An undocumented Filipino cleaner is employed at a vast, remote mansion to care for a bedridden David Hayman, while hiding her daughter Grace
There are interesting ideas – and a tremendous final choir sequence – in this scary movie; it offers a critique of British colonialism, and also plays with the text of Rudyard Kipling’s 1899 poem The White Man’s Burden that urged the United States to assume the thankless imperial task of civilising and subjugating the people of the Philippines, and nobly overlooking how ungrateful they are going to be. There is ingenuity here, and good acting, but the film for me feels flawed by its strained melodrama, an absence of scares and by a very odd scene of almost unreal, farcical absurdity.

Paris Zarchilla’s 2023 horror mystery, Raging Grace, is a nerve-wracking delight but in all the right ways. This soothing, slow-paced film skillfully delves into the hidden layers of horror, steering clear of the typical jump scares and worn-out ideas we’ve seen in countless other movies. In layman’s terms, Raging Grace is an absolute must-watch. The film chronicles the story of Joy (Max Eigenmann), an immigrant who had come to a foreign land to carve out a better living for herself and her daughter, Grace (Jaeden Paige Boadilla). Joy tries all sorts of odd jobs and commits to her duties with all her heart, yet people see her as an opportunist who would steal their belongings the moment they turned their heads away. In addition, Joy is also saving up every penny to get a citizenship certificate from Gary.

Talking about the same, the actor said, “Basically, we shot no scenes with a green screen. Everything was practically built, which was amazing. Every day, getting on the set in Leavesden, then shooting in London, where I’d never shot before it felt like entering this magical world that Paul King had realised and that David Hayman had stewarded — who famously stewarded ‘Harry Potter’, ‘Barbie’ and these other movies that have very distinct palettes, sets and feelings to three them.”
Timothee further mentioned, “So, this was one of these incredibly magical sets to walk on. Every set you walked on offered something new. Production designer Nathan Crowley, who’s worked on things like ‘Interstellar’, just did a fantastic job.”

"You should've just stopped at cleaning toilets." Brainstorm Media has revealed the first official trailer for Raging Grace, an indie horror thriller made by filmmaker Paris Zarcilla - making his feature directorial debut. The film premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year, where it won the Grand Jury Prize as well as the Thunderbird Rising Award. Arriving on VOD to watch this December. An undocumented Filipina immigrant and her daughter become ensnared by horrifying truth while working as a caretaker for a terminally ill old man. As they take care of this strange man, they unwittingly become entangled in a chilling secret. Starring Max Eigenmann, Jaeden Boadilla, Leanne Best, and David Hayman as Mr. Garrett. It also won awards at the Neufchâtel Fantasia Film Festival, including the Audience Award. While this story isn't particularly unique nowadays (also see Sundance winner Nanny), there is clearly something going on in this.

‘Raging Grace’ FrightFest Review – Gothic Horror Mines Suspense and Terror from Immigrant Experience
Writer/Director Paris Zarcilla’s feature debut, Raging Grace joins films like His House and No One Gets Out Alive in examining the horrors of immigration from within the walls of a haunted house. Instead of ghosts from the past or creatures, though, Zarcilla spins a taut tale of gothic horror combined with personal drama that sets it apart. The focus on its characters means a slower-coiling horror story, but one that surprises with unexpected detours.

“It’s a mad way to make a film, and I’m not sure it’s not something I would rush into again,” director Hope Dickson Leach said of the process behind her latest feature, the Edinburgh competition title The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
Leach, best known for her well-received debut, The Levelling, which debuted at Toronto in 2016, was approached by the National Theatre of Scotland during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic to create a hybrid film-theatre project that could engage audiences while health restrictions were still in place.
The result was a stage production of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, performed live at the Leith Theatre in Edinburgh by a troop of actors who were tracked around the venue by six cameras. The footage was mixed and edited live by Leach, who sat in an operating van outside the venue.

Appropriately the City of Edinburgh takes centre stage in this retelling of Robert Louis Stevenson’s novella. Relocating the story to the Scottish capital Hope Dickinson Leach (The Levelling) is given free rein to explore all its gothic glory, to spin a tale of human behaviour and the inhumanity of the upper classes.
Going back to the source, our story concerns Gabriel Utterson (Lorn MacDonald), a solicitor of extremely modest means. Quiet and well-mannered he has all the hallmarks of a Victorian gentleman except the status itself. A drawback which he hopes his friendship with Doctor Henry Jekyll (Henry Pettigrew) could one day remedy. However, Jekyll is prone to strange behaviour, changing his will in favour of his assistant Mr Hyde, a man curiously linked to violent assaults and deaths throughout the city. As Utterson edges closer to the truth of the two men he finds his place in the city elevated by the wealthy,...

