#10. Lovers Lane (1999)
Before Anna Faris was spoofing Scary MOVIEs and wooing the world as The House Bunny, she happened to stroll down Lovers Lane, a listless paint-by-numbers slasher flick about a man who went on an indiscriminate murder spree on Valentine’s Day 13 year prior, only to return to town to stalk and slash the victims’ children, foully disemboweling them with his hook-handed murder weapon. The 1983 cult sword-and-sorcery movie Deathstalker produced by Roger Corman is getting resurrected, this time as a 21st century comic book.
Guns N’ Roses rocker Slash and Vault Comics have teamed up for the comic, which will also have involvement from Shout! Studios, the owner of the rights to the Corman library, and Raven Banner Entertainment.
Tim Seeley, best known for his work as the co-creator of horror comic Hack/Slash and DC’s Grayson, is writing the comic, with Jim Terry handling art. The duo previously teamed for West of Sundown, a Western vampire comic from Vault. Steven Kostanski, the creature effects artist and filmmaker who has directed segments for the V/H/S and ABCs of Death movies as well as horror flicks such as Psycho Goreman, wrote the story for what is being described as a reimagining.

For the past five decades, the incredible story of Elton John and Bernie Taupin’s partnership has been told largely by Elton. That’s finally changing on September 12 with the release of Taupin’s memoir Scattershot: Life, Music, Elton, and Me. It’s a non-traditional work that leaps through time, focusing on the duo’s early struggles in the Sixties, the creation of some of their greatest songs, and Taupin’s private life on his California ranch, far from the searing spotlight of fame. “This is the most glorious of books,...

Valentine's Day means different things to different people. For some, it's a joyous celebration of the people in their lives. For others, it's a painful reminder of loves lost and broken hearts. Then, for the rest of us, it's a springboard for silly slashers about lovesick killers. Second only to Christmas, Valentine's Day might well be the most popular holiday in slasher flicks. The innate tension between treacly intimacy and gonzo gore is too good an opportunity to pass up, and for time immemorial, creatives have merged both love and fear in increasingly twisted ways.
Some recent editions to the horror canon, like "Bones and All" and "Spring," while not strictly speaking Valentine's Day-themed, are deeply romantic, reminding audiences of how perfectly the two disparate emotions can coalesce into something amazing. Here, we'll be looking at horror movies specifically about the most romantic day of the year. From old school slashers to creepy,...

News is slow coming out of the holidays, so we figured why not dig something fun out of the archives of legendary drive-in movie critic Joe Bob Briggs? This awesome little blast from the past was shared to the Drive-In Mutant Collective Facebook group by Joe Bob fan John Dirksen, who tried to pass it off as being from a recent issue of Fangoria, but the truth was quickly revealed: it came from a 1984 issue of Hustler. Wherever it came from, it was written by Joe Bob, and that means it’s greatness. It’s Joe Bob’s list of the “all-time top 10 drive-in movie classics”! Here we go… with apologies to fans from the great city of Pittsburgh right up front.
#1. Night of the Living Dead (1968) – The only good thing to ever come out of Pittsburgh, where it was made. This is the Number 1 drive-in movie in the history of the world.

Barbara Lynn Klein, known professionally as Barbi Benton, is a woman that many people might have never heard of for a very simple reason: she didn’t do much in terms of mainstream and her one real claim to fame, aside from a net worth of around $20 million apparently, was that she was in Playboy magazine. Now backing up just a moment that’s nothing to scoff at, especially since she was one of the many women that had the ear of the man that made Playboy the institution that it was, Hugh Hefner. Roy Clark, the popular country music singer-guitarist who co-hosted the long-running sketch/variety series Hee Haw with Buck Owens, died today of pneumonia complications at his home in Tulsa, Ok. He was 85.
CBS launched Hee Haw in summer 1969 as country music’s answer to Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In. Weaving performances by the genre’s top stars with surprise cameos and down-home comedy skits loaded with catchphrases, it lasted three seasons on the network — finishing in the primetime ratings top 20 in each of its first two — before moving to first-run syndication in 1971 — where it aired for 22 more years.
Among the many series regulars over the years were Louis “Grandpa” Jones, Minnie Pearl — she of the $1.98 pricetag hanging from her flowered hat — Barbi Benton, Roy Acuff, Harry Cole and that animated donkey who punctuated the punchlines with the shows titular laugh. Clark’s longtime co-host Owens died in 2006.

Without a doubt, Hugh Hefner was a complex figure.
The late media icon, who founded Playboy in 1953, died on Sept. 27 of cardiac arrest and respiratory failure after contracting septicemia — a blood infection — and drug-resistant e. coli.
Over the course of his 91 years, Hefner lived an exciting and controversial life. On the one hand, he revolutionized the publishing industry, contributed to the sexual revolution that permeated the 1960s and ’70s and fought for birth control and abortion rights — but on the other hand, he was criticized for objectifying women, and even admitted that he considered women to be “sex objects.”

