After taking a look back at House II: The Second Story (a favorite of mine since childhood) and House of 1000 Corpses (which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year), JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek continues his The Best Scene video series by digging into what he feels is the best scene from the 1995 classic Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight (watch it Here). Lance’s choice for the best scene in this one is the scene where Billy Zane’s character The Collector gives up his cowboy disguise and reveals his true nature. You can hear all about it in the video embedded above!
Directed by Ernest Dickerson from a screenplay written by Mark Bishop, Ethan Reiff, and Cyrus Voris, Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight has the following synopsis: Ex-soldier Frank Brayker is the guardian of an ancient key that can unlock tremendous evil; the sinister but charming...

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Brad Pitt Wants to Fuck a Cartoon in “Cool World”
If Robert Zemeckis’ “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” is one of the wonders of the cinematic world, then Ralph Bakshi’s “Cool World” is its under-trafficked, overly adult gift shop. The 1992 flop is worth walking through at least once — though I wouldn’t pick up anything from its metaphorical floor.
Embraced by lovers of animated baddies and so-wrong-it’s-right gems everywhere, this dark medium-blending fantasy film was intended to be Bakshi’s big comeback after a ten-year movie hiatus, arriving...

A Nightmare on Elm Street is a classic horror movie released in 1984, directed and written by Wes Craven. It follows the story of several teenagers living on Elm Street who are systematically targeted by an enigmatic killer with supernatural powers, Freddy Krueger. The teenagers discover that they can only survive if they stay awake, but even this proves futile as Freddy’s powers extend into the dream world.
The film spawned numerous sequels and spin-offs, making it one of the most successful franchises in horror movie history. It also became one of the most recognized and beloved icons in cinema history, with Freddy Krueger’s iconic striped sweater and fedora becoming staples in popular culture. A Nightmare on Elm Street has been credited with revitalizing the slasher genre, inspiring many other movies throughout the years.

This story about “Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers” director Akiva Schaffer first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Drama issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
“Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers,” the Disney animated series and cornerstone of the Disney Afternoon syndicated programming block, is probably not the kind of property you imagine the company resurrecting as a splashy live-action/animation hybrid. And it’s certainly not the type of movie that’s usually nominated in the Emmys’ Outstanding Television Movie category, which has always recognized nothing but totally live-action and usually serious films. And yet here we are, with the new Disney+ original not only succeeding as an audience favorite but as an esteemed accomplishment worthy of the nomination.
Director Akiva Schaffer, one-third of the influential comedy troupe The Lonely Island, is just as shocked by the acclaim, which came on a morning when he didn’t even know the nominations were being announced.

“Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers” are back.
Not the beloved syndicated television series, which ran for three seasons and 65 episodes from 1989 to 1990 as part of the Disney Afternoon weekday programming block, mind you, but the live-action/animated adventure directed by The Lonely Island’s Akiva Schaffer.
This new movie takes place in a world where Chip (John Mulaney) and Dale (Andy Samberg) were stars of that long-ago TV show and have now grown apart, improbably brought together to solve a mystery that personally impacts their cartoon world. It’s a wild, irreverent world that Schaffer and his collaborators have conjured.
TheWrap spoke to Schaffer about what the appeal of the movie was for him, how he managed to clear all of the characters that show up in the movie, whether or not the movie takes place in the same world as 1988’s “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” and whether or not...

With horror icon Robert Englund likely returning for the upcoming Nightmare on Elm Street reboot/sequel, we’re now being told by our sources – the same ones who said Bill Murray would return in Ghosbusters: Afterlife and that a Scream reboot was in the works, both of which we now know to be true – that other significant characters from the original film could be brought back as well. Just like how the upcoming Halloween sequels are bringing back actors from the first installment of their respective franchise, the series that put Freddy Krueger on the map could do the same thing.
Details are still scarce regarding the project as the Craven estate is still taking pitches for it, but it would certainly be nice to see some cast members reprise their roles from the first movie or even return as different characters. Lest we forget that Johnny Depp made his...

