Chris Stirewalt, the garrulous political analyst, is best known, perhaps, for his tenure at Fox News Channel. He’s ready to make a name for himself in a new venue.
Stirewalt famously spent time on screen defending Fox News early — and eerily accurate — projection during the 2020 presidential election that then-President Donald Trump would lose in Arizona, a key state. By the time President Biden was ready to take his oath of office, Stirewalt had exited the Fox Corp. news unit after a decade-long run, fully prepared to put his TV news career in the rearview mirror.
On Sunday, he will have to look in the cameras once again.
Stirewalt is set to anchor “The Hill Sunday,” a bid by upstart cable-news player NewsNation to insert itself into the Sunday-news field typically dominated by decades-old programs with strong video imprimaturs. The anchor believes viewers still yearn for something that tones...

Marc Short, the former chief of staff to former Vice President Mike Pence and a longtime Republican consultant, has been named a contributor to both NBC News’ “Meet the Press” and CNBC, according to three people familiar with the matter,
Short is expected to appear on “Meet the Press” this Sunday, according to one of these people. He has taken part in the program several times in recent years when not affiliated with an active campaign, turning up as recently as January. Short has typically appeared during the show’s panel section, providing a perspective from the right.
NBC News confirmed Short’s new role on “Meet The Press.”

Donald Trump defended his mental fitness during a campaign rally in South Carolina Wednesday, claiming he was “sarcastic” when confusing Republican rival Nikki Haley with Rep. Nancy Pelosi in January.
“I’s very hard to be sarcastic when I interpose. I’m not a Nicki fan, and I’m not a Pelosi fan. And when I purposely interpose names they said, ‘He didn’t know Pelosi from Nikki, from tricky Nikki,” Trump said when speaking to his crowd of supporters in North Charleston. United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain and former President Donald Trump have gone to war with each other.
Fain stated in an interview he gave on Face the Nation explaining why the union endorsed Joe Biden over Trump.
“Look, when you look at these two candidates, you know, Joe Biden has a history of serving others, and serving the working class, and fighting for the working class, standing with the working class,” the Uaw president stated. “Donald Trump has a history of serving himself and standing for the billionaire class. And that’s contrary to everything that working class people stand for.”
Trump responded to what Fain said during this interview by attacking him in a Truth Social post.

As former President Donald Trump openly condemns the Senate’s border legislation, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) told colleagues Saturday he won’t consider a border deal anytime soon. But does that mean Trump is calling the shots?
“Of course not. He’s not calling the shots. I am calling the shots for the House, that’s our responsibility,” Johnson told NBC’s “Meet the Press” host Kristen Welker on Sunday.

Former Vice President Mike Pence said during a pro-life summit that he wants the abortion pill, known as Mifepristone, to be taken off the market immediately.
Pence appeared at the Students for Life of America (Sfla) National Pro-Life Summit this month.
He sat down for a Q&a with Sfla President Kristan Hawkins at the beginning of the event.
Pence was asked what a pro-life president should initially do if elected in 2024.
“I think that our new president should direct the new attorney general to suspend all efforts to harass pro-life activists in America,” Pence said. “And frankly I think they should pull the abortion pill off the market.”
“I believe those are two urgent causes and I think we have to step forward and make that happen on day one,” Pence said.

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-West Virginia), who represents one of the reddest states, said he would not be voting for former President Donald Trump.
Although Manchin, a conservative Democrat, has opened up about his concerns about his party candidates and leadership, he said he loves this “country too much to vote for Donald Trump.”
When asked about his reservations about President Joe Biden on Face The Nation, he directly called out Trump.
“Constructive criticism,” he said. “Let me make it very clear: I love my country too much to vote for Donald Trump. I love my country too much, and I think [it] would be very detrimental to my country.”
By Super Tuesday, when the greatest number of primary elections and caucuses is held across the country, Manchin claimed he’d better understand the 2024 presidential race.
Instead of just examining the Democratic and Republican parties, Manchin is looking at third-party candidates who have the opportunity to run.

Nikki Haley said last week that New Hampshire voters would have an opportunity to “correct” the results of the Iowa caucuses when they headed to the polls Tuesday. Whether they did depends on Haley’s definition of a course correction. Trump secured a solid — although not a total landslide — victory in the Granite State, further thinning the former South Carolina governor’s already-long odds of unseating the former president atop the Republican Party.