First things first, Fear the Invisible Man is not a sequel to the 2020 version of The Invisible Man although I’m sure the film’s makers won’t mind if you think so. Instead, it’s an adaptation of H.G. Wells’ novel that, unlike most adaptations of his work, keeps the book’s Victorian setting.
Griffin is in a race against time to finish his experiments. The reason, his landlord and a bailiff are pounding on the door, ready to evict him. Injecting himself with it moments before they kick in the door, his flesh and bone vanish and he escapes, though not before causing an explosion that kills them and destroys his lab.
Elsewhere Adeline is disbelievingly reading about a series of crimes supposedly caused by an invisible man.

Fear the Invisible Man releases on Digital, VOD and DVD June 13, 2023, and you can watch the official trailer below. This one looks like a polished indie production, playing out closer to the original Universal Monsters classic than Leigh Whannell’s updated reimagining. Some of the digital effects work is a bit rough, but otherwise this one looks to be well worth our time.

Scottish thriller Guilt is back for the third and final chapter in the McCall Brothers trilogy. Neil Forsyth’s fiendishly plotted drama all began when Max and Jake – a ruthless lawyer who’d climbed his way out of his working class Leith upbringing to wealth and status, and his vinyl-loving record shop slacker sibling – were flung together when they tried to cover up an accidental hit-and-run. So began a complex and gripping story about money laundering, Edinburgh gangsters, betrayal, class, family and yes, guilt.
Series three finds Max and Jake forced back to Edinburgh where some old enemies await. They’re joined by Pi-turned legal advisor Kenny Burns, his police detective girlfriend Yvonne, criminal kingpin Maggie Lynch, dangerously unpredictable ex-con Teddy and more familiar faces from the first two series. Also appearing are a range of new characters, as follows:
Isaura Barbé-Brown as Yvonne Nixon

Not unlike the rage sparked within Bong Joon Ho’s now-classic Parasite, Paris Zarcilla’s Raging Grace explores a perverse relationship between a wealthy estate owner and their laborer. Rather than comment on class systems and populist rage, the writer-director frames this conversation in the context of immigration and colonization, which is on its face scarier than any slasher movie could ever be. Striking an often playful and darkly comic tone, the SXSW Jury Prize winner captivates as it delves deeper into psychological horror.
Max Eigenmann stars as Joy, an undocumented Filipina immigrant who bounces from house to house in London with daughter Grace (Jaeden Paige Boadilla), staying while families are out of town and under the radar of their neighbors. Grace, embodying the spirit of Macaulay Culkin’s Kevin in Home Alone, has a habit of playing pranks which will later come in handy.

Winner of SXSW’s narrative grand jury award, “Raging Grace” deserves ample credit both for what it is and what it is not. But it’s difficult to be much more detailed in any appraisal of this cunning thriller without prematurely releasing cats from bags. On the other hand, it is safe to say that Paris Zarcilla, the British-born Filipino writer-director here making his feature debut, does an impressive job of infusing scary movie conventions with the potent urgency of a sharply observed social critique.
Right from the start, Zarcilla generates a compelling rooting interest in his protagonist: Joy (Max Eigenmann), a single Filipina mom who’s trying to maintain a low profile while working at various housekeeping jobs — mostly for well-off folks who sound condescending even during the most innocuous conversational gambits — and saving to purchase a gray-market visa so she and Grace (Jaeden Paige Boadilla), her mischievous young daughter,...

There’s a powerful social commentary running through U.K. horror flick Raging Grace that’s not always served by the film itself, which is neither scary nor all that convincing when it rummages through the toolbox of familiar genre tropes.
And yet, this debut feature from British-born Filipino writer-director Paris Zarcilla gets its message across despite all the jump-scares and haunted house hysteria. That message is simple but effective: In a world where immigrants toil at the behest of a privileged ruling class, to the point where they’re sometimes more indentured servants than free individuals, the horrors of everyday life far outweigh anything that a movie could invent.
Much of Raging Grace explores that ongoing system of exploitation, following a single Filipino mom, Joy (Max Eigenmann), who cleans swanky London houses to make a living and pay for an overpriced visa that will allow her to stay in England.

