Though his personal tragedies and demons have sometimes overshadowed his work, there’s no denying the impact Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski has had on cinema.
Born in 1933 in Paris and raised in Poland, Polanski’s childhood was marked by tragedy when he was separated from his parents during the Holocaust. As a child, he escaped the Krakow ghetto after his mother was killed in an Auschwitz gas chamber. When the war ended, he was reunited with his father and returned home.
He turned to filmmaking as a student, making his directorial debut with the international hit “Knife in the Water” (1962), which earned an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. His followup, the psychological thriller “Repulsion” (1965), was an even bigger hit, and he was soon drafted by Hollywood to direct the occult horror film “Rosemary’s Baby” (1968), which earned him a Best Adapted Screenplay bid.

As the news media put it so dismissively in headlines after the Manson Family murders, actress Sharon Tate was murdered along with “four others.” Those “others” were in fact Abigail Folger, Wojciech Frykowski, Steven Parent and Jay Sebring. The latter is the subject of the documentary Jay Sebring….Cutting to the Truth, directed by Anthony Dimaria. The filmmaker is Sebring’s nephew, adding a deeply personal and heartfelt patina to a film that seeks to expand the portrait of his uncle beyond being a tragic victim in one of the most sensationalized crimes of the 20th century.

The myth of Charles Manson and Helter Skelter struck a chord when he manipulated "the family" to murder innocent but well-known people to push his still rather confusing agenda to start a race war.
The family was Manson's groupies.
They considered Manson a rockstar and a messiah, and their love for him drove them to unforgivable places. They fell for the erstwhile charms of a petty conman and cemented a place in history.
Helter Skelter: An American Myth will air on Epix beginning Sunday, July 26, and director Lesley Chilcott went to great lengths to dig into Manson's history, hoping to show, with extensive research and first-person interviews, that Charles Manson has not been worth over 50 years of fascination.
Chilcott's documentary series feels like the definitive exploration into Manson and his followers.
She doesn't portray Manson in a favorable light, deserving of obsession but highlights how the times and Manson's extensive...

Updated, 12:01 Pm: Epix said today that Helter Skelter: An American Myth will premiere at 10 p.m. Sunday, July 26. Read details of the docuseries below.
Previously, June 4: Helter Skelter: An American Myth, a six-part docuseries about Charles Manson exec produced by Greg Berlanti, has been pushed back by Epix.
The series was previously planned to debut on June 14 and the MGM-owned network has not yet set a replacement date.
Deadline understands the network didn’t feel it was an appropriate time to release the series given the subject matter – Charles Manson planned to incite a race war called Helter Skelter.
The series comes 50 years after the murder of Sharon Tate, Jay Sebring, Abigail Folger, Wojtek Frykowski and Steven Parent and Manson’s subsequent trial. It will chronicle the Manson Family history, featuring never-before-accessed interviews from former family members and journalists first on the scene and in the courtroom, with archival footage and newly-unearthed images.

Thanks to the critical, box office and award-winning success of writer/director Quentin Tarantino's "Once Upon A Time In... Hollywood", actor Brad Pitt who plays movie stunt double, bodyguard 'Cliff Booth' in the film, is open to reprising his character for an extended episode, 'streaming mini-series', featuring new content and character backstories:
"...I look at a mini-series where you can spend much more time on characters and story and explore angles you don't always get to do in films", said Pitt.
"So much of these films end up on the cutting room floor because they just don't fit in that box.
"That's why I think it's interesting that Tarantino previously took 'Hateful Eight' and ostensibly repurposed it as a three-part series. It's almost the best of both worlds.
"You have the cinema experience that exists, but you can actually put more content into the series format."

From the stark contrast “Stuck In The Middle With You” provided for Mr. Blonde torturing a cop in “Reservior Dogs” to Mia Wallace and Vincent Vega’s iconic dance to Chuck Berry’s “You Never Can Tell” in “Pulp Fiction,” Quentin Tarantino is a proven master in choosing just the right song, and the extensive track list in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” is no exception.
Tarantino discussed the music of his latest film during a 90-minute event at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles this week alongside guests who included Mark Lindsay of Paul Revere & the Raiders, a band that contributed three pieces of sonic ’60s history to the movie.

