Don Murray, the venturesome actor who earned an Oscar nomination for playing a rodeo cowboy smitten by Marilyn Monroe in Bus Stop, then spurned Hollywood’s attempts to mold him, has died. He was 94.
Murray’s son Christopher announced his dad’s death to The New York Times without providing details.
The actor was also known for the interesting parts he went after in such serious films as A Hatful of Rain (1957), The Hoodlum Priest (1961) and Advise & Consent (1962).
Fresh off a starring role in a 1955 Broadway revival of Thornton Wilder’s The Skin of Our Teeth, Murray was sought by director Joshua Logan to portray Bo Decker, the naive Montana man who falls for the chanteuse Chérie (Monroe), in Bus Stop (1956). It was his first movie, and he was 26 at the time.

In the late ’70s and early ’80s, CHiPs was one of the hottest shows on television, and the show turned its stars, Larry Wilcox and Erik Estrada, into instant celebrities, with their faces adorning T-shirts, posters, and schoolkids’ lunchboxes everywhere. Wilcox has great memories of the years he spent on the show. Speaking at a fan event, he talked about some of the things that made him proud to be on CHiPs. With “Dancing with the Stars” returning for a 32nd season this fall on ABC after switching last year to Disney+, there’s a long list of celebrities who deserve a chance on the dance floor. Two of my past suggestions came true: Frankie Muniz (who came in third on season 25) and Kel Mitchell (who came in second on season 28). Below are six male stars I think the show should consider inviting to compete for the next Mirror Ball Trophy. Do you agree with these picks? Vote in our poll at the bottom of this post to let us know who you’d most like to see on “DWTS.” And feel free to sound off in the comments about what other stars you’d like to see when the show comes back in September.

I’ll be the first to admit my mistakes. When I made that Alligator 2 defense, and no, doing that video is not the mistake I’m referring to, I mentioned that the giant monster movie had become somewhat of a lost art, particularly in the ’90s. Then I ended up rewatching Anaconda (watch it Here) and realized I had totally forgotten about it. That’s because it got lost in the likes of Deep Blue Sea and Lake Placid. Both those movies seem to have longer lasting impacts. Deep Blue Sea has that great surprise kill and Lake Placid has, well, it has Betty White. There are others, too. Heavy metal fans are confident they know the identity of Doll on The Masked Singer. Doll made his debut on ’80s Night, along with Moose and Scorpio, who were sent home after revealing themselves. Meanwhile, Doll won the night’s King of The Masked Singer title, so his identity remains a mystery. Based on his voice, height, and the clues, though, many Masked Singer viewers are sure Doll is Twisted Sister lead vocalist Dee Snider. Here’s all the evidence.

Were you as shocked as we were while watching “The Masked Singer” on March 29 to discover that the celebrity competing as the Doll was a man? When the character first appeared onstage at the start of the 80’s Night episode, we thought it was a woman hiding inside this elaborate costume. Only when we heard the Doll sing “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” by Simple Minds did we realize that we had been duped.
The judges were just as surprised as we were. By the time the Doll sang “Hungry Like the Wolf” by Duran Duran in the Battle Royal against Scorpio, we were focused on figuring out the name of the fellow that had fooled us. We’ve rewatched both of his performances and his clues package. Forget those guesses by them that Doll is Sebastian Bach, Gene Simmons or Donnie Wahlberg. We are sure we’ve know Doll’s true identity.

For six seasons, starting in 1977, CHiPs took a lighthearted look at law enforcement through the adventures of Ponch and Jon, a couple of California Highway Patrol motorcycle patrolmen who had a knack for finding themselves in the middle of the action — action that often included outrageous chases, crazy crashes, and big pile-ups. Larry Wilcox, who starred (and rode) alongside partner Erik Estrada, has a lot of great memories of making the show. Walter Mirisch’s slam-bang, eardrum-pounding Sensurround stock footage orgy for the Centennial Year gathers an impressive lineup of big stars to celebrate the U.S. Navy’s biggest aircraft carrier battle: Charlton Heston, Henry Fonda, James Coburn, Glenn Ford, Hal Holbrook, Toshiro Mifune. Director Jack Smight manages the talky, exposition-laden account of a sprawling, complicated battle rather well, at least in terms of clarity. What is unwatchable pan-scanned on TV isn’t half bad for fans of big-scale war movies. Pi gives us an approximation of Sensurround (I think), and also John Ford’s short subject The Battle of Midway from 1942.

