Whenever some sports superstar gets caught doing something untoward, the media wrings its hands and repeatedly shouts “What type of role model is this? Think of the children! Think of the children!” Invariably, the sports superstar in question points out he’s not a role model, he’s a ball player, or whatever. Usually he’s not very far north of childhood himself.
Yet, almost by definition sports superstars are super-heroes. They are imbued “with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men.” Michael Jordan, Bobby Hull, Muhammad Ali, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Willie Shoemaker, Chris Evert… these folks aren’t simply super-heroes, they’re magicians.
When I was at the optimum time to adopt a personal hero, I chose Ernie Banks. Shortstop and later first-baseman for my Chicago Cubs, he joined the team after a stint in the armed forces and the Negro Leagues. He spent 19 seasons with the Cubs,...

Serena Williams has done it again! The current world number one outplayed former world number one Caroline Wozniacki in the U.S. Open final Sunday, beating her pal 6-3, 6-3. The big victory secured Williams' 18th career grand slam singles title, tying with tennis legends Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova. Williams is now just four behind Steffi Graf, who holds the all time record with 22 career grand slam single titles in the open era. "Thank you everybody for the incredible support these weeks! It was a good run, unfortunately lost to a better player today!" Wozniacki said on Instagram. "Congrats @serenawilliams on #18, well deserved!" How did it feel to win the U.S....

Longoria stunned in the stands at Arthur Ashe stadium while watching the Grand Slam final. While Williams and Wozniacki traded serves, the Desperate Housewives alum looked glamorous in a sleeveless white dress and a matching white hat with a black band.
Longoria was joined in the stands by a slew of other celebrities, including actresses Debra Messing and Lizzy Caplan, Robert Redford, Star Jones, Christy Turlington, Spike Lee and more.
Williams ended up beating her off-court pal 6-3, 6-3 in a pair of sets that took just 75 minutes to complete. With the win, Williams has now claimed 18 Grand Slams, making her on par with veterans Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert.

Alan Davies has a new Dave show... but it doesn't have a title. As Yet Untitled - which begins tonight - sees the Qi star sitting down with a bunch of comedians for a bit of a natter - and the only 'format' is that they come up with a title for the episode at the end. Mainly, it's just funny, sometimes sad conversations with a bunch of interesting people... which seems novel. We caught up with Alan to find out more...

Lena Dunham is on today's "B.S. Report," where she talks about her obsession with the Old Loves Tumblr (join the club), a deep enduring love for Brad Renfro (join the club), and a few of her dream projects. She says she'd love to direct one of Espn's "30 for 30" docs, perhaps about women's tennis, since she's a fan. Bill Simmons pitched her Monica Seles's stabbing, or maybe the relationship between Chris Evert and Jimmy Connors, either of which could be great, though Seles seems more intriguing, because there's already an Evert-Navratilova installment. Dunham also says she dreams of guest-starring on other shows. "My life's great passion is the idea of being a guest star on Scandal," she says. "I want to be like, a senator who did something wrong." She admits that she's probably not "technically allowed to" be on another show, but surely there's a way to get around that.

Hollywood's biggest names seem to flock to the same vacation hot spots, making the Tinseltown community seem tiny. Just ask Gwen Stefani and Seal! On Monday, Dec. 30, the pregnant No Doubt singer and Heidi Klum's ex ran into each other on the slopes of Mammoth Mountain (a ski resort in eastern California). The bundled-up twosome shared a friendly hug and kiss on the cheek, both looking happy to see the other on their snowy play days with the kids. Gwen, 44, was with her and Gavin Rossdale's sons Kingston, 7, and Zuma (Gavin couldn't join in on the fun because he was performing at the Chris Evert Pro-Celebrity Tennis Classic in Boca Raton, Florida). Look, you can sigh in relief that Colton Cumbie‘s exit from the show last week spared us a season’s worth of his humiliating antics. Sure. But you also had to wonder if Colton was secretly the only exciting cast member, the only castaway willing to piss off acquaintances, start fights, and find the Zen in chaos. Well, get this: Since Colton left, everyone else on the show is suddenly meaner. Not kidding! It’s balanced out nicely. Almost poetically. It’s reality TV Zen, actually.

Maybe these too should stick to their day jobs. Actors Rainn Wilson and Jason Biggs headed to New York City this week for the annual U.S. Open. Instead of watching the fierce competition from the stands, the twosome decided to practice their tennis skills by competing in a special exhibition match of their own. Pitted against seasoned pros Chris Evert and Monica Seles, the funnyguys tried to keep up in their professional shirts, high socks and supershort shorts. But to nobody's surprise, it appears this game wasn't exactly too close to call. At least they looked good trying. Tennis fan Amanda Seyfried also ventured to the east to cheer on Andy Murray in his final match...

Queen of Tennis and equality advocate Billie Jean King will be the subject of the next film in PBS's "American Masters" series. The documentary, directed by James Erskine ("One Night in Turin," "The Battle of the Sexes"), profiles King's experience growing up as a girl on the tennis courts where she witnessed sexism and inequality. As she rose to tennis stardom, she made it her mission to play for equality for women in sports. The documentary will commemorate the 40th anniversary of the famous Billie Jean King/Bobby Riggs match, which became known as the Battle of the Sexes, and her founding of the Women's Tennis Association. King presents her own story, with perspectives from Rosie Casals, Chris Evert, Venus Williams, Gloria Steinem, Sir Elton John, Bobby Riggs’ son Larry, and others. The film will premiere September 10 on PBS, making the first time "American Masters" has profiled a sports figure.