Roman Polanski is opening up about the murder of his wife Sharon Tate in 1969 — and the backlash he felt since then.
In press notes for his latest film J’Accuse at the Venice Film Festival, Polanski, 86, said he felt his “image” was affected negatively after the murder of his then-wife Tate, according to The Wrap. The director will not be attending the festival, according to Deadline.
Polanski remains controversial due to a later crime: In 1977, he was arrested for drugging and raping 13-year-old Samantha Geimer. He pleaded guilty to statutory rape but fled to Europe before completing his sentence. His...

Actress Sharon Tate was only 26 years old when her life and career were tragically cut short in one of the most brutal murders in Hollywood history. On Aug. 8, 1969, the stunning Valley of the Dolls star - who was married to film director Roman Polanski and eight and a half months pregnant with their son - was spending time with friends at 10050 Cielo Drive, the secluded home she and Roman shared in La's Benedict Canyon. Roman was off in London filming The Day of the Dolphin, so he asked their close pals Wojciech Frykowski and Folger's Coffee heiress Abigail Folger to stay at the house with his pregnant wife until he flew back to La on Aug. 12. The trio had dinner at Sharon's favorite restaurant, El Coyote, along with celebrity hairstylist Jay Sebring. They returned to the house around 10:30 p.m.

Oxygen’s “Manson: The Women” features four of Charles Manson’s female followers, some of who feel regret for the murders of Sharon Tate and her friends 50 years ago, while others don’t quite feel the same empathy.
The special includes interviews with Catherine Louise “Gypsy” Share, Sandra “Blue” Good, Dianne “Snake” Lake (who was 14 when she joined the Family) and Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme (who is also known for attempting to assassinate President Gerald Ford in 1975). None of these women were directly involved with the Tate-labianca murders, but were all sent to prison for other reasons and for a variety of lengths — Share, for example, served five years for armed robbery.
The four women talk about their impression of Charlie, whom they all deemed charming and capable of making someone feel special, what their life was like before and during their time as a Manson Family member, and what happened shortly after Manson,...

Quentin Tarantino‘s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood hit movie theaters last week to critical acclaim. The film — starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie as the late Sharon Tate — follows Charles Manson and his followers leading up to their two-day killing spree in 1969.
Tarantino, an enthusiastic student of Hollywood history, featured some of Los Angeles’ most iconic hotspots from the 60s in his film — including infamous locales such as the home Tate shared with her husband, director Roman Polanski, where she, Jay Sebring, Abigail Folger, Voytek Frykowski and Steve Parent were murdered by members of the Manson Family.

Steve McQueen, one of Hollywood’s iconic leading men, narrowly avoided murder at the hands of Manson Family members the night of Sharon Tate’s death.
The actor, who died in 1980 at the age of 50, was meant to attend a dinner with his friend, hairdresser Jay Sebring, at the home of Tate in 1969.
McQueen’s former wife, Neile Adams, who was married to him at the time, told the National Post in 2017 the actor was only saved when he “ran into a chickie and decided to go off with her instead.”
“Going off with that girl saved his life,” Adams said.

(Spoiler alert: Don’t read on if you don’t want to hear lots of details about Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.”)
Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood” takes place around the time of the infamous Manson family murders of Sharon Tate and her friends under the dark influence of Charles Manson. The movie deviates — a lot — from what really happened on the night of Aug. 8, 1969, including in the moment when a young Manson follower bails out on her friends before the home invasion.
Did it really happen? Not exactly. But there’s a grain of truth. And seriously, stop reading now if you want to avoid spoilers.
In the film, “Tex” Watson and three female members of the Manson Family drive up to the residence of Tate and Roman Polanski at 10050 Cielo Drive in Benedict Canyon, Los Angeles.

Quentin Tarantino doesn't need an introduction - he's the auteur who brought us gratuitously gory films such as Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, and Django Unchained. Now, he's onto his ninth film with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, a $100 million project that convinced even Leonardo DiCaprio to take a hefty pay cut. Since Tarantino only plans to make 10 movies, this is certainly going to be a treat, boasting a cast of the fine actors to prove it. In the movie, the writer-director crafts a narrative that touches upon one of the most disturbing murders in Hollywood history - that of celebrity Sharon Tate under the orders of Charles Manson.
Fictional Elements
The Manson murders won't be the main focus of the plot, which is still being kept under wraps. But we'll certainly see everyone involved in the case, including Tate (Margot Robbie), Manson (Damon Herriman), Manson's followers, and a handful of '60s celebrities.

