Tupac Shakur was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame on Wednesday.
Shakur is remembered as an iconic American rapper. He was just 25 years old when he was shot at a red light while driving in Las Vegas. He spent six days in the hospital before he succumbed to his injuries. It is still unknown who murdered him.
Shakur’s sister, Sekyiwa ‘Set’ Shakur, accepted the star on behalf of her brother at the ceremony. Other guests will be there to honor the rapper, including Big Boy, a radio personality on iHeart Radio, Jamal Joseph and Allen Hughes.
Hughes has directed the movies Menace II Society, The Book of Eli, Broken City, Dead Presidents, From Hell, American Pimp and many more. He directed the movie Tupac: Resurrection in 2003, which was about the life of Shakur.
Joseph is an author and director who currently works at Columbia University.

Director Allen Hughes has evolved into a deft and imaginative documentarian, just the latest pleasant surprise in a long, eclectic career. His best-known films are the scripted fare he co-directed with his twin brother Albert, including “Menace II Society” and “Dead Presidents,” which dove deep into the lives of young, disaffected Black men. The brothers dabbled in documentary with 1999’s “American Pimp,” another film about Black men thriving in a brutal subculture, but the film’s insights were mostly washed out by its prurience.
Since then, the Hugheses have pursued solo projects, but Allen found new traction with “The Defiant Ones,” the HBO docuseries chronicling the durable and fruitful partnership between Dr. Dre and Interscope Records founder Jimmy Iovine. The brilliance of that show, which earned a Grammy and five Emmy nods, was in its format and structure. Hughes plots the key points of their professional and personal journeys, from...

In his first major foray into television, filmmaker Albert Hughes has signed on to executive produce and direct multiple episodes of Showtime limited series The Good Lord Bird, starring Ethan Hawke.
The Good Lord Bird, based on James McBride’s 2013 novel, is told from the point of view of Onion, an enslaved teenager who becomes a member in Brown’s motley family during the time of Bleeding Kansas, eventually participating in the famous 1859 raid on the Army depot at Harpers Ferry. Brown’s raid failed to initiate the slave revolt he intended, but was the instigating event that started the Civil War.
Hawke stars as 19th-century abolitionist John Brown and is co-writing and executive producing with Mark Richard.

The Eyes of Laura Mars (1978) was an unpopular thriller with a clever premise. Laura would have visions whenever a killer attacked someone, and she witnessed the murders through his eyes. Naturally, TV had to take a crack at the premise, which brought us Mind Over Murder (1979), a thriller that adds a few wrinkles to the basic premise and ends up being the more enjoyable of the two.
Originally airing on October 23rd as part of The CBS Tuesday Night Movies, Mind Over Murder bore down against NBC Tuesday Night at the Movies and ABC’s Three’s Company/Taxi/Hart to Hart lineup. Not hard to tell where the majority of viewers planted their eyeballs this night, but those who stayed with “the eye” were treated to a mostly effective thriller with some genuinely unsettling moments. You shouldn’t have too much Tripper in your diet, after all.

“The #1 movie in America was called Ass. And that’s all it was for 90 minutes. It won eight Oscars that year, including best screenplay.”
Idiocracy plays this weekend (April 14th and 15th) at the Tivoli as part of their Reel Late at the Tivoli Midnight series.
In Mike Judge’s utterly rude, crude, and politically incorrect 2006 yarn Idiocracy the U.S. Army selects a thoroughly average Army private, Joe Bauers (Luke Wilson) for their top-secret Human Hibernation Project, because he is thoroughly average. Since the U.S. Army couldn’t find anybody in their ranks to fill the female slot, they have selected a hooker, Rita (Maya Randolph), from an African-American pimp named Upgrayedd (the extra ‘d’ stands for “double dose”). Joe and Rita are put into suspended animation for only one year as a part of the experiment, but an accident occurs and they wind up being suspended for 500 years!

Did you guys know there are now six Kickboxer movies? The 'remake', Kickboxer: Vengeance is released in the UK today. But here's our look back at the first five films...
Kickboxer is my favourite Jean-Claude Van Damme film. It may not be his best film, but it is my favourite. It’s a film I used to watch a lot as a kid and one that’s a great deal of fun to revisit.
Kickboxing champion Eric Sloane (Dennis Alexio) is tired of thrashing the competition in the Us. The best fighters, he’s told, are competing in Thailand. Eric packs up his championship belt, his gloves, his gentleman’s moustache and corner-man/brother Kurt (Jean-Claude Van Damme) and heads over to Bangkok in hope of a decent bout of fisticuffs.

Allen Hughes spent the past two decades as one-half of The Hughes Brothers. He makes his solo feature directing debut with Broken City, a political corruption drama that stars Mark Wahlberg as an ex-cop who does a favor for the mayor (Russell Crowe) by following the pol’s philandering wife (Catherine Zeta-Jones). The results are murder and conspiracy, with Fox releasing the Emmett/Furla Films-financed drama January 18. Allen and Albert Hughes burst on the feature scene with 1993’s Menace II Society, a wildly profitable slice of violent inner-city life. Together they’ve co-directed the Vietnam-era crime drama Dead Presidents, the Jack the Ripper thriller From Hell, the documentary American Pimp, and most recently the post-apocalyptic thriller The Book Of Eli. They also direct commercials and videos under their Underworld banner. I’ve known the siblings for about as long as they’ve been making features, and always found them to be strong individuals.

Michael Feinstein. The American Pimp. A singer. A songwriter. A pianist. A penis-enthusiast. He traverses the world in a private jet, his trusty entourage beside him, on a mission to bring antiquated music to all who think they care. He also hosts Michael Feinstein's American Songbook on PBS. Half Jerome Kern, half Jay-z, Feinstein takes viewers on a meandering trip through American popular music, and gets surprisingly lost along the way.

