The Toxic Avenger shared the first footage of its titular vigilante — armed with a mission and a mop — from the horror-comedy film starring Peter Dinklage.
Macon Blair’s feature reimagines the original 1984 cult-favorite movie and premiered this month at the Fantastic Fest in Austin. The Legendary Entertainment project, which has not yet announced a release date, stars Dinklage as Winston Gooze, a janitor whose employer refuses to cover treatment for his terminal illness. After robbing the company, Winston falls into toxic waste and aims to right society’s wrongs as the Toxic Avenger.
In the footage, a news anchor announces, “A group of armed extremists, the Nasty Lads — they’ve taken hostages at a Miss Meat lunchatorium downtown.” This leads to the introduction of the Toxic Avenger, a superhero who takes matters into his own hands.
Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, Julia Davis, Jonny Coyne, Elijah Wood and Kevin Bacon also...

Opening with an abortive hero’s narration, a flurry of neon, and defenestration via harpoon, writer/director Macon Blair’s re-imagination of Lloyd Kaufman’s legendary shoestring superhero spoof is an energetic good time that nevertheless proves why Mainstream and Tromaville are worlds apart.
Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) radiates put-upon single dad energy as Winston Gooze, a nobody janitor who struggles to keep his moody teenaged stepson (Jacob Tremblay) happy when he’s not mopping up toxic waste for Bth – an irresponsible corporate behemoth with its tentacles in everything from private insurance to banking to “proprietary, cutting edge, bio-boosters” for the health/beauty conscious consumer. When he’s diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer, Winston crashes a benefit for Bth overlord Bob Garbinger (Kevin Bacon) in a bid to beg him for the means to beat his disease. But Garbinger’s smiling callousness leads to Winston being left for dead...

Retroware surprised everyone earlier this year with the announcement that they’re working on a throwback beat-’em-up based on the Toxic Crusaders cartoon. They’ve now released a new trailer for the brawler that was shown at the Guerilla Collective Showcase, featuring more action involving Toxie and the gang.
The story sees Dr. Killemoff and his Radiation Rangers once again causing trouble, and it’s up to Toxie and his team of hideously deformed creatures of superhuman size and strength to stop Dr. Killemoff and his plans for global pollution.
Similar to Dotemu’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge last year, Toxic Crusaders will see you as Toxie with up to three other players in an arcade-style beat-’em-up. You’ll be able to choose from seven playable characters, including Toxie, No-Zone, Junkyard, Major Disaster, Headbanger, Toxie’s musically “gifted” girlfriend Yvonne, and the mother of all mothers,...

Back in 1991, Troma‘s Toxic Avenger franchise – which is full of nudity and vulgarity, and soaked in bodily fluids – unexpectedly got a kid-friendly spin-off with the animated series Toxic Crusaders. More than thirty years later, the Toxic Crusaders are back in a beat ’em up video game from Retrowave that’s described as a “radical, radioactive romp for a new era, featuring awesome action, crushing combos and more toxic waste than you’ll know what to do with!” You can check out the video game’s official site Here, and wishlist the game on Steam!
Here’s the set-up for the Toxic Crusaders video game: When the evil Dr. Killemoff attacks, only one team of hideously deformed creatures of superhuman size and strength stands between him and his plans for global pollution: the Toxic Crusaders, Earth’s last, greatest and ugliest hope for survival!

I know a lot of you have been asking for updates on the Japanese remake of Vincenzo Natali‘s sci-fi cult classic Cube, directed by Yasuhiko Shimizu (“Pension: Love Is Pink”). Well, we’re excited to reveal today that we bought it!
Yup! First reported by THR this afternoon, Cinedigm has acquired all North American rights to the remake of the 1997 award-winning Canadian cult classic and will be bringing it straight to Screambox subscribers on April 11th!
The newest Cube takes a deeper, darker and deadlier look at isolation and gore and follows a group of strangers who find themselves trapped in a sadistic maze without remembering how they got there. After waking up drugged and disoriented, the prisoners, who seemingly have nothing in common, find themselves in a mysterious room inscribed with an unfamiliar code.
Looking for ways to escape, they discover the room is riddled with lethal traps.

