Exclusive: The team behind Binge’s newly-crowned biggest original, Strife, are headed back to the writers’ room.
The drama series — from Big Little Lies, Nine Perfect Strangers and Anatomy of a Scandal producer Made Up Stories in partnership with Fifth Season — has quickly usurped Colin From Accounts as Binge’s best-performing original for its first day and first week, according to the Foxtel-owned Australian streamer. The writing team, led by Sarah Scheller (The Letdown), are now reteaming to pen scripts for a second season.
The show stars Asher Keddie (Nine Perfect Strangers, Offspring) as imperfect, modern woman and magazine publisher Evelyn Jones, following her journey from lounge room blogger to becoming a force in women’s media. It launched on Binge on December 6.

The second season of Peacock’s Wolf Life Me romantic dramedy has a pregnant Mary, played by Wedding Crasher’s Isla Fisher, giving birth to a possible werewolf pup baby as her twisted romance with an eternally vulnerable Gary (Josh Gad) continues.
The trailer for the new season dropped Wednesday.
And that’s not the only question, among Mary’s many secrets, looming over the season two. Her former professor Anton, played by Edgar Ramirez, arrives on the scene and it’s not long before he makes a move on Mary.
Wolf Like Me in its first season starred Gad as a widowed father living in Australia and struggling with grief as he raises his daughter (Ariel Donoghue). Mary (Fisher) has a secret she can’t share with anyone, even as the universe seemed to bring her and Gary together.

"It felt like the universe was bringing us together..." NBC's Peacock has unveiled an official trailer for a new dramatic mini-series streaming on Peacock later in January. This one is titled Wolf Like Me, and it's about two people connecting despite their own major struggles and emotional baggage. It was produced by Stan in Australia, and is directed by the indie filmmaker / actor Abe Forsythe - who last made the zombie comedy film Little Monsters. Gary is an emotional wreck and struggles to provide for his daughter since the death of his wife. Mary also has a secret she can't bring herself to share with anyone. The universe brought these two together for a reason. Co-starring Isla Fisher & Josh Gad, with Emma Lung. Gad wrote on Twitter: "You've truly never seen anything like it." Very interesting. I wonder what the big twist is in here? Hard to tell from these trailers,...

An underrated gem about death on a boat, Christopher Smith's Triangle is also a classic fable about sin and punishment, Ryan writes...
How can Triangle be summed up in just a sentence or two? It’s a thriller about a boat trip that goes horribly awry. Then it becomes a lean slasher flick set on an abandoned cruise liner. And then it flips over into - well, that’d just be spoiling things. And maybe this gets to the heart of why Triangle earned praise from critics but didn’t exactly soar at the box-office on its release in 2009: the movie doesn’t have any major stars, unless you count former Home & Away actress Melissa George or a pre-Hunger Games Liam Hemsworth, and it’s impossible to describe the plot in detail without ruining its many twists and turns.

While you may not know Charles de Lauzirika’s name offhand, you’ve likely collected a fair amount of his work already. The director of some of the biggest behind the scenes features on DVDs and Blu Rays including the Alien Quadrilogy box set, Blade Runner and The Amazing Spider-man among many others, has just seen his first feature film, Crave, released on VOD, on iTunes and theatrically this month. Crave is intriguing, complicated and immensely entertaining. It’s a film that is on one hand absolutely astounding for the combination of the emotional story arc and the rich world created within that and on the other hand a fascinating examination of a disintegrating mind.
Crave is the story of Aiden (Joshua Lawson), a crime scene photographer in Detroit who is unable reconcile the injustices he sees around him with the disturbing visions in his head. The film is a...

Crave is so close to being the next fantastic piece of pulp cinema to depict vigilante justice, but at the same time, Charles de Lauzirika’s first directorial feature simply treads water for what seems like forever, only climaxing for a short period before going out with a timid whimper. There was no reason for this flick to march past the hour and a half mark, yet I found myself checking my watch an hour into the “mayhem,” only to find close to another hour still remained – causing an exasperated sigh. Like I said, Lauzirika is so close to creating a flashy bit of independent bliss, but our main character’s mental struggle turns out to be nothing but a misleading, long-winded chore.

