"The Witcher" Casting-Call

by phoenixire | created - 15 Apr 2016 | updated - 16 Apr 2016 | Public

With the success of the "Game of Thrones" TV show, and the "Witcher" video games, it's only a matter of time before Hollywood gives the big-American-production treatment to Andrzej Sapkowski's "Witcher" novels and short-stories. I've read all of the "Witcher" books that have been translated into English, and being a huge movie-buff I can hardly wait to see what Hollywood could do with a $200 million production budget, a great director (like Christopher Nolan maybe?), an excellent screenplay (could they tap Joss Whedon?), and a stellar cast of actors and actresses.

One of the reasons a "Witcher" movie franchise would appeal to larger audiences is the fact that there are a handful of equally "strong" male and female characters in the story/series. In truth -- and those who've only played the games won't know this -- after the short-story collections about the "Witcher", the true protagonist of the story is Ciri (Cirilla), a young woman possessed of nearly infinite power that everyone wants to use and which she is unable to control.

The "saga" of the "Witcher" has a huge cast of characters -- far too many to try to list here. I will focus my list on the handful of characters that are most-integral to the story: Geralt, Yennefer, Triss, Ciri, and Dandelion. I hate to leave out my personal favorites -- Yarpen Zigrin and Zoltan Chivay -- but being that they are true "fantasy" dwarves, the movie producers will have determine how they are going to be portrayed via special-effects, long before they decide whom they will cast.

Finally, before I get to my dream casting line-up, I want to point out two things: 1) This list is a "sky-is-the-limit" list, with no regard for budget to retain said actors/actresses; and 2) The director/writer(s)/casting-crew would have to agree on a general "age-group" for the characters, which would likely be based solely upon the true age of the actor that plays Geralt. Whereas Triss and Yennefer could be actresses of any age (because they hide their true age with magic), Geralt's age-relationship to them and to Ciri (and to a degree, Dandelion) would have to take into account a certain spectrum that would seem appropriate/appealing to audiences.

1. Sean Bean

Actor | The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

Sean Bean's career since the eighties spans theatre, radio, television and movies. Bean was born in Handsworth, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, to Rita (Tuckwood) and Brian Bean. He worked for his father's welding firm before he decided to become an actor. He attended RADA in London and appeared in a ...

AS: GERALT OF RIVIA

57 years (as of 2016), and 5' 10.5"

Were we able to freeze time, Sean Bean would be my #1 pick to play Geralt. There's no one -- NO ONE -- who looks more like Geralt of Rivia. He's rather tall, very fit and powerful, with chiseled features and just enough "weathering" to his face. In particular, when Sean Bean smiles, it looks like he's in pain -- just as one would imagine of Geralt. More importantly, Sean Bean is a WONDERFUL actor. (I think he has been terribly underrated throughout his career.) His role of Eddard Stark on "Game of Thrones" really gave Sean Bean an opportunity to shine. As Geralt, Sean Bean could portray the strength, wit, wisdom, and surliness that embody Geralt's spirit. Moreover, he could deliver a humorous line with just the right "dry" humor when the script called for comedy.

My only reservation in casting Sean Bean would be his age. Were a studio to undertake a film project regarding the "Witcher", they'd have to do so with the idea of a franchise that would span the next decade or so.

2. Nathan Fillion

Actor | Castle

Nathan Fillion was born on 27 March 1971 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He is the son of Cookie (Early) and Bob Fillion, both retired English teachers, and has an older brother, Jeff. His father is of French-Canadian descent, and his mother is of English, German, Finnish, and Norwegian ancestry. In ...

AS: GERALT OF RIVIA

45 years (as of 2016), and 6' 1.5"

Despite his success in TV, Nathan Fillion's not had much in the way of marquis movie-roles. Still, his role as "Captain Malcolm Reynolds" in "Firefly" showcases all his capabilities to portray Geralt of Rivia to a "T". He can do action; he can swing a sword; he can do comedy; and he can do drama. There's no actor who can better-portray a "broken" man than Nathan Fillion. Despite playing characters who are usually genial, one need only watch the episodes "Ariel" and "War Stories" (from "Firefly") to see that Nathan Fillion can be truly terrifying and dangerously vengeful.

