Before Aerosmith made it big, the band opted for some interesting techniques in the recording studio. While it’s common for musicians to use non-traditional instruments on a track, Aerosmith’s creative recording of “Sweet Emotion” takes the cake. Even the band’s biggest fans could have never guessed the inventive way Steven Tyler utilized a sugar packet in the classic rock hit.

Going by your voting in the poll that followed last week’s recap of The Voice, Chris Blue should have this contest in the bag. Going by the most recent iTunes rankings, it’s Lauren Duski’s to lose. Either way, we should get a winner we can all be happy with (even if their winning means we’ll only ever hear of them again if they return to the show to plug a new single). There was, of course, a chance that Jesse Larson, whose spot Hunter Plake probably should have, or Aliyah Moulden, whose spot Brennley Brown probably should have,...

They’re singing oldies, but will they be goodies?
American Idol‘s Season 14 semifinalists are gearing up for a second week of performances from Detroit — tonight and Thursday (8/7c on Fox) — and TVLine’s got the exclusive scoop on their Motown-themed song choices.
We’ve got the entire 24-track set list — but while all of last week’s performers prepped tunes and received some mentoring from living legend Aretha Franklin, only 16 of ‘em will take the stage.

Only a few days out from the release of his new “definitive collection” box set, David Bowie has released a suitably noirish new music video for “Sue (Or In A Season Of Crime)”. Directed by Tom Hingston and photographer Jimmy King, the video features footage of Bowie and the Maria Schneider Orchestra recording the track in a studio, superimposed atop shots of a dark, smoke-filled city. “Sue” and Bowie’s recently released demo “Tis a Pity She Was a Whore” will be released both as a digital single and a 10-inch vinyl, first in the U.K. on November 17th, then as a “Black Friday” in the U.S. on November 28th. The video was made to promote “Nothing Has Changed,” a new retrospective box that presents songs from throughout Bowie’s career in reverse chronological order. Watch the video below.

Only a few days out from the release of his new "definitive collection" box set, David Bowie takes you out to an alley and laments your death. The Thin White Duke has released the new music video for "Sue (Or In A Season Of Crime)" that's black and white and film noir all over. Serving more as a lyric video than a narrative, the clip is directed by Tom Hingston (who leads a British creative agency) and photographer Jimmy King. It subtly lets you focus on the small story Bowie's telling of Sue, and the humming contributions of the Maria Schneider Orchestra and Grammy Award-nominated saxophone honcho Donnie McCaslin. "Sue" and Bowie's recently released (and dizzyingly titled) demo "Tis a Pity She Was a Whore" were released in promoting "Nothing Has Changed," a new retrospective box set from Bowie and Columbia/Legacy. It comes in a variety of formats --...

Mick Jagger and David Bowie recorded a terrible song for a good cause back in 1985, covering the Motown hit “Dancing in the Street” for Live Aid. Mario Wienerroither resuscitated the rock icons’ rendition of the Motown classic for his music-less music videos series. You get all of the dance moves, with some grunts and prancing thrown in, without any of the cooing. In other words, it is the perfect jazzercising video. A big winner at the Astaire Awards this year was Broadway smash “Motown,” which took home honors for choreographers Patricia Wilcox and Warren Adams (they tied with “Pippin” choreographer Chet Walker) and performer Eric Lajuan Summers, who received the award for outstanding male dancer in a Broadway show. A jukebox musical of Motown hits that range from “Dancing in the Street” to “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” “Motown” wouldn’t seem to need much in the way of choreography given that Diana Ross and the Supremes and the rest of the record label artists already created the steps. Not so, according to Wilcox. “There are certain iconic moves,” she says. For instance, you can’t have someone singing “Stop! In the Name of Love” without the hand in the air. “I think if you put in one of those iconic moves for those groups, then you can essentially do...

