There’s an elite tier of TV dramas that stay with you, vividly, for decades after they air, and seventies-set sci-fi crime drama Life on Mars was the perfect example. So fervent was the show’s fanbase, that even 15 years after it aired – introducing us to detective Sam Tyler (Grace’s John Simm), who has a car crash in 2006 and wakes up mysteriously trapped in 1973 – the news of a planned revival during a lockdown live tweet-along in 2020 was enthusiastically received.
This revival was later fittingly dubbed Lazarus – once again named after a David Bowie song, like Life on Mars and its sequel Ashes to Ashes – but we’ve now received the sad confirmation from the show’s creators that the reboot won’t be going ahead after all:
It is with a heavy heart that the creators of #LifeOnMars have confirmed that the highly anticipated revival show, #Lazarus, will no longer be moving forward.

Life on Mars was one of the UK’s most popular dramas when it aired a decade and a half ago, and its many fans were geared up for the highly anticipated revival show Lazarus.
However, the show’s creators Matthew Graham and Ashley Pharoah have announced this will no longer be happening. The team took to social media on Saturday to report to fans:

Epix has put four scripted projects into development including a pair of comedies with one starring A Fish Called Wanda star Kevin Kline.
Kline is to star in American Classic, which would mark the actor’s second TV project if it goes to series. He recently signed up to star alongside Cate Blanchett in Alfonso Cuarón’s Disclaimer for Apple.
In the half-hour American Classic, Kline plays Broadway star and notorious narcissist Richard Bean, who suffers a spectacular public meltdown and returns to his tiny hometown and the family-run theater where he first became aware of his own brilliance.
When he arrives, he is shocked to discover that his father, the former artistic director, has slipped into a puppet-filled dementia, and that the once-respected theater run by his brother, played by The Closer’s Jon Tenney, and his wife, who is now the town’s mayor, has become, by necessity,...

A year after Legendary brought in Chris Albrecht to launch Legendary Global, the former Starz CEO is taking over the company’s entire TV operation.
Legendary is consolidating its international (Legendary Global) and domestic TV businesses under Albrecht, who has been named Head of Legendary Television. Nick Pepper, who served as President of Legendary Television for the past three years, will transition to an executive producer role on projects he had developed.
The move had been in the works for the last couple of months, with Albrecht gradually expanding his responsibilities. It aims at better positioning the company to capitalize on the global expansion of the U.S. streamers and the heightened need for platform defining content. Accelerated by the coronavirus pandemic, the combining of the entities also increases operational efficiency and performance.
Joining the consolidated unit in a newly created role is CAA veteran Danny Grover as head of Business Affairs.

To celebrate the eagerly-anticipated release of The Spanish Princess Part 2, we sat down with its incredible cast and show-runners to find out about the new season and why the show has hit such a chord with audiences so far.
Released last year, the first season was a huge success and the plan was always to spread Catherine of Aragorn’s story over two time periods to fully immerse the audience in the story, as told to us by showrunners Emma Frost and Matthew Graham. But the themes of the show about women, race, politics, economics, and more pierce through time and are as relevant as they were back in the 15th century, echoed by the show’s cast.
We chatted to Charlotte Hope, Laura Carmichael, Georgie Henley, Ruiari O’Connor, Stephanie Levi-John and showrunners Emma Frost and Matthew Graham.
“The Spanish Princess Part II” continues the story of Queen Catherine and Henry VIII.

The entertainment industry has rarely been shy to put politics under the lens.
In recent years, shows like “Veep” and “House of Cards” provided side-splitting satire and dystopian shock and awe respectively, before the current administration threw a spanner in the works. Now, creators are having to adapt to the new political reality and executives are having to program accordingly. With series like “The Loudest Voice” and films like “Brexit” out this year, featuring heavy hitters in Russell Crowe, Naomi Watts and Benedict Cumberbatch, it would seem that the entertainment industry is increasingly looking to dissect current affairs and recent history, searching for answers.
However, satirizing politicians and reflecting the political system is all well and good, but what difference will it make if only like-minded viewers are watching? A concern for many behind some of this year’s biggest politically-bent content is that of preaching to the choir.

Over the past few years television has become an arena that is overflowing with period dramas and historical explorations. However, the difference in recent years is that many viewers are no longer as content to see, and showrunners are no longer as satisfied make, straight period dramas. To set themselves apart, today’s shows that play in the past are expected to offer some commentary on modern society, or to frame the past in a way that it hasn’t been seen on screen before.