Second only to Sean Bean, Nathan Fillion probably most-resembles the physical appearance of Geralt, and at 45 he's just the right age to start a franchise and stay with it through completion.

3. Adrien Brody

Actor | The Pianist

Adrien Nicholas Brody was born in Woodhaven, Queens, New York, the only child of retired history professor Elliot Brody and Hungarian-born photographer Sylvia Plachy. He accompanied his mother on assignments for the Village Voice, and credits her with making him feel comfortable in front of the ...

AS: GERALT OF RIVIA

43 years (as of 2016), and 6' 1"

The character of Geralt needs to be quiet, pensive, and world-weary. Geralt's also an unusual specimen of a man (transformed by chemistry and magic), and so, ENTER Adrien Brody. An amazing dramatic actor, Adrien Brody could bring brooding humanity to the character of Geralt with his trademark looks of sadness and longing, and with his piercing eyes.

Adrien Brody swung a sword with convincing aptitude as "Tiberius" in "Dragon Blade", and it would be refreshing to see such a slim actor taking the lead role as the "muscle" of a movie. If you can't view Adrien Brody as a "tough-guy", then you need to watch him as "Royce" in the movie "Predators". (He put on 25 pounds of muscle for the role.)

4. Christian Bale

Actor | The Dark Knight

Christian Charles Philip Bale was born in Pembrokeshire, Wales, UK on January 30, 1974, to English parents Jennifer "Jenny" (James) and David Bale. His mother was a circus performer and his father, who was born in South Africa, was a commercial pilot. The family lived in different countries ...

AS: GERALT OF RIVIA

42 years (as of 2016), and 6' 0"

Perfectionistic, talented, tall, slim, strong, and dedicated, Christian Bale would be a sure-fire choice to portray Geralt of Rivia (or any character who embodies both strength and eccentricity). I have nothing but respect for Christian Bale in all of his roles -- he appears to be the most dedicated actor of his generation.

Playing Geralt wouldn't be a far cry from portraying "Bruce Wayne" or "Batman"... The characters are very similar, and my reservations in casting Christian Bale as Geralt would be two-fold: 1) Would audiences be able to see him in a new franchise without thinking of him as Batman? 2) Would he be able to share the silver-screen with other top-notch actors without stifling their performances?

5. Tom Hardy

Actor | Inception

With his breakthrough performance as Eames in Christopher Nolan's sci-fi thriller Inception (2010), English actor Tom Hardy has been brought to the attention of mainstream audiences worldwide. However, the versatile actor has been steadily working on both stage and screen since his television debut...

AS: GERALT OF RIVIA

39 years (as of 2016), and 5' 9"

Though he "looks" the least like Geralt, I believe that Tom Hardy is the most-talented actor of those I propose could play Geralt. In truth, Tom Hardy is my favorite actor of his generation, and would likely be my #1 pick to play Geralt. He can play ANY role, and he can flawlessly execute ANY voice/accent. He's tough, he's gruff, he's physical, and he excels as a man who says little and accomplishes much.

Being the youngest on this list (to play Geralt), Tom Hardy would have the longevity in his career to stay active with a movie-franchise.

Moreover, one need only watch "Warrior" to see that Tom Hardy can really cut-up his body; and one need only watch "The Dark Knight Rises" to see that Tom Hardy can be made to look tall(er).

6. Rachel Weisz

Actress | The Constant Gardener

Rachel Hannah Weisz was born on 7 March, 1970, in London, U.K., to Edith Ruth (Teich), a psychoanalyst, and George Weisz, an inventor. Her parents both came to England around 1938. Her father is a Hungarian Jewish immigrant, and her mother, from Vienna, was of Italian and Austrian Jewish heritage. ...

AS: YENNEFER OF VENGERBERG

46 years (as of 2016), and 5' 6"

In consideration for playing Yennefer of Vengerberg, one need only witness Rachel Weisz's performance as "Evanora" (a witch) in "Oz the Great and Powrful". In many films, Rachel Weisz has portrayed a softer/kinder leading-lady, who is forced to become stronger/harder through her circumstances. I loved her work in the "Mummy" films, along with her dual roles in "Constantine" and "The Whistleblower".

