Challengers and The Fall Guy prove that the movie star is still alive – and can make a huge difference to a film’s success. A few thoughts…
The movie star is dead. Or at least our idea of stardom may have drastically changed. After streaming has become a credible rival to cinemas, it’s not so much star power that necessarily gets people to spend their hard-earned money on a movie ticket. Sure, the Swifties ran to the cinemas to watch The Eras Tour, but Taylor Swift is hardly a movie star, despite her turn in Cats.
Ana De Armas blames social media for the lack of movie stars. “I feel like the new generations don’t have that concept, because of social media,” de Armas told Vanity Fair in 2023. “There is so much information out there and oversharing. The concept of a movie star is someone untouchable you only see onscreen.

Awards season is full of movies made by and starring white people. But a cinema that identifies and interrogates the idea of whiteness itself is glaringly absent
Surveying the cinematic landscape this awards season, one question keeps coming to mind: where are all the white films for white people? That might seem an odd concern to have in 2024, when white people are well represented at every major awards ceremony and the cultural event of the last 12 months was Barbenheimer, a set-to between the greatest of the Great White Man biopics and a jubilant celebration of the archetypal blonde. Or it might just seem a misdirection of energies when, at long last, we also now have some serious east Asian, Black and Indigenous-centring contenders to cheer on, in the form of Past Lives, American Fiction, The Color Purple and Killers of the Flower Moon. Yet even in our racially diverse times,...

A DJ from the flagship radio station of the NFL’s Washington Commanders was fired after an incident earlier in the week when he and a partner, broadcasting live from the team’s Virginia training facility, called a local female sports reporter “Barbie” and “a cheerleader” on air while she was on assignment covering the team.
Michael Sorce, known as Don Geronimo, from Wbig-fm Big 100, was broadcasting live Thursday at the facility in Ashburn, Va, when he and his co-host Crash Young saw WUSA9-tv reporter Sharla McBride walking inside the facility and began commenting on air.
“Hey look, Barbie’s here. Hi, Barbie girl,” Geronimo said live on air. “I’m guessing she’s a cheerleader.”
Later, when Geronimo and co-host Crash Young saw McBride again conducting interviews, they continued.
“Oh hey. There’s that chick that you thought … you said tight?” said Geronimo. “Yah. I screamed tight when she was …” said Young.

The Action Scene is a column exploring the construction of action set pieces, but it also considers “scene” in the sense of field or area: “action” as a genre and mode that spans different cultures and historical periods. By examining these two levels in tandem—one oriented toward aesthetic expression, the other toward broader contexts and concepts—this series aims to deepen appreciation for and spark discussion about action cinema. It’s easy to forget that Speed (1994)—a film so famously invested in relentless forward motion—begins vertically. Before Keanu Reeves’ Jack Traven boards an L.A. bus rigged with explosives, set to blow if the speedometer drops below 50 mph, we get a hostage rescue from within an elevator shaft, and, right before that, an opening credits sequence that distills the rescue scene to its essentials: dizzying heights and the fear of falling. At first glance, this sequence seems simple,...

The Iguana With The Tongue Of Fire will be available on Blu-ray April 9th From Arrow Video
One of several animal-in-the-title cash-ins released in the wake of Dario Argento s box-office smash The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, The Iguana with the Tongue of Fire is a gloriously excessive giallo that boasts a rogues gallery of perverse characters; violent, fetishized murders, and one of the genre s most nonsensical, red-herring laden plots (which sees almost every incidental character hinted at potentially being the killer).
Set in Dublin (a rather surprising giallo setting), Iguana opens audaciously with an acid-throwing, razor-wielding maniac brutally slaying a woman in her own home. The victim s mangled corpse is discovered in a limousine owned by Swiss Ambassador Sobiesky and a police investigation is launched, but when the murdering continues and the ambassador claims diplomatic immunity, tough ex-cop John Norton is brought in to find the killer…...

The Possessed will be available on Blu-ray February 5th From Arrow Video
The Possessed is a wonderfully atmospheric proto-giallo based on one of Italy s most notorious crimes, the Alleghe killings, and adapted from the book on that case by acclaimed literary figure Giovanni Comisso.
Peter Baldwin stars as Bernard, a depressed novelist who sets off in search of his old flame Tilde, a beautiful maid who works at a remote lakeside hotel. Bernard is warmly greeted by the hotel owner Enrico and his daughter Irma, but Tilde has disappeared under suspicious circumstances. Bernard undertakes an investigation and is soon plunged into a disturbing drama of familial secrets, perversion, madness and murder…
Co-written by Giulio Questi and co-directed by Luigi Bazzoni, The Possessed masterfully combines film noir, mystery and giallo tropes, whilst also drawing on the formal innovations of 1960s art cinema (particularly the films of Michelangelo Antonioni). A uniquely dreamlike take on true crime,...