Rumours abound that David Bowie is among the stars due to make a surprise appearance at this year's Glastonbury Festival.
As the first festival-goers pick up their wellies and start making their way down to Somerset after a year without the world's biggest Festival, bookies are offering plenty of odds as to what musicians will be turning up.
Are Bowie fans' dreams to come true?
The Rolling Stones are Sunday's headline act, and the veteran rockers have form when it comes to inviting unannounced guests to share the stage.
Bookies William Hill are offering different odds on star performers, with the most likely being Jeff Beck, currently on tour in the UK, at odds of 4/7. The Boss Bruce Springsteen is similarly well placed to appear, with odds of 11/10. Bowie is an outside hope of sharing the stage with Sir Mick, possibly to reprise their 1985 hit 'Dancing in the Street'.

Holy Drokk, Batman! A crossover between the bat vigilante and the fascistic future policeman? Unfortunately it’s not as good as it sounds and somehow John Wagner managed to get four books out of this unlikely team-up. “The Batman/Judge Dredd Collection” features all 4 crossover stories and, bizarrely, 1 crossover story featuring Dredd and Lobo.
But how do these two disparate characters cross paths? Well, in the first story, “Judgment on Gotham”, Judge Death gets his claws on a transdimensional belt, allowing him to jump dimensions from Mega City One to judge the living in Gotham. Batman stops him (of course) and afterwards touches the belt thus transporting him to Dredd’s stomping ground. The two tango before Dredd finally gets that Batman is a good guy and then they set off to stop Death and Mean Machine.
It’s not an amazing story but it’s more or less serviceable...

New York, Feb 7 (Reuters) - Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr. watched with approval on Thursday as the cast of upcoming Broadway show "Motown: The Musical" tore through the storied record label's hits at a 42nd Street rehearsal studio.
The show traces Gordy's rise from a struggling boxer and autoworker to a music mogul who made stars of Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, The Jackson 5 and others.
"So many other people were telling the story in different ways who were never there and never understood it, just for the sake of exploitation," Gordy, 83, a producer of the show, told Reuters.
The media preview featured hits ranging from The Contours' "Do You Love Me" - sung as a segregated audience in Birmingham, Alabama, breaks through a rope to hear the group - to "Dancing in the Street" by Martha and the Vandellas.

We’ve kind of heard forever that rock gods David Bowie and Mick Jagger were a little more than friends and duet partners back in the day. I mean, “Dancing in the Street” was an abomination to music, but those two had chemistry in that video. So, we weren’t exactly shocked to read the excerpt of Christopher Anderson’s Mick: The Wild Life and Mad Genius of Jagger in the New York Daily News yesterday that spills details about their mutual admiration. The two became friends at the height of the androgenous glam rock era (circa 1973), when Bowie performed as Ziggy Stardust. The book quotes several of their friends, as well as Bowie’s then-wife Angie Bowie, as having witnessed their closeness. Angie says she walked in on them hanging out naked in bed together. Bowie backup singer Ava Cherry reportedly told a friend that she’d even been...

The Voice may not have come out as strong as it has in the past but it still managed to deliver two hours of great entertainment. Monday night on "The Voice," Cee Lo Green was full of hot air. No, not in his comments to the contestants. He just farted.
At first, host Carson Daly was confused about why the coaches were laughing. “What’d you say? Your nervous?” Daly asked the judges. “I have gas,” Cee Lo replied. And the gas pass came up again when the coaches were giving advice.
“Follow your heart and be in the moment. You’re their coach,” Christina Aguilera told a contestant. To which Adam Levine quipped, “Just follow your fart.”
Well, that’s the glory of a live show. Although, as MTV pointed out -- host Carson Daly seemed a little disappointed with the judges.

"The Voice" kicked off this week which a serious case of the giggles and what was to come was easily the most bizarre episode of this show ever. And that includes Cee Lo's wig, his group trip to the massage parlor and his serious fauxhawks.
Initially, we're not sure why the coadges are all fighting back laughter. But once we learn, we wish we had stayed uncertain. Turns out, Cee Lo is having some gas issues.
As irritable father figure Carson tells the coadges, "Let's focus here," Christina says, "Why do you think I got this fan?" Luckily for the pop star, she has a paper fan, while Cee Lo has a mini battery-operated one. Unfortunately, no one has that one you can get in Disney World that's a bottle with a fan head because clearly they're the coolest.

