The "Glee" cast and crew recently reunited in solidarity with the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. On Aug. 23, stars including Heather Morris, Darren Criss, Jenna Ushkowitz, and Kevin McHale, as well as writers, producers, and choreographers for the hit television series joined the picket line in Burbank, CA. Marching alongside former coworkers, the group made sure to include a special shoutout to the late Naya Rivera, who played Santana Lopez on the show and died after a tragic boating accident in July 2020.
At the protests, a few of the picketers carried signage displaying famous one-liners from "Glee." Morris's sign featured Santana and her quote, "The only straight I am is straight-up broke," while former crew member Meg Doyle held up another screen grab of Santana saying, "I'm about to go all Lima Heights." Ushkowitz's sign also showed a snap of her character Tina Cohen-Chang saying, "I'm dehydrated from all the striking.

that was made with the support of AT&T and the Tribeca Festival, Nardeep Khurmi’s “Land of Gold” effectively distills the post-apocalyptic horrors of “The Last of Us” into a road movie about two brown Americans trying to survive the long drive across today’s United States.
Instead of traveling West from Boston to Salt Lake City, our reluctant Punjabi hero and his precocious Latina stowaway make their way East from California to Maine; instead of zombified fungus monsters who hunger for human flesh, the film’s surrogate father-daughter duo are forced to navigate 3,000 equally dangerous miles of overeager Ice agents and suspicious white convenience store clerks.
If contrived plotting and clumsy dialogue leave Khurmi’s quasi-neorealist debut feeling almost as fanciful as HBO’s mushroom holocaust, the bond that it forges between a truck driver and his human cargo is held together by a rich tapestry of well-worn truths.

The Illegal, a film that recently premiered on Amazon Prime Video starring Suraj Sharma, Adil Hussain and Shweta Tripathi among others, is a gritty and realistic tale of a young film school student from middle-class India who is forced to drop out to support his family while staying in the United States as an undocumented worker.
According to the 'Life of Pi' actor, Suraj Sharma, the film's story was a lot similar to his personal life experiences. He shares, "During my time in America, I used to go to all these Indian restaurants for my 'Ghar Ka Khaana', where I came across all these Indian people and their back stories, which gave me a very sharp and clear insight of their life. Over the course of years, I realized what intense backgrounds they come from, how they are pushing themselves to provide for their families and fulfill their goals.

The Illegal (film on Amazon Prime); Cast: Suraj Sharma, Shweta Tripathi, Adil Hussain, Neelima Azim, Iqbal Theba, Hannah Masi, Jay Ali; Direction: Danish Renzu; Rating: * * * and 1/2 (three and a half stars)
By Vinayak Chakravorty
You'd think you have seen this before. A young boy from middle-class India lands in the United States chasing a dream, and his struggle for sustenance becomes portrait of the grind that almost every immigrant must endure.
If Danish Renzu's film is outstanding despite the note of familiarity, it is because of the sheer authenticity with which the writer-director tells his tale. The film is unflinching in tone, yet sensitive enough while dissecting the reality it presents. Renzu uses his crisp runtime of 86 minutes well, to set up nuanced storytelling.
Unlike most films pertaining to the subject, "The Illegal" is not about immigrants who enter the US unlawfully. It is about people who come in with legitimate papers,...

The Illegal movie review is here. The 2019 Indian American English-language drama film is written and directed by Danish Renzu. Produced by Tara Tucker, and Danish Renzu, The Illegal stars Suraj Sharma, Iqbal Theba and Shweta Tripathi in the lead roles. The Illegal is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
The Illegal movie review
Of people, places, dreams, reality and spaces, Danish Renzu’s 'The Illegal' deals with these vicious cycles of an American dream of an Indian with heart and leaves behind some fodder for thought.
Running on the familiar plot line of an Indian immigrant struggling to pursue the great American dream – somewhat similar in theme with Mira Nair’s 2006 'Namesake' starring Irrfan Khan and Tabu.
Danish Renzu’s 'The Illegal' works because it’s weaved with a heart that bleeds with earnestness, need and melancholy.

