Catherine Zeta-Jones could edge ever closer to becoming a member of the exclusive Egot club with her guest role in Netflix’s hit comedy series “Wednesday.” So far, only 18 people have achieved the feat of winning an Egot, which means winning the top prize in the four major entertainment fields of TV (Emmy), music (Grammy), film (Oscar), and theater (Tony).
Zeta-Jones is currently halfway there. She won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for “Chicago” in 2003 and then won a Tony Award in 2010 for Best Actress in a Musical for “A Little Night Music.” She has never been up for a Grammy herself, although “Chicago” did win the Grammy for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media. This award is given to the producers of the compilation soundtrack and not the specific performers of the songs themselves — performers are only credited as “various artists,...

Focus Features’ tearjerker “Spoiler Alert” is now open nationwide, and audiences everywhere are driving Kleenex stock through the roof. Based on TVLine founder Michael Ausiello‘s 2017 memoir “Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies,” the film is directed by Michael Showalter and it may or may not be the latest installment in the “Smurfs” movie series (you’ll have to watch it and decide for yourself). In all seriousness, “Spoiler Alert” details the ups and downs of Ausiello’s relationship with Kit Cowan, which tragically ends after Cowan passes away from neuroendocrine cancer.
“Spoiler Alert” reviews are pouring in at Rotten Tomatoes, where it currently has an 82 critics score and a 96 audience score. The acting duo of Jim Parsons and Ben Aldridge are receiving unanimous praise for their roles as Ausiello and Cowan, respectively, with Odie Henderson (Boston Globe) raving that the two male leads “have fantastic chemistry together.” Parsons is a...

Reviews
At times, it feels like you’re watching a stage play, but Fraser’s performance is one for the ages.
Randy Myers: San Jose Mercury News
“The Whale” is laughably earnest, larded with melodrama, and designed to shut down the long-standing association of human bulk with high spirits.
Anthony Lane: New Yorker
As a story, The Whale is compelling. As a film, The Whale is a tad shakier.
Alissa Wilkinson: Vox
Aronofsky, artisan of lost souls, finds compassion in the oddest of situations.

Question: What do Kathryn Hahn and Paul Rudd have to do to get some love from the Emmy Awards next year? Answer: Star in a buzzworthy AppleTV+ limited series that is one-part psychological drama, one-part dark comedy.
Despite their superstar status in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Hahn plays devious witch Agatha Harkness and Rudd has headlined a bunch of MCU blockbusters as fan-fave superhero Ant-Man), both actors have surprisingly struck out at the Emmys.

This new documentary film summarizes, illustrates and connects one of the principal structural elements of American society …. since the country began over 300 years ago. It is told through the discoveries of two white southern and privileged women who grew up uncomfortably aware of their own advantage in the long shadow of a disproportionately large disadvantaged population, that of the African Americans.
The argument that The Long Shadow cogently, convincingly makes is, that today descendants of millions of African slaves brought here still suffer discrimination and multiple entrenched social injustices which are specifically designed to keep these people down and exploited.
Director Frances Causey and Co-Creator and Editor Maureen Gosling attended the festival and I had the chance to talk with Maureen about the incredible amount of research that went into this film. “It’s surprising how much you can find by way of images through Google these days. Frances sent...

"Catching Fire," the second adaptation of Suzanne Collins' "Hunger Games" trilogy hits theaters this Friday in what's expected to be one of the biggest blockbusters of the year. Jennifer Lawrence, now an Oscar winner, returns as Katniss Everdeen, who won the 74th Annual Hunger Games in an act of defiance disguised as true love for her fellow Tribute Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson). The winners have to go on a Victory Tour of the Districts proving they're in love or Panem's President Snow (Donald Sutherland) will kill everyone they love. Instead of placating the President, Katniss ends up a symbol of a growing resistance to the totalitarian Capitol, so the President announces that the 75th Annual Hunger Games will feature not kids but former winners from each of the Districts. Having faced the Arena just the previous year, Katniss and Peeta must return to the Hunger Games once more and...

Despite Oz: The Great and Powerful pulling in a record breaking March box office of $80.2 million, the reviews for the prequel to the 1939 classic have been decidedly mixed. The film currently holds 60% favorability on Rotten Tomatoes (though it has an 82% audience rating), making it –perhaps- a worthy see, but that’s only 8% better than Bryan Singer’s Jack the Giant Slayer, which has taken in only $27 million in two-weeks of release based on a $200 million budget. While Oz cost roughly the same (though rumors suggest the film’s budget ballooned to $215 million) its reviews are bound connect with the viewing audience eventually, which should effectively drop the box-office totals next week by at least 60%. It should, though, coast for a win then, as nothing huge is scheduled to open.
The general consensus was that both James Franco and Mila Kunis were out of their depth for this type of film; both are good actors,...

First, the good news: 2012 was a really good year for movies. Now the bad: That means no matter who got an Oscar nomination this morning, there were bound to be a bunch of disappointed, but really deserving and talented, folks in Hollywood. Maybe they’ll take the relieved attitude this year’s host Seth MacFarlane suggested before making the announcements: “You can stop doing interviews where you pretend you had such a great time making the movie.”
The biggest snubs we saw were in the director category, where dark horse candidates Michael Haneke (Amour) and Benh Zeitlin (Beasts of the Southern Wild) edged out favorites Ben Affleck (Argo), Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty), Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained) and Tom Hooper (Les Miserables) — all of which were also nominated for Best Picture.
“No Best Director or Best Actor for Argo. Really? Even though it got a Best Picture nomination?” Deadline’s Dominic Patten wrote.