With no more save for the judges to use and 53 millions votes cast this week, the final six was created and what an interesting group of contestants we have left in the game. Testone, while in the bottom three yet again, her second home as Jimmy Iovine said, she was not the one to get the boot. Shocking as that may have been, the person who was eliminated did not seem like he’d be the next one to go. So this elimination was disappointing on definitely more than one level. Prior to the results, the top seven gave a fun performance of “Dancing in the Street” and delivered their weekly Ford music video which was more frightening and disturbing than entertaining. Who was in charge of makeup, hair, and wardrobe for the music video? Yikes. Season 8 American Idol winner, Kris Allen also performed his new single, “The Vision Of...

So here we go! It is time to really seriously say good-bye to someone tonight, as the judges have used their save and we have to get this thing finished by August. Back in the old days, the post-save week meant two eliminations, but I guess the public shaming of Jermaine Jones bought us an extra week. Taylor Hicks is in the audience! My first thought is: How did that dude get a ticket? Also in the house, the only Idol alumnus whose album I own: Elliott Yamin. (True story! It’s pretty good!) I am delighted to tell you that the group number is not awful; the kids do Martha & the Vandellas’ “Dancing in the Street,” and it is a billion times more dignified than the Mick Jagger–David Bowie version from 1985. You know what else is more dignified than the Mick Jagger–David Bowie version of “Dancing in...

American Idol is my baby. My girl. My boyfriend with the toothy, messed-up grin. Idol is my everything -- and it's certainly better than The Voice, but if it makes you uncomfortable to admit that, we can pretend this sentence never happened. Bottom line: Idol is back with a weird group of strangers, and after their first week of competition, my contestant rankings have shifted like abacus beads tabulating Steven Tyler's age.

X Factor judge Gary Barlow has suggested that Misha B will not win The X Factor after being accused of bullying on the show. The 19-year-old impressed the panel with her performances of 'Dancing In The Street' by Martha and the Vandellas and Pink's 'Perfect' in tonight's semi-final, but Barlow stated that she may have lost favour with the public weeks ago when Tulisa Contostavlos and Louis Walsh claimed that she had been "mean" to other contestants.

With all the controversy surrounding transgender contestant, Chaz Bono, the proverbial show went on. Dancing With The Stars‘ 13th season premiered last night and debuted with a cha-cha! Shaking and shimmying to Dancing in The Street, the dancing was a bit rough, but top marks for fun and enthusiasm, right? Chaz has put aside all the hating coming in from all sides about him being transgender, which could not have been easy. A lot of people have wanted him ousted from the show.
The judges were somewhat encouraging, with Carrie Ann Inaba exclaiming, “You can dance!” and Len Goodman pointing out his “good footwork and great attitude.” Still, scores were on the low side with the pair getting two 6′s and one 5. Do you agree?...

If Lauren Ambrose -- the Six Feet Under star who was officially anointed Broadway's new Funny Girl -- didn't seem as obvious a choice for the role of Fanny Brice as Lea Michele, now you can stop second-guessing: Footage of Ambrose on Star Search has surfaced, and Ed McMahon directly endorsed her stardom. Get ready for the growliest rendition of "Dancing in the Street" you've ever heard. Sweet music!

It’s a very confusing week to rank the American Idol Top 11. The Idoloonie Nation put Stefano Langone and Casey Abrams in the bottom two for their crimes against music during Motown Week, but could the former front-runners experience upticks in votes following their brushes with doom (and that dramatic Judges’ Save)? Naima Adedapo, meanwhile, conquered her pitch problems and added a dramatic dance interlude on “Dancing in the Street,” but will the inconsistent diva continue her forward momentum on Elton John Night? And what to do with polarizing vocalists like Paul McDonald and Jacob Lusk, neither of whom has ever faced the bottom three?...

While the gospel belter wows the judges, Casey Abrams' take on another Marvin Gaye classic fails to impress.

Last week, we awarded a handful of gold stars to "American Idol" judge Steven Tyler for commentary filled with wacky maxims and wackier metaphors (seven days on, we still don't know what he meant by "ethnic what-it-is-ness"). This week, we're forced to dole out a demerit to Jennifer Lopez, because four weeks into the voting portion of the show, the new judge still hasn't learned that — in class as in reality competitions — you need to wait your turn to talk. Over and over on Wednesday night, J. Lo interrupted her fellow judges, talking over Randy Jackson and butting in as Tyler, once again, dipped the English language in LSD.

