“Another ‘Forbidden Fruit’ Exploitation Relic”
By Raymond Benson
Here’s another one, folks! Another entry in the “Forbidden Fruit: The Golden Age of the Exploitation Picture” series, this time it’s Volume 8. Presented by Kino Lorber in association with Something Weird Video, we have for your pleasure the controversial “hoax” documentary, Ingagi (1930), a shocking example of racism and circus sideshow-style cinematic exhibition.
There have always existed what have been termed in the motion picture industry “exploitation films,” even back in the silent days. The 1930s and much of the 1940s, however, saw a deluge of cheap, not-even-“B” pictures made, usually independently of Hollywood and marketed in guerilla fashion as “educational” adult fare. You know the type. Reefer Madness. Child Bride. Mom and Dad (all previous titles released in the Forbidden Fruit series).

Guest reviewer Matt Rovner delves into the cultural riches of ethnic films specially made for speakers of the Yiddish language. Some were filmed in Poland and others in New Jersey (according to Edgar Ulmer!)… and if they seem obscure they’re nevertheless culturally significant as a record of a language that’s fast disappearing. Among the gems is a significant folk-horror tale and an original non-musical drama about Tevye the Milkman’s problems with his daughter and the oppressive laws of the Czar.

The trailer for upcoming indie horror thriller Those Who Deserve to Die becomes increasingly unnerving and unsettling as it plays. At first, it appears to be a twist on the 'little girl gone evil' sub-genre. Then it becomes far more disturbing. Bret Wood directed, which may help to explain things; he has helmed several documentaries as well as the feature films Psychopathia Sexualis and The Unwanted. Ahead of its release, here is the official synopsis: "Two stories unfold in an idyllic Southern town. A series of gruesome murders occur, committed by a caped figure accompanied by a diabolical young girl (Alice Lewis). At the same time, an injured war veteran (Joe Sykes) returns to attend college, and becomes emotionally attached to a social worker (Rachel...

With the spotlight on the Stonewall uprising’s 50th anniversary this month, several treasured landmark Lgbtq documentaries have been restored and are being re-released for a limited time in theaters, including Jennie Livingston’s Paris Is Burning and the era-defining Before Stonewall. But among the gifts to be cherished from this renewed focus is Frank Simon’s 1968 film The Queen. It remains obscure to most, but now with a 4K restoration produced by Bret Wood of Kino Lorber — building on work done by UCLA Film & Television Archive, Outfest UCLA Legacy...

Girl Talk is a weekly look at women in film — past, present, and future.
From July 20 – July 26, New York City’s BAMcinématek presents “Pioneers: First Women Filmmakers,” a new program in collaboration with Kino Lorber and The Library of Congress. Produced for Kino Lorber by Bret Wood and curated by historian Shelley Stamp, the series includes a number of brand-new 2K restorations of classic (and often forgotten) films, mostly focused on female directors from America’s rich silent-era in cinema.
As the series’ official synopsis notes, “as was frequently the case, women directors remained uncredited or were co-credited as director, even though for all intents and purposes, they were the de-facto directors and primary creative forces of the film.” For every Alice Guy-Blaché, there was a Ruth Ann Baldwin or an Ida May Park or a Mabel Normand, and that’s just the start of the rich history of women behind the camera.

This Blu is a fascinating hybrid of experimental film and historical documentary by Bill Morrison of Decasia fame. Lost film history and the vanished era of the Dawson Gold Rush blend into one story — all touched off by the discovery of tons of rare silent film, buried in the cold ground of the Canadian Yukon. And Donald Trump’s in there too! In the show, not the snow.

Edward G. Robinson uncovers another killer, but this time he’s after a Nazi mass murderer, not an insurance salesman. Orson Welles’ most conventional thriller is a masterpiece of style and judgment, with a good sense of time and place – and a lot of expressive shadows. How does this new Blu-ray shape up in comparison to earlier presentations?

A happy discovery! This is a major late- silent-era gem on the order of Von Sternberg’s Docks of New York — a special treat that will please fans of director William Wellman — he revisited parts of it in a later talkie. It’s also a key movie in our education/adoration of the maverick actress Louise Brooks, the erotic sensation too hot and too independent for Hollywood.

