Netflix’s true crime series Homicide: New York’s first installment, “Carnegie Deli Massacre,” opens with the brutal murders of Jennifer Stahl, Charles “Trey” Helliwell, and Stephen King. The episode features NYPD Lieutenant Roger Parrino; Barbara Butcher, the second woman ever hired for the role of Death Investigator in Manhattan; and retired NYPD Det. Irma Rivera. The case plagues these veteran law enforcement professionals enough to revisit the evidence. The deaths seem to have weighed heavily on producer Dick Wolf too. “Tragedy on Rye,” a season 14 episode of his signature show Law & Order, is based on the tragic incident.
The crime also haunted New York. The murders happened on May 10, 2001, during a period when city crime had been on a downswing, and media at the time dredged up fears Times Square would go back to its not-so-distant wild and dangerous earlier character. Like the detectives in the show, it...

When presenting his list of new streaming titles for July, Nathaniel paid special attention to the 1984 Woody Allen comedy Broadway Danny Rose. It was the first Allen film he ever saw, and the first time Mia Farrow got serious Oscar buzz for her collaborations with the director. Previously, her closest brush with the Academy Awards had come with Rosemary's Baby, way back in 1968. But, of course, as we know, that buzz never materialized into an actual nomination, and Farrow remains Oscarless to this day, despite a filmography full of incredible performances. Indeed, this series could have an extensive miniseries dedicated exclusively to the actress, so vast is her number of "Almost There" cases.
That miniseries might happen one day, but, for now, let's focus only on Broadway Danny Rose and Mia Farrow's brilliant work in it…...

The Austrian director torments everyone, including the audience, in this grotesque tale set in the Italian resort out of season
Wretchedness, sadness and confrontational grotesquerie once again come together in a movie by Ulrich Seidl, although it’s leavened by something almost – but not quite – like ordinary human compassion. If you’ve seen Seidl’s other movies you’ll know what to expect and you’ll know to steel yourself for horror. Perhaps this one doesn’t take Seidl’s creative career much further down the road to (or away from) perdition, but it is managed with unflinching conviction, a tremendous compositional sense and an amazing flair for discovering extraordinary locations.
The Italian coastal resort of Rimini in winter is an eerie, melancholy place; Seidl shows it in freezing mist and actual snow. Refugees huddle on the street and some groups of German and Austrian tourists take what must be...

HBO says that six Woody Allen films available for streaming on HBO Max will remain on the service after some online called out the streamer for hosting those films alongside the new docuseries “Allen v. Farrow.”
“These titles will remain available in the library to allow viewers to make their own informed decisions about screening the work,” HBO said in a statement to TheWrap.
“Allen v. Farrow,” which premiered Sunday on HBO and for streaming on HBO Max, examines Dylan Farrow’s accusations of sexual abuse against her adopted father Allen. Others online then noticed that six films, including five starring Mia Farrow, are all available on the streamer. While the films aren’t prominently displayed or promoted, the films available for streaming through HBO Max for those looking for them are “Scoop,” “Broadway Danny Rose,” “Shadows and Fog,” “Radio Days,” “Another Woman” and “September.”

Two-thirds of the way into the pilot of Amazon Studios’ The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, there’s a moment that underscores just how unflappable Rachel Brosnahan’s uptown Jewish housewife heroine, Miriam ‘Midge’ Maisel, truly is.
Her business suit-wearing wannabe stand-up hack of a husband, Joel (Michael Zegen), drops the news on the eve of what will be a very busy Yom Kippur that he’s leaving Midge for his secretary Penny—and with his wife’s suitcase no less.
“You’re leaving me for a girl who can’t figure out how to sharpen pencils?” stings Midge.
“I need to start over,” Joel groans.
“With her? She wins?” Midge asks—without tears—before slamming Joel. “Can I just say you have the worst timing ever?”
Then comes her punchline: “Grab some pens on the way out, you’re going to need them.

In comedy, timing is everything, and for the comedy series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, its timing couldn’t be more perfect.
In November, Amazon Prime dropped eight episodes of the period series, a sort of Mad Men meets Broadway Danny Rose, in its tale of a young uptown Manhattan divorcee who tries to take the mic as a stand-up comedienne in a chauvinistic 1958 with her female manager who also is being taken less seriously by her male peers. With its fairy tale billboards of its title character donning a red fashionable coat amid fedora-wearing trenchcoated men and its starry children’s book logo, the Mrs. Maisel marketing appeared to be targeted at those Amazon Prime families who might be sidelined at home during the holidays. But upon watching the series, one would soon realize much how Mrs. Maisel spoke to the #MeToo and Time’s Up era around us.