Rachel Weisz has always been stunning to behold. She would be a good fit as Yennefer were the production team / director to go with a slightly "older" cast. My only reservation in casting Rachel Weisz as Yennefer is the fact that she seems so genuinely sweet and kind and gentle. I've never her seen her in a role as someone who is condescending or scathing. I don't know if it would be a good fit for her to play someone who "toys" with her love-interests, and/or views herself as being vastly superior to pretty-much everyone. Still, I am very confident in Rachel Weisz's acting ability, and I'm sure she could bring a "softness" to Yen's character that would make it much easier for audiences to stomach Yen's eccentricities.

7. Winona Ryder

Actress | Little Women

Winona Ryder was born Winona Laura Horowitz in Olmsted County, Minnesota, and was named after a nearby town, Winona, Minnesota. She is the daughter of Cynthia (Istas), an author and video producer, and Michael Horowitz, a publisher and bookseller. Her father's family is Ukrainian Jewish and ...

AS: YENNEFER OF VENGERBERG

45 years (as of 2016), and 5' 3.5"

One of the most beloved and sought-after actresses of her generation, Winona Ryder would have no problem fulfilling the role of Yennefer to perfection. A *superior* spit-fire, with many *diva-like* qualities, Yennefer is a character that would be a natural fit for Winona Ryder. Her turns as "Nicola Anders" in "S1m0ne" and as "Beth Macintyre" in "Black Swan" give credence to her ability to play this leading lady.

Let's face it -- Winona Ryder has the look to play Yen, and she's one of the most-desired actresses of "nerds" and "fanboys" everywhere. A sword-and-sorcery movie role would be a perfect fit for her, and it may be another step towards re-solidifying her career in Hollywood. Just as the sorceresses in the world of the Witcher, Winona Ryder doesn't seem to age (or, at least, she has aged very well). My only reservation in casting Winona Ryder would be based on the rest of the (main) cast, and how well she would gel (read: "get along") with the rest of the cast/crew.

8. Kate Beckinsale

Actress | Underworld: Evolution

Kate Beckinsale was born on 26 July 1973 in Hounslow, Middlesex, England, and has resided in London for most of her life. Her mother is Judy Loe, who has appeared in a number of British dramas and sitcoms and continues to work as an actress, predominantly in British television productions. Her ...

AS: YENNEFER OF VENGERBERG

43 years (as of 2016), and 5' 7"

After playing "Selene" in the "Underworld" franchise, it's easy to see Kate Beckinsale slipping into the role of a (very) powerful sorceress in a new movie franchise. I've always appreciated how Kate Beckinsale carries herself with a certain amount of regality, and I think that would be an important characteristic to portray in the role of Yennefer. Perhaps even more importantly, Kate Beckinsale has shown her softer, more gentle and affectionate side in roles such as "Amy" from "Everybody's Fine" and "Eliza Graves" from "Stonehearst Asylum"; it's easy to see how she could capture and ensnare a Witcher's heart.

Yennefer's costuming would not be a far cry from the get-up that Kate Beckinsale wore in the "Underworld" movies, and she would look amazing with long, curly hair, and black-and-white colors that Yen favors. In additional, Kate Beckinsale's role as "Lori Quaid" in "Total Recall" also stands as evidence that she can convincingly turn into a tough/cruel "bi#ch" in an instant, which would also be an important element of Yennefer's character.

9. Angelina Jolie

Actress | Maleficent

Angelina Jolie is an Academy Award-winning actress who rose to fame after her role in Girl, Interrupted (1999), playing the title role in the "Lara Croft" blockbuster movies, as well as Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005), Wanted (2008), Salt (2010) and Maleficent (2014). Off-screen, Jolie has become ...

AS: YENNEFER OF VENGERBERG

41 years (as of 2016), and 5' 6.5"

The character of Yennefer is not a far cry from the character of "Maleficent", whom Angelina Jolie played as no one else could. Angelina Jolie has a knack for portraying characters who have been harmed, and in turn, seek to cause (righteous) harm. In addition to her role(s) as "Maleficent", Angelina Jolie has performed with a beauteous and scathing calm as "Evelyn Salt" in "Salt"; as "Grendel's Mother" in "Beowulf"; and as "Fox" in "Wanted".