At last, an expressionist silent classic that takes full advantage of cinematic principles. The legendary E.A. Dupont goes in for subjective-emotional effects of which Hitchcock would approve, and cameraman Karl Freund and effects wizard Eugen Schüfftan pull off spectacular visuals and special effects. No wonder this was a huge hit in America, it’s way ahead of its time (and ours, in some ways).

Take one fiercely individual auteur fed up with the Hollywood game, put him in Kyoto with a full Japanese film company, and the result is a picture critics have been trying to figure out ever since. It’s a realistic story told in a highly artificial visual style, in un-subtitled Japanese. And its writer-director intended it to play for American audiences.

In 2015, Kino Lorber launched the successful crowdfunding campaign for “Pioneers of African-American Cinema,” a DVD box set that featured more than 20 feature-length and short films made by groundbreaking African American directors from 1915 to 1946.
The funds raised from the Kickstarter allowed the project to expand from a modest collection of films into a monumental five-disc collection, loaded with extras and an 80-page booklet. Now, the entire box set is available to stream on Netflix.

Last week Kino Lorber launched a new Kickstarter aimed to fund their latest project “Pioneers: First Women Filmmakers,” a collection of important American films directed by women, including Alice Guy Blaché, Lois Weber, Nell Shipman, Dorothy Davenport, and many more, between 1910 and 1929.
The ambitious project will be presented in association with the Library of Congress and be the largest commercially-released video collection of films by female helmers. It will include HD restorations of both the most important films of the era, as well as lesser-known works, including short films, fragments and isolated chapters of incomplete serials.
“By showcasing the ambitious, inventive films from the golden age of women directors, we can get a sense of what was lost by the marginalization of women to ‘support roles’ within the film industry,” reads the Kickstarter page.

Black Cinema History? We didn't hear a peep about any such thing back in film school. Sometime in the 1980s PBS would broadcast a barely watchable (see sample just below) copy of a creaky silent 'race movie' about a 'backsliding' black man in trouble with the law, the Lord and his wife in that order. The cultural segregation has been almost complete. It wasn't until even later that I read articles about a long-extinct nationwide circuit of movie theaters catering to black audiences, wherever the populations were big enough to support the trade.

Raro Video resurrects an exploitation goodie masquerading as another bit of cheap Eurosleaze, Hitch Hike (aka Autostop Rosso Sangue) a 1977 thriller from Italian director Pasquale Festa Campanile. Like a tawdry version of an early Polanski effort, it’s a significant anomaly of its ilk for several reasons, the most notable being its director, usually known as a fixture of 1970’s Italian-style comedy (aka commedia all’italiana). Adapted from the novel The Violence and the Fury by Peter Kern, it’s headlined by Franco Nero, French actress Corinne Clery (the title character from infamous The Story of O, 1975) and grindhouse staple David Hess (The Last House on the Left, 1972), while predictable story elements spiked with moments of brutal violence should be enough to rejuvenate interest in a title not often screened in the Us (despite its initial box office success in Europe).

Courtney Patterson (l.) and Zoe Cooper star in The Little Death.
The sexually charged 2010 independent drama-thriller The Little Death takes on the rather unique subject of early 20th Century brothels and that era’s psychology and philosophy on the “immorality” of prostitution.
The Little Death tells the story of a strong-willed reformer (Courtney Patterson) who ventures into a turn-of-the-century brothel to confront its owner (Daniel May) and liberate a young woman (Christie Vozniak) whom she believes is being held there in sexual captivity. While the brothel’s owner attempts mesmerize and seduce the lovely would-be rescuer, a meek student (Clifton Guterman) becomes a pawn in the increasingly risque game of sexual cat-and-mouse that is unfolding.
Based on the 1905 play Death and Devil by German playwright Frank Wedekind (Spring Awakening), which is integrated with Anton Chekhov’s 1888 short story A Nervous Breakdown,...

We were satisfied with the image quality in comparison with the existing master from our own 1995 release, but were disappointed that it lacked the sharpness, clarity and stability of our recently-upgraded master of The General. Tim Lanza of the Douris Corp.