This was it — the night American Idol fans have been waiting for. That is, if you could get past the fact that majority of the 11 songs performed had been covered by previous contestants. And overlook the weird, revisionist-history editing of several finalists’ introductory packages. And, of course, avoid smashing your television in rage over the appalling Gordon Ramsay committing the worst act of douchery in 10 seasons of Idol.
But, hey, just like we readily accept that Steven Tyler wears sheer, sparkly, leopard-print blouses from Forever 21, and that Jennifer Lopez looks beautiful even in blue eyeshadow, we also have to accept...

Los Angeles -- "American Idol" finalist Naima Adedapo was on the move.
The funky 26-year-old dance instructor from Milwaukee injected African dance choreography into her lively rendition of Martha and the Vandellas' "Dancing in the Street" during the Fox talent competition's Motown-themed performance edition Wednesday. "Idol" judge Jennifer Lopez told Adedapo that her routine gave her the "first little goose bumps of the night."
"You definitely have that little extra something on the stage," praised Lopez.
Other singers who impressed the panel included unemployed 22-year-old rocker James Durbin of Santa Cruz, Calif., and 23-year-old spa concierge Jacob Lusk of Compton, Calif. Durbin wailed Stevie Wonder's "Living for the City," while Lusk belted out Marvin Gaye's "You're All I Need to Get By," which prompted Steven Tyler to rise from the panel for a hug.
"You know what was wrong with that performance?" asked Randy Jackson. "Absolutely nothing."
Some singers continued to misstep.

Wednesday night's (March 23) "American Idol" was Motown themed because nothing says "contemporary artist" like songs that were written half a century ago. That didn't prevent the stars from showing up in droves. Look! There's Jennifer Beals and Liv Tyler! Is that Kirsten Dunst having a gal's night out in the studio audience? And golly! Adam Shankman looks just divine in sweatpants!
The tension was extra-thick Wednesday, and not just because the audience clearly loves Steven Tyler a million times more than Jennifer Lopez. (Awkward!) You see, the top 11 were competing for 10 spots on this summer's "Idol" tour, which is not only a big money maker for the contestants but also an opportunity to be in close contact with stalkers from coast to coast.
Seacrest giddily pointed out that this was the first time Randy Jackson made it through a telecast without using the word "pitchy" but he failed to congratulate...

A solid season of American Idol gave us a hint last night that we could be in for one of the best in the show's history.
The theme of Motown brought out the best in almost every finalist, as it's difficult to even determine the top performer of the night.
Was it James Durbin, who danced around on stage to a Stevie Wonder classic and even crooned directly to bassist Bob Babbitt on stage, earning a wild ovation and praise such as "incredible" and "unbelievable" from the judges?
James Durbin Does Motown
Perhaps it was Jacob Lusk, who told viewers he can only sing songs with "meaning" and proceeded to deliver another soulful rendition, this time of Marvin Gaye's "You're All I Need to Get By." Watch his play with the melody a bit in this performance video:

On Wednesday, March 23, the top 11 finalists of "American Idol" performed some golden oldies to salute Motown. Jacob Lusk wowed the judges with his rendition of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's legendary ballad "You're All I Need to Get By".
Jennifer Lopez enjoyed his performance, singing and dancing on her seat, and she admitted it on her comment, "You made us beg for those notes! ... You move me. You move us." Steven Tyler was more expressive, running up to hug Jacob and scream "hallelujah!" into the mic after the song ended.
Casey Abrams also got a standing ovation after delivering Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine". Steven called him the perfect entertainer for his combination of "perfect pitch and crazy-ass ego," while Randy Jackson praised him as a "true original."
Thia Megia rebounded from a tough week with an uptempo performance of Martha and the Vandellas' "Heat Wave". J.