Donald Trump returned to New Hampshire on Monday evening, once again hellbent on flexing his ability to identify shapes and sounds.
After bragging last week that he “aced” his cognitive test after correctly naming a giraffe, tiger, and whale, the former president spoke to a crowd of supporters in Laconia, New Hampshire — his last rally before the state’s Republican primary.
Amid a disjointed rant referencing the scrapped Reagan administration’s Strategic Defense Initiative that was popularly known as ”Star Wars,” Trump began to describe his own supposed plans for a U.

With Ron DeSantis conveniently out of the GOP primary race, Donald Trump set his sights on Nikki Haley, his nearest opponent who still trails him by double-digits in the polls. The former South Carolina governor and Trump cabinet member has recently questioned the former president’s mental fitness after he confused her name with Nancy Pelosi’s at a rally.
“Here in New Hampshire, Nikki Haley has made an unholy alliance with RINOs, Never Trumpers, Americans for No Prosperity,” Trump said, referring to Americans for Prosperity, a conservative group that endorsed Haley in December.

Despite his repeated bragging that he “aced” a cognitive test while in office, many have questioned Trump’s mental fitness to be president in recent days. His opponent, former Trump cabinet member Nikki Haley, is making political hay out of his recent flub where he confused her with former House speaker Nancy Pelosi.
“Don’t be surprised if you have someone that is 80 in office, their mental stability is going to continue to decline. That’s just human nature,” the former South Carolina governor said Sunday on Face the Nation.

Sunday morning is made for politics, and Nexstar Media Group’s NewsNation wants in on the action.
Starting in March, NewsNation will produce and air a new Sunday morning political talk show, hosted by the channels’ political editor Chris Stirewalt.
The show will “feature a variety of politicians and newsmakers discussing the latest political news from the nation’s capital,” as well as a panel of “guest commentators offering insight and analysis of the week’s key stories,” according to a press release issued on Thursday.
As described, the show appears to resemble similar fare on the major broadcast and cable channels — NBC’s “Meet the Press,” ABC’s “This Week,” CBS’ “Face the Nation,” “Fox News Sunday” and CNN’s “State of the Union.”
“We are delighted that Chris will be joining the new weekend lineup,” Michael Corn, the President of News at NewsNation, said in a statement.

Launch of the program comes as NewsNation has been seeking to expand its programming to weekends after spending the bulk of its time devising a weekday schedule.

Kristen Welker wants to “Meet The Press” with something new.
So the new Sunday-show moderator is introducing a different sort of recurring segment to NBC’s venerable public affairs program. “Meet The Moment” will feature conversations with influentials from outside the usual Beltway haunts, who will still weigh in on issues of importance to voters and the long-running show’s overall audience. Among those who have appeared: Olympic gold medalist Allyson Felix, who discussed Black maternal health; actor Selma Blair, who has become an advocate for fair disability pay after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis; author and The Atlantic staff writer Tim Alberta, who has scrutinized changes in the Evangelical church; and Iranian activist Masih Alinejad, who has pushed for women’s rights in Iran.

CBS News will launch a fact-checking unit to examine misinformation and content generated via artificial intelligence, the network announced Monday.
The unit will be called “CBS News Confirmed” and will be led by senior vice president for CBS News and Stations Claudia Milne, and executive vice president and head of news operations and transformation for CBS News and Stations Ross Dagan.
“Technology is changing at an unprecedented pace. And the challenges created by the rise of generative AI, fake videos, and misinformation are too great for us not to meet head-on,” said CEO of CBS News Wendy McMahon in a memo to staff.
“I’m grateful to our leadership team who has committed to this effort and is always looking to protect and ensure our journalistic credibility,” McMahon said.
The goal of the new unit is to produce segments on its findings while explaining to viewers how the information was determined to be falsified.

