For fans of sci-fi, fantasy, and supernatural TV, the question looms: where did all the great genre programming go?
From the syndicated adventures of Xena: Warrior Princess to the small-town charm of Eureka, from the gripping mysteries of The X-Files to the sprawling vampire tales of The Vampire Diaries, genre TV once ruled the airwaves.
Fans loved to escape reality with thrilling tales and cherished characters that reached cultural icon status. Yet, as we wade through the 2020s, finding similar shows has become like searching for a needle in a haystack. What happened?

Quick Links What Was The Beastmaster About? How Does Kraven the Hunter Relate to The Beastmaster?
The following contains spoilers for Kraven the Hunter, now playing in theaters.
With J.C. Chandor's Kraven the Hunter and other Sony Marvel movies, many expect homages to the Spider-Man films, or the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. However, Kraven the Hunter draws energy from another surprising franchise:The Beastmaster, which began in the 1980s.
This medieval-mystical fantasy story didn't do big numbers at the box office, nor did it win over critics. But as the decades passed, the franchise developed a cult following. Coincidentally, Aaron Johnson-Taylor's Kraven has abilities very similar to the protagonist from that property. Not to mention, his mission and overall ethos have parallels to what The Beastmaster presented.

It's hard to recommend the "Terrifier" films, seeing that they are the most violent, disgusting, and morally loathsome horror movies on the current cinematic landscape. But it's easy to warn people about them, and for the right breed of horror fan to take that warning as all the recommendation they need. God help me: I've become an Art the Clown fan, and each new entry in this ludicrously violent slasher series keeps finding new ways to test what I find acceptable in my entertainment.
"Terrifier 3" picks up the baton from its nasty, nightmarish predecessor and sprints with it. Like the surprise hit "Terrifier 2," the new movie is a nauseating experience where every death scene is masterclass in practical special effects wizardry. But also like the second movie, there's an eerie tinge of fantasy throughout the whole thing that makes it all feel like a weird dream to the viewer.

The "Terrifier" franchise is known for its stomach-churning gore and impressive low-budget effects, but the most surprising aspect of Damien Leone's films isn't the horror –- it's the fantasy. The property, which began in 2016 and continues this month with its third blood-soaked installment, has incorporated elements of the surreal and fantastical since pretty early on. At the end of the first film, Art the killer clown (David Howard Thornton) comes back to life, and in the second movie, a mystical sword, visions of a little girl, and an unholy birth all come into play.
These fantasy elements make the "Terrifier" franchise feel more ambitious and mysterious than the average hyper-violent slasher, but they often don't get talked about as much as the movies' headline-grabbing, barf-inducing kills. In an interview ahead of the "Terrifier 3" premiere at Fantastic Fest this year, /Film's Jacob Hall asked writer, director, and producer Leone about his '80s influences,...

Among the twelve basic classes in Dungeons & Dragons, the ranger has always been viewed as one of the weakest options. Part of this reputation comes from its lackluster first-level abilities and the slow progression it gets per level in the original rules. Another part of it comes from the two subclasses the ranger could choose from in the 2014 Player's Handbook: the hunter and the beastmaster.
While the hunter is a somewhat effective but bland choice, the beastmaster attracted many new players with the idea of working side by side with an animal companion. It's a common fantasy trope, and for a good reason, since it is a fun and versatile character option in theory. Only the 2014 beastmaster was plagued with inefficiencies and mechanical downsides that made the subclass a common choice for the weakest option in the Ttprg. It has needed official improvements for years, and with the new 2024 Player's Handbook,...

It wasn’t mentioned in any of the film’s publicity, but Agent Recon is the third film in a trilogy that began in 2017 with Agent Intelligence and continued with Agent Revelation in 2021. That’s understandable, considering the first film was so unmemorable I forgot I’d seen it until I saw the second film’s flashback scenes. Final Fantasy Xiv's upcoming Dawntrail expansion will introduce two new jobs. Viper is a dual-wield melee Dps, while Pictomancer is a ranged magical Dps. There will even be a third Job, but details are limited for now.
There are new jobs being added to Final Fantasy Xiv with the introduction of the Dawntrail expansion, expected to arrive in mid-2024. The fifth expansion to the world of the popular Mmorpg will continue the story of the Warrior of Light and their allies after the conclusion of the Light and Darkness saga that occurred during the story of Endwalker. Instead of fighting a life-menacing threat, however, players will embark on something of a summertime vacation in the previously unexplored region of Tural. There, they will partake in a ceremonial contest that will determine the new leader of the region.
This will all be set on new maps, that will be open for players to explore freely.

