From the majestic-but-aged environs inhabited by the British royals Netflix’s in “The Crown” and the decadent sun-drenched luxury of the San Domenico Palace resort in Taormina, Sicily, in HBO’s “The White Lotus” to the foreboding Ontario wilderness where a girls’ soccer team is stranded in Showtime’s “Yellowjackets,” the locations used in this year’s Emmy-nominated dramas loom so large they can be viewed as characters unto themselves that interact with the performers and help shape the narrative.
It’s especially true of the role Albuquerque, N.M., plays in AMC’s “Better Call Saul.” There’s no telling if the series would even exist if creator Vince Gilligan had gotten his way back in the mid-2000s and the studio suits at Sony agreed to let him use Riverside, Calif., as the setting for its predecessor “Breaking Bad” (2008-2013), which established the “Saul” characters and their dramatic universe.

Based on George Rr Martin’s Fire & Blood, the HBO and Max series House of the Dragon had a daunting task in being compared to the network’s biggest-ever series Game of Thrones. Set 200 years earlier in House Targaryen, House of the Dragon’s first season was a huge success reflected in the ratings and the nine Primetime Emmys for which the show got nominated.
Three of its Emmy nominees joined a panel for the show at Deadline’s Contenders Television: The Nominees: Cinematographer Catherine Goldschmidt, nominated for “The Lord of the Tides,” Episode 8; production designer Jim Clay, nominated for “The Heirs of the Dragon,” Episode 1; and visual effects supervisor Angus Bickerton, nominated for his work over the show’s full season.

Celebrating television might feel like a wasted effort right now, especially since 11,500 writers and 160,000 actors are walking the picket lines for the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. But it would be unfair to overlook the extraordinary work of so many Emmy-worthy creatives, even if the ongoing dispute between the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers prevents writers and actors from talking about the very series that got them a ticket to the 75th annual Primetime Emmy Awards in the first place. Sadly, everyone will have to wait until January 2024 to see who will accept their just rewards. But this year’s Contenders Television: The Nominees virtual livestream event that kicks off Saturday at 10 a.m. Pt will certainly make it worth the wait.

“Our approach was embrace and expand,” reveals production designer Jim Clay about the designing the world of HBO’s epic “House of the Dragon.” For our recent webchat he adds, “There’s a huge fan base there and there would be an expectation from that fun base to continue the feel and be familiar with the world. We wanted to recreate that familiarity and then expand it into our own extended world. We had leeway as ‘House of the Dragon’ is two centuries before ‘Game of Thrones,’ so there’s a little bit of flexibility there. But we wanted the audience to feel they were in the same show, whilst establishing our own show.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

When the dust settled on the 2023 Emmy nominations, HBO and Max came out on top with a whopping 127 bids. Eight of those are for “House of the Dragon,” the “Game of Thrones” prequel series that set the water cooler on dragonfire with its breathtaking production values, unexpected twists and mind-blowing time jumps. Even though “HotD” was skunked in the acting, writing and directing races, it still scored a Best Drama Series citation and received key notices for its crafts. Read on for a closer look at “House of the Dragon’s” eight nominations.
In the main series race, “HotD” competes against three fellow HBO dramas that each nabbed more than 20 nominations: “Succession” (27), “The Last of Us” (24) and “The White Lotus” (23). Then there’s Disney+’s “Andor” (8), AMC’s “Better Call Saul” (7), Netflix’s “The Crown” (6) and Showtime’s “Yellowjackets” (3). HBO’s domination in this category is impressive when you consider...

Curated by the IndieWire Crafts team, Craft Considerations is a platform for filmmakers to talk about recent work we believe is worthy of awards consideration. In partnership with HBO, for this edition, we look at how design and performance were used to capture the dramatic arc of King Viserys’ reign in Season 1 of “House of the Dragon.”
Set 170 years prior to “Game of Thrones,” the filmmakers behind the prequel “House of the Dragon” drew inspiration from the eight seasons of the Emmy-winning series, but their story was set far enough in the past that they never felt beholden to it. Explained production design Jim Clay, “The European medieval genre is pretty familiar now across the cinematic and TV world, and so early conversations with [Season 1 showrunners] Miguel [Sapochnik] and Ryan [Condal] were about pushing the envelope into a slightly different world.” Early on, the consensus was leaning into the design of late Roman and...