Today in history… August 31, 1888… the body of Mary Ann Nichols, a woman believed to be the legendary/mythical Jack The Ripper’s first victim is found in London’s East End. Her throat was severed deeply by two cuts, and the lower part of the abdomen was partly ripped open by a deep, jagged wound. Several other incisions on the abdomen were caused by the same knife.
Since then, Jack The Ripper has been fodder for lots of fictional tales – from music, to books, to comics, to TV shows, and of course, movies! The most memorable for a lot of you likely being From Hell, which was directed by, the Hughes Brothers – Albert Hughes and Allen Hughes – their 4th film after Menace II Society, Dead Presidents, and American Pimp.
In short, I’d say From Hell was a visually-impressive, well-acted film, but ultimately not all that thrilling, given its subject matter.

Director Peter Bogdanovich.
Interviewing Peter Bogdanovich for the April 2002 issue of Venice Magazine was a thrill for me. Like Francis Coppola, John Frankenheimer, and William Friedkin before him, Bogdanovich was one of those filmmakers whose one-sheets hung on my bedroom walls growing up. Plus the fact that he himself had a renowned career as a film historian and interviewer of his own childhood heroes, such as John Ford, Howard Hawks, Orson Welles, and dozens of others, made our talk a real feast.
Not long after the article was printed, I received a letter with a New York City postmark. The note enclosed said simply: “Dear Alex, thanks for doing your homework so well, and thanks for the good vibes. All the best to you of love and luck, Peter Bogdanovich.”
Our chat remains one of my favorites during my 15 year tenure as a film writer. --A.S.

Allen and Albert Hughes at the Chateau Marmont. Photograph surreptitiously taken by Krista Smith. I meet the twin directors Allen and Albert Hughes at the infamous Chateau Marmont, in Los Angeles. Surrounded by hipsters in hats pulled over week-old scruff, we discuss their new feature, The Book of Eli. When I tried to take a few snapshots of them I was immediately reprimanded for breaking the Chateau’s no-camera rule. Don’t they realize they have legends in their midst? Half African-American (on their father's side), half Armenian (mother's), the Hughes Brothers, as they jointly credit themselves in their films, have have been at the directing game since they were 12 years old, when their mother gave them a simple video camera. Their first feature, 1993's Menace II Society, came out shortly after their 20th birthday. Three years later they made Dead Presidents, about disillusioned, black Vietnam vets. Then, in 1999, they produced and directed American Pimp,...

Albert and Allen Hughes have had one of the strangest mainstream careers of any directors who ever landed with the sort of hype that was part of the release of "Menace II Society." I've spoken with them a few times over the years, and I've always found them to be entertaining, outspoken, and unexpected in all sorts of ways, and when I was asked if I wanted to speak with them on the...

Critically acclaimed filmmakers Spike Lee and Antoine Fuqua will adapt Philippe Thirault, Marc Riou and Mark Vigouroux’ graphic novel "Miss: Better Living Through Crime" for Vigilante Entertainment.
Originally published by French comic publisher Humanoids, “Miss” is a crime thriller set in the 1920s that follows an unusual partnership between two killers for hire: a poor white girl named Nola who becomes a tough femme fatale and Slim, an African-American pimp from Harlem. “Miss” was also published in the U.S. in 2002.
According to Variety, Fuqua will direct “Miss” while Lee is onboard as an executive producer along with Pierre Spengler, Fabrice Giger and Vigilante Entertainment founder Hicham Benkirane. The project is currently being shopped around to film studios.

Washington is joined by Garry Oldman (the Dark Knight) who will portray the despot of a small makeshift town who's determined to take possession of the book Eli's guarding. Allen and Albert Hughes (American Pimp, Dead Presidents, Menace II Society) are directing the post-apocalyptic drama, which is set to hit theaters on January 15th, 2010. Albert and Allen Hughes are revisiting the settings and themes of their 1999 documentary "American Pimp" with "Gentlemen of Leisure," a drama series project for HBO.
Set in Oakland, Calif., "Leisure," which will be written by "Rescue Me" co-executive producer Evan Reilly, explores the world of prostitution through the eyes of a legendary pimp contemplating retirement.
"It's about a guy who wants to get out but keeps getting sucked back in by the allure of the game and by extraneous circumstances that have to do with his family," Reilly said.
"Leisure" will explore the generational conflict of old-school pimps living by honor codes and creeds who are being pushed aside by violent upstarts who are coming "with their guns blazing," mixing prostitution with drugs and thievery, Allen Hughes said.
"These are some of the themes from 'The Godfather' but in the world of pimping," he said.
The brothers are set to direct the potential pilot as well as exec produce with Reilly and Interscope's Jimmy Iovine and Polly Anthony.
Allen Hughes said the idea for the show came after several of their friends suggested they should make "American Pimp" into a drama series for HBO. The two were resistant at first until they realized that there haven't been shows about that subculture.
"This is the last island that has not been reached in television or film," Allen Hughes said.
He approached Iovine, who had been looking to an urban mob drama set in the world of hip-hop, and he and Anthony came on board.
"I was captivated by it," Anthony said.
Like other Interscope-produced projects, "Leisure" will have a strong music component, she said.
The Hughes, who most recently shepherded the USA Network series "Touching Evil," are looking to push the envelope with "Leisure."
"We haven't done a movie in eight years, and we're really interested in trying do something new," Allen Hughes said. "You're not going to see a bunch of colorful, goofy '70's pimps. This is a film noir-style urban drama based in rich characters that will explore the human conditions across the board."
The Hughes brothers and Reilly are repped by Wma.