“The Masked Singer” judges — Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy, Ken Jeong and Nicole Scherzinger — had a lot to prove in the Group B playoffs after failing to guess the identity of the Elephant (it was skateboarding legend Tony Hawk) last week. On Wednesday night, the five surviving members of Group B performed their hearts out on the stage, but was Banana, Frog, Kitty, Mouse or Taco eliminated? And did any of the regular panelists or guest judge Gabriel Iglesias correctly guess their true identity?

As Sam Shepard’s True West brothers grim, Ethan Hawke and Paul Dano dig deep into the loamy earth of that macho post-hippie neo-cowboy near-masterpiece, mucking about the desert-edge-of-suburbia drama and surviving (we assume) to face another tequila sunrise. Shepard’s 1980 near-Pulitzer elegy for an authentically brutal frontier that’s faded into a brutally make-believe dreamland might not carry the same are we not real men urgency of the panicky sensitive-male era in which the playwright first mourned his mythologized West, but its apparent appeal for a certain type of meat-seeking actor persists.
All of which is to say, Hawke and Dano are well-suited in both temperament and talent for the Roundabout’s Broadway revival of Shepard’s once-shocking blast of new wave absurdism, opening tonight at the American Airlines Theatre. Directed by James Macdonald, True West fights its battles on a homey (but ever so trashable) two-room set, no...

Cage is on magnificent, mind-boggling form as a chainsaw-wielding lumberjack hunting the gang who invaded his home
Now I need someone to kiss me and stop me from shaking. Mandy, starring Nicolas Cage, is a death-metal horror about a guy seeking revenge for the murder of his girlfriend … named Mandy. There is some serious vexation here. The displeasure is brought onstream. Granted, every YouTube consumer knows about “Cage rage”. But this time Cage really is as cross as two sticks.
This outrageously over the top film is nothing if not uninhibited, often visually amazing, not to say barking mad. There has been some discussion about how Cage is revolutionising acting, challenging the naturalist consensus. And maybe he is – although it’s possible that Mandy is his tribute to how an American version of Sir Donald Wolfit might play Titus Andronicus. Cage certainly takes us way beyond the laugh with/laugh at debate.

Joseph Wambaugh’s breakthrough novel went through a blender to fit George C. Scott into the narrative, but it’s still a great cop show with terrific work from Stacy Keach and Scott Wilson, not to mention Jane Alexander and Rosalind Cash. The pro-cop agenda has a definite tone of personal experience, and the grim finish is anything but feel-good puffery.

The clock is ticking down, the party’s getting started, and no one is prepared for… New Year’s Evil (1980). Okay, I just made up that slogan, but it encapsulates the spirit of this Cannon release; perhaps not in execution, as its perspective is definitely from an earlier era at odds with the then current slasher boom. This is its strength, as it dares to be different from the masked forays of the day. (Fine, he wears a mask once - but that’s all, I swear!)
Released on December 26th (or Boxing Day, as we Canucks call it), this Golan-Globus production didn’t stir up the box office and was summarily dismissed by critics as yet another tiring slash and gash. And while it certainly adheres to a few popular elements of the sub-genre, it chooses to upend that by focusing on its antagonist rather than the protagonist. For this alone,...

Happy Independence Day, everyone! While most of us in the Us are busy with BBQs and enjoying some outdoor fun, that doesn’t mean this week’s Blu-ray and DVD releases are taking any time off, as we have a handful of titles making their debuts on July 4th.
Scream Factory has given the cult psychological thriller Windows something of an HD upgrade this week with their brand new Blu-ray, and we have several indie titles arriving on both formats as well, including Accidental Exorcist, Here Alone, Bethany, and Awakening the Zodiac. Rounding out the July 4th home releases are Peelers and a 9-movie creature feature set on DVD featuring all sorts of murderous beasties.
Accidental Exorcist (Cinedigm, Blu-ray & DVD)
A 30-something, dirt-poor alcoholic (Daniel Falicki) can't hold down a day job or maintain a normal life due to the fact that he is a natural-born exorcist. He soon learns...