Every year at Toronto After Dark, there are usually a couple of films that surprise me. These are usually movies that have flown underneath my radar and end up being so entertaining that I can’t believe I hadn’t heard more buzz about them beforehand. This year, one of those films was definitely Charles de Lauzirika’s debut feature, Crave.
Crave tells the story of a middle-age freelance photographer named Aiden (Josh Lawson) who finds himself growing weary of the society around him. Being that much of his work involves photographing crime scenes for a detective (played by Ron Perlman), he has developed a hatred for those who would victimize others. Throughout his day, he fantasizes about standing up to the rude and awful people that he encounters; exacting what he feels would be justice upon them. As his mental condition deteriorates further and further, he begins to have...

There are certain films that change our perception of the world around us and I hasten to say that Charles de Lauzirika’s Crave is one of those world. Just as Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver altered the public conciouness to the fact that the Vietnam War was still very real to many people and that there was the possibility to be a monster in all of us, Crave alerts us to our own desires and need for change that we are unable to act upon. That it seems all the more impossible to “be the change you want to see” when there are signs all over telling you to do so. Crave may be the best feature film debut since Rian _____ Brick.
It all begins with Aiden (Josh Lawson), a freelance photographer who specializes in crime scenes. Tired of being around murder and death without being able to affect any change.

Although this review is going to be about Charles de Lauzirika’s Crave, it seems appropriate to talk about it in relation to Taxi Driver, because despite its best efforts to differentiate itself, Crave just can’t seem to emerge from its obvious shadow of influence. Throughout the film, the anti-hero pontificates to his imaginary enemy while waving his gun at them, has relationship-ending theatre-going experiences with his date, is involved in convenience store stickups, and has a deep-seated hatred for pedophiles and pimps; but he is not supposed to be Travis Bickle. Right.
The anti-hero is Aiden (Josh Lawson), a cynical Detroit crime scene photographer who’s troubled with the urban and moral decay of his city. An introvert by birthright, Aiden copes with his anxieties by escaping to the dark recluse of his inner fantasies,...

Self-perception is a tenuous thing. Everybody wants to think of themself as a good person, even when they do bad things. And especially if they do these bad things for good reasons. This is the slippery conceit explored in Crave, the darkly comic first feature from director Charles de Lauzirika.
Crave follows Aiden (Josh Lawson), a freelance photographer who documents violent crime scenes on the mean streets of Detroit with the help of his buddy Pete (Ron Perlman), a world-weary homicide detective. Aiden's a nice guy, despite the voices in his head that constantly hector him, telling him he's a coward or that people that do bad things deserve to die. But, hey, everyone talks to themself, right?

Genre movies express and nourish the unconscious thoughts, fears, and desires of their audience. Fans of thrillers or action films first find their morbid curiosities sated and then their dreams of heroism and personal strength. Crave might be the most literally psychological thriller ever made, but calling it such feels disingenuous. It’s an in depth character study of an irrelevant and unnoticed man, an intelligent examination of a doomed tryst, and a thriller–but the film’s propulsion and genre dressings come entirely from its protagonist’s mess of neuroses and self-deceptions.
Primarily, though, Crave is a film about two characters who deeply desire things that they cannot or should not desire. Aiden (Josh Lawson) is a mid-30s crime-scene photographer who is constantly stuck in his head. In frequent voiceover, Aiden invents scenarios, chastises himself,...

Not all cinematic psychos are so obvious with their psychoses. Sure, it doesn't take a team of psychiatrists to figure out that Jason Voorhees is a lunatic (and probably a zombie), and even the classier psychos like Hannibal Lecter are still plainly and obviously unhinged. (It's in his eyes.) But there's a distinct sub-genre of horror / thrillers that look like simple, low-key character studies on the surface, but are actually "about" the sad, disturbing, and creepily matter-of-fact idea that, well, sometimes men go insane. Taking a bit of its inspiration from Taxi Driver, but also slightly reminiscent of arthouse chillers like Keane and Clean, Shaven, Charles de Lauzirika's debut feature Crave is a slow-build character study that seems a bit aimless at times, but really starts to gel into something smart, subtle, and satisfying when all is said and done.

First of all. That scene in the trailer where Josh puts the shrimp in his mouth then puts it back on the buffet is crazy.
Charlie: That was entirely Josh. It wasn't in the script and he did it on the day. But it's such a great snapshot of the mind of the character.
This movie seems like it has a bit of Dirty Harry and Death Wish in its heart, but against the entire world. What inspired it?
Charlie: I wanted to do something lean, mean quick and dirty. And my neighbor at the time, Rob Lawton, had something that he pitched to me as Travis Bickle meets Walter Mitty.