Patton Oswalt defines the protagonist in Syfy’s new comedic thriller “Happy!” by referencing a classic buddy picture. “Remember in ‘Midnight Run,’ when Charles Grodin is telling DeNiro, ‘the reason you have an ulcer is that you have two modes of expression: Silence and rage’? That’s Nick Sax,” Oswalt told co-star Christopher Meloni, who plays the lead character. “It’s either glowering silence and then just explosive and it’s hilarious.”
It’s not a bad way to sum up the relationship between Meloni’s and Oswalt’s chatacters in “Happy!”, which premieres this Wednesday. But here’s the big difference: Rather than playing somewhat sane humans, Meloni stars as incredibly unstable private investigator Nick Sax, and Oswalt is the voice of Happy, a CGI flying unicorn who is either a figment of Nick’s imagination or the manifestation of a little girl’s imaginary friend.
Either way, only Nick can see Happy,...

As she bursts into the spotlight with her breakout role in Girls Trip, it’s hard to picture Tiffany Haddish as anything but a born comedy star. But her road to success has been a harrowing one.
As her mom fought mental illness, Haddish was placed in foster care as a child. It wasn’t until a social worker pushed her to attend a comedy camp that she discovered her passion for performing.
Now, the actress, 37, is starring alongside Queen Latifah and Jada Pinkett Smith in the new comedy Girls Trip —playing the wildest member of a tight-knit crew of college girlfriends.

You hear Haddish say “she ready” a lot, in interviews, in her upcoming Showtime stand-up special — Haddish’s production company is even called She Ready Productions. When she says it, don’t think of it as a catchphrase. Really, it’s a mantra.
“Me and my cousins, we came up with it when we were young and trying to sneak into clubs,” she told IndieWire in a phone interview. “When we would come out of the house and you looked cute we’d be like, ‘Yeah, she ready.’ And if you looked bad, we’d be like, ‘Uh uh, she not ready, go back in the house.

Why David Fincher’s masterpiece about the Zodiac Killer still haunts us a decade on...
David Fincher’s Zodiac is now ten years old. The two-hour-and-38-minute film follows the years-long investigation by police and journalists of the Zodiac Killer, a serial murderer who cut short the lives of five people and injured two others during a spree that stretched across 1968 and 1969 in northern California. The Zodiac may have also been responsible for a number of other killings, going back as far as 1963 and as late as 1972, but those have never been confirmed. The Zodiac himself, who wrote a series of letters to the press, was never captured, and a long list of suspects that have surfaced over the years has yet to yield a conclusive answer to the question of his identity.

October 20th is yet another stellar week of horror and sci-fi home entertainment releases, all leading up to our favorite holiday: Halloween. One of my favorite films of all time, Ernest Dickerson’s Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, is finally making its way to HD via a Collector’s Edition Blu-ray from Scream Factory. For those of you Back to the Future fans out there (and really, who isn’t?), Universal is giving the series a few special releases in time for the film’s 30th anniversary and,...

Next Tuesday, Scream Factory will offer horror fans several new options for Halloween movie marathons when The Larry Fessenden Collection and the Tales From the Crypt films Demon Knight and Bordello of Blood come out on respective Blu-rays. Ahead of their impending release date, we have clips and trailers from all three Blu-rays to give you a look at what's to come.
Demon Knight (Collector's Edition Blu-ray): "A mysterious drifter known as Brayker (William Sadler, Iron Man 3) possesses the last of seven ancient keys that hold the power to stop the forces of darkness and protect all humanity from ultimate evil. But the human race is safe only so long as Brayker can evade the demonic Collector (Billy Zane, Titanic) who has gathered the other six keys.
In his obsessive quest for the key, the Collector rallies an army of ghastly cadavers against Brayker and the inhabitants of a run-down hotel.

Writer’s Note: This is the second part of my celebration of Ernest Dickerson’s Demon Knight, which turns 20 today. Truly one of my favorite horror movies to come out of the 1990’s (or really, any decade), Demon Knight was a landmark endeavor for many reasons. You can catch up with Part One of my retrospective here.

In Demon Knight, Brayker (William Sadler) and The Collector (Billy Zane) are vying for control over an ancient relic that controls the very fate of humanity. The duo eventually face-off at a remote long-term hotel in New Mexico called The Mission where several residents end up getting caught in the middle of their epic showdown. The hotel is run by the wise-cracking, no-nonsense Irene (Cch Pounder) who makes it her job to keep her renters in line, including former convict Jeryline (Jade Pinkett), a well-meaning prostitute named Cordelia (Brenda Bakke) and her client,...