Juliette reviews a documentary about one of tennis' most infamous matches of the 1970s...
‘The Battle of the Sexes’ is a title used for several exhibition tennis matches in which male players played female players. This entertaining documentary is focused on the most famous of them, the best-of-five-sets match played between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs in 1973.
There’s always a risk in any kind of sports film that it will only be of interest to fans of the sport, but that shouldn’t be the case here. It is assumed that viewers are familiar with the basic rules of tennis – the significance of King and Riggs’ match being played to five sets is not explained in detail – but the film does a good job of contextualising the match for viewers unfamiliar with the story, providing plenty of background on the struggle for...

Charice says her girlfriend Alyssa Quijano is "like her everything." They've known each other for years, having met when they competed against one another in a singing competition and re-meeting when Charice was judging The X-Factor and Alyssa was a contestant. I need some duets, stat.
Speaking of Charice coming out, apparently her Glee co-star Matthew Morrison was "stunned" to hear she was gay.
Can't get enough of Orphan Black? Check out this Screen Actors Guild conversation with Tatiana Maslany.
This fall, PBS will air American Masters: Billie Jean King. The documentary will premiere on Tuesday, September 10 and will feature commentary from King herself as well as Rosie Casals, Chris Evert, Venus Williams, Gloria Steinem, Sir Elton John, and Bobby Riggs' son Larry.
I'm super excited about the lesbian couple in Under the Dome.

Espn's documentary series "30 for 30," now in the midst of its second round of 30 films, has brought the world some great work from the likes of Steve James, Albert Maysles and Brett Morgen, but has also tended to skew very male both in terms of subjects and filmmakers. There have been a few exceptions -- Lisa Lax, Nancy Stern and Hannah Storm looked at the rivalry between Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova in "Unmatched," John Singleton focused on Marion Jones and Barbara Kopple helmed "The House of Steinbrenner" -- but now Espn Films and executive producers Robin Roberts and Jane Rosenthal are launching a slate of docs entirely focused on women in sports and directed by female filmmakers. The series is called "Nine for IX," and will air July 2 through August 27 on Espn, Tuesdays at 8pm Et. The roster includes plenty of familiar names, among them "Middle of Nowhere" director Ava DuVernay and Heidi Ewing and.

Chris Evert is much happier as a sportscaster than she used to be.
The winner of singles titles in three Wimbledons, six U.S. Opens, seven French Opens and two Australian Opens is nearing the third year of her Espn deal as a Grand Slam tennis commentator. Shortly after retiring from the game, she joined NBC Sports in a similar role, but she admits it took more distance from her days of competing to get comfortable with her TV job.
"I may not be the sharpest tool in the box," Evert muses to Zap2it, "but I know what I see in a match. And I know I'm instinctively pretty spot-on when it comes to strategy and what's actually happening on the court, what the players are trying to achieve and what their styles are. That's my contribution, trying to share something maybe before it happens, or telling viewers something they can't see.

Here’s one way to celebrate the Chinese New Year for 2013. Plan to watch a CSI and CSI: NY two-part crossover set to premier this coming February.
Can your television handle Gary Sinise and Ted Danson together?
This is how it will all go down. CSI starts things off the right way, initiating the storyline during the first hour. The all new episode will feature a visit from CSI: NY‘s lead detective, Mac Taylor, as acted by Gary Sinise, when he travels to Las Vegas to surprise his girlfriend Christine, acted by Megan Dodds. Romance kicks of the crossover, but a possible homicide fuels it from there. Christine winds up missing! Surely Ted Danson’s D.B. Russell can assist with the search.

We women hide our strength and competitiveness too often. Let's have less simpering and more Sigourney
Who would ever have thought it? Out and proud lesbian Ellen DeGeneres and Michelle Obama – who, despite her own achievements is still seen as the woman behind the president – have had a rather fetching press-up competition on national TV.
With a little flirting, and slightly more competitiveness we hear Ellen asking Michelle how many repetitions of the exercise she could do, before challenging the first lady with the line: "I was just wondering if you could do more push-ups than I could do".
Jackets were flung off while Michelle made a snide joke about Ellen having a dodgy back, and the next thing we saw the two women on the floor doing a smart imitation of gym bunnies. (If you are interested in who won, Michelle managed more press-ups than Ellen.)

No one tuning in to the U.S. Open men's and women's semifinals and finals this weekend is going to want to hear this, but I have bad news: the vaunted American "tennis boom" of the 1970s and '80s was a fluke. We were supposed to see tennis broken out of its country-club, upper-crusty enclaves and delivered to the masses. And for a while, it worked. The result, in fact, is the massive National Tennis Center complex, which annually hosts the U.S. Open. America took to tennis for a while. Public courts sprang up everywhere, young kids got racquets and took lessons, and a generation of marketable American stars -- Chris Evert, Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, even a naturalized Martina Navratilova -- emerged. It inspired a mega-generation, which included Pete Sampras, Jim Courier, Andre Agassi, and the Williams sisters. But then the...
