Friends, colleagues, and David Letterman fans were shocked to learn of the sudden death of Letterman’s longtime director Jerry Foley last weekend.
Now Letterman’s YouTube channel is paying tribute as only they can, with a brand new ten-minute documentary featuring Foley speaking about his work on the show.
In the video, which was posted late Wednesday, Foley discusses how he originally worked as a technical director for Live at Five, Wnbc’s local news show that shot in the studio across the hall from Letterman’s NBC show.
Watching the Letterman show shoot just feet away, he recalls, “I was just a kid with my nose pressed against the glass… it was everything I wanted to be a part of.”
Eventually Foley made his way across the hall, working under the show’s original director, Hal Gurnee.
In 1993, he followed Gurnee and Letterman to CBS and the Ed Sullivan Theater,...

Jerry Foley, the longtime director of David Letterman’s late night talk shows, has died. He was 68.
Foley died Sunday at Albany Medical Center in New York after a skiing accident in Vermont, TV producer Kim Reynolds, who began her career at Late Show With David Letterman alongside Foley, told The Hollywood Reporter.
The lifelong New Yorker was born in 1956 and raised in Staten Island. He served as the director and supervising producer of Letterman’s late night talk shows for 25 years — a control room feat considering Foley had to track and capture the host’s perpetual and unpredictable comedy antics.
“Your primary responsibility is not to get in the way. Don’t smother it. Don’t miss it,” Foley told DGA Quarterly in 2009 of capturing Letterman and his guests performing onstage, cutting back and forth between the smirking or mugging host and a guest or widening to two-shots — or...

Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul were upset in their respective acting categories, but Breaking Bad won the night’s top prize, taking home its first Emmy for Best Drama. It was an unpredictable night in several major categories: In addition to The Newsroom’s Jeff Daniels taking home the trophy for Best Actor in a Drama and Boardwalk Empire’s Bobby Cannavale winning for Supporting Actor, Veep’s Tony Hale and Nurse Jackie’s Merritt Wever were surprise winners — Wever was so shocked that she practically ran off the stage without delivering an acceptance speech.

So another year has passed and its time for another round of awards for the people who make the television shows we like to watch.
Television is interesting these days. Never before have we seen such great, creative output. Never before have we been subjected to such drivel. It all gets paraded before us tonight, as we watch the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards (handed out, it should be noted, by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences) on CBS, CTV in Canada.
8:00
Interesting that the Emmys chose to introduce the 2009 edition of the Primetime awards by harkening back to the early days of television. Especially as the business of television has never been closer to a complete collapse. Oh, announcer who is trying so hard to sound like a TV host from the '50s. You don't sound at all like you're a three pack-a-day smoker.

It's a good day for funny people, especially if your name is Tina Fey or Seth MacFarlane.
Fey's series, 30 Rock, was handed 22 Emmy nominations this morning, which stands as a record for a comedy series. She and Alec Baldwin were also nominated for acting awards. Plus, for the first time some of the other actors on NBC's laffer were recognized. Jane Krakowski, Jack McBrayer and Tracy Morgan all picked up supporting nominations.
MacFarlane's Family Guy was also nominated for best comedy series, the first time an animated show has cracked that category since The Flintstones in 1961. Two years ago MacFarlane decided to pull his show from contention in the animated series category to have it considered for best comedy.
Mad Men, the drama about the advertising world in the sixties, picked up 16 nominations in the drama categories, including a best actor nod for Jon Hamm. Hamm is also nominated as...