After several successful seasons on HBO under its belt, Tales from the Crypt and its iconic host, The Cryptkeeper (voiced by John Kassir), made the leap to the big screen in January 1995 with the feature film Demon Knight. Directed by Ernest Dickerson and starring William Sadler, Billy Zane, Jada Pinkett, Dick Miller, Brenda Bakke, Thomas Hayden Church, Cch Pounder and Charles Fleischer, Demon Knight debuted at #3 its opening weekend and took in over $21 million during its theatrical run, making the first of the Tales from the Crypt a bona fide success (even if the critics didn’t seem to think so).

Murder mysteries are so commonplace on TV that each week offers seemingly dozens of them on police procedural series and detective shows. But in the movies, whodunits are surprisingly rare, and really good ones rarer still. There's really only a handful of movies that excel in offering the viewer the pleasure of solving the crime along with a charismatic sleuth, often with an all-star cast of suspects hamming it up as they try not to appear guilty.
One of the best was "Murder on the Orient Express," released 40 years ago this week, on November 24, 1974. Like many films adapted from Agatha Christie novels, this one featured an eccentric but meticulous investigator (in this case, Albert Finney as Belgian epicure Hercule Poirot), a glamorous and claustrophobic setting (here, the famous luxury train from Istanbul to Paris), and a tricky murder plot with an outrageous solution. The film won an Oscar for passenger...

One of my very favorite parts of this job is being able to pay tribute to movies that I grew up loving, the ones that taught me something about the genre and had a huge impact on me as a horror or cinema fan in general. One such movie is Ernest R. Dickerson’s Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight andm with its 20th anniversary approaching, I thought the horror comedy would make for a perfect selection for my next Deadly – Horror & Sci-Fi Magazine retrospective in the upcoming November issue.
During my research on Demon Knight over the last several months, I came across some really cool production stills and the official set of lobby cards that were released in 1995. Because they’re not something easily found online, I thought it would be fun to share with our readers as I geeked out over these and think other fans of...

Pee-Wee Herman was this close to voicing an iconic cartoon character. According to new footage obtained from an '80s special titled Disney Studio Showcase, producers originally wanted someone other than Charles Fleischer to voice Roger Rabbit. In fact, the first idea of Who Framed Roger Rabbit featured a young Paul Reubens (aka Pee-Wee Herman) voicing the "lovable" and "goofy" character. That's not the only shocking confession from creators. It turns out Jessica Rabbit's character was hardly in love with Roger Rabbit. "Jessica is a rabbit by marriage only," producer Marc Sturdivant explains in the clip. "She's actually an ambitious...

If you ever wondered what Roger Rabbit would sound like if he was voiced by Pee-wee Herman, we now have the answer, thanks to the recently unearthed episode of Disney Studio Showcase above showing Who Framed Roger Rabbit? in its strange, black-and-white infancy (via Slashfilm). "Roger Rabbit is a live-action picture in which half the cast is made up of animated characters," a Disney producer explains. "It's based on the premise that cartoon characters really live and are not drawn. They exist in this world just like human beings do.

Before Robert Zemeckis brought Charles Fleischer, Bob Hoskins, Christopher Lloyd and Kathleen Turner to the screen in 1988’s Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Disney crafted an early version of the Gary K. Wolf adaptation starring Paul Reubens as the voice of the eponymous rabbit. Rights to the hardboiled tale set in a city where humans and cartoon characters coexist were purchased shortly after the book Who Censored Roger Rabbit? was published in 1981. Disney saw dollar signs and set about hiring Darrell Van Citters for the job, casting the soon-to-be Pee-wee Herman as the lovable rabbit. Peter Renaday (The Aristocats) was cast as detective Eddie Valiant, and Russi Taylor (Disney’s current Minnie Mouse) became the dangerously curvaceous Jessica Rabbit. The early test...