In the early days of home console and arcade gaming, many studios developed titles based on movies and TV shows. Actually, they tried to develop titles based on pretty much any movie and TV show s they could find. While this trend eventually faded away, Retroware is trying to rekindle the licensed game boom with an unlikely hero.
Recently, Retroware announced it is bringing back the underrated Toxic Crusaders cartoon as a beat ’em-up title. Never heard of Retroware? Well, the company published the Angry Video Game Nerd games, which should probably tell you all you need to know about the organization and its style.
But back to the Toxic Crusaders. Going by the trailer, the Toxic Crusaders game will play similarly to the recent (and bodacious) retro beat ’em-up Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge. And that is a huge compliment. The Toxic Crusaders’ Steam page promises seven...

Retroware has announced another blast from the past for Saturday morning cartoon aficionados (and horror fans) with Toxic Crusaders. Yes, the same Toxic Crusaders cartoon that’s now streaming on Screambox! The game is aiming for a late 2023 release on Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series and Xbox One.
The story sees Dr. Killemoff once again causing trouble, and it’s up to Toxie and his team of hideously deformed creatures of superhuman size and strength to stop Dr. Killemoff and his plans for global pollution.
Similar to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge last year, Toxic Crusaders will see you as Toxie with up to three other players in an arcade-style beat-’em-up. You’ll be able to choose from seven playable characters, including Toxie, No-Zone, Junkyard, Major Disaster, Headbanger, Toxie’s musically “gifted” girlfriend Yvonne, and the mother of all mothers, Mrs. Junko, Toxie’s mom!

William Malone, a Master of Horror behind such films as Creature, House on Haunted Hill, and Parasomnia, once took a stab at mixing early internet tech with horror in FeardotCom, which starred Stephen Dorff and was released in theaters by Warner Bros. Pictures in 2002.
The film has been making a bit of a resurgence and maybe even having a renaissance with horror fans newly appreciating the much-maligned techy horror film that followed Dorff as a New York City detective who investigates mysterious deaths occurring 48 hours after users log onto feardotcom.
Now, you can judge for yourself as FeardotCom is streaming exclusively on Screambox today, alongside Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III, the 1990 sequel starring Viggo Mortensen (The Lord of the Rings) and Ken Foree (Dawn of the Dead)!

In the ‘80s, probably more movies than you realize became animated series. Sure, The Real Ghostbusters and Disney’s spinoff series were prolific, but did you know even Ace Ventura, Dumb and Dumber, Beetlejuice, Bill and Ted, The Karate Kid and Back to the Future had cartoons? Those all make sense as they were family friendly films. But even some R-rated movies spawned kiddie cartoons.
Peter Weller | Orion Pictures Corporation/Sunset Boulevard/Corbis via Getty Images R-rated ‘Robocop’ movies had 2 animated series
The Robocop live-action films would eventually go PG-13 and include a child character in Robocop 3. But, there’s no mistaking the first two Robocops are not for kids. Still, the idea of a robot police officer could be kid-friendly, if you stripped it of the ultra-violence, profanity, corporate satire and Jesus metaphor.

A New York Times Critic’s Pick, found footage cosmic horror hit The Outwaters will stream exclusively on Screambox and release on digital platforms this Friday, 17th February, via Cinedigm and Bloody Disgusting. During its theatrical run, the film set off Apple Watch heart monitors, made viewers uncomfortably nauseous, and caused in-theater anxiety. Now fans can experience what Jezebel calls a “mind-twisting, narrative-pulverizing vision of horror” from the comfort of home. Critics are responding to The Outwaters, which is currently 71% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Rolling Stone hailed it as “obscenely effective,” while JoBlo said, “The film’s final 10 minutes are amongst the most gruesome and uncomfortable moments in any horror film I have ever seen.” Memory cards unearthed in a remote stretch of the Mojave Desert tell the story of four travelers who vanished during a sun-drenched camping trip. One night, everything changes when the foursome is sent on a...