You have to go back to Argentina ’78 for a World Cup played out against a more politically charged backdrop than Russia 2018.
The quadrennial tournament, which gets underway Thursday and runs through July 15, has been readied with Russia ever-present on the global news agenda due to wars in Ukraine and Syria, the Olympic doping scandal, meddling in Western elections and the poisoning of Sergei and Yulia Skripal. Those controversies go some way to explaining why a handful of world leaders have decided not to attend the competition.
Just as Brazil 2014 kicked off with major protests due to the exorbitant cost of stadia, Russia 2018 has its own set of concerns on the ground.

“Get Out” got a huge Oscar boost by winning Best Original Screenplay at Sunday’s Writers Guild Awards, while “Call Me by Your Name” picked up Best Adapted Screenplay as expected. Now they will try to replicate their victories at the Oscars, which has matched both WGA winners 12 times since WGA standardized its categories 33 years ago.
More than any other guild, there are a lot of asterisks when it comes to WGA champs and comparisons with Oscar. There have been a number of eventual screenplay Oscar winners who were ineligible at WGA, including four this century: 2010’s “The King’s Speech (Best Original Screenplay), 2012’s “Django Unchained” (Best Original Screenplay), 2013’s “12 Years a Slave” (Best Adapted Screenplay) and 2014’s “Birdman” (Best Original Screenplay). This year, of course, Martin McDonagh’s original script “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” was ineligible.

A clutch of comedians chat in a New York cafe, sharing stories about a legendary theatrical manager named Danny Rose (Woody Allen). A quirky fellow, Rose liked to throw his weight behind dead-end novelty acts: one-armed jugglers, one-legged tapdancers, and wine glass musicians. But the best story – around which this madcap movie circles – is that of Danny’s relationship with Lou Canova (Nick Forte); or, more specifically, Danny’s relationship with Lou’s muse, Tina (a barely recognisable Mia Farrow).
Lou is a pretty lousy cabaret singer who fortuitously lands a gig at the Waldorf. But he won’t perform without Tina in attendance. Danny goes to pick her up, but in doing so triggers an absurd series of events that sees the two of them on the run from Italian mobsters. Suffice to say, Allen’s...

It was a flash mob set inside of a Target that earned Todrick Hall the approval of Beyonce and put him on the map back in 2011, but it was a different flash mob altogether that helped score him his new MTV series. For one of the initial pitch meetings, Hall recruited his friends and collaborators to put on a surprise song and dance performance for executive producers Brian Graden and Danny Rose. Set to an original song called “Put Me on TV,” the flash mob is what sold the execs on the idea that eventually became Todrick’s reality show premiering Monday.

Tottenham Hotspur had a relatively positive Premier League 2014/15 campaign and finished in fifth place, just six points behind those coveted Champions League places. Essentially they did ‘a Tottenham’. Mauricio Pochettino’s side looked brilliant at times but couldn’t maintain their challenge for the top four, dropping points against Burnley, Stoke and Aston`Villa during the business end of last season.
FIFA-wise Tottenham represent a sturdy pair of hands who can do you proud against West Ham, Newcastle and Stoke but against the top teams they don’t represent enough quality for you to continuously challenge your mate who has gleefully selected Man United. Spurs’ big-game players such as Christian Eriksen, Hugo Lloris and (this year’s) Harry Kane will guarantee you some luxurious button-pressing on FIFA 16 but have the North London side improved enough during the summer transfer window to begin to compete with big boys?...

All week long our writers will debate: Which was the greatest film year of the past half century. Click here for a complete list of our essays. How to decide in the grand scheme of things which film year stands above all others? History gives us no clear methodology to unravel this thorny but extremely important question. Is it the year with the highest average score of movies? So a year that averages out to a B + might be the winner over a field strewn with B’s, despite a few A +’s. Or do a few masterpieces lift up a year so far that whatever else happened beyond those three or four films is of no consequence? Both measures are worthy, and the winner by either of those would certainly be a year not to be sneezed at. But I contend the only true measure of a year’s...