A former producer on “60 Minutes” is suing CBS, CBS News and parent company Paramount Global for gender discrimination, claiming that she was wrongfully terminated from the newsmagazine program.
In a complaint obtained by Variety, which was filed on Tuesday in New York federal court, producer Alexandra Poolos says the network fired her after she was falsely accused of bullying an associate producer she supervised. Poolos indicates discrepancies in how her firing was handled by the company compared to several male producers and editors of “60 Minutes” who’ve allegedly been the subject of multiple sexual harassment complaints.
“Sexism and misogyny defined the workplace of CBS, including CBS News, over many years,” according to the complaint. Poolos cites sexual misconduct and harassment claims against former CBS chairman Leslie Moonves, ex-network anchor Charlie Rose and former “60 Minutes” executive producers Don Hewitt and Jeff Fager, as well as several other current producers on the program.

Update: Kevin McCarthy spoke to reporters for nearly 50 minutes, in which he at first tried to strike a tone of gratitude and positivity about his tenure but then got into some score setting of the eight members who voted to oust him.
He said that they are not conservative but “angry and chaotic.” Of Rep. Nancy Mace (R-Sc), he said, “is a whole other story,” suggesting that she is lying when she says that he hasn’t kept his word.

While Rep. Mike Turner (R-oh) said definitively Sunday that he “will bet on Kevin McCarthy any day” amid the Republican House Speaker’s struggle to wrangle enough votes from his party to fund the federal government and stave off a government shutdown next month, one of Turner’s colleagues took a different approach.
“I wouldn’t bet on Kevin McCarthy,” Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-tx) said on CBS Face the Nation, “but I also wouldn’t bet against him.”

Chris Christie was for Donald Trump before he was against him. The former New Jersey governor stood by Donald Trump through scandal and controversy, and on Sunday the Republican candidate was confronted with his support of the former president, who he now opposes.

Kristen Welker’s tenure at NBC News’ venerable “Meet The Press” won’t start until September 17, but the network isn’t waiting to tell viewers about it.
On Saturday, during the NBC News journalist’s last time co-anchoring the Saturday broadcast of “Today” with Peter Alexander, those who tune in will see a new promo alerting them to Welker’s imminent move. The video vignette displays Welker moments from across her recent career: in the White House briefing room covering three presidents; on the campaign trail; and moderating one of the 2020 presidential debates. The promo will also feature footage from Welker’s fill-in appearances at the “Meet the Press” desk.
When Welker takes the reins of the program from Chuck Todd, she will become the series’ 13th moderator, but just the first Black journalist to moderate the show, and just the second woman. In an interview earlier this week with Wtmj,...

The headlines coming out of CBS News will soon be guided by a new executive.
Neeraj Khemlani, who arrived at the Paramount Global unit in 2021 to oversee CBS News and local stations along with Wendy McMahon, is leaving his role running the unit that produces “60 Minutes,” “CBS Evening News” and “Face The Nation,” among other programs. Khemlani told CBS News staffers Sunday that he has decided to exit and will instead pursue a new multi-year first-look deal with CBS that has him developing content including books for Simon & Schuster, documentaries and scripted series.
Many senior news executives and anchors sign contracts for three years or more. Khemlani has during a two-years-plus tenure helped to rework CBS News’ morning programming; eliminate divisions between the linear news staff and CBS News streaming operations; bolster its investigative unit; and inject new talent into the famously insular division, including Robert Costa, Natalie Morales and Cecilia Vega.

I recently discovered my pioneer producer great-grandfather Sol M. Wurtzel’s obituary in the April 16, 1958 edition of Variety. In 1917, mogul William Fox sent Sol to oversee production at his Hollywood studio. During his lengthy career as a Fox Studio head, Sol produced over 700 films.
One short paragraph blew my mind. “In 1933, when his [Fox Studio] Western Avenue lot was threatened with a three-month shuttering, Wurtzel went to bat for his staff, refusing to take anyone off salary. The studio remained open, and costs were charged to his later productions.” Wow, exactly 90 years ago, a studio executive cared enough about his employees to keep them on payroll.
During the height of the Great Depression, my great-grandfather bet the house, so his employees had money to cover rent, put food on the table and pay their medical bills. A hardcore gambler, he risked his own career and financial future.