Angelina Jolie resembles Yennefer of Vengerberg very little, but I'm sure that with the right costuming and make-up she would easily depict Yen's stunning (and yet cold) elegance. My only reservation in casting Angelina Jolie as Yen would deal with contractual issues -- I don't know if she'd be willing to perform the "R"-rated lustiness that is a pervasive element of the Witcher stories.

10. Eva Green

Actress | Casino Royale

French actress and model Eva Gaëlle Green was born on July 6, 1980, in Paris, France. Her father, Walter Green, is a dentist who appeared in the 1966 film Au hasard Balthazar (1966). Her mother, Marlène Jobert, is an actress turned children's book writer. Eva's mother was born in Algeria, of French...

AS: YENNEFER OF VENGERBERG

36 years (as of 2016), and 5' 6"

Eva Green is my #1 pick to play Yennefer of Vengerberg -- there's no one who could do better. Eva Green is an incredible dramatic actress (see "Penny Dreadful). Her two roles -- as "Ava" in "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For" and "Artemisia" in "300: Rise of an Empire" -- are basically a summation of the character of Yennefer.

Eva Green is devastatingly gorgeous, and has the unique talent to appear both vulnerable and strong at the same time. Furthermore, her natural appearance strongly resembles that of Yennefer, and it's easy to imagine her in Yen's black-and-white Victorian ensemble with luxurious, curly black hair.

11. Jessica Chastain

Actress | Zero Dark Thirty

Jessica Michelle Chastain was born in Sacramento, California, and was raised in a middle-class household in a Northern California suburb. Her mother, Jerri Chastain, is a vegan chef whose family is originally from Kansas, and her stepfather is a fireman. She discovered dance at the age of nine and ...

AS: TRISS MERIGOLD

39 years (as of 2016), and 5' 4"

Anyone -- and everyone -- could fall in love with Jessica Chastain, and that's why she would be perfect as Triss Merigold. Her best supporting-role was as "Maggie Beauford" in "Lawless" -- she was equal parts beautiful, sweet, kind, mysterious, and vengeful. Jessica Chastain could gracefully depict Triss as the genteel "big-sister" to Ciri, while also portraying Geralt's pining love-interest -- one who suffers from unrequited love and the jealousy of Yen.

Of all the red-headed actresses in Hollywood, Jessica Chastain is by far the most comely, and it's easy to imagine her in a revealing "Renaissance-style" dress, complete with an arsenal of fiery magic.

12. Jessica Biel

Actress | The Illusionist

Jessica Biel, has become one of Hollywood's most sought-out actresses. She was born in Ely, Minnesota, to Kimberly (Conroe) and Jonathan Edward Biel, who is a business consultant and GM worker. Biel was raised in Boulder, Colorado. She is of Hungarian Jewish, Danish, English, and German descent.

As ...

AS: TRISS MERIGOLD

34 years (as of 2016), and 5' 7"

Jessica Biel's role as "Charissa Sosa" in "The A-Team" showcased her ability to embody both strength and fragility. Furthermore, in her role as "Melina" in "Total Recall", she did a fantastic job of playing a woman competing against another woman while maintaining the sympathy of the audience.

Jessica Biel is my #1 pick to play Triss Merigold. She's got just the right mix of badass-chick and gentle-vixen. She'd look great with flaming-red hair, and she'd be a wonder to behold tossing fireballs with a vengeance.

13. Emily Blunt

Actress | Edge of Tomorrow

Emily Olivia Leah Blunt is a British actress known for her roles in The Devil Wears Prada (2006), The Young Victoria (2009), Edge of Tomorrow (2014), and The Girl on the Train (2016), among many others.

Blunt was born on February 23, 1983, in Roehampton, South West London, England, the second of ...

AS: TRISS MERIGOLD

33 years (as of 2016), and 5' 7"

To play Triss Merigold, an actress would have to be vulnerable, sexy, and tough -- all at the same time. In addition, she'd have to break audience's hearts by having her love un-returned by the leading man (in this case, Geralt). Emily Blunt could certainly fulfill the role as Triss: she was tough as "Rita" in "Edge of Tomorrow"; she was devilishly sexy as "Tamsin" in "My Summer of Love"; she was vulnerable as "Kate Macer" in "Sicario"; and, as an added benefit, she was quite humorous (though she was supposed to be a "bi#ch") as "Emily" in "The Devil Wears Prada".