Federico Fellini’s Orchestra Rehearsal will be available on Blu-ray February 13th From Arrow Academy
Made in 1978 for Italian television, Orchestra Rehearsal is possibly Fellini s most satirical and overtly political film.
An allegorical pseudo-documentary, the film depicts an Italian television crew’s visit to a dilapidated auditorium (a converted 13th-century church) to meet an orchestra assembling to rehearse under the instruction of a tyrannical conductor. The TV crew interviews the various musicians who each speak lovingly about their chosen instruments. However, as petty squabbles break out amid the different factions of the ensemble, and the conductor berates his musicians, the meeting descends into anarchy and vandalism. A destructive crescendo ensues before the musicians regroup and play together once more in perfect harmony.
Abounding with its director s trademark rich imagery and expressive style, Orchestra Rehearsal marks the last collaboration between Fellini and the legendary composer Nino Rota (due to...

Vidya Balan is anything but conventional, shattering glass ceilings and breaking stereotypes – She was the first female star from Bollywood to proudly shoulder a woman-centric film and rewrote history with the blockbuster The Dirty Picture.
Having headlined several game changing films for women stars in movies including Ishqya and the Kahaani franchise , the actress who has dared to be different and stuck to her roots, has always been a favorite while studying how the Contemporary Female Star in Bollywood has shaped aspirations for the New Indian Woman.
Tupur Chatterjee of the University of Texas at Austin Department of Radio-Television-Film, United States recently wrote a piece addressing the subject as part of Synoptique, a special selection of texts that addressed questions of “national” Indian cinema within the context of art film circuits and transnational/national/regional film industries, celebrated film cultures and the (re) discovery of forgotten ones.

As expected, “La La Land” came away with the live-action sound mixing award at Saturday’s 53rd Cinema Audio Society (Cas) Awards. Damien Chazelle’s valentine to Hollywood musicals is now a sure bet to win the Best Sound Mixing Oscar. (Sound Editing is still a race.)
Meanwhile, Pixar’s “Finding Dory” upset Disney’s “Zootopia” for animated feature honors. And HBO’S “The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and The Silk Road Ensemble” earned the first-ever Cas documentary award.
TV winners included “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” (movie or miniseries), “Game of Thrones,” which grabbed its fourth consecutive award for “Battle of the Bastards” (one-hour), “Modern Family: The Storm” (1/2-hour), and “Grease Live!” (specials),
Oscar-nominated sound engineer John Pritchett (“Road to Perdition,” “Memories of a Geisha”) received the Career Achievement Award and Jon Favreau won the Filmmaker Award for “The Jungle Book’s” innovative sound.

Charles Gant chronicles the evolution of London’s long-running Lgbt film festival.
When in 1986, film programmer Mark Finch persuaded the British Film Institute (BFI) to let him present a seven-day season of nine gay and lesbian features under the banner Gays’ Own Pictures, nobody would have envisaged the scale and popularity of the annual festival that resulted – or its status within the BFI calendar.
As the 30th edition of London’s Lgbt film festival sets to launch this week with the world premiere of the Duncan Kenworthy-produced The Pass at the 1,679-capacity Odeon Leicester Square, the BFI can be forgiven for allowing itself a celebratory mood over the event it rebranded Flare two years ago.
Programmers past and present all concur regarding the distance the festival has travelled in its 30 years. Says Briony Hanson, co-programmer from 1997 to 2000 and now director of film at the British Council: “I look at the festival now, going to the...

Jazz music has long expressed its capacity to borrow from various, sometimes contradictory sources in order to create something which in every sense transcends the original elements. Since the earliest days of jazz as a musical form, it has been inspired by military and funeral marches; has stylishly interpreted popular songs; and even brought the classical intricacies of Wagner into the domain of swinging brasses and reeds. This multiculturalism and eclecticism of jazz likens it to cinema which, in turn, has transformed pop culture motifs into something close to the sublime and mixed ‘high’ and ‘low’ artistic gestures to remarkable effect. In the history of jazz, the evolution from ragtime or traditional tunes, to discovering the treasure trove of Broadway songs was fast and smooth. The latter influence was shared by cinema, as the history of film production quickly marched on. The emergence of ‘talkies’ in the United States meant rediscovering Broadway,...

Capping off a busy night for awards in the run-up to the 87th annual Oscars, the Cinema Audio Society (Cas) awarded the sound mixing team of "Birdman" top honors Saturday night. "Sherlock," "Game of Thrones" and "Modern Family" won in the TV categories. Clint Eastwood's war film "American Sniper" is considered the favorite to win the comparable Best Sound Mixing Oscar, though "Birdman" was nominated by the Academy's sound branch as well and, indeed, could be formidable if it is the industry favorite the guild awards have suggested it is so far. "Whiplash," also Oscar-nominated, won the BAFTA prize. "Interstellar" and "Unbroken" are also up for the Academy Award, each of them nominated by Cas as well. Six of the last eight Cas winners have won the sound mixing Oscar. Check out the full list of Cas winners below, nominees here and the rest of the season's offerings at The Circuit.

