As Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament comes to a close, with the two most profitable movies of 2024 unveiled Thursday, we look at the movies that didn’t work. Streaming continues to be a wildcard: While traditional motion picture studios such as Disney, Warner Bros, Sony, Paramount and Universal rely on lucrative pay two and pay three streamer deals to catapult their slates into the black, those streamers who’ve embraced theatrical (specifically Amazon MGM Studios and Apple Original Films) have a clandestine metric as to how they evaluate a movie’s post-cinema success. By traditional studio P&l standards, some of those releases would be considered flops. Given that, Apple and Amazon are excluded from this year’s survey.

Michael B. Jordan stars as twins Smoke and Stack in Ryan Coogler's new vampire film, Sinners, which has finally landed in theaters after being pushed back from its original March release date. As audiences head to cinemas to check out the latest Jordan-Coogler collaboration, the film's star recently teased that he would be open to returning as Smoke and Stack for a prequel, but only if Coogler feels the film is necessary.
Speaking with GamesRadar+, Jordan and Coogler addressed the chances of a prequel to Sinners, given how much history is alluded to in the film regarding Smoke and Stack. "I mean, you know, I'm always… I'd be up for it," Jordan told GamesRadar+. However, Jordan would clarify that a prequel would be up to Coogler, who wouldn't outright dismiss the idea of a prequel, but seems more than happy to keep Sinners as a standalone film. "I mean,...

Hailee Steinfeld is set to reprise her role in the animated film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and shared her take on the process.
The film is set to be released on June 4, 2027, and Steinfeld told Josh Horowitz in an interview for MTV that she has recorded some stuff.
“We’re well into that thing,” she said.
Although Steinfeld was seemingly nervous about what she could say or not about the Marvel film, she said, “You’ve gotta trust the process.”
“If there’s one thing I’ve learned with that — it’s that,” she added. “You put it in their hands and you’re gonna end up with something masterful. So just gotta go with it.”

So… Hailee Steinfeld is not at all helpful when it comes to giving an update about release dates and key announcements. No personal hate for her, but I can’t sleep now.
Beyond the Spider-Verse is an upcoming animated film that is a sequel to Across the Spider-Verse, and the film was announced a while back. However, this much-awaited film… does not have any promising updates so far.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verseis all set to swing onto a new streaming home. And it's one that allows fans to watch the animated sequel alongside several other Spider-Man titles. The critically acclaimed sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sets up a third film, Beyond the Spider-Verse, which won't open until 2027. Unlike the other major studios, Sony Pictures does not have a streaming platform of its own, so it sells and licenses its films to other streamers.
According to Discussing Film, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will begin streaming on Disney+ starting May 1, 2025. The movie was previously streaming on Netflix. Sony Pictures has a deal with Netflix and Disney+ to stream their titles, with Netflix being the first choice for the studio's film slate after the theatrical window, with Disney getting them in the second run, typically 18 months or more after they open in theaters. It goes without saying that Spider-Man is one of the biggest and best superheroes of all time. The webslinger has been thrilling audiences on the silver screen for the past 25 years and readers in the pages of Marvel Comics for a lot longer than that. It simply doesn't get bigger than the legendary wall-crawler.
We know that there are some big things destined for Spidey in the years ahead, too. Tom Holland is set to reprise his role as Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. An alternate version of the character will return in the second season of animated series Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, too. And after that, Holland's version will return in 2027 outing Avengers: Secret Wars.
Before we get to all of that, though, this May is going to be an important month for fans of the webslinger.

People say we should not judge a book by its cover, but as humans, we all end up doing just that. This is why if a show doesn’t really have a promising trailer or teaser, our expectations from it start to dwindle.
Thus, the first episode is hands down one of the most important episodes for any series because that majorly decides how much love it will get from fans. Yes, some shows may have a pretty slow start, only later becoming great, but those cases are few, especially in 2025 when attention spans are shorter than ever.

The first episode of To Be Hero X made me realize exactly how important it is for any show to start with a bang. What I thought would be just another lackluster animated series ended up becoming a show I am looking forward to the most this season.