Barry Diller, chairman and senior executive of Iac and Expedia Group and former Hollywood studio chief, says that top executives and the highest-paid stars should take a 25 percent pay cut to narrow the gap between their salaries and those of the folks at the lower end of the pay scale.
“There’s no trust,” he said in an interview that aired Sunday on CBS’ Face the Nation. “You have the actors union saying, ‘How dare these 10 people who run these companies earn all this money and won’t pay us?’ While, if you look at it on the other side, the top 10 actors get paid more than the top 10 executives. I’m not saying either is right. Actually, everybody’s probably overpaid at the top end.”

Barry Diller, the former head of ABC, Fox Broadcasting Company, and Paramount and current Chairman and Senior Executive, Iac and Expedia Group, stirred the pot during an appearance Sunday on CBS talk show “Face the Nation.”
Diller had several suggestions on Hollywood for host Margaret Brennan, and comments that are bound to be controversial.
Among them:
*** As a good-faith measure, Diller said the executives and the “most-paid” actors should take a 25% pay cut to try and narrow the difference between those who get highly paid and those that don’t.
*** He suggested a Sept. 1 strike settlements deadline. Otherwise, “next year, there’s not going to be many programs for anybody to watch. So, you’re going to see subscriptions get pulled, which is going to reduce the revenue of all these movie companies, television companies, the result of which is that there will be no programs.”

CBS News is expanding its podcast profile, giving the green light to a new series exploring the story of Robert Hanssen, the FBI agent who infamously leaked sensitive information to Russia for more than two decades.
The still-untitled eight episode series from CBS and Paramount Audio will debut in the fall, and is led by CBS News chief Washington correspondent Major Garrett, who also hosts the weekly podcast The Takeout.
“How does the nation handle its most sensitive secrets? It’s a question we’ve wrestled with for decades but is especially relevant today,” Garrett says. “Everything about Robert Hanssen fascinates me — how he escaped detection for 22 years, the depth of his betrayals, how he was caught and, most elusive of all, why he did it. Chasing these answers has taken two years and I can’t wait to share this extraordinary story with our listeners.”

Margaret Brennan recently was among a small number of reporters who traveled with Secretary of State Antony Blinken to China, a trip designed to turn down the temperature on simmering tensions with Beijing.
That was reflected in what it took for the Face the Nation moderator and CBS News chief foreign affairs correspondent to secure a visa for the trip, “Until I had that in hand, I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to get on the Secretary of State’s plane,” she said, adding that she had permission to be in the country just seven days.

The winners of this year’s recipients of the Walter Cronkite Awards had a common theme: Combating misinformation.
So when award sponsor USC Annenberg’s Norman Lear Center held a National Press Club luncheon for the honorees last week, there was a bit of reminder of the stakes: During the ceremony news unfolded of the unsealing of former President Donald Trump’s federal indictment.
Many of the winners reported on Trump and his false claims of a stolen 2020 election, something that he has repeated during his current election campaign. He’s also called the indictment itself the “boxes hoax.”
Martin Kaplan, director of The Norman Lear Center, said, “Disinformation is an apt focus in particular for the Cronkite award, not only because it feels like disinformation is everywhere all at once, but because the namesake of this award is Walter Cronkite” who was known as “the most trusted man in America.

Todd has moderated the program since September 2014.
There already was speculation that there would be a change on the show, after David P. Gelles was hired as executive producer last year, succeeding John Reiss.
Todd said at the end of the show on Sunday, “It’s been an amazing nearly decade long run. I am really proud of what this team and I have built over the last decade. Todd said that “the key to the survival of any of these media entities, including here at Meet the Press, is for leaders to not overstay their welcome.

Washington journalism veteran Dana Bash will take over CNN’s weekday broadcast of “Inside Politics,” giving the network mainstay her first weekday anchoring assignment in nearly three decades at the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed network.
Bash will take over the program from John King, whose facility with a digital technology known as CNN’s “Magic Wall” that is used heavily during election coverage has expanded his overall profile. King will lead a new reporting project focused on voters in key battleground states as the 2024 presidential campaign cycle gets underway.
Bash will continue as co-anchor of the Sunday political talk program “State of the Union,” along with Jake Tapper. King is expected to continue to play a significant role in CNN’s coverage of elections.
Placing her at the noontime program is the latest maneuver in a wholesale reworking of the bulk of CNN’s daytime schedule under CEO Chris Licht.
