As Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament comes to a close, with the two most profitable movies of 2024 unveiled Thursday, we look at the movies that didn’t work. Streaming continues to be a wildcard: While traditional motion picture studios such as Disney, Warner Bros, Sony, Paramount and Universal rely on lucrative pay two and pay three streamer deals to catapult their slates into the black, those streamers who’ve embraced theatrical (specifically Amazon MGM Studios and Apple Original Films) have a clandestine metric as to how they evaluate a movie’s post-cinema success. Currently, Uziel is serving as writer, executive producer, and showrunner of Spider-Noir, the highly anticipated live-action comic book series for MGM+. “Severance” star John Turturro and Sony’s Tom Rothman will receive honors at the Museum of Moving Image’s annual benefit night, the Spring Moving Image Awards, on June 9.

The awards will be presented at the Sumner M. Redstone Theater, and a dinner will be held in the Hearst Lobby at the Queens, N.Y. museum.

Turturro returned to Season 2 of the Apple TV+ series “Severance” as Irving, an employee at the enigmatic Lumon company. He also appeared last year in the Pedro Almodóvar film “The Room Next Door” as Damian, a confidant to Julianne Moore’s character. Marvel fans will be waiting a little longer to see Nicolas Cage's highly anticipated return as Spider-Man Noir. A new report has revealed when Sony's live-action Marvel series Spider-Noir will make its debut on MGM+.

According to Nexus Point News, Spider-Noir will be released in early 2026 on MGM+ in the United States, with a global release on Prime Video to follow its domestic launch. Set in an alternate 1930s timeline, Spider-Noir will follow Cage's aging and down on his luck private investigator, who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero. The upcoming series, developed by The Punisher's Steve Lightfoot, will mark Cage's second time playing Spider-Man Noir after voicing the character in the 2018 animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

The film is set to be released on June 4, 2027, and Steinfeld told Josh Horowitz in an interview for MTV that she has recorded some stuff.

“We’re well into that thing,” she said.

Although Steinfeld was seemingly nervous about what she could say or not about the Marvel film, she said, “You’ve gotta trust the process.”

“If there’s one thing I’ve learned with that — it’s that,” she added. “You put it in their hands and you’re gonna end up with something masterful. So just gotta go with it.”

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verseis all set to swing onto a new streaming home. And it's one that allows fans to watch the animated sequel alongside several other Spider-Man titles. It goes without saying that Spider-Man is one of the biggest and best superheroes of all time. The webslinger has been thrilling audiences on the silver screen for the past 25 years and readers in the pages of Marvel Comics for a lot longer than that. It simply doesn't get bigger than the legendary wall-crawler.

We know that there are some big things destined for Spidey in the years ahead, too. Tom Holland is set to reprise his role as Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. An alternate version of the character will return in the second season of animated series Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, too. And after that, Holland's version will return in 2027 outing Avengers: Secret Wars.

Before we get to all of that, though, this May is going to be an important month for fans of the webslinger.

Yes, some shows may have a pretty slow start, only later becoming great, but those cases are few, especially in 2025 when attention spans are shorter than ever.

The first episode of To Be Hero X made me realize exactly how important it is for any show to start with a bang. What I thought would be just another lackluster animated series ended up becoming a show I am looking forward to the most this season.

"Spider-Man" is one of the most popular superheroes of all time, and one that is quite versatile when it comes to adaptations. We've had several "Spider-Man" shows and movies, from live-action to animation and video games, each with a unique take, visual style, and tone. Tom Holland's boyish Peter Parker is vastly different from Jake Johnson's jaded Peter B. Parker and Tobey Maguire's tragic, mopey version of the character (which audiences voted as the single best live-action Peter Parker).

Even in animation, we've seen many different interpretations from voice actors across games, TV, and film, portraying Peter as an older man, a newcomer just getting started with his powers, or an established hero. Though there have been many animated "Spider-Man" TV shows, each with their own fans and defenders, one show is usually left out of the conversation — MTV's "Spider-Man: The New Animated Series."

Warner Bros/Legendary’s A Minecraft Movie is digging into a strong start at the international box office, with projections for the overseas and global weekend rising. Through Thursday in 55 offshore markets, the running cume is $18.4M. This does not include Friday’s China opening which was the biggest for a Hollywood film so far this year at an estimated $6.6M (see more detail below).

Marvel fans should get used to seeing Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin just on the small screen. The Daredevil: Born Again actor recently revealed why his fan-favorite villain won't be appearing in any Marvel Cinematic Universe movie anytime soon.

Speaking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, D'Onofrio revealed that Kingpin is prohibited from appearing on the big screen. "I’m only usable for television shows… Not even a one-off Wilson Fisk movie," he shared. "It’s all caught up in rights and stuff. I don’t know when that would work out or if it ever would work out at all." D'Onofrio's comments are interesting considering that Kingpin has appeared in movies before, played by Michael Clarke Duncan in Daredevil (2003) and voiced by Liev Schreiber in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018).

Amazon MGM Studios’ CinemaCon presentation began on Wednesday night with a look at the first trailer for Ryan Gosling’s “Project Hail Mary.”

The filmed-for-IMAX movie from directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller is based on Andy Weir’s 2021 novel by the same name. Gosling stars as Ryland Grace, a middle school science teacher-turned-astronaut who wakes up from a coma and finds himself alone on a space station — with absolutely no memory of how (or why) he got there.