Following in the vein of “The White Queen” and “The White Princess” before it, Starz limited series “The Spanish Princess” is inspired by Philippa Gregory’s novels. The story follows Catherine of Aragon, who arrives in England in the 1600s betrothed to Prince Arthur, then encounters his father, Henry VII. In adapting the story for the modern audience, let alone the modern medium of television, showrunners Emma Frost and Matthew Graham set their sights on being true to the cultural diversity recent research has revealed, while giving Catherine more “agency” than might have been allowed at the time.
Restoring the Royal Court
“History is the tale of the victors,” Frost says, and because of that, “history books are written by those in power, who were white men.” But, Graham adds, even a “cursory Google search” now proves there is a much richer history that has been whitewashed out of such books.

“The Spanish Princess,” which premiered May 5, rounds out the Starz miniseries triptych that began in 2013 with “The White Queen” and continued four years later with “The White Princess.” The latest seven episodes revolve around Spain’s Catherine of Aragon, played by Charlotte Hope, in line to receive the highly contested throne of England in the 16th century. The stories are adapted from Philippa Gregory’s “The Cousins’ War” series.
Emma Frost served as writer on “White Queen” and showrunner on “White Princess” and, with Matthew Graham, is showrunner again on “Spanish Princess.” Just as the action draws heavily on alliances among women, a similar dynamic reigned behind the scenes when making the miniseries.

Delving into Catherine of Aragon’s life from the time she leaves Spain to marry Arthur, Prince of Wales, and the tumultuous international fallout thereafter, the new Starz miniseries isn’t short on conflict, romance, or excuses for lavish period decor — it does look quite good. Yet beyond the would-be cliffhangers that end each of the four episodes, there’s simply not a lot going on in Emma Frost and Matthew Graham’s dud of a period drama. In other words, even with a shift of perspective to women and minority characters, there’s not a lot to learn from “The Spanish Princess,” and little to enjoy either.

With sumptuous costumes and a cast including a couple of familiar and beloved costume-drama players, Starz’s “The Spanish Princess,” about the travails of Catherine of Aragon, seems designed to appeal to lovers of broadly drawn historical romance. And yet it’s hard to imagine anyone outside the core constituency for royals and the games they play finding much of interest in “The Spanish Princess”: Baroque in its attention to detail, but telling its version of history strictly for the fandom.
Part of the problem — one that grows increasingly difficult to look past, even despite all the finery on display — is the character at the show’s center. Catherine, who arrives in England as a teenager in order to cement an alliance between the besieged kingdom and her native Spain, is a cipher throughout. Acorn TV launched in 30 new markets Tuesday, the biggest wave of international launches to date for the AMC-owned streaming service, which focuses on British and English-language drama.
The platform is now live in Australia and New Zealand, India, Spain, the Nordics, the Benelux countries and South Africa. The international rollout started in June, when Acorn TV launched in a plethora of markets in Latin America. More territories in that region were added as part of Tuesday’s wave.
AMC Networks has just closed a $65 million deal to buy Acorn TV parent company Rlj Entertainment, but the international rollout plans were being put into place ahead of that.
Rights deals mean that not every show from the service in the U.S. will be immediately available in every territory. Matthew Graham, Svp and Gm for Acorn TV, told Variety that the “strategy has been to start with a focused offering...

British reality format Love Island scored a peak audience of 3.4m viewers on ITV2 as the digital broadcaster cleaned up against its bigger rivals. The series, which follows a group of singletons including Danny Dyer’s daughter Dani Dyer who must couple up in a Majorcan villa, averaged 2.9m viewers across its 90-minute episode, more than double the 1.3m that tuned in to last year’s opener. Some 52% of its audience was aged between 16-34, a massive boon for the commercial broadcaster. The show helped the network beat major rivals including BBC One, which aired doc Suffragettes With Lucy Worsley in the timeslot, as well as The Queen’s Coronation In Colour on parent channel ITV, Versailles on BBC Two and C4’s 24 Hours in Police Custody. ITV bosses will hope that the increasing success of the format, a relative rarity in UK non-scripted formats, will help it sell the format into the U.