Year: 2009Director: John V. Soto, Jeffrey GerritsenCast: Christopher Egan, Brooke Harmon, Emma Lung, Christian Clark
Julian, an American student studying in Australia, takes up house sitting to earn some extra cash. He is elated when he is called to house sit for a very wealthy family with a magnificent home. However, soon after settling in, a mysterious girl shows up; she seduces him and he complies, though he is in a committed relationship. However, when he tries to end his relationship with her, she demonstrates her true intentions.
There is no denying that Crush is a great looking film. It's full of rich colors, expressive cinematography, gorgeous set pieces, and an equally gorgeous young cast. Visually and technically, the film could not be any better. It even completes itself with an impressive, if not at times distracting, soundtrack. Moreover, the acting from the cast is pretty solid and Christopher Egan...

A one night stand turns deadly for a college student when he sleeps with the niece of the person he is house sitting for.
What might seem like a standard film premise is given a nice horror twist. The first half is a little bit slow at times. The principal setting of Crush could have been used more effectively to create an eerie atmosphere. However, once the plot develops, Crush comes alive with energy and momentum. Crush becomes this rollercoaster ride of suspense. Emma Lung and Christopher Egan generate some fireworks with dynamic confrontational scenes. There is effective stalking scenes between protagonist and antagonist. A memorable dream sequence really hits the spot in creating tension and unease. And the finale is refreshingly unexpected.

Directors: John Soto and Jeffrey Gerritsen.
Writer: John Soto.
John Soto's (Needle, Prey) Crush is a thriller film from Australia that puts Christopher Egan in the central role of an isolated housesitter. The film pays homage to Fatal Attraction with the tagline "Attraction Can Be Fatal," and the film offers a unique twist on the love affair gone very wrong angle. As well, the soundtrack enhances a visually appealing film from cinematographer Richard Malins (Stump, Crush).
The film's storyline centrally involves Julian (Egan), a prize winning martial arts champion. Egan is a multi-faceted character with a love for the drink and an occasional beautiful woman. These very human weaknesses land Julian in hot waters with his girlfriend, employer, teacher, and coach when Julian turns to the sexy Anna (Emma Lung) for intimacy and excitement.

Triangle Written and Directed by: Christopher Smith Starring: Melissa George, Liam Hemsworth, Michael Dorman, Henry Nixon, Rachael Carpani, Emma Lung, Joshua McIvor Sitting down to watch a horror/thriller called Triangle that takes place on a boat out in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, you'd be forgiven for expecting a fairly straightforward and unoriginal story. But take all those preconceptions and throw them out the window, because this isn't just another cheesy take on the legend of the Bermuda Triangle (at least not explicitly). Written and directed by Christopher Smith, the British director behind the gory horror-comedy Severance, this is a strange and wonderful mindbender of a film -- one that navigates uncharted waters and pulls you down into a dizzying whirlpool of weirdness. If you're a fan of far out Twilight Zone-esque concepts, then you'll agree that this is definitely a good thing. Melissa George plays Jess,...

Christopher Smith'S inventive and unsettling thriller Triangle is almost certain to become one of those talked-about, must-see cult favourites.
The British film, which was well-received by critics but slipped largely under the radar at the box office, comes out on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK on March 1.
Because it's better if you don't know too much about it first (although it's still interesting to re-watch subsequently), I'm going to give only a scant account of the storyline.
Smith's previous directing credits include his entry in the slasher/gorno genre, Creep, (which was too visceral for my tastes); and a comedy horror flick in the form of Severance.
Thankfully, the filmmaker resorts more to atmosphere and suspense in Triangle, though there are shocks and violence along the way.
Filmed in Australia but set in Florida, the basic premise is that struggling single mum Jess (Melissa George) cannot shake the...

At the end of a long pier just off the beach at Surfer’s Paradise in the Australian state of Queensland, the three-story front end of an ocean liner sits on a huge pile of rocks. It’s not wrecked—although many of the people who walk its decks will be. Instead, it’s the ingenious solution to the problem of making a film that’s mainly set on such a vessel—one that you can’t really hire, or buy off eBay. It also helps when you need your movie to showcase real waves, and not the computer-generated variety.
