Amazon Prime Video’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” is taking this Emmy race seriously.
With stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine leading the charge, “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” which draws inspiration from the 2005 movie featuring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, is set to compete in the drama categories at this year’s awards ceremony.
Crafted by Glover and Francesca Sloane, the show’s debut season stretches across eight episodes, centering on John and Jane Smith, secret agents who pose as a married couple while working for a shadowy corporation. Its blend of comedy and drama offered the potential to categorize it in either genre for awards consideration.

I’ve said this many times, but I state it again: I’m a super fan of the fantasy genre. Whether it’s because The Lord of the Rings saga remains my favorite after all these years or because it’s a genre that allows exploring the true immersive, escapist potential of cinema, I’ve always felt a special connection with this type of storytelling set in a completely imaginary world, full of mythical beings, breathtaking kingdoms and castles, and uniquely unforgettable creatures. Therefore, the mere fact that Damsel is an original fantasy story automatically set my expectations for this Netflix movie higher than usual.
Directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) and written by Dan Mazeau (Fast X), Damsel follows the story of Elodie (Millie Bobby Brown), a young woman from a poor kingdom who sees an opportunity to change her life, as well as that of her people and family,...

In Damsel, Princess Elodie is married off to Prince Henry. From the outside, it looks like a fairy tale story. But Henry’s family sacrifices Elodie’s life to save their bloodlines. They throw her into a cave where a fire-spitting dragon resides, hungry for royal blood. It’s a story of this Damsel who is in distress but has no one to save her.

Haunted Ulster Live is part homage to, and part parody of the BBC’s infamous Ghostwatch. For those unfamiliar with it, it was a 1992 Halloween special hosted by Michael Parkinson and presented as a live broadcast from a haunted house. Unfortunately, many viewers didn’t know it wasn’t the real thing and the BBC ended up fielding over 1,000,000 from concerned viewers. An early entry in the mockumentary/found footage genre it’s also the precursor of films like Kild TV, Deadstream, and The Cleansing Hour.

As fans of the video game knew it would, Episode 9 of “The Last of Us” ended with Joel (Pedro Pascal) rampaging through a hospital to save Ellie (Bella Ramsey) — and potentially ruining chances for a cure for humanity. On the show’s companion podcast, showrunner Craig Mazin discussed why the adaptation recreated the video game’s ending almost exactly beat for beat, saying, “[If] you change the end of ‘The Last of Us,’ you’re a fucking idiot.” That sentiment applies to its music, as well.
Composer Gustavo Santaolalla wrote the bulk of the score for both installments of the game as well as the HBO series, and did not feel any need to deviate from the sounds and themes he created for the games, because his music responds to who Ellie and Joel are as characters. “When I did the game, I wanted two sounds: one sound that is more towards the feminine side,...

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “The Last of Us,” including the season finale.]
Ask most fans of “The Last of Us” to describe what makes the game a standout achievement and you’ll probably get an explanation of the hospital scene. It’s not a coincidence that in the post-premiere trailer that gave viewers a peek at everything to come in “The Weeks Ahead,” Joel (Pedro Pascal) walking through the hospital was the last image teased.
In Sunday night’s season finale, Joel’s tragic choices play out once again. Faced with the option of leaving Ellie (Bella Ramsey) to die and offering the world a chance at a cure, Joel goes the opposite route. In a cloud of bullets and bodies, Joel swipes Ellie from the Fireflies’ makeshift hospital and takes her away. Marlene (Merle Dandridge) is left dead, along with a number of surgeons and nurses who thought they were fulfilling humanity’s last best hope.

HBO’s new series The Last of Us premiered to the approval of fans of the video game and viewers who are new to the franchise. Though the thrilling story has just begun, the first episode established the importance of the soundtrack in setting the mood for the post-apocalyptic world.
Created by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann (the latter also wrote and directed the video game), The Last of Us stars Pedro Pascal as grizzled survivor Joel and Bella Ramsey as a teenage girl named Ellie. Taking place after a fungal plague has ravaged the globe, it centers around Joel fulfilling his task of smuggling Ellie beyond a quarantine zone in Boston.