Writer/director Damien Leone has promised that Terrifier 3 will address two major criticisms of the 2022 sequel, focusing on the length of the film and the supernatural elements present. Leone acknowledges that he is aiming to keep Terrifier 3 under two hours, as he understands that asking viewers to sit through a film longer than two hours is a lot, especially for a slasher film. While he plans to bring back the gritty grindhouse feel of the original Terrifier, Leone also hints that elements of the supernatural will still be included, as they are crucial to the story and Sienna's character's mythology.
Though a critical and commercial hit, writer/director Damien Leone promises Terrifier 3 will fix one of the first sequel's biggest complaints. The 2024 movie will mark the third installment in the Art the Clown-focused horror franchise, picking up from the 2022 sequel that introduced new heroine Sienna and...

The best fantasy series offer a wide range of tones and can cater to a variety of audiences, with elements like swords, sorcery, beat cops, and even animated fantasy. Creative fantasy shows that don't have supernatural love triangles or established fanbases often get overlooked, despite exploring complex issues and featuring engaging characters. There are many underrated fantasy shows that are equally deserving of viewership, such as Lockwood & Co., Willow, BeastMaster, and The Adventures of Merlin, which offer thrilling adventures and captivating storytelling.
While some fantasy shows have made it to mainstream success, others are just as good but more underrated. The best fantasy series are incredibly versatile in terms of their tone and the audiences they can reach. The team over at Hex Studios is on a mission to “build a British horror & fantasy studio inspired by companies like Cannon, Hammer, and Aip,” and this week they’ve unleashed the official poster art for one of their projects. It’s titled The Slave & The Sorcerer, said to be a “practical-effects-laden sword & sorcery adventure” ripped straight out of the 1980s.
“Inspired by cult classics such as Deathstalker, The Beastmaster, and The Sword and the Sorcerer, the action-packed horror-fantasy is brimming with muscle-bound heroes, seductive sorceresses, and iconic villains true to the era. One reason that "Batman: The Animated Series" was and remains so beloved was how it embraced case-of-the-week storytelling. This was perfect for showcasing all the different corners and characters that make up the wild world of Gotham City. Such a large cast of characters meant that the series brought in a lot of actors; voice director Andrea Romano sought actors of all stripes for parts big and small. On the Popcorn & Shield podcast, the late Kevin Conroy (the voice of Batman) described the casting process as thus:
"They were really looking for actors, rather than just voice people. They cast a really wide net. So there were TV people, film people, stage people. Every week going in it was like going to summer camp, the people I got to work with."
Series co-creator Bruce Timm, also being interviewed, agreed with Conroy's sentiment. "Every week there was always some special, you know,...

Big things abound for Dungeons & Dragons in 2023. According to ComicBook.com, the popular RPG company Wizards of the Coast is poised to release five new D&d sourcebooks this year, including The Book of Many Things, which will focus specifically on subclasses and spells.
Many players will be on the lookout for new Ranger subclasses. A fan-favorite class in past generations, the base Ranger class in the game's current, fifth edition Player's Handbook is notoriously underpowered. However, certain subclasses that have been added to 5e over the years make rangers much more formidable.

As formidable as it sounds, the Beast Master Ranger subclass leaves a lot to be desired in terms of raw power. Some critics believe that “cult movies” no longer exist. After all, how do you define an underground cult following in an age when independent films are more easily accessible than ever and you can instantly discuss movies with anyone in the world? It’s now possible to stream nearly any picture at the touch of a button, so it makes sense that the days of underground screenings and traditional word-of-mouth are long behind us.
That being said, there’s an argument to be made about a modern-day equivalent to the cult classic. The fickle tides of online engagement mean that some truly great media often slips through the cracks of the distribution system, resulting in notable works of art becoming lost in online limbo because they didn’t please the all-knowing algorithm or were just released at the wrong place and the wrong time. Hell, some of these movies can...