In the world of Hollywood, where relationships come and go in the blink of an eye, actress Olivia Munn and John Mulaney have become one of the most talked-about couples in the industry. While the duo is in a loving relationship, their career paths couldn’t be more different, and maybe that’s what makes it so interesting. Munn is known for her acting chops and has a slew of well-acclaimed movies to her name.
On the other hand, Mulaney is a popular comedian with a very sharp sense of humor and a solid career built on stand-up shows. So, evidently, when these two got together, many fans were left surprised. Their relationship came out of nowhere, but over time, it became clear that they indeed had a very strong bond.

Hailee Steinfeld's first comic book role was as Spider-Gwen in 2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, but she entered the MCU as Kate Bishop to widespread acclaim in Disney's Hawkeye in 2021.
The character has been on the shelf ever since, though she did briefly appear at the end of The Marvels when Ms. Marvel set out to assemble her own team of Young Avengers Champions. The expectation now is that both characters will return in Avengers: Doomsday.
Marvel Studios would be foolish to waste an actor as talented as Steinfeld. And, while Jeremy Renner intends to reprise his role as Clint Barton following his miraculous recovery from a snow plow accident, he's bound to pass the torch eventually.
Talking to Backstage about her role in Sinners, Steinfeld confirmed her intention to return as Kate in the MCU.

From the ‘80s all the way to the early 2010s, Nicolas Cage was one of the most popular actors in all of Hollywood. I became a fan of his after watching Con Air and Face/Off on a loop because they were on TV all the time. But while most of his films were released on the big screen first until 2013, he turned a page in 2014 and didn’t stop starring in direct-to-video movies until 2017. Many were perplexed as to why Cage was tarnishing his image like that, but I think he didn’t shy away from admitting that he was doing it to pay the bills—bills with a lot of zeros in them. It seemed like he was en route to starting a new era by featuring in projects like Mandy, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and Pig. And he kind of did. Nowadays, while he does show up in...

"Spider-Man" is one of the most popular superheroes of all time, and one that is quite versatile when it comes to adaptations. We've had several "Spider-Man" shows and movies, from live-action to animation and video games, each with a unique take, visual style, and tone. Tom Holland's boyish Peter Parker is vastly different from Jake Johnson's jaded Peter B. Parker and Tobey Maguire's tragic, mopey version of the character (which audiences voted as the single best live-action Peter Parker).
Even in animation, we've seen many different interpretations from voice actors across games, TV, and film, portraying Peter as an older man, a newcomer just getting started with his powers, or an established hero. Though there have been many animated "Spider-Man" TV shows, each with their own fans and defenders, one show is usually left out of the conversation — MTV's "Spider-Man: The New Animated Series."
This was a wild experiment.

Marvel fans should get used to seeing Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin just on the small screen. The Daredevil: Born Again actor recently revealed why his fan-favorite villain won't be appearing in any Marvel Cinematic Universe movie anytime soon.
Speaking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, D'Onofrio revealed that Kingpin is prohibited from appearing on the big screen. "I’m only usable for television shows… Not even a one-off Wilson Fisk movie," he shared. "It’s all caught up in rights and stuff. I don’t know when that would work out or if it ever would work out at all." D'Onofrio's comments are interesting considering that Kingpin has appeared in movies before, played by Michael Clarke Duncan in Daredevil (2003) and voiced by Liev Schreiber in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018).

Amazon MGM Studios’ CinemaCon presentation began on Wednesday night with a look at the first trailer for Ryan Gosling’s “Project Hail Mary.”
The filmed-for-IMAX movie from directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller is based on Andy Weir’s 2021 novel by the same name. Gosling stars as Ryland Grace, a middle school science teacher-turned-astronaut who wakes up from a coma and finds himself alone on a space station — with absolutely no memory of how (or why) he got there.
On Earth, Sandra Hüller’s character recruits a reluctant Grace who complains “I put the not in astronaut. I can’t even moonwalk.”
“The whole world is counting on you,” she says. Scenes ensue on the space ship called “Hail Mary.”
The character’s memory begins to return over time. He must figure out how to complete his interstellar mission to save Earth from an astronomical catastrophe completely alone, until...