Everyone knows Woody Allen. At least, everyone thinks they know Woody Allen. His plumage is easily identifiable: horn-rimmed glasses, baggy suit, wispy hair, kvetching demeanor, ironic sense of humor, acute fear of death. As is his habitat: New York City, though recently he has flown as far afield as London, Barcelona, and Paris. His likes are well known: Bergman, Dostoevsky, New Orleans jazz. So too his dislikes: spiders, cars, nature, Wagner records, the entire city of Los Angeles. Whether or not these traits represent the true Allen, who’s to say? It is impossible to tell, with Allen, where cinema ends and life begins, an obfuscation he readily encourages. In the late nineteen-seventies, disillusioned with the comedic success he’d found making such films as Sleeper (1973), Love and Death (1975), and Annie Hall (1977), he turned for darker territory with Stardust Memories (1980), a film in which, none too surprisingly, he plays a...

Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland battled out an entertaining 2-2 draw at the Stadium of Light on Saturday – in spite of the fact that Spurs had around 64% of the possession and had 27 attempts at goal compared to Sunderland’s 10.
Spurs took an early lead when Emmanuel Adebayor’s shot from just outside the box was parried out by goalkeeper Vito Mannone straight in to the path of Nacer Chadli, who coolly finished for this third goal of the season after two minutes.
A mere minute later, Sunderland’s Adam Johnson had weaved in and out of a number of Spurs defenders before his deflected effort crept in to the net in between a flailing Hugo Lloris and Danny Rose.
A frantic start saw several other chances for each team to score more goals in the first few minutes, but they went in level at half time,...

Benoit Assou-Ekotto has been completely left out of the Spurs squads for both the Premier League and the UEFA Europa League campaigns this season – this is in spite of the fact that only 23 players have been named in both, even though clubs are actually allowed to name 25 – casting a serious doubt over his footballing future.
The Cameroon international is now out in the cold, with Danny Rose and Ben Davies well ahead of him in the left back pecking order at White Hart Lane and, after having failed to earn a move away from the club in the summer transfer window, he probably faces at least four months of total inactivity until the January window opens.

Spurs left back Danny Rose has received a shock call-up to Roy Hodgson’s latest England squad.
Injuries to Manchester United’s Luke Shaw and Arsenal’s Kieran Gibbs have left an opening in the left back slot, with the only fit recognised player in that position being Leighton Baines following Ashley Cole’s retirement.
The call-up emphasises a dramatic change in fortunes for Rose, who was thought to be nothing more than a squad player at White Hart Lane this season after the Lilywhites signed Ben Davies from Swansea City. However, having signed a new five year contract at the club, he has started the season very well and is currently their first choice left back.

According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur are willing to let their Cameroon international left back Benoit Assou-Ekotto leave the club on a free transfer.
Assou-Ekotto, who was loaned out to Harry Redknapp’s Queens Park Rangers in the Championship last season, has been pushed down the pecking order by both the arrival of Ben Davies from Swansea City and Danny Rose’s emergence last year – the latter of whom has recently signed a new five year contract.
The left back has one year left on his contract at White Hart Lane, but Spurs are willing to cut their losses as they streamline their squad under new boss Mauricio Pochettino – particularly as he disgraced himself at the World Cup this summer by head-butting a team-mate on the pitch during Cameroon’s defeat to Croatia in the group stages.

When Spurs signed Ben Davies in a double deal with Michel Vorm from Swansea City earlier this summer – a deal that saw Gylfi Sigurdsson and £3.5 million go the other way – it was generally considered to be the answer to the club’s long-standing left back prayers.
It’s a position the club have struggled to satisfactorily fill for years and last season epitomised this fact more than ever. Benoit Assou-Ekotto was sent out on loan to Queens Park Rangers and he certainly won’t be going back to White Hart Lane after his World Cup head-butting exploits. Danny Rose flattered to deceive for much of the season and, when he was injured, Kyle Naughton and Jan Vertonghen were forced to deputise in a position that isn’t favoured by either of them.

The 16 year old starlet is currently on the books of Oh Leuven in his home country and is said to be attracting the attention of several big clubs in Belgium, including current domestic champions Anderlecht.

Tottenham fans will be peering anxiously over their shoulders this morning after watching their side get decimated for the second time this season by Manchester City.
City routed Spurs at White Hart Lane on Wednesday night in a comprehensive 5-1 win that sends them top of the Premier League and leaves the Londoners in a less comfortable fifth place.
Tottenham are now three points adrift of fourth-placed Liverpool and only a point above sixth-placed Everton with their Champions League hopes starting to waver.
Spurs can point to some fairly horrendous decisions from the referee and his linesman in that Michael Dawson saw a perfectly good goal disallowed and Danny Rose sent off despite winning the ball.
But before that they were picked apart by City with too much ease and look as far away from title contenders as they have done in years.

