Italian screen legend Franco Nero is having a busy year. “Recon,” the Robert Port-directed World War II thriller in which he stars, opened theatrically on Veteran’s Day in the U.S. as an event release and since then has been playing well online. German courtroom procedural “The Collini Case,” in which Nero has the title role, recently dropped Stateside on several platforms after scoring well theatrically in Germany. His Cuba set “Havana Kyrie” will also be coming out in the U.S. soon.
And Nero’s got plenty more projects in the pipeline including “Django Lives!” where he plans to reprise the role that brought him worldwide fame in Sergio Corbucci’s 1966 classic Spaghetti Western “Django.” On his birthday, the 79-year-old icon spoke exclusively to Variety from Rome, where he’s been stuck due to the pandemic, but was pleased to get flowers sent from England by his wife Vanessa Redgrave.

Lifetime explored one version of Egyptian queen Cleopatra in their Elizabeth Taylor biopic, "Liz & Dick," starring Lindsay Lohan, in 2012. Now, though, they're taking on another version of the legendary pharaoh.
Deadline reports that Lifetime is developing a four-hour miniseries written by Robert Port of "Numbers" and produced by Michael Goldstein and Mike Larkin ("Scoundrels").
Cleopatra, the final pharaoh in ancient Egypt, was known for her extraordinary beauty and her tumultuous affairs with Julius Caesar and Mark Antony of Rome.
According to historians, Cleopatra ultimately committed suicide, though her method remains unclear. Some say she died by encouraging a cobra to bite her, others that she drank poison or applied a toxic ointment.

Exclusive: After featuring Elizabeth Taylor’s Cleopatra as portrayed by Lindsay Lohan in its original movie Liz & Dick, Lifetime is now going for the real thing, putting in development a four-hour miniseries about the famous Egyptian queen. Written by Robert Port (Numbers) and produced by Michael Goldstein and Mike Larkin (Scoundrels), the mini tells the story of one of the most popular figures in ancient history. The last pharaoh of Ancient Egypt, Cleopatra is known mostly for her beauty; her liaisons with Rome’s Julius Caesar and Mark Antony; and her tragic suicide that was followed by the fall of Egypt, which became a Roman province. This is a rare multi-part miniseries for Lifetime, whose longform business has been focused primarily on TV movies. The cable network recently came on board History’s four-hour Bonnie & Clyde miniseries, which is being shared by the two sibling nets. It stars Holliday Grainger,...

Exclusive: TNT has put in development drama Hit based on an idea by Jamie Foxx. Co-written by Foxx and former Numbers co-executive producer Robert Port, Hit centers on two former high school football teammates and best friends — one a Qb, one a Wr -– who years later are “drafted” by the Miami P.D. and assigned to Hit (High Impact Team). The same shorthand that made them unstoppable on the gridiron makes them great partners taking down the most dangerous criminals in the city. Foxx and Port are executive producing with Foxx’s producing partner Jaime King. Fun fact: Both Foxx and Port are Oscar winners. Foxx of course, won for his portrayal of Ray Charles in Ray, while Port and Bill Guttentag won for their documentary Twin Towers. Foxx, repped by CAA and Rick Yorn, next is coming out in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained. His writing credits include co-creating The Jamie Foxx Show.

True-life American military tales are gunning for a real resurgence lately – what with Ben Affleck’s Argo, Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty, and the Robert Pattinson-starring Mission: Blacklist – and it looks like that means we’re not safe from a 3D take on such projects. A morning press release out of the Cannes Film Festival (oh, and heads up, get ready for a metric ton of these in the coming days) reveals that Freedom Films and Paradox Entertainment have made a deal to produce the “epic action pic Thunder Run,” based on the book “Thunder Run – The Armored Strike to Capture Baghdad.” In case that title doesn’t quite clue you in on the film’s subject matter, it will detail “the untold story of the dangerous and bloody capture of Baghdad by American Forces at the onset of the Iraq War. In April 2003, three battalions and fewer than a thousand men launched a violent...

Modern war films have rarely done well at the box office in the past decade that we've been at war in Afghanistan and Iraq. The audience that might come out to see films set during these wars either hasn't been interested in the stories being told, or would rather get their war fix from Call of Duty. So it isn't that surprising that we haven't seen much in the way of ambitious CGI mocap war films. Producers at a new company called Freedom Films (yep) are working to change that with an adaptation of David Zucchino's book Thunder Run: The Armored Strike to Capture Baghdad. As part of a gambit to get investors and distributors interested in the project, they've enlisted Gerard Butler, Sam Worthington and Matthew McConaughey to act in and voice the leads. A press release announces that Thunder Run will be directed by Simon West, who is currently making The Expendables 2.

Steve Keller and Mike Stone are back on "The Streets of San Francisco."
CBS is developing a contemporary remake of the classic 1970s cop series that starred Michael Douglas and Karl Malden.
Feature writer Sheldon Turner ("The Longest Yard") and "Numbers" producer Robert Port are penning the script, with Simon West on board to direct the potential pilot.
CBS Par TV, which owns the rights to Quinn Martin Prods.' original series, is producing the new take that has received a script order from the network.
Turner and Port, a certified member of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, had worked on reinventing "Streets" for the past seven months. They spent time in San Francisco, riding along with Sfpd cops.
The remake will keep key elements from the original series: the title, the names of the two main characters and, of course, the backdrop of the City by the Bay. But the main focus is to bring the spirit of the original "Streets" into the new reincarnation, Turner said.
"The times are very similar -- it was the Vietnam War in the 1970s and the Iraq War now," he said. "There is the same sort of tension between generations, and we wanted to carry that to the new series."
Turner compared the 21st century Keller and Stone to presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain.
"One, like Obama, wants to be active and believes in rehabilitation, while the other one, like McCain, doesn't quite believe in rehabilitation and believes that the enemy is the enemy," Turner said.
Turner and West, who has a deal at CBS Par TV, will executive produce the new "Streets," which also will feature elements of a traditional crime procedural. Port and West's producing partner, Jib Polhemus, serves as co-exec producer.
While several classic cop series such as "Starsky & Hutch" and "Miami Vice" have made the leap to the big screen, TV remakes, such as Dick Wolf's 2003 attempt to revive "Dragnet," have been rare.
Still, reinventions of old series are hotter than ever among the broadcast networks with such recent entries as NBC's "Knight Rider" and "The Bionic Woman" and CW's "90210."
Turner, whose credits also include "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning," and "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" director West are repped by CAA. Port, Oscar winner for "Twin Towers," is repped by UTA.