Despite the various claims made by conspiracy theorists about occult ceremonies, flying saucers and other such unlikely interventions, the evidence that Adolf Hitler died in his bunker in 1945 is pretty solid. Compared with what historians usually have to go on, it’s remarkably clear. Evidence can be of limited use as a response to trauma, however, and given just how many people continued to live in fear of Hitler for decades after the war, it is perhaps not surprising that, each year, several sightings of him were reported, even after the point where he would almost certainly have succumbed to old age. They were particularly common in Argentina, where other prominent Nazis fled. This film, set in 1960, blends comedy and tragedy in addressing one such incident.
At the centre of it is Polsky (David Hayman), an elderly Jewish man who suffered horrific personal losses in the Holocaust and has responded.

Set in 1960, Leon Prudovky’s tale of a Polish Holocaust survivor who suspects his imposing new neighbour is the Führer himself veers towards silliness
Russian-born Israeli film-maker Leonid Prudovsky has confected an unsatisfying tonal oddity: a jokey-sentimental drama with weird slashes of actual historical pain. The year is 1960 and a lonely, cantankerous Polish Holocaust survivor called Polsky (played by David Hayman) is living all on his own in a village in Colombia. Unhappy Polsky has a psychosomatic prostate complaint which makes urinating difficult; he takes what happiness he can in chess and growing a special strain of black roses.
Polsky is astonished when a high-handed and unpleasantly secretive German expat moves in to the house next door, wearing what appears to be a false beard: a Herr Herzog, played by Udo Kier. This oddly familiar-looking figure has an alsatian which makes a nuisance of itself in Polsky’s garden; he...

The multi-platform entertainment distribution and production arm of Shout! Factory plans to release the film in theaters and across all major digital platforms early next year.
Directed and produced by award winners Erin Bernhardt and Din Blankenship, Refuge is set in the most diverse square mile in America — Clarkston, Georgia — and follows a Syrian Kurd, a former Klansman, and a town of refugees who seek belonging in a country that blames them for its problems. Swimming against the current of an increasingly polarized and isolated America, each must decide whether they will risk knowing and being known by those who oppose them. Ultimately, Refuge uncovers what is possible when we leave the security of our tribes, and what is at stake for our country if we don’t.

The first three episodes of LucasFilm‘s new Star Wars series, Andor, are now officially available! Disney+ released the installments together as a block, seemingly as a tactic to secure future viewers due to the show’s slow burn pacing. That said, the remainder of the first season will be making its way to the streaming service in weekly doses.

As Andor is a prequel to that prequel, we meet the character here at an earlier stage in his life when he is still just a shifty thief who will kill mercilessly to cover his tracks, and who doesn’t exactly have his eyes on the revolutionary prize quite yet. In true cinematic fashion, he has just enough life left in him to utter a single word, “Raven”, before dying. Poe convinces the others it’s their duty to bring his body to town for proper burial. Following the world premiere of “My Neighbor Adolf” on the Piazza Grande in Locarno, Beta Cinema has sold the dark comedy to Vendetta Films, which will bring the Udo Kier and David Hayman starrer to cinemas across Australia and New Zealand in the first quarter of next year.
Prior to Locarno, Beta Cinema sold the film to Hungary (Cinetel) and Switzerland (Praesens Film), while deals for North America (Cohen Media Group), U.K. and Ireland (Signature Entertainment), Italy (I Wonder), South Korea (Lumix Media) and Japan (Tohokushinsha Film) had been revealed before.
The film is set in Colombia in 1960, just a few days after the Nazi criminal Adolf Eichmann was caught by Mossad agents in Argentina. Polsky, played by Hayman, is a lonely and grumpy old man, living in the remote Colombian countryside. He is a survivor of the Holocaust. He spends his days playing chess and tending his beloved rosebushes.

Shudder has now announced that they’ll be releasing Raven’s Hollow on September 22nd – and along with that announcement comes the unveiling of a trailer for the film, which you can watch in the embed above.
Inspired by Poe’s mysterious exit from the Military Academy at West Point, Raven’s Hollow is set in the fall of 1830 and has the following synopsis:
West Point military Cadet Edgar Allan Poe and four other cadets on a training exercise in upstate New York come upon a man eviscerated on a bizarre wooden rack. His dying words direct them to a forgotten community, which they believe is guarding sinister secrets.
