized villains are better than one, but because an on-screen depiction of that kind of epic tale would be unworkable (especially given that "Tng" ended in 1994) and hugely expensive.
So who you gonna call when two mechanical races team up to bring disaster to humanity? Jean-Luc Picard and the Doctor, obviously.

More details have been announced on the upcoming Doctor Who/Star Trek: The Next Generation crossover from comic company Idw, including a pretty sweet image of the Enterprise D chasing the Tardis.
Reported by Newsarama, the project, released by Idw in conjunction with BBC Worldwide Consumer Products and CBS Consumer Products, will be titled Assimilation2 (don’t worry, you haven’t missed the first part… I’m pretty sure it’s meant to be Assimilation squared), and will feature enemies from both franchises, The Borg from Star Trek and the Cybermen from Doctor Who, teaming up to take over the galaxy. Both enemies share the same M.O. of converting people to their ranks, so that’s where the squared comes in. Captain Jean Luc Picard and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise find themselves joining forces with The Doctor and his companions to bring the alliance down.

While the upcoming new broadcast season is unusually light on superpowered scheduling, Fox Television is helping to plug the gap by snapping up DC Comics property The Spectre.
Maybe not the first title to come to mind when asking what book should next make the jump to TV but, with Smallville ending and Wonder Woman failing before it began, DC is looking to regain its share of your couch-time.
According to Deadline, the show has a script commitment from the studio, tapping Brandon Camp (John Doe, Love Happens) for writing and producing duties and feature veteran Bill Gerber as an executive producer.
Possessing the resurrected spirit of a murdered cop, the Spectre serves as the avatar of vengeance, punishing the guilty and protecting the innocent. First appearing in 1940's More Fun Comics 52 - and co-created by Superman founding father Jerry Siegel - the character could offer a potentially dark and violent drama.

With Hollywood turning more of its attention to the world of graphic novels for inspiration, I'll cast the spotlight on a new comic book each week that has the potential to pack a theater or keep you glued to your television screens. At the end of each "Adapt This" column, you'll also find some thoughts from the industry's top comic creators about the books they'd like to see make the jump from page to screen.
This Week's Book: Guerillas by Brahm Revel
The Premise: Meek, gun-shy Private John Francis Clayton is on his first tour of duty in Vietnam when his platoon is ambushed by enemy forces. Surviving out of sheer cowardice, he discovers that he's the only survivor of the massacre, left alone in the jungle with enemies all around him. All is not lost, however, as he soon encounters the simian soldiers of an experimental squad of military-trained chimpanzees.

Whether they live in the U.K. or the U.S., comics creators in the feed have been expressing collective shock over the course of the last day in response to the London riots that broke out over the weekend. Comic creator tweets are fun to follow during Comic-Con International week, because they tend to keep appearing all night long. From pictures of run-ins between Stan Lee and Taylor Lautner to hang-outs with "A Game of Thrones" author George R.R. Martin, the feed was loaded with fun this morning.
It's also a great week to watch for art posts. Take, for example, a really awesome Jon Snow portrait posted by Michael Cho. Check out his link, some on-stage panel shots and some words from Simon Fraser on the passing of artist Lucian Freud.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is a 2009 parody novel by Seth Grahame-Smith. It is a mashup combining Jane Austen's classic 1813 novel 'Pride and Prejudice' with elements of modern zombie fiction, actually crediting Austen as co-author. In case you're wondering what makes this a comic book movie, May 2010 saw the publication of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: The Graphic Novel with acclaimed comic writer Tony Lee adapting the text and art by Cliff Richards. Here is an excerpt of the report from Variety. Lionsgate has tapped Emma Stone as its Elizabeth Bennet for "Pride, Prejudice and Zombies." Craig Gillespie is directing. Seth Grahame-Smith, who penned the original tome, is writing the script with Marti Noxon. What do you guys think of this news? Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place and stay tuned for more info as and when we have it.