Troma Entertainment’s Lloyd Kaufman is as unique as his studio is independent. Ironic, sarcastic, or provocatively caustic, Uncle Lloyd has got something to say and gets his point across on several levels simultaneously. It’s more economical. The iconic studio is renowned for cult classics like Class of Nuke ‘Em High, Chopper Chicks in Zombietown, and Surf Nazis Must Die, but the low-budget auteur maintained a diverse career of almost 50 years of “reel independence.”
Troma was founded in 1974 by Yale film society buddies Kaufman and Michael Herz. Their movies were produced on tiny budgets and were proudly proclaimed to make only “the most offensive, tasteless films in the history of cinema.” Even the lowest of low budget studios aspire to the highest of standards, and those without any at all shoot for the moon.

Dead Love is new unorthodox love story from writer and director Chris Gallagher, which has been selected to play at the Horror-on-Sea Film Festival on Friday 19th January. I got chance to ask Chris a few questions about making the film, working with Lloyd Kaufman and the seminal casting of Emily Booth whilst writing the script.
What can we expect from the film Dead Love?
Talking tables, cannibals, exploding hearts, an awesome soundtrack and many scenes of murder-sex (a term the actors coined on set). It’s essentially a love story concerning a man named Allan, a woman called Anne and a sentient piece of furniture! We’ve got all bases covered – if you want gore, we have scenes where some cast & crew had to watch through their hands. There’s a bit of comedy (hopefully) and underpinning that is the tale of two mismatched people finding love in an unlikely situation.

Written and Directed by the great Lloyd Kaufman (and co-directed by his partner-in-slime, Michael Herz), The Toxic Avenger, which is a thoroughly entertaining and unique combination of the superhero genre, raunchy and over-the-top comedy, as well as full-on horror movie-type gore, not only became an instant hit, but singlehandedly built Troma films (Toxie is the company’s mascot much like Spider-man is to Marvel Comics). I've always found it interesting that back in the late '70s, '80s, and '90s, there were some R-rated movies that were being marketed to kids. It’s really strange to think about now because of how much Hollywood has changed over the years, and that's not really socially acceptable anymore. Hell, these day parents are pissed off about collectible adult toys for TV shows like Breaking Bad. Back in the day though, there were several R-rated movies that spawned kids toys and amusing cartoon series. A lot of these films were considered hard-r movies as well, full of crazy violence, bad words, nudity, and sex. These were movies that kids shouldn’t have been watching, but the companies decided to include kids in their target market anyway, which turned out to be pretty freakin’ cool for those of us who got to experience it. We don’t...

Whoever thought RoboCop, Highlander and Rambo would make suitable kids' cartoons? These folks, that's who...
There are certain eternal questions in life that I doubt we’ll ever find an answer to. Who was Jack The Ripper? What happened on the Mary Celeste? How have there been five Resident Evil movies? And the question we’re going to look at now, why do they make kids' cartoons out of very adult movies?
In some ways it makes sense. As a kid, there are very few moments more exciting than watching an ultra-gory action film or a dodgy sex comedy that you know you’re not supposed to be watching. Everyone knows this, the studios especially. But surely they can’t be that blatant about it? You can’t make a show for kids based on RoboCop! Have you seen RoboCop? Won’t somebody please think of the children?

For those who haven’t seen The Toxic Avenger, first of all why not? (stop reading this review and go pre-order the Blu-ray now), it is essentially the film that made Troma. Having picked up numerous films for distribution and being predominantly known for sex comedies such as Squeeze Play, Michael Herz and Lloyd Kaufman decided to lense their own horror film and thus The Toxic Avenger was born; in turn Troma became known for campy, over the top, “horror” movies and the rest, they say, is history.
The film tells the story of Melvin Junko, a health club janitor who is the butt of a cruel joke that goes horribly wrong after he is tricked...