Flabbergasted on a Zoom call, “Nomadland” director Chloe Zhao accepted the Golden Globe for best director on Sunday night. Between gratitude and marveling over the historic moment, as the first person of Asian descent and second woman ever to win the prize, came a somber question.
Zhao was asked for her thoughts on increased violence against Asian American Pacific Islander communities in America, an abhorrent trend of hate crimes in the past months that only began to gain national media attention recently thanks to celebrity outcry and the social media reach of activists like Nobel prize nominee Amanda Nguyen.
“I sometimes feel like people with so much hate, maybe they just hate themselves,” Zhao pondered of recent attacks that have targeted elderly Aapi people and have largely been correlated to tensions over Covid-19 — specifically hateful rhetoric from the former Trump administration, which often referred to the global pandemic as “the China virus.

SAG-AFTRA members are speaking out about hate crimes and discrimination against Asian-Americans, many of whom have been targeted by their fellow citizens during the coronavirus pandemic. President Donald Trump, who is a member of the union, has even called the virus the “Kung Flu.”

Update: Thursday, 4:30 Pm. A search and rescue operation has turned into a recovery effort for Glee’s Naya Rivera. The actress has been missing since Wednesday when she disappeared while swimming at Lake Piru north of Los Angeles.
“We’re presuming that an accident happened and we’re presuming she drowned in the lake,” Deputy Chris Dyer said at a news conference Thursday afternoon. “The goal is still to bring Miss Rivera home to her family,” he said.

Actress Naya Rivera is missing and presumed dead after her four-year-old son was found alone in a boat in California on Wednesday afternoon.
The Ventura Sheriff's Department said that they kicked off a search for a drowning victim on Lake Piru at around 1pm.
The former Glee star, 33, reportedly arrived at the lake and rented a boat, before taking her son aboard.
Three hours later, at around 4pm, the boat was found with her child aboard, but Rivera was not at the scene.
Her car was still parked at the lake and was later removed by authorities.
According to reports, the alarm was raised when someone on another boat noticed the boat was drifting with a child asleep on board.
It has also been reported that Rivera's life vest was still on the vessel.
“There’s a lot of challenges in a reservoir this size, at times with visibility,” Capt.

"A party crasher that is out of this world." Quiver Distr. has released an official trailer for an indie horror comedy titled Useless Humans, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Stephen Ohl. This sounds and looks like one of those extra wacky, shoestring budget indie films that is ambitious but actually impressively entertaining. A 30th birthday -- and the survival of mankind -- are left hanging in the balance after a mysterious alien creature crashes the party, forcing four childhood friends to save the night. Starring Josh Zuckerman, Rushi Kota, Davida Williams, Luke Youngblood, Edy Ganem, Maya Kazan, Joey Kern, and Iqbal Theba. This surprisingly looks like some good, stupid fun with a terrible man-in-suit monster and more shenanigans. Might actually be a good time, I want to watch this. Check it out below. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Stephen Ohl's Useless Humans, direct from YouTube:...

Filmmaker Lena Khan, who helmed The Tiger Hunter and the upcoming Disney+ movie Flora and Ulysses, has signed with UTA for worldwide representation.
Khan is in post-production on Flora & Ulysses, starring Alyson Hannigan, Ben Schwartz and Matilda Lawler. Based on the popular children’s book Flora and Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures by Kate Dicamillo, the story centers on the imaginative, creative and cynical 10-year-old Flora (Lawler), who could hardly predict that the little squirrel she saved from a tragic accident would be born anew and transformed into a superhero with the powers of strength, misspelled poetry and an uncanny knack for helping her and the lovable but broken people in her life become a family again. Gil Netter is producing, and Brad Copeland adapted the script.

Sundance Selects has acquired U .S. rights to Henry Barrial’s Uber-inspired “DriverX” starring Patrick Fabian (“Better Call Saul”) and Tanya Clarke (“Banshee”).
The movie stars Fabian as Leonard Moore, a 50-something stay-at-home dad in Los Angeles who is desperate to find a job and signs up to drive for the popular ride-share company DriverX, leading his marriage to fray at home. The film follows Leonard as he navigates L.A.’s late-night, Tinder-fueled party scene while adjusting to the new technology and the young millennials he drives around.
“The film was inspired by my own experiences as an Uber driver while waiting in vain for another movie to get green-lit,” said Barriel, who also wrote the script. “From the first moment where I was hired via text, without ever meeting or speaking to another human being, I felt something different was happening here that might be worth investigating in a film.

