I don’t believe in Karma. But there may be something to it. I’m sitting in my basement getting a whiff of my own shit while trying to write about a movie called Septic Man. Nothing like a good rain to get the sewer backed up. Ugh. Here’s hoping I can get power through this while holding my nose.
Water contamination in a small Canadian town forces an evacuation. That is when plumber Jack (Jason David Brown) is approached by a strange man (Julian Richings) who asks him to look into the cause. Some films are just crap, but Septic Man is literally about it. In the first few minutes you may get to see a lot of human waste, but if truth be told if the movie has a bigger problem than that… it may be slightly constipated.
Jack (Jason David Brown) is a sewage worker who is known to be good at his job. When government official Phil Prosser (Julian Richings) gives him an offer he can’t (or isn’t) allowed to refuse he finds himself investigating problems in the city water system which are leading to a plague of diseases, even death. When he finds the source though he finds himself trapped in the water treatment facility at the mercy of two strange brothers intent on killing him.

Audrey (or should I say Mara) and the gang are back in the “Haven” season 5 premiere and things have gone from bad to significantly worse. The episode opens up with Gloria (Jayne Eastwood) and Vickie (Molly Dunsworth) taking care of Gloria’s grandson — the same baby whose deadly cries forced Audrey (Emily Rose) to give Duke (Eric Balfour) back his trouble last season. Unable to stop the baby from crying, Vickie, who you might remember as the girl back in season one whose drawings affect reality, uses her trouble to calm the baby down. It’s a sweet scene that [...]

Sneak Peek footage from director Jeese Thomas Cook's horror feature "Septic Man", starring Jason David Brown as a sewage worker who ends up transforming into a hideous mutant by way of toxic sewage:
"...'Jack' (Brown) is an average sewage worker who has been asked to investigate a water contamination in his hometown that has forced everyone else, including his pregnant wife 'Shelley' (Molly Dunsworth) to evacuate.
"Jack decides to investigate the local sewage plant but ends up getting trapped in a septic tank by 'Lord Auch' (Tim Burd) and his brother 'Giant' (Robert Maillet). They refuse to let Jack out despite his pleas and the toxic sewage eventually begins to transform Jack into the hideous mutant 'Septic Man'..."

Title: Septic Man Director: Jesse Thomas Cook Starring: Jason David Brown, Molly Dunsworth, Julian Richings, Tim Burd, Robert Maillet, Stephen McHattie A film with a title as schlocky as “Septic Man” has… well, a certain potential, let’s be honest. And yet this willfully distasteful Canadian horror flick — which almost emits an unwholesome effluvia of human waste and other bodily fluids directly through the screen — is borderline incomprehensible and thoroughly unengaging throughout, lacking even in enough distinctive personality to make it worthwhile for self-flagellating fans of low-budget shock and gore. The film unfolds in a small town in Ontario, Canada, where an opening credits narration informs viewers that there’s something in the [ Read More ]

Septic Man loves vomit above all other bodily fluids (though it loves those, too) -- fitting, considering its generally putrid quality. With a premise that recalls The Toxic Avenger but without an ounce of its smart superhero action or satire, Jesse Thomas Cook’s film follows septic expert Jack (Jason David Brown) as he’s paid by a mystery man (Julian Richings) to investigate his town’s horrid contaminated-water crisis. As citizens evacuate, including Jack’s pregnant wife (Molly Dunsworth), Jack goes to the local irrigation facility, falls in a hole, and finds that the problem is being caused by dead bodies that were dumped into the water system by chainsaw-wielding psycho Lord Auch (Tim Burd), who speaks in animalistic chir...

The opening scene to 'Septic Man' has been released on to the internet and it certainly does push the limits of gross-out comedy! The movie from director Jesse Thomas Cook and penned by Tony Burgess stars Jason David Brown, Molly Dunsworth, Robert Maillet, Tim Burd, Julian Richings ('Supernatural') and Stephen McHattie ('Watchmen'). Imagine the messiest bathroom you’ve ever seen. Now imagine it 100 times more disgusting and even then it probably doesn’t equal the horrendous confines of the restroom in the opening scene of Septic Man, due out later this month from Starz Digital Media. We have a clip featuring a bile-inducing bathroom that could be a plumber’s private hell.
“Septic Man follows Jack, a sewage worker who is determined to uncover the cause of the town’s water contamination crisis. During his investigation, he becomes trapped underground in a septic tank and undergoes a hideous transformation. He must team up with a docile Giant and confront a murdering madman in order to escape. Hailed as a “stunning” (Little Red Umbrella), “funny” (TwitchFilm), and “visceral story that will leave you shaken and desperate for a shower” (Rue Morgue Magazine), Septic Man is an odyssey into the darkest depths of gross-out horror.

