French sales banner Charades has boarded “The Keeper of the Camphor Tree,” an upcoming animated feature from Japanese entertainment company Aniplex and director Tomohiko Ito.
The film is an adaptation of Keigo Higashino’s novel “Kususoki no Bannin” that sold more than 1 million copies. Higashino’s other works have been adapted for film and TV several times, but this marks the first time one is getting an animated retelling.
Set in Tokyo, “The Keeper of the Camphor Tree” follows a young man named Reito who, having been left on his own after the loss of his mother and following a series of bad decisions and misfortune, lands in prison. Left with nothing, he has lost all hope for the future. But everything changes when a lawyer representing a powerful family empire offers him a way out — on one condition: he must take on a mysterious role as the Keeper of the Camphor Tree.

The Current Debate connects the dots around a topic of the critical conversation.Anora.Remember Cord Jefferson’s plea at last year’s Oscars? Picking up his Best Adapted Screenplay award for American Fiction (2023), the director chided the industry for being “risk-averse,” and suggested that, “instead of making one $200 million movie,” producers should spread those resources to make room for more diverse and bolder voices. “Try making twenty $10 million movies,” he said, “or fifty $4 million movies.” Jefferson was of course alluding to Oppenheimer (2023), Christopher Nolan’s thunderous portrait of “father of the atomic bomb” J. Robert Oppenheimer, a $100-million Best Picture winner that racked up seven statuettes and nearly a billion dollars at the box office. A year later, a cursory glance at the list of 2025 Oscar winners might make you think the industry did, in fact, heed the call. It’s not that there were no big-budget films among...

Cannes is continuing in its usual spot in late May, running from May 13th to 24th, kicking things off with the highly anticipated Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning sequel with Tom Cruise returning (he was also at the festival in 2022 for Top Gun: Maverick). Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president Janet Yang said the media and entertainment community needs to preserve “human authorship” as AI use evolves in Hollywood, Monday during a session at the Nab Show. “We need the human behind the AI,” she said. “I feel cautiously optimistic that we will find a path for what will be a big part of our lives.”
In attendance at the National Association of Broadcasters Show in Las Vegas for the first time, Yang participated in a panel during which she provided an overview of the Academy and thoughts on AI to the engineering-heavy audience.

Days ahead of the anticipated press conference unveiling the lineup, Cannes Film Festival’s chief Thierry Fremaux has managed to keep a certain mystery around this year’s Official Selection, despite the numerous predictions flourishing on social media.
Even “Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning” hasn’t been officially confirmed by neither Cannes nor Paramount, but Fremaux tells Variety in an exclusive interview that he’s hoping to get a final go from the studio soon.
Rolling off back-to-back milestone editions that saw Cannes-bowing films go on to win Oscars, such as “Anatomy of a Fall” and “The Zone of Interest” in 2023 and “Anora,” “The Substance,” “Emilia Perez” and “Flow” in 2024, Fremaux suggests he’s received a record number of movies, especially from the U.S.
While some have suggested that the 2025 edition feels like the first post-strike Cannes, Fremaux says it “seems that Hollywood is in a period of transition.

We travel every day, don’t we? Most of the time, it is to familiar and known places—our offices, schools, or universities—by choice. Other times, circumstances force us toward destinations unknown. Yet, much like growth, journeys are inevitable. Gints Zibalodis’s dialogue-free film, “Flow” (2024), opens with a lone cat wandering among statues of its own kind—wooden carvings and paper drawings. Maybe once revered, now abandoned? Its solitude symbolises the passage of time and the fading significance once placed on a particular group or identity. Before this melancholic image settles in, catastrophe strikes. Survival already becomes a challenge for our meow-protagonist, and the movie’s flow begins.
“Flow” is a journey that reflects the immigrant experience—leaving behind familiarity, often not by choice but by necessity, navigating uncharted territories, and struggling for acceptance in communities that may not speak the same language or embrace differences. Even within our own cultures,...

Conan O’Brien can be forgiven for quipping “Over to you, Estonia” after Flow won Latvia its first Oscar last month. The concept of a shared Baltic Cinema is still a relatively obscure one: “We have this complicated identity, culturally,” Laurynas Bareiša explained to me recently at the Riga International Film Festival in a cozy corner of one of city’s oldest cafes, “because we’re not part of the Slavic world and we’re not geographically Scandinavian, but I think there’s a sense developing of this Baltic region.” If a wave is forming in that part of the world, Lithuanian filmmakers have been at its forefront––at least since Bareiša’s debut, Pilgrims, won Venice’s Orizzonti section in 2021.

The European Film Academy (Efa) is touting as a success its “month of European film” program, a pan-national screening event celebrating European cinema, as it outlines plans for an U.S.-style awards season for the old continent.
Nearly half a million viewers caught last year’s month of European film program, which ran in some 108 theaters across 42 European countries, a huge jump from 2022, the first year of the event, which recorded 61,000 admissions across 35 partners in 35 countries.

Whether it's Robert Eggers' darkly brooding Nosferatu, the painterly charms of Oscar-winning animation Flow, or the sun-bleached sands of Furiosa, you can't possibly appreciate the best that either small or silver screen has to offer unless you have the screen to do it justice. Thankfully, the best 55-inch TVs on the market today are better than ever. While upsizing your set is always a thrill, what if you're downsizing from a 65-inch model? Well, the size difference is surprisingly not such a big deal and you won't be losing out on features. A lot of the advanced bells and whistles we normally see in larger sets like 65-inch TVs (with micro dimming for deeper blacks and other tricks) have made their way into models as small as 43-inch TVs.

When people talk about animated movies, many think of Disney. Disney has released some iconic and popular animated films, from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to the recently released Moana 2. Through their partnership with Pixar Animations Studios, Disney released more memorable films like Toy Story, Monsters Inc., and Inside Out. Yet, while Disney animated films remain some of the best animated movies, there are many others released by other studios that are just as good as Disney animated movies or better.
With the success of the animated adventure film Flow, which won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, many are looking at animated movies outside the ones produced by Disney. Over the years, there have been many animated movies from studios like DreamWorks Animation and 20th Century Studios that managed to win over viewers. And while Walt Disney Animation Studios remains the leading studio for animated movies, there...

After “Flow” became the first Latvian film to win an Academy Award, the crew received much more than a warm welcome back home. Producer Matiss Kaza told IndieWire that when the Latvian filmmakers returned from Los Angeles, they were treated like they had won not just Oscar but Olympic gold.
“There was a special event at the monument of freedom in the center of Riga to welcome [us],” Kaza said. “Thousands gathered despite the late hour. A couple of days later, the entire team visited the president of Latvia. The three major trophies received by Flow were on display at the National Museum of Art, where they were seen by more than 28,000 people. Now, the trophies are touring the smaller Latvian cities, such as Liepāja, Cēsis, and Rēzekne so that fans in [those] regions can also see them in person. In Gints Zilbalodis’ Flow, a cat travels through a flooded, hazardous, post-human landscape, putting those feline survival skills to good use. Here, the Latvian director recounts to Empire's Ian Freer the nine stages of his own unique filmmaking journey.
1) Embarking
I think my personality is like a cat.
I want to be independent and do things my own way. After making my first feature, Away [2019, about a boy being chased by a monster], I had an opportunity to work on a bigger scale and so thought I should make a story about me figuring out how to collaborate. It wasn’t something I had past experience with; it was something I was going through in that moment.
When I was 15 I made a simple, seven-minute, hand-drawn short, Aqua, about a cat’s fear of water. When I decided to revisit this premise for a feature version, I wanted to focus more on the cat’s fear of others,...