I honestly have no idea who is going home tomorrow, and I am happier than ever. Unlike the last two weeks, there is no clear indication of who should and will go home. I may have to stalk Dial Idol tomorrow, but I can't give any solid prediction myself.
Before I go into contestants, can I just say that Randy Jackson and Jennifer Lopez (and more so Jennifer) are turning into a real one-two punch of awesome judging lately? I think Jennifer's been more on point, but I'm really digging where they are coming from.
I'm still not a big fan of the professional producers, but there were some glimmers that the contestants are becoming more vocal in what they want.
As to the performances, I'd say they were mostly solid. I'm not sure anyone was a wow for me, but I definitely think some contestants stepped it up (while others,...

Golden oldies were front and center tonight as the American Idol Top 11 tackled songs from the Motown Records vaults. Indeed, not only were the compositions in question two or three times the age of most contestants, but the majority had already been performed (sometimes quite memorably) by previous Idol contestants.
That said, there wasn’t a single train wreck performance in the bunch — a vast improvement over last week’s Songs from the Year You Were Born — setting us up for what’s likely to be the first genuinely suspenseful results show of the Season 10 finals. Check out the full set list below,...

Motown legend Martha Reeves refuses to listen to any modern music because of offensive lyrics, which she blames for promoting "lawlessness" among young people. The "Dancing in the Street" hitmaker, who enjoyed a string of hits with the Vandellas in the 1960s, is convinced negative content in songs causes problems among today's youth.
She says, "As musicians we have concerns about social factors and involve ourselves in community. There's lawlessness in society now because of the content of lyrics - they have somehow slipped past the net. We didn't have to send our children out of the room when we were with Motown. Our songs have always been about love, happiness, joy and partying."
And Reeves is adamant the current crop of chart-topping tracks lack soul because they rely too much on production. She adds, "I'm not listening to any new music because it's not made by musicians. Songs now...

This week! Do people have a right to be obnoxiously gay in public? What famous divas also have singing sisters? What popular songs are really gay duets? More!
Have a question about gay male entertainment or need life advice? Contact me here (and be sure and include your city and state and/or country!)
Q: I am curious about duets by mainstream artists with other men, specifically love songs, and more specifically overtly gay ones — or at least those that could be interpreted as such. I think back to RuPaul and Elton John’s remake of “Don’t Go Breakin’ My Heart” on his Duets album and how excited I was, novelty notwithstanding, that it was a duet between two men. I love the hell out of Robbie Williams because of his “Swing While You’re Winning” tribute album, because it has a straight-up gay duet with Rupert Everett and...

The city's financial problems are no secret. But the former Martha and the Vandellas singer thinks Detroit needs to look to the spirit of 60s music to revive itself
A glut of fatalist headlines and documentaries have recently given outsiders the impression that Detroit is a city with no money and even less hope. The statistics seem to give credence to this notion. Its unemployment rate, at around 30%, is higher than anywhere else in America, and crime, while on the decrease since 2000, still makes Detroit the sixth most violent city in the Us.
For Detroit's older residents, this just feels like history repeating itself. Many talk about the 1960s, the last time the city was struck by economic strife, as if it were only yesterday. But the doom and gloom of foreigners is dismissed by natives, who remind outsiders that it was hope, not help or hyperbole, that got the city out of its depression.

What should the "American Idol" Top 10 sing for the R&B/Soul week? Make your picks here.
Even though Usher kinda spilled the "Idol" mentoring beans over the weekend, it was officially announced during the Wednesday, March 24 results show that he would be mentoring the Top 10 for R&B/Soul week.
We love that R&B/Soul reaches way back into Motown because some of the non-Michael Lynche singers need some oldies thrown in there.

Let me get one thing out of the way first, I love writer/director Richard Curtis, were I not an actual man (chest hair, pot-belly and all) I’d have his babies! Why? Because I love what the man brings to British cinema!
While I may not enjoy all of his films, I love the fact that Curtis can combine a relatively low budget and a largely British cast and generally create something that, while modest, breaks out into mainstream Hollywood!
Here is the man who made Hugh Grant a star, he turned Rhys Ifans into a household name, he brought us Blackadder, Mr. Bean and The Vicar of Dibley! In short, Richard Curtis has probably done more for British film and television worldwide than any other writer or director had dared dream. With Curtis, the humble British Film Industry can stand strong against the trillion dollar behemoth that is the Hollywood machine.