Charlotte Hope (Game of Thrones) has been tapped to star in Starz’s The Spanish Princess, the third installment following The White Princess and The White Queen, based on Philippa Gregory’s bestselling books. Starz also rounded out the cast as production begins on the limited series.
The Spanish Princess, from All3 Media’s New Pictures and Playground, the latest chapter in the dynastic saga of Tudor England, is described as a powerful, epic story that not only returns the audience to the world of royal court intrigue as seen uniquely through the perspective of the women, but also sheds light on a previously untold corner of history – the lives of people of color, living and working in 16th century London.
Hope has been cast in the titular role as Catherine of Aragon, alongside Stephanie Levi-John as her lady-in-waiting and confidante, Lina de Cardonnes.

Charlotte Hope will star in Starz’s “The Spanish Princess,” which is the cabler’s follow-up to “The White Queen” and “The White Princess,” Variety has learned.
Hope takes on the titular role, Catherine of Aragon, who is promised in marriage to the future King of England Prince Arthur (played by Angus Imrie). Catherine is described as “the source of curiosity, resentment and suspicion among her new family.” When Prince Arthur dies shortly after their wedding, Catherine finds her future as Queen in question and at the mercy of a divided Tudor court under the threat of enemies both abroad and closer to home.
Returning to the world of Tudor royal court intrigue, the story unfolds from the point of view of the women, which works to shed a light on a previously untold corner of history — including the lives of people of color that lived and worked in 16th century London.

Starz’s royal court is getting rather full: The premium cabler has greenlit The Spanish Princess, a limited series based on two Philippa Gregory novels, TVLine has learned.
Like The White Queen and The White Princess that preceded it, The Spanish Princess will take place in Tudor England and will follow the machinations of its monarchs. Unlike the previous series, however, the eight-episode Spanish Princess is based on material in two of Gregory’s best-selling books: The Constant Princess and The King’s Curse. We’re not sure exactly what’s going on in the strange and beautiful first trailer for Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams, but the sheer amount of star wattage in Amazon’s upcoming sci-fi anthology really makes us want to try and figure it out.

Each episode will be set in a different world — “some of which lay in the far reaches of the universe and time, and others which are much, much closer to home,” the...

When the ads for Electric Dreams started to appear on television, the similarities with Black Mirror caught my attention straight away. Then it was revealed that the show was Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams, and that made it a must watch. Now the first episode, The Hood Maker has launched, does the show live up to the hype?
In a world without advanced technology, telepaths are used as a means of long distance communication. With fear of the mutant’s ability to read minds though, the public start to turn on them, wearing telepath-blocking hoods to protect themselves. Two detectives, Agent Ross (Richard Madden) and telepath Honor (Holliday Grainger) are brought in to investigate the masks more.

Or more properly, a world inspired by Philip K. Dick. Episode one of this ten-part anthology series has taken liberties with Dick’s 1955 short story The Hood Maker, and quite rightly. That was written under the shadow of McCarthyism, when loyalty and betrayal were matters of state. This was written under the shadow of the Snooper’s Charter and corporate data mining. Last year we learned that Bryan Cranston would be teaming up with Battlestar Galactica's Ronald D. Moore to develop a sci-fi anthology series called Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams. That series has now officially been picked up for 10 episodes by Amazon.
Cranston is set to produce and star in the series that will feature adaptations of the short sci-fi stories written by Dick. There are hundreds of stories by the author, many of which have already been adapted, but there are a lot that still have yet to be explored on the screen. There are no details on what specific stories they are looking at adapting for the series, but I'm sure they'll be good ones.
Moore will be writing the scripts for the series alongside Michael Dinner of Justified, Travis Beacham (Pacific Rim), Tony Grisoni (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas), Jack Thorne (Harry Potter and the Cursed...

Exclusive: before George Lucas sold Lucasfilm, he hired Chris Chibnall & Terry Cafolla to work on his live-action Star Wars TV show
Around 2007, bolstered by the experience of running writers' rooms for animated series The Clone Wars, George Lucas assembled a team of writers to work up scripts for a live-action TV series. This is known.

And from the UK, Life On Mars' Matthew Graham. And in a new interview with this very site, Graham has revealed two more people who were involved. Including incoming Doctor Who showrunner, Mr Chris Chibnall.
Graham confirmed Chibnall's involvement, along with that of Terry Cafolla, in our interview going behind-the-scenes on the show's development and its...