The ten-year anniversary celebrations for director Christopher Nolan's epic science-fiction film Interstellar are showing no signs of abating. Not too long after the movie was re-released in theaters worldwide, it entered a rather exclusive list on the platform Letterboxd, where users can log, review, and rate films. Interstellar is now among only three titles on the platform with over five million views. Released in 2014, the film featured Matthew McConaughey as a NASA astronaut who goes on a mission to find a habitable new planet for a severely endangered humankind.

On Monday, Letterboxd announced that Interstellar had become the latest film to achieve over 5 million views, joining Greta Gerwig's Barbie and David Fincher's Fight Club. It's an eclectic list that reflects the diverse tastes of the platform's users. While Interstellar is a philosophical big screen spectacle, Barbie is a satirical comedy drama, and Fight Club is the definition of a cult hit.

Sony Pictures closed out their CinemaCon showcase by revealing the title of Tom Holland’s next “Spider-Man” movie: “Spider-Man: Brand New Day”

Director Destin Daniel Cretton revealed the title by telling a story about how his one-year-old son’s first word was “Spider-Man,” something that happened when the infant pointed at a cover of the comic “Spider-Man: Most Wanted.” He then presented a video reel from Tom Holland, who announced the title but promised he was “well past the hump of spoilers.”

The film will be released in between the two upcoming “Avengers” films: “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars,” and will show Holland’s Peter Parker dealing with a brand new start after the events of “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” in which all memory of him and his secret identity was erased from the universe.

Holland’s film will also come after the actor signed a new producing deal with Sony.

The third and final installment in the Miles Morales trilogy of animated Spider-Man movies has finally been given a release date.

The movie was originally supposed to hit theaters in March 2024, but was pushed back due to the 2023 strikes.

Sony Marvel’s Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, the third in their animation trilogy, is finally returning to the release date schedule. Audiences can expect the film to bow in theaters June 4, 2027.

The movie, which originally had a theatrical release date of March 29, 2024, was pushed back in July 2023 due to the strikes. This was due to a number of voiceovers being unavailable. Also, it takes a lot of work to make these stylistic, groundbreaking animated titles work. We were told at the Spider-Man: Across the Universe premiere back in June 2023 that the print on screen was literally wet having been locked just days prior.

The animated movies are massively successful: The 2018 first chapter, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse received an Animated Feature Oscar and the 2023 sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse also garnered a nod. Together, both movies have grossed $1.08 billion.

“Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse,” the third entry in Sony’s animated web-slinging trilogy, will swing into theaters… in a few years. It’ll be released on June 4, 2027.

“We know how important this franchise is to so many people around us. We just could not run it back,” the filmmaking team of producer Phil Lord and co-directors Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson said at CinemaCon, the movie theater trade show that’s currently unfolding in Las Vegas. “So, we decided we needed to take the time to make sure we got it just right.”

Lord promises, though, “It’s going to be a massive finale to the trilogy.”

While most mainstream pop culture consumers know Marvel's Wilson Fisk aka The Kingpin thanks to Vincent D'Onofrio’s iconic portrayal of the villain in various shows, the character has had countless appearances outside the comics over the decades. Now, as Kingpin is ruling the streets of New York on Daredevil: Born Again, Hasbro has just unveiled their latest figure based on the menacing mob boss.

A part of Hasbro's Marvel Legends Gamerverse collection, this new Kingpin figure is designed after his Spider-Man game look. The six-inch scale piece is seen in his black suit from this critically-acclaimed universe. The figure also comes with a few accessories, like an alternate head sculpt, two interchangeable hands and the villain's signature cane. Kingpin now joins Black Cat, Venom, Peter Parker and Miles Morales in Marvel Legends’ Gamerverse collection.

While nobody can deny these heroes’ popularity, there’s a growing rumble of discontent from players who main other characters. “We filmed it in — I think it may come out in both black and white and color, but when we filmed it, the monitors were all black and white, so you got this feeling and it looked very, very authentic,” Haas said. “To the point that I would actually go and look at the monitor and think I was looking at some older footage, but it was actually just a monitor of what was on the camera at the time. They did a beautiful job with the filters and all that stuff, making it look like genuine old 1930s, black and white film.

In fact, Cage will be reprising his role in glorious live-action form with a highly anticipated new Spider-Man series for MGM+, Spider-Noir. It features a stellar cast alongside the celebrated star, including longtime performer Lukas Haas. MovieWeb recently caught up with Haas while he was promoting the release of his new caper film High Rollers, a quick follow-up to last year's release Cash Out. Haas also took time to reflect on his experience shooting Spider-Noir.

"It was a really, really cool project to be a part of. I had a great time working on that. Nic is so cool and awesome," Haas told us. "And Brendan Gleeson is amazing. He plays my boss.

Amazon MGM Studios’ upcoming live-action Spider-Noir series is shaping up to be one of the most visually distinct Marvel adaptations to date.

Set in a gritty, crime-ridden version of 1930s New York, the show will introduce a unique take on the Spider-Man mythos, starring Con Air's Nicolas Cage as the hardened, noir-inspired hero. While Cage previously voiced the character in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), this will mark his first live-action portrayal of the fan-favorite alternate-universe Spider-Man.

While many details about Spider-Noir remain under wraps, the series is expected to fully embrace the classic film noir aesthetic. According to Spider-Noir co-star Lukas Haas in an interview with ComingSoon, Spider-Noir was shot in a way that captures the shadowy, dramatic visuals of classic noir cinema.

The 2025 Academy Awards have come and gone, and the anime community once more finds itself disappointed with no nominations within the field.
