Fans of 28 Days Later are eating well after the announcement that Danny Boyle and Alex Garland are reuniting to work on a continuation of their popular zombie film. We’ve been keeping track of what’s happening with the new movie in our 28 Years Later: Everything We Know article. The biggest revelation so far is the news that the upcoming sequel will actually be a trilogy of films. Both Garland and Boyle confirmed their collaboration. Garland said, “A few years ago an idea materialized in my head for what would be really 28 Years Later. Danny always liked the idea.“ Boyle added, “So we’re talking about it quite seriously, quite diligently. If he doesn’t want to direct it himself I’ll be well up for it if we can execute a similarly good idea.“
Deadline is now reporting that Jack O’Connell will be joining the cast of the trilogy.

Exclusive: After landing the villain role in Ryan Coogler’s next project, Jack O’Connell continues to fill out his dance card. Sources tell Deadline that he is set to join the cast of 28 Years Later, a sequel to 2002’s 28 Days Later. Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes also star in the pic, which is part of a planned trilogy.
Danny Boyle is directing the first movie from a script by Alex Garland. Sony will release the film in theaters globally.
While plot details are vague, the original 28 Days Later, directed by Boyle, written by Garland and released in 2002, centered on a bicycle courier (played by Cillian Murphy) who wakes from a coma to discover the world had been overrun with zombies following the outbreak of a virus. The pic grossed more than $82 million worldwide and led to the 2007 sequel 28 Weeks Later, on which Boyle and Garland served solely as EPs.

Luca Guadagnino isn’t exactly known for mainstream box office success, with credits on his resume like Call Me By Your Name, Suspiria and Bones and All. However, you take a young rising star like Zendaya and create a sexy love triangle around her in a sports setting, then as the late great Carl Weathers would say, “Baby, you got a stew going!” Guadagnino’s sports romance drama, Challengers, would open to $1.9 million at the box office in Thursday night previews.
According to Variety, while the R-rated film isn’t going to bust any blocks, as romance dramas rarely do, but the Amazon MGM movie is expected to win the weekend with an estimated $12 million to $15 million gross. Civil War filmmaker Alex Garland, who penned the script, is back to write what is intended to be a trilogy of films for Sony. The original feature helped revive the zombie genre and already had a sequel, 2007’s 28 Weeks Later, which only nominally involved Boyle and Garland as executive producers.

Amazon MGM Studios’ latest featurette for Challengers features the film’s stars – Zendaya (Dune Parts 1 and 2), Mike Faist (West Side Story), and Josh O’Connor (The Crown) – discussing the R-rated drama. Zendaya, the center of a love triangle in the mesmerizing sports drama, says the film’s a rollercoaster of emotions that challenges the audience.
Oscar nominated director Luca Guadagnino describes the film as a “passionate love story where the rules of the game of tennis become the rules of the game of seduction.” And Zendaya considers tennis to be just the outlet for the characters to express their chaos.

Exclusive: While Danny Boyle is set to return to direct 28 Years Later, the first film in a new trilogy based on the iconic horror films he helped launch, Sony Pictures is already lining up the helmer for the second installment. While a deal hasn’t closed, sources tell Deadline that Nia DaCosta is in talks to direct, with Boyle, original writer Alex Garland, Andrew Macdonald and Peter Rice producing along with Bernie Bellew. 28 Days Later star Cillian Murphy will exec produce.
While exact dates are unknown, sources say the plan is for Boyle to direct the first film later this year, with the second film shooting immediately after, which is why Sony is moving fast to lock in that second director. This way, the directors can get on the same page about where they see the story going while also bringing their own unique visions for each film. Garland will pen each installment.

As Zendaya walks the red carpet at Dune Part 2 with an outfit that resembles the Metropolis robot as a dominatrix, you can catch her in the trailer for the newest drama from Amazon MGM Studios, Challengers. The trailer reels you in with the dynamic of Zendaya’s tennis pro taking on two male protégés as they, too, embark on their professional tennis careers. Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers,” starring Zendaya, which had been set as the Venice Film Festival opener, has been pulled from the festival due to promotional complications prompted by the SAG-AFTRA strike.
Venice has announced that the sexy sports comedy — in which Zendaya plays a former tennis prodigy turned coach entangled in a love triangle with two pro tennis players, played by Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist — has changed its distribution strategy. The film’s promotion has been disrupted by the current actors strike, which prohibits SAG-AFTRA union members from doing any type of promotional activity.
This means Zendaya, O’Connor and Faist would not have been able to launch the film on Aug. 30 on the Venice red carpet.
After a week of discussions, Venice organizers confirmed in a statement on Friday that the film “will not participate at the festival following a decision made by the production.”

Two-time Emmy Award winner Zendaya (Euphoria) plays a tennis star who, after an injury, transitions to coaching in Challengers which just unveiled an official trailer. With tennis as a backdrop, the drama finds Zendaya at the center of a love triangle involving two best friends.
Mike Faist (West Side Story) and Josh O’Connor (The Crown) star as the friends who vie for Zendaya’s character’s attention. The R-rated drama was directed by Oscar nominee Luca Guadagnino from a screenplay by Justin Kuritzkes.
Director Guadagnino told Variety that his leads trained for three months prior to the shoot. Complimenting Zendaya’s skills in particular, Guadagnino said, “I mean, wow. We edited the movie and we almost actually don’t use any of her double. She’s so good.”
MGM is releasing Challengers in theaters on September 15, 2023.
Amy Pascal, Luca Guadagnino, Zendaya, and Rachel O’Connor served as producers, with Bernard Bellew executive producing.

Zendaya is down at the tennis courts in Luca Guadagnino’s latest romance. In the film, the “Euphoria” Emmy winner plays tennis player-turned-coach Tashi who oversees her husband Art’s (Mike Faist) career. But when Art winds up on a losing streak, he is forced to play against his childhood best friend and Tashi’s ex-boyfriend (Josh O’Connor), igniting a tense love triangle with queer undertones. The film is written by Justin Kuritzkes.
Director Guadagnino revealed that the cast trained for three months with former professional tennis player Brad Gilbert, who served as a consultant on the film. The “Bones and All” filmmaker added that Zendaya’s body double was not used in the final cut of the tennis scenes.
“I think those three characters in that movie are beautifully complex and really fucked-up people that I love very much. And a sports film, why not?,” the Oscar winner previously told IndieWire.

Tashi convinces Art to enter the Challengers tennis tournament, but once Art learns he’ll be playing against Patrick, drama — and major competition — ensues.