The Movie Pool goes Awol for the G.I. Joe: Renegades Season One Blu-ray!
The Set-up
This latest incarnation of the iconic G.I. Joe franchise follows a group of modern-day soldiers who go rogue after being framed as terrorists by an evil corporation called Cobra.
The Delivery
This Blu-ray set includes all 26 episodes of the outstanding animated series that premiered in November 2010 on The Hub TV network. Our initial review of the Renegades Season One, Volume One DVD set (which you can read here) pointed out a lot that we liked about this new take on G.I. Joe, and some things that we didn't like. Thankfully, having taken in a full season of the show, the pluses far outweigh the minuses.
Utilizing the original characters introduced in the classic A Real American Hero animated series of the 1980s, this new spin takes a handful of core characters (Duke, Scarlett,...

"ParaNorman"! Seemingly out of nowhere, this little gem of a movie comes along to break us out of our -- partially heat induced, partially whiskey induced -- coma of August. (Good grief, when will it all end? When?) On Monday, I expressed my fear that audiences will overlook this slice of greatness. I am not alone in my praise, as the reviews for "ParaNorman" are overwhelmingly positive. So, today, instead of doing a more common negative movie review roundup (admittedly, negative reviews are fun), let's, instead, take a look at the ten most unabashedly positive reviews of "ParaNorman."
10. “'ParaNorman’' is probably the year’s most visually dazzling movie so far, and the stunning climax centering on an 11-year-old witch (Jodelle Ferland) is too good to spoil." -- Lou Lumenick, New York Post
9. "This wryly funny take on the classic ghost story, with its tributes to horror thrillers from...

Kristen Stewart / Snow White, Snow White and the Huntsman Rupert Sanders’ Snow White And The Huntsman Reviews Pt.3 Snow White and the Huntsman is former commercials director Rupert Sanders’ first feature film. The medieval epic dark drama / romance / adventure along the lines of Game of Thrones and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring stars The Twilight Saga: Eclipse / The Runaways‘ Kristen Stewart as Snow White, Prometheus / Monster‘s Charlize Theron as the Evil Queen Ravenna, Red Dawn / The Avengers‘ Chris Hemsworth as the Huntsman, and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides / the announced The Quiet Ones‘ Sam Claflin as Prince William (the fairy-tale’s Charming one). Considering the Snow White plotline — fairest vs. fairestest — it was inevitable that film reviewers would compare — or at least mention side by side — the effectiveness of both Oscar winner Charlize Theron, 37 next August, and Kristen Stewart, 22, best known as...

Sam Claflin / Prince Charming, Snow White and the Huntsman (2012) Snow White And The Huntsman Reviews Pt.1 Directed by Rupert Sanders, Snow White and the Huntsman stars On the Road / Breaking Dawn – Part 2‘s Kristen Stewart as Snow White, Prometheus / Young Adult‘s Charlize Theron as the Evil Queen Ravenna, The Cabin in the Woods / The Avengers‘ Chris Hemsworth as the Huntsman, and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides‘ Sam Claflin as Prince Charming (William). To date, Snow White and the Huntsman reviews have been mixed — without extremes of “love” and “hate.” Those who enjoyed it have strong reservations; those who didn’t enjoy it, have given good notices to one or more cast members. Additionally, the film’s look has been generally singled out for extravagant praise. See below. "Haunted woods, Theron bathing in a vat of creamy milk, then smashing apart into dozens of flapping ravens… The images are stark and effective,...

Critics say 'American Pie' sequel 'should have graduated up to bigger and better things.'

Jason Biggs and Alyson Hannigan in "American Reunion"

As far as teen comedies go, "American Pie" is a fan favorite. Audiences found Stifler (Seann William Scott) endearing and couldn't stop talking about Jim's (Jason Biggs) infamous scene in the kitchen humping a pie. Now, an unlucky 13 years later, "American Reunion" transports the crew back in time to celebrate, with the whole cast reassembling for their East Great Falls High class reunion.
Unfortunately, it looks as though critics wished the characters let their reunion invitations get well acquainted with their trashcans. What had potential to restore the franchise after four straight-to-video spinoffs only left subtle feelings of nostalgia. We don't even think Biggs' full-frontal scene can save this one. Here's our roundup of what the critics are saying about...

Critics are divided, but one praises Oliver Stone sequel as 'urgent and strangely necessary.'

Twenty-three years ago, Oliver Stone's "Wall Street" finished third at the weekend box office, losing out to "Throw Momma From the Train" and "Three Men and a Baby."
Times, and tastes, have changed. Stone's sequel, "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps," is likely to nab this weekend's top box office slot. No matter that critics have not exactly been kind to the film since its Cannes opening in May, after which Stone was said to have headed back into the edit room in search of a new cut. What he found there should be enough to dispatch the animated owls of "Legend of the Guardians" and secure Stone his first #1 opener since 1999's "Any Given Sunday."

Robert Downey Jr. in "Iron Man 2"
Photo: Paramount Pictures
Two years after "Iron Man" blasted its way to near-universal critical praise and fanboy worship — and, oh yeah, $585 million in worldwide box-office sales — Robert Downey Jr. and director Jon Favreau are back to do it all again. Their task (to win both unanimous adoration and boatloads of cash) is one that even Tony Stark himself might find a bit daunting.
We already know "Iron Man 2" is going to do mega-business (early tracking has suggested it might have the biggest opening weekend in history), but the critical reception is another thing entirely.
In short, opinions are split. To some, "Iron Man 2" is a worthy (if not necessarily better) successor to the original, while others say the film sputters and crashes like a damaged metal super-suit.