Complaints about the sound mix on Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar” clearly didn’t have much influence on the members of the Cinema Audio Society, who on Tuesday made the film one of the five nominees for the best feature-film sound mix of 2014.

Nominations have been announced for the 51st annual Cinema Audio Society Awards, and as ever with this group lately, there are a few surprises. For instance, "Unbroken" made the cut despite being mostly ignored by the guilds and industry groups so far, and Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" showed up as well. The biggest jaw-dropper might just be that after months of being the poster child for sound complaints, somehow, some way, "Interstellar" ended up in the mix (no pun intended). There are always one or two that drop out, however. Last year, for example, another Marvel movie — "Iron Man 3" — was chalked up here. But it fell out in favor of "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" with the Academy. I find myself wondering if "The Battle of the Five Armies" could make the cut this year as it's even more of an action/sound film than the last.

All-black romantic comedy Think Like a Man is more com than rom, unlike its white counterparts. Is it a realistic portrayal of black attitudes to courtship?
An ensemble romcom pits a momma's boy, a commitment-phobe, an avid stud and a dreamy loser against a lineup of no less familiar female stereotypes. Everyone is aspirationally middle class and inhabits an improbably expensive-looking apartment in sunny La. It may sound as though Think Like a Man is to be filed along with the likes of New Year's Eve, He's Not That Into You, Crazy Stupid Love and Valentine's Day. There is, however, one difference. Aside from a disconcerting dash of inverse tokenism, everybody is black.
So what, you may think. It's 2012. If the president's colour is irrelevant, surely race must have little bearing on the vicissitudes of the heart that beset today's upmarket urban Americans. In a film depicting such tribulations, the...

"Loving evaluation of texture, the screen being filled as a window is dressed in a swank department store." —Orson Welles
If we accept Raymond Durgnat's theory that in cinema, landscape is the equation of the state of the soul and architecture constitutes an X-ray photograph of the heroes'1, then Minnelli's films, especially musicals and melodramas, can be described as full-color X-ray photography of the inner universe of his characters, with a particular interest in artists, daydreamers, painters and dancers.
Minnelli's films generally happen in strange places. In his musicals the absence of modern urban life (unlike Stanley Donen, for instance) is noticeable. The real is recreated by studio-manufactured settings, where also the unreal, the fantasy, takes place. Minnelli's films are the encounter of two worlds, two parallel lines, which in reality never happen to cross each other. Although it is true that...

“There is no pleasure. There is no pain. There is only skin.” - Pinhead, Hellraiser III
“Women tend to be more tolerant about visceral things because they have more direct personal experience with them. They cope with periods once a month, they go through childbirth and they are usually the ones who look after the bleeding and battered limbs when the kids take a tumble. They can put blood and gore in context and generally cope better than men.” - Bela Lugosi
Most scholarship on the horror film has assumed that males are the primary spectators of horror; however, there have been developments, both in scholarship as well as in mainstream media, to contradict this point. In 2009, journalist Michelle Orange pointed out, in an article written for the New York Times, “Recent box office receipts show that women have an even bigger appetite for these [horror] films than men.

The neo-noir thriller experienced something of a resurgence in early and late 90s, aided in no small part by the national cynicism that was finding a voice in Generation X, and the rise of independent film, which could operate with a level of nihilism that their major studio counterparts couldn’t get away with. But through the haze of smog-clouded urban hellscapes, Se7en stands alone, providing a moral grounding that stabilizes the constant existential horror of its anonymous American city. While all too many films would like to convince you of the essential banality of our society and institutions, Se7en answers what may be the defining challenge of our times: to see the world for what it is, and love it anyway.

MattCanada here with a bit of an overview and Best-Of Gay films for the last decade.
Gay cinema over the last ten years has been intrinsically tied to both the political gains made by gay activists and the intense battles surrounding everything from the worldwide fight for gay marriage to nationally specific issues like America's Dadt and Doma, and Britain's repeal of Section 28. The relationship between the political and the cinematic is always most pronounced in the medium's relationship to minority groups and their texts.
The Aughts have seen gay-rights become the most visible"social values" issue in America, and this has been reflected in a number of high profile American films dealing frankly, sexually, and politically with what it means to be gay in America. Milk, Far From Heaven, and Mysterious Skin employ gay filmmaking traditions, like those of Affirmation Documentaries (Richard Dyer's term), Sirkian melodrama, and New Queer Cinema,...