Los Angeles – Hugh Hefner was the man who turned the key to the sexual revolution when he founded Playboy Magazine in 1953. What started in an apartment in Chicago became a worldwide empire as the Playboy brand and image was embedded into American consciousness. Hefner died on Sept. 27, 2017. He was 91.

Hefner – nicknamed Hef – was a straitlaced midwestern boy who turned an obsession with his own sexual frustrations into Playboy Magazine, the first mainstream publication to feature men’s lifestyle articles, high-level literature and the famous “Playboy Interview,” between pictorials and a monthly “centerfold” of nude women (Hefner’s “girl next door” Playmates and Bunnies). He embraced both the success of the magazine and the life it gave him, enjoying (at least as an image) the same swinging style emboldened by the Playboy philosophy of the sexual and sophisticated 20th Century man.

So you’re wading through piles of slasher films from the ‘80s, keen on discovering a lost gem far removed from the normal gang in the woods or high school sis-boom-bah stab and gab. You’re thinking maybe a different setting will yield a fresh take, already tired tropes blurring your vision and making the distinction between a hockey mask and a fencing one harder by the day. Well…have you tried the hospital yet? Most folks are terrified of the antiseptic halls and robotic empathy doled out by uncaring staff. (Yes, yes, they also save lives, I know. I’m trying to set a mood, dammit.) And if you do decide to enter the medical field, I strongly suggest you pay a visit to Hospital Massacre (1981), Israeli King of Schlock Boaz Davidson’s wild attempt at a horror comedy, where some of the humor is even intentional.

[Guest authors Christopher Lombardo and Jeff Kirschner of Really Awful Movies share their diagnosis of healthcare horror movies with Daily Dead readers.] When the Us was overhauling its healthcare system, much to-do was made about so-called “death panels,” government committees who would decide who lives and dies based on asset allocation. As far as healthcare horrors are concerned, it turns out that playing God is very real, but luckily only in film and Sarah Palin’s fright-filled imagination. Nefarious nurses, murderous docs, and psychopathic hallway stalkers in horror movies have effectively put end-of-life issues at the forefront, but not in a way that can be reasonably debated: your life, their ending of it.
We’ve decided to weigh in on the healthcare hullabaloo by looking at fictional settings that make One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest look like the height of patient-centered thinking. So sit back and self-medicate with whatever’s in the fridge (or better still, the medicine cabinet) and take these seven healthcare horrors—but don’t call us in the morning.

In the early 1980s, slashers were coming and going as fast as they were made. When I saw this was going to be a slasher that is based in a hospital setting, my initial reaction was, “Is this going to be a rip off of Halloween II?” Thankfully this movie, despite some faults, was much better than I gave it credit for. Boaz Davison put together a fairly atmospheric hospital slasher that was fairly well paced. In...

In...

Scream Factory is just unstoppable this year, with another batch of summer Blu-ray/DVD titles in the pipe. This August, they're rolling out four more cult & horror titles: a double-feature set of obscure slasher X-Ray with the twisty giallo Schizoid; Larry Cohen's comic monster flick Q: The Winged Serpent; and alien action-thriller Dark Angel. Here's the full breakdown on each: X-Ray (aka Hospital Massacre), starring former Playboy Playmate Barbi Benton, was featured in our Be Kind, Rewind feature series, as it's previously been available only on VHS. It makes its Blu debut as half of a double-feature combo pack with Schizoid, a sleazy giallo-style thriller with legendary movie madman Klaus Kinski (as a therapist, no less!). The DVD presents both features in anamorphic widescreen (1.78:1) and Dolby Digital Stereo, and the Blu-ray in 1080p high-definition widescreen and DTS-hd master audio stereo. Bonus features on this set include an interview with Schizoid actress Donna Wilkes,...

Scream Factory has just revealed the artwork for their upcoming double-feature release of X-Ray and Schizoid.
The set is due in August, and as we get closer I am sure we will get all the deets on the special features. Scream Factory always rocks the special features.
From the Scream Factory Facebook Page: "1980's Schizoid (starring Klaus Kinski, Donna Wilkes, Christopher Lloyd and lots of scissor stabbings) is paired with 1982's X-ray (also known as Hospital Massacre and stars Barbi Benton). If you're a fan of the mad killer sub-genre from this time period, you will definitely need this double bill for sure.
"X-ray Fans Take Note: Our presentation of X-ray is the full 89 min version - which is what Hospital Massacre was released on VHS in the 80s - and not the cut version that has, apparently, existed on overseas VHS copies or some cable airings. We did our homework on this one.