"You never win with violence. You only win when you maintain your dignity."
I've got a fantastic trailer for you to watch today for a new film called Green Book that is filled with emotion, power, and a story that is relevant to today's world. The movie stars Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali and it tells the true story of a friendship that "transcended race, class and the 1962 Mason-Dixon line." Here's the synopsis:
When Tony Lip (Mortensen), a bouncer from an Italian-American neighborhood in the Bronx, is hired to drive Dr. Don Shirley (Ali), a world-class Black pianist, on a concert tour from Manhattan to the Deep South, they must rely on “The Green Book” to guide them to the few establishments that were then safe for African-Americans. Confronted with racism, danger—as well as unexpected humanity and humor—they are forced to set aside differences to survive and thrive...

"You never win with violence. You only win when you maintain your dignity." Universal has debuted an excellent first trailer for Green Book, an Amblin production directed by Peter Farrelly, making his solo directorial debut (with a drama) after directing numerous hit comedies with his brother Bobby. Green Book is about a bouncer at a New York nightclub who takes on a job as a pianist's chauffeur during a tour in the Deep South in the 1960s. The title is a reference to the "Negro Motorist Green Book", an annual guidebook for African-American roadtrippers, commonly referred to simply as the Green Book. Mahershala Ali stars as Don Shirley, with Viggo Mortensen as Tony Lip, and the cast includes Linda Cardellini, Don Stark, P.J. Byrne, Brian Stepanek, Sebastian Maniscalco, and Iqbal Theba. This looks fantastic, and I'm looking forward to seeing it mostly for Mortensen and Ali's relationship in here. Two of my favorite actors.

Following the news that “Glee” star Mark Salling died of an apparent suicide on Tuesday, a select number of former cast and crew members of the series took to social media to pay their respects. The majority of individuals involved with the Fox musical have remained silent thus far, likely given the controversy Salling — who played Puck in the series — was embroiled in at the time of his death. In 2015, the actor was arrested on child pornography charges, leading to his removal from “Adi Shankar’s Gods and Secrets” and culminating in an eventual guilty plea. He was facing up to four to seven years in prison and was scheduled for sentencing in March.
The list of people who did speak out after the news of Salling’s death broke includes stars Matthew Morrison, Jane Lynch, and Iqbal Theba. Morrison, who played glee club teacher Will Schuester, posted an Instagram...

Reza Aslan has met Jezus.
Yes, thats “Jezus,” with a “z.” He’s the leader of a doomsday cult in Hawai’i, and “weirdly looks like Jesus, who thinks he’s receiving messages from the heavens,” Aslan said. “He has a vision for the end of the world, a catastrophic flood that’s a result of climate change.”
As a result, Jezus’ community is building an arc for the coming flood. Sounds crazy – until you realize there’s some truth in what may eventually be coming. “What they are afraid of is real, climate change is a real thing!”
Aslan, an author and religion scholar whose credits also include consulting on HBO’s “The Leftovers,” is hoping to find common religious ground in a world where that seems pretty impossible.