The obstacle course of red, white and blue tires is the same, but the dunk tank is a bit more extreme as ABC wages a new Battle of the Network Stars starting Thursday, June 29 at 9/8c.

For the unfortunately uninitiated of you, gather ’round as I spin a yarn about the original intra-network “field day” competition that aired on ABC during the 1970s and ’80s, pitting the Alphabet network against CBS and NBC and… well, that was it, kids. PBS and the...

This is either going to be really good or so bad, it’s great. But either way, ABC’s relaunch of Battle of the Network Stars (premiering Thursday, June 29 at 9/8c) is looking like the summer’s must-see — especially since on Tuesday the full list of competitors was released. The celebrities we’re most psyched to see throwing down in events like the kayak relay race and dunk tank:

Dan Aykroyd has taken to Facebook to further comment upon the Ghostbusters remake, expanding on comments he made to Britain's Channel 4 that Lrm discussed a couple days ago. In the comment, he changes his tune on whether or not the original characters should have been involved.
Paul Feig made a good movie and had a superb cast and plenty of money to do it. We just wish he had been more inclusive to the originators. It cost everyone as it is unlikely Kristen, Leslie, Melissa and Kate will ever reprise their roles as Ghostbusters which is sad.
Where to begin. As the screenwriter of the original movie and with his agent Bernie Brillstein as one of the producers, Dan had a lot more power than your average screenwriter and actor when it came to a potential remake. Add onto that the fact that Ivan Reitman, the original director, had...

Exclusive: SpongeBob writer and The Simpsons exec producer penned screenplay.
Lionsgate UK has swopped on CGI animation El Americano – 3D featuring a voice cast of Lisa Kudrow, Edward James Olmos, Rico Rodriguez, Cheech Marin, Kate del Castillo, Erik Estrada, Mexico’s Adal Ramones, and comedians Gabriel Iglesias, and Paul Rodriguez.
The film will launch in the third quarter of this year as Cuco’s Big Adventure and is directed by Mexican animation ace Ricardo Arnaiz (La Leyenda De La Nahuala) and co-directed by Mike Kunkel, an animator who worked on Disney films like Tarzan & Hercules.
SpongeBob writer Richard Pursel and The Simpsons executive producer Phil Roman co-wrote the screenplay, and Kudrow also serves as executive producer.
Grindstone Entertainment previously acquired all North American rights from FilmSharks, who also licensed all Us streaming rights to Netflix, and Latin America to Sony Pictures Television, among other deals.

One half of the CHiPs TV series’ iconic duo doesn’t show up in the big screen reboot – and now he’s revealing why.
Larry Wilcox – who portrayed California Highway Patrolman Jon Baker in the 1977-1983 show – does not make a cameo in the new film, although his former castmate, Erik Estrada – aka Frank “Ponch” Poncharello – does.
“It’s a complex issue, but basically, I wasn’t invited to my own party,” Wilcox told Vulture.
In the new CHiPs, Dax Shepard – who both wrote and directed the film – portrays Jon, and Michael Peña is Ponch.

Borrowing character names and a few elements from the Larry Wilcox- and Erik Estrada-led television drama CHiPs, Dax Shepard’s remake feels more like a big-budget reboot of his delightful shit-kicking action comedy Hit and Run. His sophomore feature as a director delivers, fittingly, a few sophomoric laughs operating at the same frantic energy level as his previous film. Although its structure is similar to that of a loose Judd Apatow sensibility (which can be quite painful, as was the “extended cut” of the 40-Year-Old Virgin), CHiPs is a buddy comedy that’s more interested in homosocial bonding than the actual mission. The problem is the bonding, as sweet as it is, grows a little tiring and the film is structured so that we’re far ahead of our heroes, and where’s the fun in that?