On Monday, California Governor Gavin Newsom denied a request for parole from Leslie Van Houten, the former Manson family member who was convicted for her role in the grisly slaying of the Los Angeles couple Leno and Rosemary Labianca. For the moment, we can put aside how much this project is in bad taste. The Haunting of Sharon Tate takes a tragic real life murder and makes a crappy horror flick out of it. Moreover, it gets supernatural agency to an actual criminal act. All on its own, that would be terrific. Worse, the film itself is almost unwatchable, that’s how bad it is. When a movie does as many things wrong as this one does, you wonder how it got made in the first place? Tasteless in concept, misguided in execution, and an utter bore, this is among the worst that 2019 has produced so far. Seriously, you have no idea how awful this is, and I sincerely hope you never find out. In case the title didn’t spell it out for you, this is a tale of how Sharon Tate (Hilary Duff) met her demise, and of course,...

On the night of August 8, 1969, Sharon Tate, Jay Sebring, Wojciech Frykowski, Abigail Folger and Steven Parent were brutally murdered by the Manson Family. It was one of the most shocking and horrifying crimes of the 20th century, a tragedy that still reverberates 50 years later.
And now… there’s a really bad slasher movie about it.
“The Haunting of Sharon Tate” is a ghoulish film that dramatizes these heinous slayings like a particularly tacky pulp thriller, using snippets of documentary footage to remind us that this story is true and deserves more respectful and nuanced treatment than writer-director Daniel Farrands (“The Amityville Murders”) seems able to provide. The lives of Tate, Sebring, Frykowski, Folger and Parent are reduced to stock horror archetypes, trapped in an underwritten and ultimately insulting thriller, with a conclusion that strives for profundity and fails in spectacular fashion.

I have to admit that I was originally skeptical about The Haunting of Sharon Tate. There are just so many pitfalls to making a movie about an event so ingrained in public consciousness as the murder of Sharon Tate and four other people at the hands of Charles Manson’s followers, not the least of which is the potential to turn a real tragedy into exploitative tripe played for jump scares. I soon realized, though, that while The Haunting of Sharon Tate may not be a perfect film, writer/director Daniel Farrands acknowledges that the events of August 9th, 1969 were horrendous, and he reminds the audience of this by creating an atmosphere of dread and melancholy that permeates the film.
After a somber prologue that shows the aftermath of the murders, the film jumps back to show Tate (played by Hilary Duff) and company in the days leading up to the grizzly killings.

Daniel Farrands’ unfathomably bad “The Haunting of Sharon Tate” poses a number of provocative questions. The first is asked by Edgar Allen Poe in a stanza of on-screen text: “Is all that we see or seem but a dream within a dream?” Hmm. The next comes from the film’s casting director, whose name has been omitted from this review in order to protect the under-the-line talent: “What would it look like if the most culturally seismic killings of 1969 were amateurishly dramatized by Lizzie McGuire, Citizen Kane’s great-granddaughter, Lindsay Lohan’s love interest from ‘Mean Girls,’ and a smattering of attractive young actors who look more like ‘Vanderpump Rules’ characters than they do the members of a racist death cult?” And then — spoiler alert! — there’s the question that ties the whole room together: “What if the Manson Family murders were given the ‘Inglourious Basterds’ treatment and re-imagined as...

Hilary Duff's transformation into Sharon Tate in her new film is beyond eerie. In the thriller The Haunting of Sharon Tate, the actress not only adopts the slain actress' look—'60s full body blonde hairstyle, heavy mascara—but her sweet, soft-spoken tone. In a clip from the movie, released on Wednesday, Duff's Tate is heavily pregnant with her and director Roman Polanski's first child together and spends time at home with friends Abigail Folger and Wojciech Frykowski, played by Lydia Hearst and Pawel Szajda, where she is surprised with a new nursery. Her husband is away, working on his new film in London. In 1969, the real Tate was murdered at age 26 by followers...

