If you want to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design, it’s best to pick a project for which you can create frilly dresses from a bygone era. Since its introduction at the 1948 Academy Awards, this category has favored period pictures, including the 2021 winner “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Voters love to reward the creative forces behind such films, especially those that are about the aristocracy including recent champs “Marie Antoinette” (2007), “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (2008), “The Duchess” (2009), “The Young Victoria” (2010), and “Anna Karenina” (2013). (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscars Best Costume Design predictions.)
By the way, none of those films even competed for Best Picture. Indeed, only 20 of the most recent 73 Best Picture champs also won this award. Among these was “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004). Fantasy films such as this often boast Oscar-winning costumes, including 2022 champ “Cruella,” 2019 winner “Black Panther” and its...

Jessica Lange, Jim Parsons and Celia Keenan-Bolger will star on Broadway this spring in a world premiere production of Paula Vogel’s new Mother Play, to be directed by Tina Landau.
The Second Stage Theater production will begin a limited engagement at Second Stage’s Hayes Theater on Wednesday, April 3, with an official opening on Thursday, April 25.
Mother Play by Pulitzer Prize winner Vogel (How I Learned to Drive) is described by Second Stage as “a bitingly funny and unflinchingly honest new play about the hold our family has over us and the surprises we find when we unpack the past.”
The synopsis: “It’s 1962, just outside of D.C., and matriarch Phyllis is supervising her teenage children, Carl and Martha, as they move into a new apartment. Phyllis has strong ideas about what her children need to do and be to succeed, and woe be the child who finds their own path.

Birthday Candles, Noah Haidle’s Broadway dramedy starring Debra Messing as a woman who, over the course of the play’s 90 minutes ages from 17 to 107, has just about all the right ingredients for the poignant, funny and life-affirming experience it sets out to be. If everything doesn’t always come together just as it should, well, even an imperfect cake is better than no cake at all.
Opening tonight at the American Airlines Theatre, the Roundabout Theatre Company production of Birthday Candles casts the always likable Messing, having already won us over from her years on Will & Grace, as Ernestine, whom we first meet on her 17th birthday as she joins her mother in a yearly tradition of cake-baking.

Brave New World author Aldous Huxley, diplomat Clare Booth Luce and movie star Cary Grant now have two things in common: They all tried LSD, and they’ll all be subjects of a Broadway-bound musical being developed by a trio of theater’s most accomplished creators.
Lincoln Center Theater announced today it will produce a new musical in the spring called Flying Over Sunset, with book and direction by frequent Sondheim collaborator James Lapine, music by Tom Kitt (the Pulitzer-winning Next to Normal) and lyrics by Michael Korie (Tony-nominated Grey Gardens). “If Beale Street Could Talk” star Colman Domingo admires the tenacity, humor and heart of his character Joe Rivers — “an everyman with simple needs who does the extraordinary.” The playwright, director and Tony-nominated actor pushes boundaries himself, with his work and wardrobe. “I have always been a bit of a peacock,” he says. “I’ve pushed the envelope when it comes to looking masculine, sexy, tailored and fun.”
2011
“Twenty-four hours before this photo was taken, I was consulting Berry Gordy on his musical ‘Motown’ in Los Angeles,” Domingo recalls. Upon learning of his Tony nomination for “The Scottsboro Boys,” he flew to New York on a red-eye to attend the press conference. “Naturally, there was no time to think, so I chose something inspired by Toni-Leslie James, costume designer for the character for which I was nominated.” Domingo channeled “Mr. Bones” by way of a bow tie and mixed patterns from Hugo Boss.

For this summer’s first Free Shakespeare in the Park presentation (opening tonight), director Ruben Santiago-Hudson delivers an Othello that does its best to put the focus on the killer and his doomed Desdemona, but that weasel of all weasels Iago just won’t be ignored.
That’s partly because Corey Stoll plays the ultimate conniver with such a convivial air that turning away isn’t much of an option.
Much like the gimmick-free production itself – aside from bits of rock-star leather, Toni-Leslie James’ costumes are sumptuous black and gold period dress, as if to scotch any memory of last summer’s controversial Trumpian suit & tie Julius Caesar – Chukwudi Iwuji couldn’t be more straightforward as the fatally jealous Othello, whose love for Desdemona (Boardwalk Empire‘s Heather Lind) spirals into violent obsession.
Though the racial underpinnings of the play aren’t overlooked – more...

You almost have to feel sorry for Chukwudi Iwuji, the talented British actor who plays the title role in “Othello” in the Public Theater’s Shakespeare in the Park production that opened Monday.
He delivers a confident performance in an exquisite revival of the Bard’s classic tragedy, infusing the tragic Moor with both the cockiness of a war hero and the lustiness of a man who has wooed a woman seemingly above his station but whose ardor is very much at the forefront of his thoughts.
Like so many Othellos before him, though, Iwuji is ultimately upstaged by a truly brilliant performance by Corey Stoll as the duplicitous Iago. Stealing a page from his former “House of Cards” co-star Kevin Spacey, Stoll delivers a portrait of evil at its most charming and, dare I say, appealing.

The sounds of bass and horns begin to fill the spaces of the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, and director Ruben Santiago-Hudson perks up. “You can hear that ‘70s funk now!”
He and actor André Holland have been on a busy schedule promoting the current Broadway production of August Wilson’s Jitney, which officially opened Jan. 19, and it’s now a couple of hours before tonight’s performance will begin. But that sound check of the original blues score by composer Bill Sims Jr. sends a jolt of energy through the air.
“We have the most diverse audience on Broadway right now,” says Santiago-Hudson with infectious enthusiasm. “It’s not just a black audience, it’s a wonderful, diverse New York City audience. That's a bold, American statement: We the people, we're saying it's time!”
