It turned out to be a downright risible night at the Tony Awards. On June 5, 1983, “Torch Song Trilogy” beat out “Plenty” and “‘night, Mother” for best play of that Broadway season. Granted, the David Hare and Marsha Norman plays have not been blessed with stellar revivals to enhance their reputations since then, but at least no one ever felt the need to cut huge chunks from either work or change the title. A revival of Harvey Fierstein’s “Torch Song” opened Thursday at Off Broadway’s Second Stage; it’s 45 minutes shorter than the original, and is performed with only.

“We need to be heroes again,” Michael Urie tells Et before a full weekend of performances at Second Stage Theatre, where the Younger star is leading the first major New York revival of Torch Song Trilogy, Harvey Fierstein’s seminal play about gay life and identity in 1970s and early ’80s New York. “We had a president who was a hero for us,” Urie says, recalling the past eight years with Barack Obama. “Now we have to be the heroes again and stand up for who we are.”
That conviction is at the heart of Torch Song, which will open off-Broadway Oct. 19 and continue through Dec. 3. As the actor notes, the original production “actually changed people’s lives” when it premiered, first in three parts downtown and then on Broadway in 1982, when Urie was just 2 years old. (It has been revised and condensed to a more conventional length -- and renamed Torch Song -- for the new revival...

Most recent film appearances, plus concert and television work Please check out our previous post: "Montiel La Violetera and Pedro Almodóvar Icon." Her last star vehicle of note was Juan Antonio Bardem's Varietés (1971), a melodrama about an aging actress who continues to dream of becoming a bona fide star. [Please scroll down to listen to Montiel's husky rendition of "Amado mío."] The forty-something hopeful eventually gets her chance at stardom, but it all turns out to be a flash in the pan. By then, following a whole array of formulaic romantic musical melodramas, Montiel's box-office allure had waned rather radically. She turned down roles in Spain's cine del destape -- post-Franco softcore comedies -- which eventually meant the demise of her movie career. Her last official star vehicle was Pedro Lazaga's comedy Cinco almohadas para una noche ("Five Cushions for One Night," 1974) -- though she would be seen in Eduardo Manzanos Brochero's That's Entertainment-like compilation feature Canciones de nuestra...

Legendary Spanish-born international film and music icon has died Sara Montiel, also known as either Sarita Montiel or, at times, Saritisima, was one of the Spanish-speaking world's biggest stars. She died on Monday, April 8, apparently of "natural causes" at her house in Madrid's district of Salamanca. She was 85 years old. Earlier today, a cortege driving through the streets of Madrid was attended (and applauded) by thousands of mourning fans. Montiel was born on March 10, 1928; according to online sources, her birth name was María Antonia Alejandra Vicenta Elpidia Isadora Abad Fernández; her father was a small farmer and her mother was beauty products salesperson. She left behind her poverty-stricken childhood, spending her days in the streets of her small village while dreaming of Spanish film star Imperio Argentina, after moving to Madrid in her mid-teens. Diction and singing lessons followed. Eventually, she started appearing in films, landing two roles in 1944 releases:...

Actress Sara Montiel, one of the great stars of Spanish film, died Monday in her home in Madrid, Spanish newswire Efe reports. She was 85.
The cause of death was not yet clear from Spanish news reports, though Montiel likely died from natural causes, according to ABC.
Born in 1928 in the town of Campo de Criptana with the name María Antonia Abad Fernández, Montiel was among the first Spaniards to cross into Hollywood, where she shared the screen with legends like Gary Cooper, Charles Bronson and Burt Lancaster before returning to conquer the world of Spanish cinema.
“In Mexico and the United States I had to get up at 5:30 or 6:00 in the morning,” the actress said in an interview with Spanish daily El País, recalling the days before she returned to the country of her birth. “Never again!”

Okay, "Vampire Diaries" fans, tonight is the night. There have been a few bits (and bites) from this episode that I've been keeping secret for several weeks now, and getting to watch them play out on screen was both a relief and a heartbreaker.
First of all, before we jump into this episode, I want to take a moment to defend my favorite, Matt. I've been seeing a lot of Matt hate, but can we ease up on that, please? Matt is actually the person acting rationally here! Monsters are supposed to be scary. Sure, his whole jealous act with Caroline and Tyler isn't cute, but we're going to have to forgive him for being scared of werewolves and vampires. That is the normal reaction. He is not Bella Swan. That's why we like him!
Okay, moving on from there, "The Reckoning" was pretty much an hour of absolute perfection.