Emmanuel Adebayor bagged a brace either side of a Chico Flores own goal as Tottenham Hotspur ensured Swansea’s winless Premier League run extended to eight matches.
Wilfried Bony netted a consolation at the Liberty Stadium as the Swans saw injuries hamper them yet again. Tim Sherwood meanwhile took his team level with fourth placed Liverpool.
Jonjo Shelvey twice fired wide in the opening six minutes for hosts Swansea. He later worked Hugo Lloris after winning possession from Spurs centre back Vlad Chiriches. The hosts continued their strong start when Bony shot off target.
Ivory Coast international bony then cracked a venomous 25-yarder off the bar midway through the first half after Shelvey broke forward and find him. Tottenham, by contrast offered little, but then scored against the run of play.

Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert wants to bring Tottenham Hotspur defender Kyle Naughton to the West Midlands.
The Sunday Mirror reports that the 25-year-old fullback could be available for a cut-price £3 million. Lambert is keen on Naughton, who played under him at Norwich City two seasons ago.
Naughton has been in and out of the team at Spurs, covering either right or left back when injury and suspensions have left the likes of Kyle Walker and Danny Rose unavailable. He and Walker joined Tottenham together from Sheffield United in 2009 for undisclosed fees.
Since Tim Sherwood took over as Hotspur head coach from Andre Villas-Boas, Naughton has played just one game. Villa have chopped and changed their fullbacks this season with Leandro Bacuna and another Blades academy product Matthew Lowton getting games on the right.
Joe Bennett and Antonio Luna – a summer signing from Sevilla – have vied for the left back berth.

Tottenham Hotspur Football Club are currently enjoying a new lease of life under new boss Tim Sherwood.
Following Andre Villas-Boas’ dismissal from the club, the former Spurs midfielder was promoted from his position as the club’s Technical Director to the position of manager and his arrival has coincided with a run of three wins and one draw in the Premier League, giving him ten points from a possible twelve so far – including Sunday’s memorable victory at Manchester United.
That said, Spurs’ defensive record still hasn’t been great. Following an impressive start to the season, two horror shows at Manchester City and at home to Liverpool have accompanied numerous other games in which Spurs have failed to keep a clean sheet. Indeed, including the League Cup match against West Ham, Spurs have conceded in four out of the five games in...

Tottenham Hotspur picked up a third win under Tim Sherwood and victory at Old Trafford for the second season running as Emmanuel Adebayor and Christian Eriksen goals sunk Manchester United.
A fourth home defeat of the campaign for David Moyes’s Red Devils leaves the Premier League champions with little hope of defending their crown. United are now 11 points behind current leaders Arsenal. Danny Welbeck’s strike in reply on New Year’s Day proved the smallest crumb of comfort.
Sherwood made three changes to the Spurs team that won at home to Stoke City last time out for this trip to the Theatre of Dreams. First choice fullbacks Kyle Walker and Danny Rose returned. Box-to-box midfielder Paulinho missed out, however, after damaging ankle ligaments. Etienne Capoue replaced him whilst Kyle Naughton and Zeki Fryers dropped out.
Moyes fielded an XI with four alterations from the narrow away win at Norwich.

Premier League champions Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have drawn their last two meetings. They start 2014 level on points and next to one another in the table both looking to close the gap on the top four.
David Moyes’s Red Devils have hit fine form in their festive fixtures by recording six successive victories after failing to win the first three matches in December. Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood meanwhile got the second win of his reign against Stoke on Sunday.
Spurs are also buoyed by the fact they won on their last visit to Old Trafford in September 2012. Clint Dempsey netted the winner then, but has re-joined former club Fulham on loan from Mls franchise Seattle Sounders.

United will assess Wayne Rooney’s groin injury that kept him out of the away victory at Norwich last time out. The England talisman has been unable to train and remains doubtful.

Goals in either half from Emmanuel Adebayor helped Tottenham Hotspur put a bad week behind them with an absorbing 3-2 victory at Southampton.
The hosts had led through Adam Lallana at St Mary’s, but Adebayor cancelled out that opener before Jos Hooiveld put through his own net to give Spurs the lead.
Rickie Lambert then levelled for the Saints, but Adebayor struck again as Tottenham caretaker Tim Sherwood won his first game in charge.
Southampton went ahead on 12 minutes through skipper Lallana after a fluid team move. Danny Fox teed him up for a precise shot following a clever turn to find the bottom corner off the post. It all started
Jay Rodriguez later curled over as the hosts almost punished Spurs fullback Danny Rose for giving the ball away. Tottenham then quickly levelled as Roberto Soldado was set away by a long ball and Adebayor volleyed in his fabulous cross from close range.