One of the most delightful parts of the trailer for Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was Bruce Lee, who is played by Mike Moh. He is perfect in the role of Lee and we even got to see him show off his fighting skills as he sparred with stuntman Cliff Booth, played by Brad Pitt.
I’ve actually been wondering why Lee is in the film. I know it’s set in 1969 Hollywood when he was around, but what is the part that he plays in the story? Well, there’s an answer and it’s an interesting one that is based on his relationship with Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate.
Lee actually played a small and bizarre role in the story of the Manson family murders. In fact, according to Matthew Polly, author of the book Bruce Lee: A Life, director Polanski actually thought at...

For almost as long as we’ve been hearing about “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Quentin Tarantino and Sony Pictures, which will release the film, have tried to dispel the notion that it will be all about the Manson murders.
They couldn’t have made their point better than they did with the teaser trailer released Wednesday. Tarantino signals with the teaser that that the film won’t just be a portrait of one horrible night in 1969, but rather of an entire era, sweeping across at least three years prior to the Manson murders.
Because he’s Quentin Tarantino, he doled out those clues via obscure Bruce Lee knowledge, old TV and movie marquees. Let’s look at all the signs, literal and figurative, that “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” won’t surrender its story to Manson.

Perhaps the greatest delight of the new teaser for Quentin Tarantino’s ninth film, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” is the unexpected prominence of Bruce Lee. Lee, played by Mike Moh, demonstrates his kung-fu mastery with stuntman Cliff Booth, played by Brad Pitt.
He’s onscreen for about 15 seconds of the one-minute-forty-five-second trailer, but they’re electrifying. Why is Lee there? Partly, of course, because Tarantino adores him. But this isn’t a case of a director shoehorning someone into a story. Lee played a small but significant — and very bizarre — part in the story of the Manson killings.
There’s no telling how much of that story will be in Tarantino’s film. And if you don’t want to know the details, we’d recommend you stop reading now.

I'm not sure what I was expecting to see when I pressed play on the trailer for The Haunting of Sharon Tate, but I certainly wasn't anticipating so many floral robes.
The film, which has been billed as a horror-thriller and stars Hilary Duff as the Hollywood actress, takes place in the weeks leading up to Tate's tragic murder in 1969 at the hands of Charles Manson's followers. Tate's husband, Roman Polanski, was away in Europe at the time, so her friends came to stay with her since she was eight-and-a-half months pregnant. Tate, Wojciech Frykowski, Folger's Coffee heiress Abigail Folger, and hairstylist Jay Sebring were all brutally killed, and the grisly event has become the subject of sick fascination for people ever since.

Hilary Duff is revisiting the Manson Murders — with a bit of twist.
The 31-year-old actress stars as Sharon Tate in The Haunting of Sharon Tate, a reimagining of the tragic murders that took her life and the lives of four other people in 1969.
“I guess you could say I live in a fairytale, looking at everything through rose-colored glasses,” Duff as Tate says in a black and white interview.
In a reimagining of the night the tragic event took place, Tate appears concerned when two houseguests admit a stranger named Charlie has been knocking on the door and leaving strange tapes behind.

It's clear by now that Quentin Tarantino isn't afraid of diving into some pretty gruesome stories, and his next project only further confirms it. In July 2017, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Tarantino is in the early stages of putting together a film described as "a unique take on the Manson Family murders." Here are the scraps of information we've been able to pull together so far:
The Production Team
The drama, which would be his follow-up to 2015's The Hateful Eight, will be called Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and a source confirmed that Tarantino both penned the script for Sony and will direct. The movie is being produced by Tarantino, Harry Potter's David Heyman, and Shannon McIntosh, with Georgia Kacandes serving as executive producer.

This past November, mass-murderer and cult leader Charles Manson died of natural causes at age 83. Immediately following his long-awaited death, several people started fighting over the infamous killer’s body — and now we finally know who gets it. On March 12, TMZ reported that Jason Freeman, a man who claims to be Mason's grandson, has been given custody of the body. However, that doesn't mean that the battle is over. Michael Brunner, son of Manson follower Mary Brunner, filed legal docs looking into whether or not Jason is actually related to Mason. He apparently refused a DNA test, which makes him look suspect. It's no surprise that there would be some fighting over the estate, because it comes with the rights to the Manson name. Think books, movies, and TV shows... yeah, there could be a lot of money involved. Several people had filed for custody of the body, which seemed just plain weird to us.