The Last of Us has gone from being a popular video game, to an acclaimed HBO television series, and now to a 66-song soundtrack featuring an intricate world-building score from composers Gustavo Santaolalla and David Fleming alongside a cover of Linda Ronstadt’s “Long Long Time” by Nick Offerman.
“Creating the music for the HBO series based on the video game The Last of Us was, in a way, an expansion of what we have developed and recorded for the first installment of the game,” Santaolalla said in a statement.

HBO’s latest hit series The Last of Us now officially has a soundtrack for its first season, a massive, 66-song compilation of all the music scoring the post-apocalyptic tale. Check it out below.
After working on the original The Last of Us video game, composer Gustavo Santaolalla returns for the HBO series, joined by fellow artist David Fleming. In an upcoming interview with Consequence, Santaolalla describes his approach to the soundtrack, saying, “The process of adapting, it was more in a way like craftwork than actually a new creation, because the themes were there, those things are there, like the characters, it wasn’t about creating a new job, it wasn’t about finding what is interesting. For example, in seeing how Pascal and Bella, they’re different than the actors that played the voices, but at the same time, they keep the soul of the characters intact.”

U.S. actor David Dastmalchian is attached to star as the host of a late-night talk show that goes horribly wrong in upcoming indie chiller “Late Night With the Devil,” which is currently shooting in Australia.
Directed by Australian writing-directing duo Colin and Cameron Cairnes, “Late Night” is the second title spawned by a multi-picture deal between low-budget U.S. genre label Spooky Pictures and Image Nation Abu Dhabi, following Chloe Okuno’s “Watcher,” which made a splash at Sundance.
Dastmalchian, who in Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” played the Twisted Mentat Piter de Vries, a human specially trained to perform mental functions rivaling computers, will next be seen in Amblin’s horror-thriller “Last Voyage of the Demeter,” directed by André Øvredal, and in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer.”

Sandra Bullock plays a newly released Washington State ex-con trying to pick up where she left off 20 years earlier in “The Unforgivable” — no easy task, particularly since her character remains branded a cop-killer pariah. Working in English, German director Nora Fingscheidt’s second narrative feature (following Berlin prize-winner “System Crasher”) is adapted from a 2009 miniseries by esteemed U.K. TV scribe Sally Wainwright. The story translates well enough in cultural terms, though its density of plot elements ends up feeling more contrived in this compressed feature format.

Adapted by Oscar nominee Vanessa Taylor (“The Shape of Water”) from J.D. Vance’s bestselling memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy” is exactly the sort of mainstream heart-tugger that many moviegoers and Oscar voters embrace. Ron Howard knows what he is doing. He’s been to the Oscar party many times, from “Apollo 13” to “Frost/Nixon” and “A Beautiful Mind,” which all featured actors in top form.
Howard’s stock-in-trade studio drama is harder to come by these days. Always a canny Hollywood player (with his Imagine Entertainment partner Brian Grazer), Howard pivoted over the past decade to more indie-minded projects such as “Rush” and documentaries like “Rebuilding Paradise.”
Netflix backed “Hillbilly Elegy,” a resonant family story that will likely lure far more viewers than the movie might have generated in theaters, Covid or no. In fact, it’s likely that no studio would have backed this, even with two of the great...

Falling squarely into the melodramatic Oscar-bait category that director Ron Howard revisits every now and again, Hillbilly Elegy, adapted from the bestselling novel by conservative writer J.D. Vance, is a shockingly amateurish adaptation. Despite a heavy-hitter cast and Oscar winning screenwriter (The Shape of Water‘s Vanessa Taylor), Elegy dials up the theatrics, asking its players to cry, scream, and punch on cue, offering little besides decontextualized scenes that might be at home on an acting reel, but never add up to a coherent narrative.
Unfurling in two timelines, the main narrative follows a law-school-aged J.D. attemping to juggle rounds of interviews in hope of landing a prestigious summer internship, with the help of his girlfriend Usha. Interrupting Vance’s social climb, his mother Bev (Adams) has relapsed again, with his sister Lindsay (Bennett) unable to continue to take care of her. While traveling to Ohio to get Bev back in rehab,...

