Exclusive: Deadline has an exclusive 17-minute suite composed by Henry Jackman for Joe and Anthony Russo’s Netflix tentpole The Gray Man, which hits select theaters today, and will make its way to the streamer on July 22.
The action-thriller is the most expensive Netflix has made to date, at a production budget north of 200M. It centers on CIA operative Court Gentry (Ryan Gosling)—aka, Sierra Six. Plucked from a federal penitentiary and recruited by his handler, Donald Fitzroy (Billy Bob Thornton), Gentry was once a highly-skilled, Agency-sanctioned merchant of death. But now the tables have turned and Six is the target, hunted across the globe by Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans), a psychopathic former cohort at the CIA, who will stop at nothing to take him out. Fortunately, Agent Dani Miranda (Ana De Armas) has his back.

After nearly half a year of negotiations, Netflix has closed a deal for the next big-budget movie from Joe and Anthony Russo.
The duo, known for the Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame mega-blockbusters, will direct The Electric State for the streaming giant, a move that reunites them with the company behind their current project, the action movie The Gray May, which debuts in July.
Millie Bobby Brown, the breakout star of Netflix’s Stranger Things, is on board to star in the feature, with Chris Pratt, who appeared in the Russos’ Avengers movies, in talks to join her.
Christopher Markus, Stephen McFeely, longtime Russo scribes who worked on Gray Man as well as the Avengers pics, are writing the script.
The cost isn’t cheap. The project was previously set up at Universal, which eventually balked at the price tag and put it into turnaround.

Whether it’s filming a major musical number or epic action sequence, camera operators are responsible for the media audiences consume.
Camera operator Mitch Dubin’s 17th film with director Steven Spielberg is the upcoming “West Side Story.” The musical presented Dubin with opportunities to harness new techniques, such as wearing an earpiece to listen to the score while filming.
“Normally, you take your cues visually, but in a dance film like [this] if I wait for the visuals of a dancer leaping in the air, I would be late,” explains Dubin. “I had to have the music to understand exactly when [to move and focus].”
Dubin, who has been recognized as Camera Operator of the Year and a Lifetime Achievement Award winner by the Society of Camera Operators, says the job requires “being in sync with the actors, understanding the emotional content of every lens [and] the storytelling perspective of every position.”

If you’ve seen “Joker” you’ll know one of the key scenes is when Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) is on the subway and in a “defining moment” transforms into Joker. The entire sequence is like a “fever dream moment,” as cinematographer Lawrence Sher describes it. From the camera angles to the lighting and colors, even the technology used, all added to the tensions of that scene.
Sher breaks down the stair dance that comes towards the end of the movie, once Fleck has fully transformed into Joker and does his “Victory dance,” “descending into his own darkness.”
The D.P. takes a deep dive into the key scenes, framing the scene below and breaking down the main elements.

There was definitely an intent on this movie to try to create frames that were tension-filled. I placed certain rules on myself and the camera operator for that...

I didn’t go to Reading, or Leeds, this year. I haven’t woken this morning in a field. No, I’ve woken this morning surrounded by empty cans wearing pyjama bottoms and a Converge T Shirt. Most painful of all about my not having gone to Reading, or Leeds, most heartachingly painful of all, is that I didn’t see The Cure play a majestic three hour set.
Watching them from the comfort of my bed, attired in the aforementioned, on BBC iPlayer is not the same. Hangover breakfast of champions or not; gammon steak and scrambled egg (I like protein) splashed with mustard and red sauce. Chased of course with a coffee and a cigarette.
However, by way of compensation I have been gifted with something this week. That something is Wild Nothing’s sophomore effort Nocturne. How this is compensation will be made clear soon.

New York - After three years of decline, the radio industry returned to revenue growth last year as an improving economy, elections and rebounding auto makers boosted advertising results.
Radio revenue rose 6 percent, its biggest annual growth rate in more than a decade, from $16 billion to nearly $17.3 billion, the Radio Advertising Bureau said Friday.
The gain came after an 18 percent drop in 2009, a 9 percent decline in 2008 and a 2 percent decrease in 2007, according to the Rab. In 2006, radio revenue had grown 1 percent to $21.7 billion.
"Coming off solid results through the first three quarters of 2010, radio's 7 percent increase in the fourth quarter and full-year gain of 6 percent cap the year on a strong note - the best comparative figures we've seen in over a decade," said Rab president and CEO Jeff Haley.

The radio industry was touting a healthy recovery Wednesday, based on a first quarter that saw advertising revenue rise 6% year-over-year, the biggest gain in three years.
The Radio Advertising Bureau said local ad revenue was up 2%, and national grew 19%. With network, digital and off-air advertising thrown in, revenue in the first quarter grew 6% to $3.7 billion.
"Radio's momentum is outpacing that of other traditional media," Rab chief Jeff Haley said. "First-quarter results prove that advertisers have found and, in many instances, rediscovered radio."
The biggest category of radio advertisers during the quarter encompassed communications/cellular and public utilities, which spent $351 million. The next largest category was TV networks and cable providers, up 23% to $276 million.
In the latter category, Comcast increased its spending 32% to $61 million, ABC increased radio ad spending 105% to $32 million and USA Network 429% to $12 million.