Last month we took a look at 10 must-own horror toys, and this week we add to that list with another 10 that no horror fan’s collection should be without. So let’s get right to it, shall we?!
Given how iconic he is in the world of horror, it’s quite surprising that only two companies have ever released a toy of Norman Bates. The first of those companies was McFarlane, which added the ultimate momma’s boy to Series 2 of their Movie Maniacs line, back in 1999. A major spoiler for anyone who hadn’t seen Psycho and had been living under a rock, the toy came with a removable wig and essentially depicted both Norman Bates and ‘mother,’ based on the infamous shower stabbing scene. These typically sell for around $10-20, but can oftentimes be found for even cheaper.

Recently, the Independent Film & Television Alliance published a list of the 30 most significant independent films of the last 30 years, and included The Toxic Avenger in its Honorable Mention category! Ten films were chosen for each decade, from the 1980s, through the 1990s, until 2010. Among the works highlighted in the first ten years were such classic and notable titles as David Lynch’s Blue Velvet and Steven Soderbergh’s Sex, Lies and Videotape. The Toxic Avenger was one of only three films (along with The Killing Fields and The Last Emperor) to receive Honorable Mention. All selections are being screened at the prestigious American Cinematheque! The Toxic Avenger would go on to spawn a Saturday morning children’s cartoon (The Toxic Crusaders), several sequels, a $100 million PG-13 Hollywood remake to be directed by Steve Pink (Hot Tub Time Machine, High Fidelity) and produced by Akiva Goldsman (Oscar-winning writer of [...]...

In comic books, it’s customary that when two superheroes team-up they have to beat the stuffing out of each other first before taking on a supervillain. With that in mind, here we have the man from the House of Ideas, Stan Lee, taking on the man from the House of Bad Taste, Lloyd Kaufman, in a five-minute insult-a-thon that took place when Kaufman was honored at the 2010 Comic-Con International in San Diego in July.
The best thing about this clip is to hear Stan “The Man” get a little risque with his material, especially when he seems to get nervous to be saying the word “tits” in a public event. And what surprised me the most is to think that these two guys do know each other with Stan clearly being familiar with Kaufman’s cinematic output. I didn’t expect Stan to know that Poultrygeist even exists. But,...

Well it looks like the remake train rolls on, with news of not one, but Three(!) newly announced remakes on the way – Real Genius, House Party and The Toxic Avenger.
Real Genius
News reaches us from Pajiba that Columbia Pictures and Imagine Entertainment are developing a remake of Real Genius, the classic 80’s Val Kilmer comedy about the youngest kid to be accepted into a program for geniuses who teams up with his roommates to develop a high-powered laser, which is stolen by the military and used as a weapon. Apparently a second take on the script is now out to writers… Why? Why? For one, the original film only made $13 million at the box-office, and secondly the film was very much a satire on the cold war era, and Hollywood doesn’t do satire anymore. Oh, and thirdly, how the hell is Columbia going to find someone as kooky...

Believe it or not, even Lloyd Kaufman is not immune to the Hollywood remake bug. A company called Original Media has just picked up the rights to Troma's flagship character The Toxic Avenger, with plans to re-invent him as "a green superhero for these environmentally conscious times." The movie will be produced by Akiva Goldsman (I Am Legend, The Losers), Richard Saperstein (Hancock) and Charlie Corwin (The Squid and the Whale, Half Nelson). They are calling it a "family friendly PG-13 action comedy akin to The Mask." The 1984 original is a cult classic that spawned three sequels, about a nerdy gym janitor named Melvin who gets exposed to radioactive waste and transforms into a massive yet deformed superhero. This isn't the first time Toxie has been given the family-friendly treatment; back in the early '90s there was an animated series spin-off called The Toxic Crusaders. Strange as it might sound,...