Silent Retreat
Written by Corey Brown
Directed by Tricia Lee
Canada, 2013
Opting for a rehabilitation program over jail time, Janey (Chelsea Jenish) discovers the hidden ramifications of her choice when she arrives at an isolated camp, where she is told by the strict “doctor” (Robert Nolan) that she, and the other young women at the retreat, can’t talk to or interact with each other. Things are compounded when Janey discovers that people aren’t the only things that inhabit the area.
The idea of using extreme silent treatment to control and condition the young women to the doctor’s misogynistic standards is an interesting approach to attacking traditional gender roles and patriarchy (the place is run by the doctor and his two sons, a nice homage to A Clockwork Orange), but the way in which Silent Retreat goes about this is often heavy-handed and conspicuous. Well, folks, 2011 is officially in the can, and surprisingly it wasn't such a horrendous year. It was definitely better than 2010, which was a huge step up from the putrid 2009. We laughed, we applauded, we were left dumbstruck, and of course we were infuriated. Read on for our cheers and jeers!
Now, with a fresh movie-watching start before us, we're taking our usual yearly look back at the good, the bad, the Wtf, and everything in between.

Cell 211 (18)
(Daniel Monzón, 2009, Spa/Fr) Luis Tosar, Alberto Ammann, Antonio Resines. 113 mins
Sometimes all you need is a great set-up: a prison guard, first day on the job, gets trapped in a cell just as a riot breaks out, and must therefore pose as an inmate to survive. It's better not to know where this tough Spanish thriller goes from there, but rest assured you're in very good hands. There's tightrope tension and breakneck pace, but wider questions of honour and justice unfold, too – everything you could ask for, in fact.
Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (12A)
(David Yates, 2011, UK/Us) Daniel Radcliffe, Ralph Fiennes, Emma Watson. 130 mins
Having sat through the deathly dullness of Part 1, here's our reward: a rousing finale that strikes all the right notes, ties up 10 years' worth of loose ends, plunges you into 3D battle, and perhaps even wrings the odd tear – all without inducing effects fatigue.

Ultra-violent exploitation flicks are not for everyone. Even one that is actually a great piece of cinema won’t win over the people who are blind to the intended hilarity in absurd levels of gore. On the other hand, it’s hard for such a film to be genuinely crap, as the self-conscious tackiness is part of the appeal. Keep the violence high, the punchlines cheesy, and the aesthetic retro, and you’ve already got yourself a potential cult classic.
Hobo with a Shotgun directed by first-time feature filmmaker Jason Eisener, fulfills these criteria admirably. Finally released in the U.K. today, the film is based on one of the ‘fake’ film trailers that was shown (Canadian only) as part of Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s Grindhouse double-bill back in 2007. It tells the self-explanatory story of an anonymous hobo (Rutger Hauer) who arrives in a...

Hobo with a Shotgun: The 2007 double feature Grindhouse is the gift for midnight movie fans that keeps on giving. First it inspired Robert Rodriguez to expand one of the fake trailers into the feature-length Machete, and now director Jason Eisener has expanded another fake trailer used to promote Grindhouse into a joyous celebration of violence and sleaze. With a fantastic title like "Hobo With a Shotgun," you can pretty much surmise what this retro exploitation movie has to offer -- comic book violence, a rad early '80s score, over-the-top everything, and newspaper headlines that read: "Hobo stops begging, demands change."
This fun film firmly rests on Rutger Hauer's seasoned shoulders -- this badass actor ruled early-'80s cinema like "Blade Runner" and "Ladyhawke" -- and he takes a madman's glee in fleshing out his hobo with a heart of gold.
Instead of a can of beans, Hauer's hobo clutches a shotgun after reaching his breaking point in a festering town where a crime boss and his two sadistic sons sink to increasingly lower depths of depravity. Expect to see gratuitous blood and gore, topless women beating a human piñata, decapitation, a pedophile Santa Claus, a tentacled beast, and a girl stabbing a man with her exposed wrist bone.

As subtle as its title, Hobo with a Shotgun is an in-your-face orgy of Seventies/Eighties grindhouse exploitation elements that goes way over the line in terms of blood and gore and good taste. That said, it’s bound to find a large audience that can’t get enough of the sicko stuff.

Hobo With A Shotgun has all the hallmarks of an unapologetically sleazy vigilante thriller that is akin to the likes of Street Trash and Death Wish. But instead of Vic Noto or Charles Bronson at the helm we have cult favourite nutcase Rutger Hauer. The esteemed Dutchman has had an interesting, if somewhat unfulfilled, career giving nevertheless memorably menacing performances in the likes of Blade Runner and The Hitcher, not forgetting early credits which harkens back to pre-Hollywood Paul Verhoeven (Turkish Delight, Soldier of Orange) and forward to appearances in big budget blockbuster fare such as Batman Begins and Sin City.
In the lead role of a homeless grunt with a grudge to bare, Hauer is splendidly re-affirmed – riding into Hope Town on a freight train, his weather-beaten features dominating the Technicolor widescreen in close up as he chomps on a harmonica and manically screws his face up,...

