By 1982, the martial arts movie in its traditional guise was starting to flounder. The era of the Kung Fu comedy was starting to fade, and the era of Jackie Chan was just starting to hit full gear as “Project A” was to come the next year and the modern action movie would begin to form. “The Postman Strikes Back” consequently falls somewhere in between and as it receives a fresh Blu-ray release from 88 Films, it’s time to step back and revisit a movie that probably deserves a bigger audience.

Back in 1974, Shaw Brothers director Chang Cheh together with a crew of around fifty people including his favorites David Chiang, Ti Lung and Fu Sheng, left Hong Kong and started producing films in Taiwan. His newfound team under the name of Long Bow Company would continue to produce films till 1976. Although Chang was making films independently, he was still related to Shaw Brothers which gave his full support.

Arrow will be re-releasing Sammo Hung’s Knockabout, available on North American Blu-ray and their streaming service Arrow, on March 28, 2023. To celebrate the release, Arrow has a new trailer to debut. Blu-ray details are located here.
Having established himself as Hong Kong’s premier action choreographer throughout the 1970s, Sammo Hung ended the decade by directing a non-stop assault of kung fu classics for Golden Harvest, starting with the brutal The Iron-Fisted Monk. But it would be his 1979 directorial effort that would finally give his Peking Opera brother-in-arms, acrobatic ace Yuen Biao, his first chance at leading man status: Knockabout!
Brothers and partners-in-crime, Yipao (Biao) and Taipao (Warriors Two‘s “Beardy” Leung Kar-Yan), have made an up-and-down career out of being hustlers, conning everyone from bank tellers to casino dealers. One day, they push their luck with the wrong man, martial arts master Chia Wu Dao (legendary Shaw...

Much like the Prom Night series, or in martial arts cinema the later additions to the Police Story franchise, the Tiger Cage films don’t feature ongoing characters or tell linked stories. The only real tie is that they share cast members and are all martial arts cop movies directed by Yuen Woo-Ping.
The Films
Tiger Cage is about an anti-drug team in the Hong Kong Police force in which there may be corruption, with potentially several of the task force members working with and supplying dealers. Simon Yam plays the head of the unit, while Jacky Cheung, Carol ‘DoDo’ Cheng, Bryan Leung and Donnie Yen are among the detectives he commands. The tone is largely quite serious, and that’s the film’s main downfall, because it’s not something that Yuen Woo-Ping does especially well. In particular, he’s prone to letting his cast overact. They’re having fun,...

Sammo Hung is regarded as one of the greatest Kung Fu performers of his generation. His high tempo, hard htting fight sequences have captured audiences all over the world. Future generations will look back and watch in amazement, witnessing one of the very best in world cinema.
Peking Opera Days
The Peking Opera school was run from a small theatre by Master Yu Jim Yuen, this was where Sammo Hung would begin his journey. In them days, the stundents would normally enroll for around 10 years, each day performing gruelling tasks for up to 18 hours a day which included training in the Martial Arts, weapons training, acrobatics, acting and singing. The Peking opera of course brought together Sammo Hung, Jackie Chan, Yuen Biao, Yuen Wah, Corey Yuen, Yuen Tak and Yuen Mo, who would eventually be known as the 7 Little Fortunes. Picking up the 3D glasses and walking into the cinema about to watch Ip man 3 on the big screen felt amazing. The cinema was packed, i placed myself on the second row and began the journey through Ip mans life for one last time, the final installment.
ContentsThe StoryMike TysonIp man vs Max ZhangThe Fight ChoreographyOverall Verdict The Story
The movie starts off with the introduction of Bruce Lee, played by (Danny Chan), here we get to see Ip man put Bruce through some movements and we get to see the first section of Ip man in 3D. In this scene the 3D is fine, it’s not amazing but it works well as Bruce showcases his moves in slow motion with kicks slicing through water in mid-air. Danny only really resembles Bruce Lee with a few mannerisms, but was nice to see Ip man and Bruce Lee on the...

I understand everyone will have their own personal favorites and some may not agree with my list and that’s fine because it’s nice to have different opinions on this genre which keeps it fresh and alive when having good debates.
Anyway, thank you for taking time to have a look at my 100 Great Kung Fu movie list and feel free to add any movies in the comment box if they don’t make my list (I have probably forgotten many movies).

I have decided that to make the list, a movie must have a few hand to hand moments during fight scenes in the movies chosen. If for example its mainly sword play with one fight scene hand to hand it won’t make the list. Its old school “style” Kung Fu movies, not modern day settings.

Golden Harvest started in 1970, after Raymond Chow had left Shaw Brothers studios along with producer Leonard Ho and decided to start there own company and go up against the dominance of Shaw Brothers.
Shaw Brothers had been the leading studio for many years, showcasing legendary Directors, Actors and Marital Artists. Raymond Chow and Leonard Ho knew they had to come with something big and make a huge noise in the world of cinema and indeed they did just that. They made a few movies in 1971 such as The Angry River, Lady Whirlwind and One Armed Boxer. But one Actor stood out over the rest, showcasing his incredible talent for the first time in a big movie and his name was Bruce Lee. When the Big Boss premiered in Hong Kong, the audience cheered and mobbed Bruce after the movie had ended.