With the recent release of the trailer for The Last Of Us series on HBO Max, fans are incredibly excited to see how Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey bring Joe and Ellie to life, respectively. The game is highly regarded for its mature story and memorable characters, including several that are members of the LGBTQ+ community.
Ellie, in particular, was a landmark character as the first explicitly LGBTQ protagonist in a Aaa video game, which was directly confirmed in the 2014 Dlc "Left Behind." However, she certainly wasn't the last, and the medium of video games today has a much more respectably diverse array of protagonists in their stories.
Tyler From Tell Me Why
Tyler Ronan was the point of much discussion when Tell Me Why was released. Tyler is a trans man, and it's refreshing that his identity is merely part of who he is instead of a plot point or wholly-defining feature.

Forget the divide between baby boomers, Generation X, and millennials, our society can most easily be divided into those who are old enough to have seen Don Coscarelli’s 1982 sword and sorcery masterpiece The Beastmaster roughly one hundred times on HBO (or maybe TBS if you’re slightly younger) and those who have not. If you haven’t seen it, get thee to Amazon Prime in the US, where you can currently watch one of the best fantasy flicks of its era for free.

"Today is the 38th anniversary of The Beastmaster with good news and bad news. The good first: My Beastmaster co-writer Paul Pepperman and I have reclaimed the copyright to our screenplay. The Beastmaster remake anyone?"
This news unfortunately came with some bad news as well. The Beastmaster filmmakers are reaching out to fans for help as the original camera negative (Ocn) of the film has been lost. Hundreds of actors, artists, craftspeople and technicians put years of effort into the production of The Beastmaster and the resulting film has spawned a generation of fans worldwide. It boggles the mind that the negative to a...

Looking for some hands-on first impressions of Borderlands 3? Check out our gameplay preview...
If there’s one thing that Borderlands has always offered those who love first-person shooters, it’s a wacky, often chaotic version of the genre that's a far cry from its oh-so-serious peers. Den of Geek’s recent preview of two different Borderlands 3 demos held at 2K’s Windsor offices did much to reinforce this tact, depicting a return to the cell-shaded landscapes we first fell in love with 10 years ago, a new line-up of quirky Vault Hunters to explore them with, as well as enough guns to potentially sink a planet.
The final version of Borderlands 3 won’t release until September, but from what we played in these two demos, it’s already clear that both longtime fans and series newcomers will be in for a wild ride.

Rip Torn, who played characters from Judas Iscariot to the producer on The Larry Sanders Show, dies at 88.
Respected and versatile character actor Rip Torn died Tuesday in Lakeville, Conn., according to Variety. Publicist Rick Miramontez did not release a cause of death, but said Torn was with his wife, Amy Wright, and two daughters, Katie and Angelica. He was 88.
Torn believed actors should “play drama as comedy and comedy as drama,” according to the statement, and the actor was equally at home both. He starred in comedies like Albert Brooks' Defending Your Life and the Men in Black films, as well as TV comedies 30 Rock, playing General Electric CEO Don Geiss, mentor to Alec Baldwin’s Jack Donaghy, and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Bruce Willis confirmed just this past February that Die Hard 6 is definitely still happening. Now the project is chugging forward at a faster rate, with 20th Century Fox bringing on new writers. The studio has hired Chad Hayes and Carey Hayes, the sibling scribe team best known for their work on The Conjuring franchise. They will rewrite the Die Hard 6 script. Len Wiseman is still attached to direct this action sequel, and also serve as a producer alongside Lorenzo di Bonaventura.
Die Hard 6 will bring back Bruce Willis, reprising his iconic role as New York cop John McClane, but the story will actually focus on a much younger John McClane as a NYPD cop in the 1970s. Bruce Willis is expected to appear in present-day scenes that will bookend the movie, that will shift back and forth between present-day and the 1970s. Moving can be a real pain. Finding that perfect house can be an even bigger inconvenience. Well, if I ever had any sort of informal education from horror movies, I’ve learned two fundamental truths. There’s gonna be trouble if hooking up with a beautiful woman is effortlessly easy, or if you run across a seemingly sweet real estate property at a ridiculously low price. I’ll go a bit further and say that said real estate property is probably going to be a murder house inhabited by a vengeful spirit with some serious emotional baggage. I would almost bet the farm on it.