Before audiences saw Who Framed Roger Rabbit? in 1988, Walt Disney Productions had tried to make the film several years earlier after initially getting the rights to Gary K. Wolf's novel on which the film is based. In fact, animation director Darrell Van Citters actually shot some test footage, but not with Bob Hoskins as Eddie Valiant and Charles Fleischer as the voice of Roger Rabbit. Instead, it was Pee-Wee Herman star Paul Reubens (though he wasn't known as that character yet) voicing the titular rabbit with Peter Renaday and Mike Gabriel as the human detective. Now that footage has surfaced. Watch below! Here's the early 1980s test footage from the first attempt to make Who Framed Roger Rabbit?: The footage above was shown on The Disney Channel in 1983 on a program called "Disney Studio Showcase" but it was never seen again. Thankfully, Thief Archive (via SlashFilm) has unearthed...

Scream Factory continues their winning streak of releasing horror film favorites with their double feature Blu-ray release of 1988’s Bad Dreams and 1982’s Visiting Hours. They originally released these films together on DVD in September 2011.
Bad Dreams opened on Friday, April 8, 1988 and is, in hindsight, eerily prescient of David Koresh, the leader of the Branch Davidian religious sect who met a horrific end when the FBI closed in on him and his compound ignited into a conflagration on April 19, 1993 in Waco, TX. Jim Jones and the Jonestown deaths in 1978 also come to mind. In this film, the late Richard Lynch plays a cult leader named Harris who convinces a group of people that love and unity are the only ways to live, and he shows that love by dousing them all in gasoline and lighting them on fire. Jennifer Rubin plays Cynthia, a confused and reluctant holdout...

It would take a certain kind of script to make a great Who Framed Roger Rabbit? sequel, but you can't say the audience isn't ready for one. With so much to say about the evolution of animation since Roger's 1988 big-screen debut, a follow-up could be this great bridge between what we used to be and what we are today. Plus, who wouldn't want to watch Roger bumble his way through some adventure, while Jessica Rabbit woos a new generation of horny preteen boys? Any Roger Rabbit sequel today might even involve motion capture, but back in 1988 we were still a few years away from that kind of technology. Though the character of Roger Rabbit was completely animated, he was voiced by a real dude: Charles Fleischer. The funny thing about Fleischer was that he insisted...

In case you weren’t convinced that Beyond Fest is just a wacky ball of fun, this past Friday Tales From The Crypt: Demon Knight was paired with Joe Begos’ Almost Human. The result was a throw-back trip.
I was going to let this screening slide by with nary a word on the topic until I realized that Tales From The Crypt can always use more of the spotlight. Based on the violent and sexed up EC Comics of the 1950′s, the comic-inspired anthology film from 1972 starred Peter Cushing, Joan Collins, and Ralph Richardson as the eponymous Cryptkeeper. A sequel, The Vault Of Horror, followed in 1973. The series truly took off in 1989, when Tales From The Crypt came to TV, and John Kassir took over the character of the pun-tastic Cryptkeeper, who could very well be considered the best horror host of all-time.

Of all the ’80s slasher films, a group crowded with all sorts of efforts, Wes Craven’s A Nightmare On Elm Street still reigns supreme as one of the more imaginative of the entire bunch. Nightmares have been fodder for many horror films over the decade, but here they’re particularly insidious and memorable. The film basically turned its producing studio, New Line Cinema, into a major player, gave a fresh breath of life into a genre that had grown stale, boosted the career of Craven, turned its scarred bogeyman Freddy Krueger into a pop culture icon (hat, red & green striped sweater, designer glove and all), made Robert Englund (as Krueger) a bona fide genre star, and provided a key early role for Johnny Depp. The impact A Nightmare On Elm Street has made in about 29 years is undeniable. The story, for those out there who have lived under a rock all this time,...

Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
Written by Jeffrey Price and Peter Semen
Directed by Robert Zemeckis
U.S.A., 1988
Visual effects have come a long way since the 1920s when pioneering directors the likes of Carl Theodor Dreyer and Jean Renoir, amongst many other notable filmmakers, attempted to marry real life actors and sets with added optical illusions, bridging the gap between the real and the artificial. Today, the meshing of effects work and live action has reached the stage where the actor becomes the effect through the popularized motion capture process. A strong proponent of the technique is director Robert Zemeckis, but before dabbling in it he started out pushing the boundaries of visual effects in one of the most impressive and visually unique projects of the 1980s, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, a film that has actors like Bob Hoskins and Christopher Lloyd constantly interact with two dimensional animated creatures.

