Designer, editor and author Hal Rubenstein is looking to bring his best-selling book about the influence of television on fashion … to television.
Rubenstein, a founding editor of InStyle magazine, is developing a docuseries based on his best-selling 2023 book Dressing the Part: Television’s Most Stylish Shows along with unscripted producer Magilla Entertainment (Discovery’s Moonshiners, HGTV’s Beachfront Bargain Hunt). The producers are taking the show to potential buyers this week.
As with the book, the potential series will feature Rubenstein talking with costume designers, producers and stars about the ways television has both reflected and influenced fashion trends. Among the shows featured in the book are Friends, Emily in Paris, Miami Vice, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Empire, Gossip Girl, Dynasty and RuPaul’s Drag Race, among many others.

From Mary Tyler Moore’s black capri pants to the waist-cinching corsets on Bridgerton, the costumes on television’s hottest shows over the past 70-plus years have influenced what we wear more than viewers may realize. That’s the premise of Hal Rubenstein’s just-released book, which is sure to spawn an escapist deep dive by even the most casual TV fan.
Dressing the Part: Television’s Most Stylish Shows (Harper, $36) explores the costume design of 50 high-profile TV series, from I Love Lucy and The Donna Reed Show in the 1950s, to Downton Abbey, Sex and the City, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and others. But it was Bridgerton that inspired the idea for the book. “Harper wanted to do a book on Bridgerton’s costume design, and my feeling was that it was a period costume show that [didn’t relate yet],” Rubenstein told The Hollywood Reporter. “I thought we would see the ramifications...

It’s been 20 years since Italian design icon Gianni Versace was gunned down by a serial killer on the steps of his Miami Beach mansion, Casa Casuarina, in Florida on July 15, 1997.
Much has changed in the decades since Versace became the final victim of Andrew Cunanan’s multi-state murder spree. But some things endure — chief among them, perhaps, Versace’s name and the fashion empire that bears it.
“He has a legacy that’s still vibrant, and that’s the true test of somebody’s greatness,” friend Hal Rubenstein told People earlier this month. “You still think of him. And that’s pretty glorious.

Twenty years after serial killer Andrew Cunanan’s cross-country murder spree left five dead, including fashion designer Gianni Versace, a key question still lingers for investigators and the victims’ families: Why?
Even now, according to experts People spoke to on the anniversary of Cunanan’s slayings, it’s still not clear what drove the 27-year-old hustler to travel across the country killing people he knew and others he did not.
“Investigators really didn’t have what they felt was a concrete motive,” says John Kelly, a criminal profiler and serial killer expert.

The 1997 murder of designer Gianni Versace was so shocking for his family that, years later, they were “still in pieces,” a family friend tells People.
“I met them several years and … it took several years for the pieces to settle and for the family to deal with the reality of what had happened — both personally and professionally,” the friend says.
Versace, 50, was returning home to his Miami mansion on the morning of July 15, 1997, when he encountered 27-year-old Andrew Cunanan, who had already killed at least four other people.
What happened between them is still unclear, but Cunanan almost immediately opened fire on Versace,...