The “vampires” in Priest are inhuman alien-like creatures. Their bite appears to turn humans into lobotomized slaves known as “familiars.” So how come Karl Urban’s villainous Black Hat turns into an classically humanlike vampire?
As established in a flashback, Black Hat didn’t just get bitten by a vampire; he had to drink the blood of a vampire Queen, a biological irregularity that apparently turned him into a “vampire-human hybrid.” (It might also help that Black Hat wasn’t just a normal guy; he was a Priest, a member of an elite group of soldiers who occasionally appear super-human.

Chicago – What do you expect from a movie called “Hobo With a Shotgun” (other than perhaps the most truthful title since “Snakes on a Plane”)? If you’re spending hard-earned money on a movie about a vengeful homeless person played by Rutger Hauer, you probably know what you’re in for. On those grindhouse terms, “Hobo With a Shotgun” totally works. It’s so far over-the-top that it makes “Machete” look believable, but that’s why it’s effective. Unlike so many movies you will see this season, “Hobo With a Shotgun” delivers.
Rutger Hauer plays the title character, a boxcar jumper who finds himself in the ironically-named “Hope Town,” a place that would make Gomorrah look like a lovely place for a summer vacation. Shortly after his arrival, our hero witnesses a horrific event in the center of town. The ringmaster of sin and chaos, The Drake (Brian Downey...

Director: Jason Eisener Writers: Jason Eisener, John Davies, Rob Cotterill Starring: Rutger Hauer, Gregory Smith, Molly Dunsworth, Brian Downey, Nick Bateman I really did not want to pile onto the "I hate Hobo with a Shotgun" bandwagon, especially since Dave Campbell (Smells Like Screen Spirit's Editor-in-Chief) and I seem to be the only ones riding on it. (In case you missed it, here is Dave's review of Hobo with a Shotgun.) I typically do not read reviews of films before I write my own, but in this instance I read everything that has been published (to date) on IMDb.com and Rotten Tomatoes; and, I have to admit, I really do not understand why so many people are raving about it. And that, my friends, is the reason I want to explain why I hopped on this god-forsaken bandwagon in the first place... Hopping off a train -- because that...

Rutger Hauer in Hobo with a Shotgun
Photo: Magnet Releasing Hobo with a Shotgun is terrible, and for me to dedicate more than those six words to this review is to give it more than it deserves. But the unwritten rules say I have to be fair and make a case for my opinion, which in this case is fine since I have a few questions I think need to be asked.
This is the second film to come out of the fake trailer sector in recent years. Similar to Robert Rodriguez's Machete, Hobo with a Shotgun started as a result of the Quentin Tarantino and Rodriguez 2007 teaming, Grindhouse. Co-writer and director Jason Eisener's Hobo with a Shotgun fake trailer was the winner of a contest that saw his trailer played in front of screenings of Grindhouse in Canada. It began as an award winning “fake” Grindhouse trailer now, Hobo With A Shotgun, director Jason Eisener’s full-on, no-holds-barred, kick-ass movie tribute to the grind house movies of the 1970s and 80s, is heading to the UK! Rutger Hauer fills the title role inspired by countless exploitation classics, and its more than great to see him back! The splattery goodness kicks of in UK cinemas July 22nd. Synopsis: When an ageing Hobo (Hauer) jumps from a freight car in a new city hoping for a fresh start in life, he soon realizes he has well and truly reached the end of the line. He finds himself trapped in an urban hell, an anarchic world overrun by murderers, rapists, paedophiles, petty crooks, prostitutes and corrupt cops. Reigning supreme over them all is the city’s crime boss, Drake (Brian Downey), and his two insanely sadistic sons, Slick (Gregory Smith) and...

Rutger Hauer — in all of his wrinkled, haggard, weathered Rutger Hauer glory — stars as the titular hobo, who alights from a train in Hope Town (regraffitied “Scum Town”), a seedy everycity that has been overrun by crime thanks to corrupt warlord The Drake (Brian Downey, acting and looking like a crazed Dick Miller) and his two punk sons, Slick (Gregory Smith) and Ian (Nick Bateman). The grindhouse genre received an addition at this year’s Sundance film festival with Jason Eisener’s Hobo With A Shotgun. I recently had a chance to view the film, and I have to say I want that hour and a half of my life back. Seriously, I don’t know what Eisener was thinking, but this film is terrible, don’t waste your time. Yes, grindhouse films are supposed to be a bit campy, and have kind of a b-movie feel, and be full of gore and nudity and all, but they’re also supposed to have some kind of social or artistic value. Hobo With A Shotgun took being a grindhouse film way too seriously and actually Is a b movie. So, if you’re looking to be bombarded by images of senseless gore and bull****, this film is for you, but it honestly has little to no real social value.