Visual Communications (Vc), the nation’s premier Asian Pacific American media arts center, announced the Opening, Closing and Centerpiece film programs for the upcoming 32nd edition of the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival (Laapff) running April 21-28, 2016. This annual film celebration will be presented across Los Angeles from Little Tokyo to Downtown Los Angeles to Koreatown and to West Hollywood featuring 140 films from over 20 countries.
Vc will celebrate 32 years as Southern California’s largest and most prestigious film festival of its kind. The Laapff launches the pre-celebration of Asian Pacific Heritage Month through this year’s slate of over 130 films from both Asian Pacific American and Asian international directors from over 20 countries. For over three decades, the Festival has presented nearly 5,000 films and shorts by Asian American and Asian international artists.
Opening this year’s Festival at the Aratani Theatre in Little Tokyo is the World Premiere of dramatic comedy "The Tiger Hunter" from an amazing new director Lena Khan. The film centers upon Sami Malik (Danny Pudi of NBC TVs - "Community"), a young South Asian man who travels to America to become an engineer in order to impress his childhood crush and live up to the legacy of his father — a legendary tiger hunter back home. When Sami's job unexpectedly falls through and he ends up living in a tiny co-op with two oddball roommates, he must resort to constructing an elaborate charade with the misfit accomplices in hopes of convincing his sweetheart that he's far more successful than he truly is...or perhaps ever could be. As Sami tries to pull off the farce of a lifetime, what ensues is a series of adventures involving outlandish schemes, an arch-nemesis in an absurd office environment, and a somewhat functional Dodge Charger with a character of its own. Together, although their plans may contradict each other with terrible consequences, Sami and his rag-tag group must work together while meeting the usual host of obstacles — the "usual," that is, if back-alley brawls, trips to prison, or catastrophic LSD-related misunderstandings are just your usual, everyday fare. The film also stars Rizwan Manji, Jon Heder, Karen David, Kevin Pollak, Sam Page and Iqbal Theba.
Jonathan Hua Lang Lim’s powerful drama "Pali Road" starring Michelle Chen, Sung Kang, Elizabeth Sung and Jackson Rathbone will close out the eight - day film extravaganza at the Directors Guild of America on April 28, 2016. "Pali Road" centers on Lily (Michelle Chen), a Chinese doctor doing her residency in a Hawaiian hospital under Dr. Kayne (Sung Kang). She had fallen in love with schoolteacher Neil (Jackson Rathbone) — at least this is what she remembers. But after a terrible car accident, Lily wakes up to discover, in horror, a married life with Dr. Kayne, that includes a 5-year-old son she has never seen. With everyone around her denying Neil's existence, Lily begins to question her own sanity, but memories of Neil force her to embark on a journey to retrace her past and discover the truth.
The Laapff Centerpiece offering this year is the moving and insightful documentary "Tyrus" from director Pamela Tom which brings the life of Chinese American painter, production illustrator, lithographer, and kite builder Tyrus Wong to the big screen. Wong is best known for his concept art for Walt Disney's feature animated film Bambi. His strikingly beautiful concept paintings and sketches continue to influence the work of generations of animators and production designers. "Tyrus" celebrates not only the beauty of his art, but reveals to a larger audience a lesser known part of the Chinese American experience — that of its artists and creators.
“We are excited and proud to present these three films as our celebrations,” states Vc Executive Director Francis Cullado. “Having Lena Khan’s "The Tiger Hunter" as our opening, Jonathan Lim’s "Pali Road" as our closing night, and Pamela Tom’s "Tyrus" as our centerpiece film certainly highlights the amount of Asian American directorial talent out there. The big word this year in Hollywood has been ‘diversity’ and the Festival is one of the ways we address this issue at Visual Communications and for our community. For us, it’s not just about diversity – it’s about inclusivity. We will be releasing more of the Festival line up in the next week and everyone will be able to celebrate inclusion and diversity on the screen, as it should be.”

Before she sang “Galavaaant” across the castles and fields of England, actress Karen David was filming in London for Atul Malhotra’s Brit Indie film Amar, Akbar & Tony. Amar, Akbar & Tony are three best friends who all are from different backgrounds. It is about the camaraderie and love between these three friends through trials, tribulations, predicaments they face and the happy times as they grow up and come of age.
In the comedy/drama, Karen plays the mysterious character of Meera, but that is all we know! What we do know is that according to director Atul, she has done an incredible job.
Stacey got the chance to catch up with Karen and had a fun, fabulous chat about the challenges playing Meera, what she thinks is so special about this Indie film and more! Enjoy!
I know when we last talked, you were telling me that filming was in the middle of your wedding?...

Sean Penn has sparked controversy by making a joke about Birdman director Alejandro González Iñárritu's Mexican heritage at the 2015 Academy Award ceremony.
The actor presented the award for Best Picture to Birdman, which is written, directed and produced by Iñárritu. However when announcing Birdman as the recipient of the award, Penn joked: "Who gave this son of a bitch his green card?"
However Variety reports that, when interviewed backstage, Iñárritu called the joke "hilarious" and was not offended by it.
The director, who worked with Penn on 2003's 21 Grams, said: "Sean and I had that kind of brutal relationship where only true friendship can survive.
"When I was directing him in 21 Grams, he was always making jokes … I made a lot of very tough jokes (to him) that I will not tell you.
"I didn't find it offensive, I thought it was very funny."