The ten-year anniversary celebrations for director Christopher Nolan's epic science-fiction film Interstellar are showing no signs of abating. Not too long after the movie was re-released in theaters worldwide, it entered a rather exclusive list on the platform Letterboxd, where users can log, review, and rate films. Interstellar is now among only three titles on the platform with over five million views. Released in 2014, the film featured Matthew McConaughey as a NASA astronaut who goes on a mission to find a habitable new planet for a severely endangered humankind.
On Monday, Letterboxd announced that Interstellar had become the latest film to achieve over 5 million views, joining Greta Gerwig's Barbie and David Fincher's Fight Club. It's an eclectic list that reflects the diverse tastes of the platform's users. While Interstellar is a philosophical big screen spectacle, Barbie is a satirical comedy drama, and Fight Club is the definition of a cult hit.

Sony Pictures closed out their CinemaCon showcase by revealing the title of Tom Holland’s next “Spider-Man” movie: “Spider-Man: Brand New Day”
Director Destin Daniel Cretton revealed the title by telling a story about how his one-year-old son’s first word was “Spider-Man,” something that happened when the infant pointed at a cover of the comic “Spider-Man: Most Wanted.” He then presented a video reel from Tom Holland, who announced the title but promised he was “well past the hump of spoilers.”
The film will be released in between the two upcoming “Avengers” films: “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars,” and will show Holland’s Peter Parker dealing with a brand new start after the events of “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” in which all memory of him and his secret identity was erased from the universe.
Holland’s film will also come after the actor signed a new producing deal with Sony.

Sony Marvel’s Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, the third in their animation trilogy, is finally returning to the release date schedule. Audiences can expect the film to bow in theaters June 4, 2027.
The movie, which originally had a theatrical release date of March 29, 2024, was pushed back in July 2023 due to the strikes. This was due to a number of voiceovers being unavailable. Also, it takes a lot of work to make these stylistic, groundbreaking animated titles work. We were told at the Spider-Man: Across the Universe premiere back in June 2023 that the print on screen was literally wet having been locked just days prior.
The animated movies are massively successful: The 2018 first chapter, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse received an Animated Feature Oscar and the 2023 sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse also garnered a nod. Together, both movies have grossed $1.08 billion.

“Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse,” the third entry in Sony’s animated web-slinging trilogy, will swing into theaters… in a few years. It’ll be released on June 4, 2027.

Early Cartoon Network was a wild time for imagination in animation. After being created mostly to just air classic Warner Bros., Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Hanna-Barbera cartoons, the mid-'90s saw Cartoon Network get into original programming with the introduction of Cartoon Cartoons. These were animated shorts that later got turned into full animated series like "Dexter's Laboratory," "Johnny Bravo," "Cow and Chicken," "Courage the Cowardly Dog," and "The Powerpuff Girls" -- shows that remain some of the best of the past 30 years. It was a time of great experimentation without a house style or a formula that allows for a series of cartoons that pushed the medium forward in visual style, tone, kineticism, and characters.
Many of these shows shared a lot of the same crew, with the very first Cartoon Cartoon, "Dexter's Laboratory," staffing future legends of the medium like Rob Renzetti, Seth MacFarlane, Butch Hartman, and "The Powerpuff Girls...

When it was revealed that longtime James Bond stewards Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson would no longer be producing the next 007 movie for Amazon MGM Studios, the question became “Who will?” The answer, as reported across multiple trades Tuesday morning, is Amy Pascal and David Heyman, two veteran producers who know plenty about the world of massive franchises.
Pascal, in her role as an executive and chairperson at Sony/Columbia Pictures, oversaw the production of the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield Spider-Man movies as well as James Bond adventures Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, and Skyfall. Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man took inspiration from Spider-Man's portrayal in the MCU but, in the spirit of the Multiverse Saga, made some key alterations that sent Peter Parker's story spiraling in a radical new direction. In this version of Spider-Man's origin story, the young superhero has been mentored by Norman Osborn, aka Green Goblin in the source material. Season 1 also partnered Peter up with a supporting cast not normally associated with Spider-Man, including Nico Minoru and Pearl Pangan.

I’m really looking forward to Nicolas Cage’s Spider-Noir, and one actor on the series has teased that it could double down on the film noir aspect. While speaking with ComingSoon.net, Lukas Haas said Spider-Noir could be released in black-and-white. I’d be into that.
“We filmed it in — I think it may come out in both black and white and color, but when we filmed it, the monitors were all black and white, so you got this feeling and it looked very, very authentic,” Haas said. “To the point that I would actually go and look at the monitor and think I was looking at some older footage, but it was actually just a monitor of what was on the camera at the time. They did a beautiful job with the filters and all that stuff, making it look like genuine old 1930s, black and white film.