At the rate Scream Factory keeps announcing new titles they’re going to singlehandedly make 2013 a very expensive year for horror fans. With Halloween days way they decided to announce three new titles: X-Ray, Schizoid, and The Godsend.
None of the three latest Scream Factory titles announced Friday have ever been released on DVD before. According to Scream Factory’s Facebook posting announcing the trio of Cannon Film horror titles that could be the only format they’re released in since they haven’t even looked at the masters yet to determine if Blu-ray releases are even feasible. Whatever format they get released in don’t expect them until well into 2013.

Shout! Factory has been announcing new movies for their Scream Factory line every week and just revealed the titles of three more cult horror movies that they will release next year:
“Cannon films X-ray (1981 – aka: Hospital Massacre with Barbi Benton), Schizoid (1980 – starring Klaus Kinski) and The Godsend (1980 – starring Donald Pleasence’s daughter, Angela) are on tap for a release late in 2013! All three have never been out on DVD before.
As mentioned yesterday, these films will not show up on our schedule until later in 2013 so we cannot confirm they will be on Blu-ray as we have not seen the masters yet. We say this only to manage expectations. More details on these fun flicks will be presented next year.”
For those who want to keep track, here’s the current list of Scream Factory titles that have been released and/or announced: Halloween II, Halloween III: Season of the Witch,...

First "The Playboy Club" announced the obvious promotion of planting one of the show's stars, actress Laura Benanti, on the cover Playboy's October edition. Now, in keeping with the lessons from Crossover 101, it appears a Playmate may soon appear on the NBC show.
Claire Sinclair, Playboy's 2011 Playmate of the Year, took to her Twitter page to announce she read for a role in upcoming series.
"Just auditioned for the NBC Playboy Club show," she writes. "I would love to be part of it!!"
This would be Sinclair's first venture into scripted programming, however she has made frequent appearances on the E! program "Holly's World" starring former Playmate/Hef girlfriend Holly Madison.
The 20-year old Sinclair retro style should be a good match for the period drama that takes place in 1960s Chicago. Her look has often been compared to pinup icon Bettie Page and even Hugh Hefner's ex-girlfriend and former Playmate Barbi Benton.

Oakland — Just in time for the holiday season, the Gravy has arrived.
Saint Misbehavin’: The Wavy Gravy Movie opens up in various theaters across America at the start of December. Wavy Gravy is an icon with an ever changing career. He’s gone from the legendary Merry Pranksters to the head of security at the original Woodstock to running a respected charity and finally achieving international greatness as a flavor of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. The many facets of his life are covered in the documentary directed by Michelle Esrick.
We had a chance to sit down for an extensive interview with Wavy Gravy and Michelle Esrick when the movie premiered at 2009’s Full Frame Documentary Film Festival.
This first part has him discuss getting drunk with Jack Kerouac (On the Road) and dropping acid at the Electric Acid Kool-Aid Tests. Ahhh good times.

Want a piece of Hugh Hefner and Playboy? It's gonna cost ya. Tonight at the Taschen store in Beverly Hills, Hef's celebrating the release of the gorgeous, six-volume Hugh Hefner's Playboy anthology collection, priced at $1,300. He's in the house with current squeezes Crystal Harris and twins Karissa and Kristina Shannon, along with former gal-pal Barbi Benton and her husband. And far from the party at an Indianapolis hospital, Hef's former girlfriend Kendra Wilkinson and her hubby Hank Baskett welcome a baby boy. "I think she's going to be a very, very good mom," Hef tells me before the happy news breaks. "She's always had great character and...

It’s hard to surprise people when putting together a list of the best slasher movies and, in the interest of doing so, I thought I’d exclude all the genre mainstays from the list. This list doesn’t necessarily represent the “ten best”, but rather some of the slasher subgenre’s more ‘overlooked’ offerings.
10. The Mutilator (1985)
It can be argued that this film’s greatest asset is its amazing tag line (By Pick, By Sword, By Axe, Bye Bye!), but that’s doing a bit of disservice to director Buddy Cooper’s only attempt to run with the slasher big dogs.
First we’ve got one of the most preposterous killer motivations in the subgenre: a child, cleaning his father’s gun in an attempt to gleam his daddy’s affections, accidentally shoots his mother dead. Dad comes home, flips his lid and viola! Instant slasher!
If you track down the uncut version,...

Eartha Kitt, who used her seductive purr and sultry style to charm audiences as an actress, singer and cabaret star, died Thursday of colon cancer. She was 81.
The cancer was detected about two years ago and treated, but it recurred after a period of remission. Kitt recently had been treated at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York.
"She came back strongly; she had been performing until two months ago," said Andrew Freedman, a longtime friend and publicist. "We had dates booked through 2009."
Among Kitt's hits was the Christmas tune "Santa Baby," lending poignancy to her Christmas Day death. The song went gold this year, and she received the gold record before she died, Freedman said.
Slinky and catlike, Kitt described herself as a "sex kitten": She followed Julie Newmar in the role of Catwoman on the TV series "Batman" during the 1960s.
But the seductress also could be a political provocateur.