Would we have had Mutant Enemy or Bad Robot without Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell and Robert Tapert's Renaissance Pictures? David thinks not...
After 1992's Army Of Darkness, another Sam Raimi feature film wouldn't emerge in theatres for another three years. What Raimi did with the time in between is anybody's guess - perhaps he wandered the world; maybe he dug through a peculiar collection of Spider-Man comics with most of the dialogue cut out. But what he certainly did with his Renaissance Pictures partners was bring to light a new frontier of genre TV (cue heroic music and a narrator saying, "This is the story of a time long ago – a time of myth and legend. When the ancient gods were petty and cruel, and they plagued mankind with suffering, only one man dared to challenge their power...")

This week has seen some progress in video game adaptations Splinter Cell, which landed Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises) in a lead role, and Deus Ex, which will be written and directed by Scott Derrickson (Sinister). While it appears the Hollywood Adaptation machine for new movies is still running strong (for better or worse), sometimes an old property deserves to be revisited, refreshed and rebooted. Today's suggestion first graced the screens thirty years ago and spawned two (terrible) sequels, a TV series and a cult following. An early work from director Don Coscarelli (Phantasm), this swords-and-sandals picture was a very loose adaptation of a book series from award-winning author, Andre Norton. Hit the jump to see why there's more to this property than you might think. Hollywood! Adapt this: The Beastmaster. While The Beastmaster wasn't exactly a critical darling (currently at 50% on Rotten Tomatoes), it has established a cult...

Welcome to Pajiba's newest experiment. Something we've never attempted before -- a real-time review, done by two people 3000 miles away from each other. For tonight's feature, we'll be discussing the 1982 classic, The Beastmaster, otherwise known as "The Best Fucking Movie Ever." Your hosts this evening are Tk, most well-known for his irritability, misanthropy, general disdain for all humans (yes, including you) and burgeoning alcoholism, and Joanna, best known for general cleverness, a dedication to witticism, and burgeoning alcoholism. It’s not everyday you get to speak to a living legend like Marc Singer. The former BeastMaster star was at WonderCon this past weekend, showing his support for the V reboot and talking about his role as Lars Tremont.
Singer graciously shared with us his thoughts on ABC’s V, how he thinks Elizabeth Mitchell is doing as the Fifth Column ringleader and his prospects for coming back to the show should it be renewed for a third season. During WonderCon 2011 this past weekend, we had the pleasure of speaking with self-professed sci-fi geek Elizabeth Mitchell (Lost), who was on hand with legend Marc Singer (BeastMaster, Original V Series) and Executive Producer Scott Rosenbaum to talk about V.
Of course, V is currently in renewal limbo, so Elizabeth was there to pump up fans and make sure that a third season does happen. She talked to us about that wild Season 2 finale, her thoughts on Season 3 and just how her character Erica will react to Anna’s latest victory. Wondering where Hobbes went? She also dishes on her thoughts on what happened to the treacherous mercenary. Finally, she gives us her idea on how the whole show should end.
Fans will find out if V is renewed once the ABC Upfront Presentations happen in May. Stay tuned here for more info.

A couple of weekends ago, after a vigorous night of drinking and carrying on, I found myself idly scanning the cable channels, looking for something to help me fall asleep before the spinning walls caught up with me. I flipped past the abominable 1987 adaptation, Masters Of The Universe, and then flipped back to it, because I'd completely forgotten about it. The movie had been on for 20 minutes. I watched the entire remainder of it, fascinated and strangely enjoying myself.

TV Guide is reporting that Jane Badler will join V in a Season 2 run as evil Diana for the entire 10-episode season, which premieres January 4 on ABC. Badler tells ‘the guide’ that she’ll be baring her teeth and drawing blood soon after she debuts. The excitement just keeps on building, as Marc Singer will be returning to the franchise in the new series as well.
A show source tells TV Guide exclusively that Marc, who played freedom fighter Mike Donovan in the ’80s version, will be playing a new character named Lars Tremont. Lars is a member of a super top secret organization comprised of high-ranking military and government leaders from around the globe, who have long suspected that the Visitors — despite what they tell us — are very much not here in peace.
It’s nice to see Badler and the Beastmaster back in action. Badler will make her debut in the Jan.

Marc Singer. The man. The actor. The legend.
As a kid watching the original V, even I knew that Marc Singer wasn't the best actor that the world had seen. The guy had a tendency to stand on his side and pivot around, plus he seemed to squint an awful lot. But he made a good sci-fi TV hero, and an even better Beastmaster, so he gets a pass from me.
As for ABC's new V, I've found it pretty dry and dull -- which is why the only good news that has gotten me interested in the show's second season is the return of a few cast members from the original V.