Every now and then an anniversary comes along and it makes you pause and realize just how much time has passed and how much the world has changed. Twenty-five years ago, the idea of mixing animation and live-action was nothing new, but using computer-enhanced animation was a fresh approach. Then there was the mind-blowing idea of mashing up every animated icon from the golden age of animation. Yes, Disney and Looney Tunes side by side. The Fleischer Studios creations hobnobbing with the others. It had never been attempted before and was cause for celebration.
In the two and a half decades that have passed, Disney’s attempt to turn Gary K. Wolf’s protagonist into a cartoon perennial has petered out. Chicago – When “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” was released 25 years ago, it was a revolutionary critical and commercial smash on its way to four Oscars, including a special Academy Award created just for its amazing technical achievement (live-action and animation may be as common as McDonald’s commercials now but not in 1988). However, not every film from the late ’80s has held up well. In fact, most of them work more as nostalgia than anything else. (Case in point, the recent-to-Blu-ray “Willow”). Does “Roger Rabbit” still work? Does it ever. Watching the film on this long-overdue Blu-ray release, I was stunned by how great it still works in every way. It’s a classic.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
Why has Robert Zemeckis’ classic held up while others have not? I think the lack of ’80s-specific references really helps the piece feel timeless and the performances and fantastic script would work in any era. “Roger Rabbit” is just a fun,...

Late last year, Disney released CGI animation "Wreck-It Ralph," and thanks to its wide selection of cameos from videogame legends, barely a review passed without comparison to another Disney film from the past -- 1988's "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," which included dozens of brief appearances from classic cartoon characters. Sadly, for all of the charms of "Wreck-It Ralph," the comparison didn't do it many favors. On Blu-Ray this week, ahead of its 25th anniversary later in the year, Robert Zemeckis' 'Roger Rabbit' is a loving, beautifully crafted and inventive picture that's barely aged a day since its release. Long in development, and featuring the might of Disney, producer Steven Spielberg and director Zemeckis (at that time white-hot off the success of "Back To The Future") the family-friendly film noir is set in a 1940s L.A. where cartoons are real and have their own Hollywood suburb called Toontown. Who Framed Roger Rabbit? star Charles Fleischer has expressed interest in voicing the character again for a potential sequel.
The voice actor told ComingSoon that he would "more than like" to reprise the role, but insisted that talk of a follow-up is merely rumour.
"I would say that the update is that there are rumours. Because I'm not an executive at Disney studios - or at least I wasn't before this interview - the answer would fall outside my canon," he said when asked for an update on the rumoured sequel.
"If it were within my decision-making capacity, I would more than love to do more with Roger. I think there's a lot of people that would too, and that leads me to believe that it could happen. If something happens once, it might happen again."

"I'm not just another rabbit," Charles Fleischer jokes at the tail-end of our interview. It's true. Even though he's best known for voicing Roger Rabbit (as well as Benny the Cab and two of the weasels) in Robert Zemeckis' 1988 neo-noir masterpiece Who Framed Roger Rabbit , Fleischer's multihyphenate falls somewhere along the lines of actor-comic-scientist-inventor. While his most famous on-screen performance is now available for the first time on Blu-ray, curious fans can also check out his 2005 Ted talk in the player at the bottom of this page, view the patent for a toy egg that he invented and, if you really want to feel like you should have been paying more attention in school, read his recent scientific paper, "Can Sequentially Linked Gamma-Ray Bursts Nullify...

It all began in 1986 at the Comedy Store in La where director Robert Zemeckis saw Charles Fleischer perform his stand-up comedy act. The act consisted of a lot of voices and sound effects, but what most impressed Zemekis was what he called ”his vocal presence.” And so when auditions began for the human star of Zemeckis’ upcoming live action/animated hybrid murder mystery noir film Who Framed Roger Rabbit — the part eventually played by Bob Hoskins — they called Fleischer. Not to read for that part, but to read with the actors auditioning for that part. Fleischer eventually got the part providing the voice for Roger.
That was 25 years ago. Charles Fleischer went on to voice Roger in some Roger Rabbit shorts and has acted in movies such as Dick Tracy, Straight Talk and Zodiac and recently provided one of the voices in Rango.