Emily Blunt's amazing eyes and generous smile could be quite convincing as Triss. My only reservation regarding casting her in this role would be that she doesn't portray the general voluptuousness that is inferred in Triss's character. Still, she could likely get by just as well using her personality and sex-appeal to antagonize the character of Yen, and to make audiences wonder WHY Geralt doesn't fall head-over-heels for Triss.

14. Amanda Seyfried

Actress | Les Misérables

Amanda Seyfried was born and raised in Allentown, Pennsylvania, to Ann (Sander), an occupational therapist, and Jack Seyfried, a pharmacist. She is of German, and some English and Scottish, ancestry. She began modeling when she was eleven, and acted in high school productions as well as taking ...

AS: TRISS MERIGOLD

31 years (as of 2016), and 5' 2.5"

Despite being a powerful sorceress of unknown (many) years of wisdom and life, Triss Merigold has a certain innocence and naivete that are important qualities to her character. Amanda Seyfried had similar roles; as "Needy" in "Jennifer's Body" and as "Valerie" in "Red Riding Hood". In addition, Triss Merigold embodies an undeniable sexiness, and Amanda Seyfried was truly undeniable in "Chloe".

Amanda Seyfried has it all: she's sweet; she's sexy; she's kind; she's tough; she's gorgeous; she's got amazing eyes; she's got beautiful hair; she's slim and curvy all at the same time. Men want Amanda Seyfried, and women want to be (or, at least be friends with) Amanda Seyfried. Thus, she'd be the perfect cast for Triss Merigold, if she can complete the love-triangle that is created with the other cast members who play Geralt and Yen.

15. Gemma Arterton

Actress | Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Gemma Christina Arterton was born in Gravesend, Kent, England, where she was raised. She is the daughter of Sally-Anne (Heap), a cleaner, and Barry J. Arterton, a welder. Her mother's cousin is singer-songwriter Eric Goulden.

Her parents divorced when she was age five, and Gemma subsequently lived ...

AS: TRISS MERIGOLD

30 years (as of 2016), and 5' 7"

When I think of Triss Merigold, I think of how she is sweet and kind and gentle and earthy and voluptuous. Gemma Arterton would be able to handle with grace the good-natured (but sad) character of Triss. It's easy to imagine Gemma Arterton playing second-fiddle to the character of Yennefer, and at the same time maintaining the hopeful, good-natured, and sometimes fiery demeanor that the character Triss embodies.

Gemma Arterton has played many lovely characters, but I was most impressed with her role as "Clara" in "Byzantium". That character -- much like Triss Merigold -- was many years more experienced than her looks portrayed, and at the same time consumed with the necessities of survival and the devotion of nurturing.

16. Johnny Depp

Actor | Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

John Christopher "Johnny" Depp II was born on June 9, 1963 in Owensboro, Kentucky, to Betty Sue Palmer (née Wells), a waitress, and John Christopher Depp, a civil engineer. He was raised in Florida. He dropped out of school when he was 15, and fronted a series of music-garage bands, including one ...

AS: DANDELION

53 years (as of 2016), and 5' 10"

The character of Dandelion is supposed to be bawdy, comical, obnoxious and helpless -- and yet, he's supposed to still "woo" all the women and find himself "rolling" in wenches, tavern-girls, and princesses alike. Who better, then, than Johnny Depp? If money were no object, I'd cast him in a heartbeat to play Dandelion -- if for nothing more than the fact that blockbuster sales would double as women flocked to see his latest movie!

Johnny Depp is taller than most people realize, and he's very slim/agile. He's an accomplished musician and singer too. Most importantly, in the role of Dandelion he could add a great counterpoint to Geralt's surliness. Basically, all he'd have to do is channel some "Captain Jack Sparrow", but with clean (silk?) clothes and a long feather in his cap.

17. Orlando Bloom

Actor | The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

Orlando Jonathan Blanchard Copeland Bloom was born on January 13, 1977 in Canterbury, Kent, England. His mother, Sonia Constance Josephine Bloom (née Copeland), was born in Kolkata, India, to an English family then-resident there. The man he first knew as his father, Harry Bloom, was a legendary ...