As a prequel to “Game of Thrones,” “House of the Dragon” could be an awards magnet (and has already won Best Drama Series at the Golden Globes). But despite “Thrones” winning more than two dozen Visual Effects Society Awards over the course of its run, “Dragon” was upset by “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” for Best Visual Effects in a Photoreal Episode. Next, the two fantasy epics will face off at the February 18 Art Directors Guild Awards. Can “Lotr” keep “Hotd” at bay again?

Ruben Östlund’s latest satire, Triangle of Sadness, dominated the European Film Awards with four wins, including Best Film, the evening’s top prize.
Östlund also picked up the Best Screenplay and Best Director Awards for his work on the film, and Zlatko Burić nabbed Best Actor for his leading role.

You probably noticed the balls.
The premiere episode of House of the Dragon included a few scenes with King Viserys’ Small Council of advisors in the Red Keep. Unlike HBO’s Game of Thrones, each member of the royal council in the prequel series had a different colored stone in front of them on a marble dish. There’s also a larger dish in the center of the table that houses the markers when its member isn’t present.
So what, exactly, is the deal with the balls?
Set decorator Claire Nie Richards and production designer Jim Clay came up with the plates and stones as a way of setting the table. “It represented the council coming in and being part of the meeting,” Richards says.

Kenneth Branagh’s “Death on the Nile” cruises into movie theaters on Feb. 11 and while the title suggests that the film’s lavish setting was Egypt, more than a little movie magic was involved.
Branagh reprises his role as one of literature’s best-loved detectives, Hercule Poirot, with a cast that includes Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, Jennifer Saunders, Annette Bening, Sophie Okonedo, Russell Brand, Ali Fazal and Dawn French. The film’s shoot was intended to take place in Egypt, but that proved too difficult. The team then considered Morocco, which often stands in for other desert countries, but by the time cameras started to roll in 2019, it was decided to make England work instead. Production designer Jim Clay says, “Egypt was created with a big talented team of construction people and our director of photography and visual effects supervisors” and built at the Longcross Studios in Surrey, U.K.

“It was quite emotional at times for him and for us,” production designer Jim Clay reveals when asked about bringing writer/director Kenneth Branagh‘s childhood to life on screen in his semi-autobiographical coming of age fable “Belfast.” “It’s daunting on one hand, but because we had that time with Ken and it was a direct insight into the world he remembered,” he says. Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Kenneth Branagh’s “Belfast” is a film he holds near and dear to his heart, as the semi-autobiographical movie is a touching love letter to his childhood. Jude Hill stars as Buddy, a young boy growing up amid the rising political tensions of Ireland in the ’60s. An explosion on the street where his home is early in the opening scenes informs his parents’ eventual decision to move the family away from the city.
Putting family front and center was key for Branagh, who both wrote and directed. But equally important was remembering Buddy’s perspective.
Branagh says, “In the cut and framing, we talked about keeping the audience positively unsettled in the way the boy is.”
In a scene at a gate, when a villain comes up behind Buddy’s father, played by Jamie Dornan, “we’re very low on the ground,” the director explains. “You could say also...

In their Telluride Film Festival review, Deadline’s Pete Hammond says, “As noted the black and white cinematography is stunning, along with very impressive production design from Jim Clay another frequent artisan Branagh works with (the entire Belfast neighborhood was reconstructed in England). The sound track comes mostly from another Belfast native, Van Morrison who contributed eight songs from his archive plus a new one. There is no question it adds significantly to the sound and feel of this terrific film. It is one of the year’s best movies, no doubt.”

Between “Artemis Fowl” and the beleaguered, still-to-come “Death on the Nile,” Kenneth Branagh is coming off somewhat of an iffy run. The film is set to world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival this weekend before screening at the Toronto International Film Festival later this month. Focus Features is releasing “Belfast” stateside on November 12 and into hopeful Oscar contention. Watch the trailer for the film below.

Coming on the heels of the Venice debut this week of Paolo Sorrentino’s memories of growing up in 1980s Naples is a trip back in time for yet another celebrated director, and of course actor: Kenneth Branagh. He revisits the memories of being 9 years old and growing up in Belfast, Northern Ireland, right in the middle of troubles breaking out between the Protestants and the Catholics that so ravaged the country. Like Sorrentino, Branagh says it has taken a long time, 50 years to be exact, to sort out those memories and try to put them into some (fictionalized) context that has universal meaning all these years later.
For the director, who was born in Belfast at the end of 1960, he has struck a tone of joyful family life mixed with the terrifying breakout of hostilities between the two factions that changed things forever in his neighborhood and the country,...