Hobo with a Shotgun is a feature-length adaptation of the highly successful fake trailer made for Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’ Grindhouse, and stars Rutger Hauer, Pasha Ebrahimi, Robb Wells and Molly Dunsworth.
The film centres on a homeless vigilante, Hobo (Hauer), who finds himself trapped in urban chaos. He is surrounded by armed robbers, corrupt cops and even a paedophile Santa. Hobo decides to bring about justice the best way he knows how – with his trusty pump-action shotgun.
Screenwriter John Davies litters the film with throwbacks to 1970′s horror, while conserving a gleeful level of originality and satirical humour into the oft-told one-against-the-world tale. It does wonders to keep viewers on the edge of their seats, and thoroughly entertained throughout. While the premise is a tad sketchy, the scenarios that derive from it – murderous dodgems, a torturous pinata, and the aforementioned unorthodox Santa – certainly aren’t.

Things are pretty bad in Hope Town.
The place is ruled by a violent sadist known as The Drake (Brian Downey), along with his two evil sons, Ivan (Nick Bateman) and Slick (Gregory Smith). The town is completely under their control, and the police utterly in their pocket. The streets are anarchy, violence reigns; murders, robberies, and rapes abound. Colloquially, the town has shrugged off its cheery name and is known on the street as 'Scum Town'.
Somehow this dreary location became the stopping off point for an old hobo (Rutger Hauer). Our hobo takes the train in - as hobos are wont to do - and begins his standard business of begging up some change. He soon has a nasty run-in with Drake's evil sons, and then makes good with Abby (Molly Dunsworth), a Hooker-with-a-Heart-of-Gold.

irector: Jason Eisener Writers: Jason Eisener, John Davies, Rob Cotterill Starring: Rutger Hauer, Gregory Smith, Molly Dunsworth, Brian Downey, Nick Bateman Riding into town on an open freight car train (as all Hobos do), we meet our shotgun-less Hobo (Rutger Hauer) as he approaches a new town and a new beginning. Our nameless Hobo jumps from the freight car to explore his new city, hoping for better opportunity. But what he soon realizes is that he landed in a psychopath controlled urban nightmare. This city isn't bound by justice or the law, but rather a criminal kingpin named Drake (Brian Downey) who terrorizes the good and weak with his viciously evil sons, Ivan (Nick Bateman) and Slick (Gregory Smith). At first the Hobo just wants to stay off of the radar. He dreams of starting his clean new life as he gazes at a used lawn mower in a pawn shop window.

Hauer's Hobo preaches to newborns in this cheesy clip Check out a clip from Hobo with a Shotgun, starring Rutger Hauer which some would enjoy and others would think a waste of 1 min 44 seconds of their time. The actioner which debuted at this year's Sundance Film Festival, also stars Gregory Smith, Robb Wells, Molly Dunsworth, Nick Bateman and Brian Downey. Plot: A train pulls into the station – it’s the end of the line. A Hobo jumps from a freight car, hoping for a fresh start in a new city. Instead, he finds himself trapped in an urban hell. This is a world where criminals rule the streets and Drake, the city’s crime boss, reigns supreme alongside his sadistic murderous sons, Slick & Ivan...

Bear in mind this is a red band clip therefore you probably don’t want to watch it if you’re squeamish! I got to see the movie at SXSW and it’s completely messed up but in a very good way. The movie uses insane violence but in a very comedic way keeping the audience entertained throughout. I guess you could liken it to The Grindhouse Style of movies in Planet Terror and Death Proof which if you’ve not seen, you simply must!

In case that first red band trailer for Jason Eisener’s “Hobo with a Shotgun” didn’t get you all pumped, here’s a second one to take a gander at. Well? You wanna see it yet or not? If this doesn’t work, let’s face it, it’s not your cup of tea. A vigilante homeless man pulls into a new city and finds himself trapped in urban chaos, a city where crime rules and where the city’s crime boss reigns. Seeing an urban landscape filled with armed robbers, corrupt cops, abused prostitutes and even a pedophile Santa, the Hobo goes about bringing justice to the city the best way he knows how – with a 20-gauge shotgun. Mayhem ensues when he tries to make things better for the future generation. Street justice will indeed prevail. Starring Rutger Hauer, Molly Dunsworth, Brian Downey, Gregory Smith and directed by Jason Eisener.