18. James Franco

Actor | Spring Breakers

Known for his breakthrough starring role on Freaks and Geeks (1999), James Franco was born April 19, 1978 in Palo Alto, California, to Betsy Franco, a writer, artist, and actress, and Douglas Eugene "Doug" Franco, who ran a Silicon Valley business. His mother is Jewish and his father was of ...

19. Jake Gyllenhaal

Actor | Nightcrawler

Jake Gyllenhaal was born on December 19, 1980 in Los Angeles, California as Jacob Benjamin Gyllenhaal, the son of producer/screenwriter Naomi Foner and director Stephen Gyllenhaal, and the younger brother of actress Maggie Gyllenhaal. He is of Ashkenazi Jewish (mother) and Swedish, English, and ...

Actor | Inception

Joseph Leonard Gordon-Levitt was born February 17, 1981 in Los Angeles, California, to Jane Gordon and Dennis Levitt. Joseph was raised in a Jewish family with his late older brother, Dan Gordon-Levitt, who passed away in October 2010. His parents worked for the Pacifica Radio station KPFK-FM and ...

21. Anne Hathaway

Actress | Les Misérables

Anne Jacqueline Hathaway was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Kate McCauley Hathaway, an actress, and Gerald T. Hathaway, a lawyer, both originally from Philadelphia. She is of mostly Irish descent, along with English, German, and French. Her first major role came in the short-lived television series ...

AS: CIRILLA (CIRI) FIONA ELEN RIANNON

34 years (as of 2016), and 5' 8"

Anne Hathaway possesses some unique qualities that would give her an edge if she were to play Ciri. I was pleasantly amazed by her lithe performance as the disconnected and generally uncaring "Selina" in "The Dark Knight Rises". Furthermore, when I saw her as "Maggie Murdock" in "Love & Other Drugs", I realized that "little" Anne Hathaway had truly grown up and come into her own as a talented and evocative actress. She could easily handle the fiery/explosive nature of Ciri. She could also portray the head-strong nature of a young woman who is struggling to exert her independence and at the same time determine why she is so lonely. In addition, more than any of the other actresses I've suggested, I think Anne Hathaway could convincingly (and tastefully) pull off Ciri's tendency to passionately love other women.

Casting Anne Hathaway as Ciri would hinge on placing her amongst a cast of an "older" age-group. There would need to be some readily recognizable age-differences between Ciri, Triss, Yen, and (esp.) Geralt -- who would assume the role of her "foster father". That being said, Anne Hathaway looks 10 years younger than her real age anyway, so it wouldn't be much of a stretch to portray her as a much younger woman.

22. Mia Wasikowska

Actress | Alice in Wonderland

Mia is an Australian actress, born and raised in the country's capital, Canberra. She is the daughter of photographers Marzena Wasikowska and John Reid. Her mother is Polish and her father is an Australian of British ancestry. She has an older sister, Jess, and a younger brother, Kai. At age eight,...

Smith; the Mattson Tomlin-directed sci-fi thriller Mother/Android; Neil Jordan's thriller Greta; Roseanne Liang's Shadow in the Cloud, which claimed the Midnight Madness People's Choice Award at the ...

AS: CIRILLA (CIRI) FIONA ELEN RIANNON

19 years (as of 2016), and 5' 4"

Chloe Grace Moretz is without a doubt, my favorite actress of her (youthful) generation. Despite her young age, she seems to be able to do it all: she can do action, she can do comedy, she can do drama, she can laugh and cry and scream and open a can of whup-ass. She's my #1 pick to play Ciri, the adopted "daughter" of Geralt (and apprentice to Triss and Yennefer). Most importantly, the role of Ciri is one that contains an explosive power, and I think Chloe Grace Moretz -- more than anyone else -- has the capacity to portray a very young, very lost and rebellious woman, possessed of great power and longing. When I saw her play "Teri" in "The Equalizer", I knew she could handle the dual nature of Ciri: being both youthful, and wise beyond her years.

My only reservation regarding Chloe Grace Moretz as Ciri would be her physical depiction of the character. Ciri is supposed to be tall and slender; a wisp-like girl who (literally) dances through a sword-fight before vengefully stabbing her enemies with cruel precision. Still, I think Chloe Grace Moretz's capacity to adapt would see her fulfill the role quite well.

25. Elle Fanning