In a time where the world is as polarized as ever, there seems to be a yearning to show oppression in all cultures. With Black Lives Matter gaining significant traction, a film about a Caucasian venture capitalist’s upbringing doesn’t feel exactly well-timed in our climate. Despite two magnificent actresses like Amy Adams and Glenn Close at the helm, director Ron Howard’s “Hillbilly Elegy” may face trouble on the awards circuit.
With a collective 13 Oscar nominations and zero wins shared between them, Adams and Close have long been considered as overdue as any actresses working today. Close is currently the most nominated woman in Oscar history without a win at seven, with Adams tied for second with Deborah Kerr and Thelma Ritter with six. Adams, whose significant nominations have included “Junebug” and “The Fighter” in supporting actress, has only been able to nab one lead nomination for 2013’s “American Hustle.

Former "The Hills" star and recent "Dancing With the Stars" contestant Audrina Patridge is moving on ... to VH1.
Patridge's VH1 show, called "Audrina," will premiere in April. The show, executive produced by Mark Burnett ("Survivor," "Sarah Palin's Alaska"), will follow Patridge as she tries to further her Hollywood career and with her family.
Mom Lynn has already gained some notoriety for a drunken screed following her daughter's elimination from "Dwts" in October; her dad, Mark, and younger siblings Casey, Marky and Samantha will also be featured. The family stuff will intertwine with tales of Audrina trying to advance her " acting, modeling and business career."
So why Audrina, VH1 executive vice president of original programming and production Jeff Olde?
"We love that Audrina's life plays out simultaneously on two levels. On one level, she is working hard to establish herself in the entertainment industry," Olde says. "But at the same time she has this amazingly real,...

Cameras roll as Audrina takes her career to the next level while working to maintain some sense of normalcy. With the stress of being hounded by the paparazzi, a high-stakes career and looking for Mr. Right, will Audrina manage to handle the pressure and stay grounded?
Besides Audrina’s blossoming career and tumultuous love life, the television personality has something else to focus on – her family. VH1’s “Audrina” will introduce the world to a never-before-seen side of Audrina – her large, outrageous, Orange County family. As she advances her acting, modeling and business career, she is juggling a prominent role in her large, tight-knit family. With her tell-it-like-it-is mom,...

Audrina Patridge may have been booted out of "Dancing with the Stars," but the former "The Hills" star isn't leaving the small screen yet. The 25-year-old reality TV star is set to star in another reality series that will be executive produced by "Survivor" mastermind Mark Burnett.
According to Deadline Hollywood, VH1 is close to greenlighting the as-yet untitled series, which is expected to "document Patridge's life with her family as she tries to navigate the world of fame and celebrity in Hollywood."
Patridge and her manager Dave Fleming will executive produce with Burnett.
The idea was built in the spring of 2009. MTV even ordered a pilot for "The Audrina Show," but it ultimately failed to secure a series spot. Sister channel VH1 then pursued Patridge and Burnett for a new version of the project.

Sex and the City co-star Kristin Davis is returning to series television with a new single-camera comedy. Davis is set to star and co-executive produce NBC's The Happiness Project, a comedy based on Gretchen Rubin’s best-selling memoir, which writer Kristin Newman (Chuck, How I Met Your Mother) is in negotiations to write and executive produce. Separately, Davis has been tapped to co-star opposite Dwayne Johnson and Michael Caine in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, New Line's sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D, in which she will play love interest to Johnson and mother to Josh Hutcherson. Davis has just started filming the movie in Hawaii. Rubin's memoir chronicles the New York-based writer's account of the year she spent test-driving studies and theories about how to be happier. It also spawned a popular blog whose fans included Davis, which is how the actress got involved in the TV project.