What we lack more and more these days are epic fight scenes in the final part of kung Fu/Martial Art movies. We have seen less and less one on one fight scenes in the final battle over the past 15-20 years, which is a shame but we have seen recently a few flicks bringing that winning formula back.
I want to name a few of my favorite end fight scenes and please feel free to comment below, your favorite fight scenes and maybe they will be added to the future features. I only add fight scenes which i can find the clips for on youtube, so some classics might not be added to the lists.
1.Drunken Master 2 (1994)
Cast:Jackie Chan, Lau Kar Leung, Ti Lung, Anita Mui, Ken Lo, Andy Lau, Mark Houghton
Fight Choreographer: Lau Kar Leung, Jackie Chan
2.Ong Bak 2 (2008)

Jet Li, star of countless classic martial arts movies, teams up with the producer of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Kung Fu Hustle for Badge of Fury (aka Badges of Fury) a crime drama caper that is more caper than crime… Even though, at least on paper this would seem like a perfect Hong Kong action flick:
When a spate of murders erupt across Hong Kong, two kick-ass cops are assigned to the case. Chaos soon escalates when they reach a dead end and the detectives must play a deadly game to lure the killer out.
You see from that synopsis I was expecting something special, along the lines of New Police Story or (an undoubtedly sub-par) Infernal Affairs,...

Anita Mui 1963-2003
Anita Mui had a fantastic screen presence, an actress and a musician, she also did lots of work for charity. In the 80′s she became a household name within the music world and was dubbed the “Madonna of Asia”. She had a series of shows entitled the “Anita Classic Moment Live Concert” that consisted of eight shows at the Hong Kong Coliseum from 6 to 11 November and 14 to 15 November 2003, which were to be her last concerts before her death.
Anita made some great movies and was always surrounded by a great cast. Some movies you should check out are Behind the Yellow Line, Rouge, The Heroic Trio, Drunken Master 2, Miracles, Saviour of the Soul, Moon Warriors and many more.
Mui was originally cast in Zhang Yimou’s House of Flying Daggers (2004), but she resigned only two weeks before her death. Zhang had reserved her scenes to be shot...

Sammo Hung is a legend in the Kung Fu movie world and rightly so, starring and directing some of the greatest Kung Fu movies in the genre. Sammo as been acting since a some child during his days at the Peking Opera school, we later seen him taking on Bruce Lee at the beginning of the classic Enter The Dragon.
So i wanted to do a run down of my favorite Sammo Hung classics, kung fu style.
Warriors Two (1978)

Leung Kar Yan was born 20 January 1949, also known as Bryan Leung but to his fans “Beardy”, is a Hong Kong actor and director and despite being one of the most well-known faces in Hong Kong action cinema, he had no kind of martial arts training, relying on his talents to imitate the moves shown to him by the action directors.
His first break was in 1969 when he headed to the famous Shaw Brothers studio where he appeared in several renowned period kung fu films, such as Avenging Eagle, Shaolin Martial Arts and Bloody Avengers but didn’t really get a break as a leading character. In 1978 Legendary actor/director Sammo Hung got in touch with him and cast him as a villian in his then upcoming movie Enter The Fat Dragon,(A movie where sammo takes on the part of his fallen hero Bruce Lee). Many actors were given their...

Over the years having watched many kung fu movies, one person as stood out above the rest as my favorite villain, his name is Fung Hak On.
His presence on screen was fantastic, not only a great fighter and villain, but he is also a very good actor and could show lots of emotion with even one single look (Most look’s ended with someone getting killed though).
Birth-date : 18/9/1949
At the start of his career, Fung started off more as a stuntman and also having brief appearances in movies such as Vengeance, Heroic Ones, Water Margin plus many others. A few years later, the director he was working with at the time Chang Cheh, also had an assistant working with him, going by the name of John Woo. John Woo was just learning the process back then, but Fung was glad to work with Woo on his first ever directorial movie The Young dragons.

Leung Kar Yan has made so many classic kung fu movies, that this was a hard choice to put in order a Top 10, but here goes, i hope you all like it and please feel free to comment at the bottom of the page and also add your own if i miss your favorite out.
10.His Name Os Nobody
I really enjoyed this movie, there are some funny moments throughout the movie and although the kung fu isn’t really the main part of the movie till towards the end, it is still very enjoyable.

True Legend aka Su Qi-Er
Directed by Woo-ping Yuen
Written by Chi-long To
(2010) Hong Kong
Fantasia imdb
Beggar Su is the old man who trains Wong-Fei Hung (Jackie Chan) in the drunken fist style in the first Drunken Master, not coincidentally also directed by Woo-ping Yuen, so this film acts as a prequel to the Drunken Master films, explaining how Beggar Su came to be a drunk.
The film starts with Su Qi-Er as a successful and respected general alongside his two best friends Ma (Xiaodong Guo) and his blood-brother Yuan Lie (Andy On). After a thrilling rescue of a kidnapped Imperial prince, Yu is offered a position as governor and advised to send the erratic Yuan into exile. Instead, Yu gives his sword to Ma, retires from the army and ensures that Yuan gets the post as governor.
Yu Qi-Er’s problem is that True Legend is not just a prequel to Drunken Master,...

It's fairly common to see a humble warrior rise to greatness in film - especially within kung fu movies - but it's not quite as common when the rising warrior is also completely and utterly out of his mind.
Su Can (Vincent Zhao) has it all together when things are going reasonably well. He's just led an army through a crushing victory as its general, and is on his way to being promoted to governor. Humble to a fault, he instead passes the promotion onto his brooding foster-brother, and returns home to study his beloved Wu Shu and spend time with his wife and son.
He might have made a better choice; it turns out that his foster brother,...