Q: After seeing Blaine chase Kurt around the room in Glee’s “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” Christmas episode number, I said to my close friend/ex that I would "let Blaine chase me around that room for days on end," and his response was, "See, I'm more of the person who'd be doing the chasing." I'm 5' 9'' and 130 lbs, and more than one person has referred to me as a "twink" (a word which I find to be derogatory and demeaning). What confuses me is that my instinct to be chased by Blaine does not follow with him dominating me, but the complete opposite. I am always attracted to the most butch, athletic, tall, hyper-masculine guys around me because I want to ravish them. Is that weird?...

Fans of Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly will want to watch the clip below from the bonus features of the Back to the Future 25th Anniversary Trilogy collection out Oct. 26. We get a peek at what the movie would have looked like if director Robert Zemeckis didn’t realize after five weeks of filming that Eric Stoltz, who was originally cast as the teen time traveler, had different “comedy sensibilities” than himself and his co-writer Bob Gale. As executive producer Steven Spielberg recalls in the clip, Zemeckis showed him some footage and said he didn’t think they were...

You know AFI, aka A Fire Inside, the goth-punk rock band probably most known for its 2006 hit 'Miss Murder'. Thursday the band launched its first web series, In Tranmission, a making-of documentary for the band eighth studio album, Crash Love. The weekly series is an exclusive on music social media network Buzznet. It's not quite Wilco's I Am Trying to Break Your Heart—the true benchmark of rock album chronicling. And unless you're already a fan of AFI, it's not likely you'll be checking back weekly on this one. The opening episodes drag on with talking head shots of the band members—Adam Carson, Jade Puget, Hunter Burgan, and Davey Havok—explaining why "Torch Song" was picked to open the album. Though touted as "a rare and comprehensive look at the inner workings of a band that is normally shrouded in mystery," it's strikingly without any actual music in the two 5-minute episodes so far.

MattCanada here with another week of homo classics. Since I started writing this weekly column about a month ago, I have focused on films which have not been Oscar contenders and not featured the actresses which Nathaniel, me, and all the readers of this website respect (read: worship in a cult-like fashion). So on to Cabaret!
Liza Minnelli's Oscar winning role as Sally Bowles may well be the gayest Oscar win of all time. Now I am not a big Liza fan, actually I actively dislike her in anything else, but in Cabaret she gives one of the most amazing performances in the history of cinema in the greatest movie musical of all time. Not to be hyperbolic or anything, but Liza's Sally and Cabaret are earth shatteringly good. Liza is hardly the only reason to love Cabaret. You can get almost as much pleasure out of Joel Grey and Marisa Berenson's performances,...

Fangoria Musick is pleased to bring you an exclusive preview of “Torch Song” from AFI’s forthcoming album, Crash Love, in-stores 9/29.
Frontman Davey Havok states that the new album "is certainly not a concept album or rock opera by any stretch, but the songs are generally connected by a greater theme... The album title itself can be construed as a command, as a destructive kind of love, or as a desire for a relationship that's heading inevitably toward disaster or flameout."

As we continue to celebrate the work of John Hughes, who died Thursday at the age of 59, you start realizing how much of your life has been spent watching his films. Enough to recite entire scenes and to recall the tiniest detail. (I used to practice writing the word "No" like Molly Ringwald did on that questionnaire in Sixteen Candles — with three exclamation points, underlined three times. Anything you'd like to cop to?). As well as I know his films, though, I don't know a lot of trivia about them. And I'd like to. So here's what I propose: I share my favorite tidbits, you share yours. In 2006, I had a chance to chat with Jon Cryer when Pretty in Pink's 20th anniversary was feted with the release of an Everything's Duckie Edition DVD. Some trivia-filled highlights: Entertainment Weekly: On the DVD, director Howard Deutch says Duckie's full-blown dance...