If one of your favorite versions of the famed webhead from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) was Spider-Man Noir — voiced to perfection by Oscar-winner Nicolas Cage — then fret not. That's not the last you've heard from the scene-stealing webslinger. In fact, Cage will be reprising his role in glorious live-action form with a highly anticipated new Spider-Man series for MGM+, Spider-Noir. It features a stellar cast alongside the celebrated star, including longtime performer Lukas Haas. MovieWeb recently caught up with Haas while he was promoting the release of his new caper film High Rollers, a quick follow-up to last year's release Cash Out. Haas also took time to reflect on his experience shooting Spider-Noir.
"It was a really, really cool project to be a part of. I had a great time working on that. Nic is so cool and awesome," Haas told us. "And Brendan Gleeson is amazing. He plays my boss.

Amazon MGM Studios’ upcoming live-action Spider-Noir series is shaping up to be one of the most visually distinct Marvel adaptations to date.
Set in a gritty, crime-ridden version of 1930s New York, the show will introduce a unique take on the Spider-Man mythos, starring Con Air's Nicolas Cage as the hardened, noir-inspired hero. While Cage previously voiced the character in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), this will mark his first live-action portrayal of the fan-favorite alternate-universe Spider-Man.
While many details about Spider-Noir remain under wraps, the series is expected to fully embrace the classic film noir aesthetic. According to Spider-Noir co-star Lukas Haas in an interview with ComingSoon, Spider-Noir was shot in a way that captures the shadowy, dramatic visuals of classic noir cinema.
“It was just an incredible project,” Haas shared in the interview. “We filmed it in—I think it may come out in both black and white and color,...

The 2025 Academy Awards have come and gone, and the anime community once more finds itself disappointed with no nominations within the field. The Oscars have had a long history of overlooking anime, but to be snubbed for another year—especially when Kiyotaka Oshiyama’s Look Back was more than eligible for the running—had anime fans everywhere shaking their heads.
Previous anime productions have snagged an Oscar in the past, however. Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away became the first anime feature to win an Academy Award in 2001, followed by The Boy and The Heron in 2024. In recent years, other Studio Ghibli productions and anime films have also contended for the entertainment industry's most coveted award, with some close to winning.

The Spider-Verse is set to grow even more, and while Sony’s Spider-Man Universe has seemingly gone down in flames with the box office bombing of Kraven the Hunter, the Marvel Cinematic Universe still has big plans for Web-Head. Aside from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' Destin Daniel Cretton heading up Tom Holland’s fourth Spider-Man standalone, there’s the delayed Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse alongside rumors that Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire could return for Avengers: Secret Wars.
Given that the events of the Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man led directly into 2015’s Secret Wars, which then led to the Ultimate Universe being folded into ‘main’ Marvel continuity with Miles Morales in tow, there are questions about whether this will play out in the MCU. There’s already plenty of talk about a supposed ‘reset’ following Secret Wars, and even though it’s only a matter of...

Sadie Sink has been cast in the next Spider-Man movie and the options for her role are plentiful!
Fans are eager for Spider-Man 4, which should be a new direction for the Wall-Crawler in the MCU. Following the events of 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home, the world has forgotten Peter Parker's secret identity, including best friends Mj and Ned. Thus, Peter (Tom Holland) is starting out as more of a Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.
The plot details are tight, yet it's now confirmed that Sadie Sink will be joining the new movie. The actress is best known for her breakout role as Max on Netflix's hit Stranger Things and showed her acting chops in 2022's The Whale.

This article contains major spoilers for the third episode of "Daredevil: Born Again."
If there's one thing that would satisfy fans of Marvel Studios' latest TV series "Daredevil: Born Again" more than watching Charlie Cox bend henchmen like warm pastries, it's throwing in major Marvel names to get us into full "Buddy the Elf mode" and frantically crying out, "I know him! I know him!" The third episode of Matt Murdock's massively violent new story sees him do just that while defending his new client, Hector Ayala (Kamar de los Reyes), and explaining to the court just how much of a hero he truly is.
After revealing to the jury that Ayala is the vigilante known as White Tiger, a series of testimonies come from those saved by this new hero in town, demonstrating that the incident at the subway station was accidental, after all. To further establish Ayala's character,...
