The Republican field is shrinking, as Sen. Tim Scott (R-sc) said Sunday evening that he is suspending his presidential campaign.
Scott said on Fox News’ Sunday Night in America with Trey Gowdy that voters “who are the most remarkable people on the planet…they’re telling me, not now, Tim.”
Gowdy seemed surprised by Scott’s announcement, and said, “You have plenty of money. You have the highest approval numbers of any candidate that is running, and you are couple of states away from coming to a state where you are beloved, and you are suspending your presidential campaign?”
“I think the message is clear for me right now,” Scott said.
Scott was among five candidates who qualified for the Republican debate last week, but he has failed to have a breakout moment at any of the three events so far this cycle. Frontrunner Donald Trump has been skipping the debates,...

Fully one-third of U.S. states have election deniers in some of the highest positions overseeing elections. That’s according to a new report from States United Democracy Center highlighted by Mother Jones.
Although many election deniers lost their races in the 2022 midterms, States United, a non-partisan organization, found that a total of 23 election deniers now hold statewide office positions that give them influential oversight over elections in 17 different states. This includes seven governors, five secretaries of state, and 11 attorneys general.
In the state of Alabama, election deniers hold all three of those powerful positions.

The 2024 presidential race already has its first candidate to drop out: Miami Mayor Francis Suarez.
The GOP contender announced on Tuesday that he was suspending his campaign, which failed to gain traction amid a large field of alternatives to front runner Donald Trump. Suarez failed to qualify for the first presidential debate last week, something that also may prove to be a reckoning for other candidates absent from the stage.
“While I have decided to suspend my campaign for President, my commitment to making this a better nation for every American remains,” Suarez said in a statement posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“I will continue to amplify the voices of the Hispanic community – the fastest-growing voting group in our country. The Left has taken Hispanics for granted for far too long, and it is no surprise that so many are finding a home in America’s conservative movement.

Donald Trump says that he won’t participate in the first Republican debate, but seven of his rivals will be on the debate stage.
The Republican National Committee confirmed the list of those who qualified for the Wednesday event, to be telecast on Fox News and moderated by Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum.
Those who will be in the debate include Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, former Un ambassador Nikki Haley, former pharmaceutical executive Vivek Ramaswamy, Sen. Tim Scott (R-Sc), former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum.
To qualify, candidates must have a minimum of 40,000 donors and to have reached at least 1% in three national polls or a combination of two national and two early-state polls. Candidates also need to sign a pledge vowing to support the eventual nominee. Trump met the donor and polling criteria,...

Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley will participate in a live CNN presidential town hall next month in Iowa, the network said Wednesday. The announcement comes just weeks after the network held a town hall with GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump, moderated by Kaitlan Collins, in New Hampshire.
CNN anchor and chief Washington correspondent Jake Tapper will moderate the Haley event, which will air at 8 p.m. Et on June 4.
The former South Carolina governor is one of many Republicans in a growing field of candidates who are vying for the party’s presidential nomination and who are heavily focused on Iowa – a state early in the primary election calendar that can make or break a campaign’s momentum.
Haley, who served almost two years as US ambassador to the United Nations during the Trump administration, has had to navigate running against her former boss and the current GOP front-runner.

Randy Pullen was in dire need of a lawyer. A former chairman of the state’s Republican Party, Pullen was helping run the sham election “audit” underway in Arizona’s largest county. The state Democratic Party had just filed a lawsuit to block the self-styled audit, and so Pullen contacted Reince Priebus, the former Republican National Committee chairman who was Trump’s first White House chief of staff. If anyone knew the best lawyer to hire, surely it was Priebus.

On Wednesday’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” Jimmy Kimmel kicked off his monologue by talking about the attempted recall of California Gov. Gavin Newsom, which by now of course everyone knows failed spectacularly.
But Kimmel wasn’t that concerned about the leading opposition candidate, Larry Elder, who couldn’t even manage to muster up 20% of the total vote. Instead, Kimmel was deeply amused by how poorly vanity candidate Caitlyn Jenner did in the election. (Hilariously bad by the way.)
Kimmel has had an interest in Jenner’s entrance in the recall election before of course. For instance he noted previously how she seemed to be spending more time playing golf than campaigning. Kimmel also called Jenner out for her cruel stance on homelessness. But on Wednesday’s episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” Kimmel just laughed about the results.
But before he got there, he broke down the situation for his audience.

Analysis: Larry Elder is on his way to nearly matching Arnold Schwarzenegger’s share of the vote in the last California recall election, but that’s just about where comparisons to 2003 end.
In fact, in a post-mortem on Wednesday, some Republicans are even blaming Elder for the shellacking that the pro-recall side took, handing Governor Gavin Newsom ample material to work with given Elder’s long history in the world of Am radio bombast.
Ron Nehring, the former chairman of the California Republican Party, said at a Sacramento Press Club event that Elder was “a life preserver thrown to Gavin Newsom.” Just as ballots were being mailed to all of the state’s registered voters, Newsom’s side was seizing on Elder’s past statements, from opposition to a minimum wage to comments about women.

President Joe Biden sees Governor Gavin Newsom’s resounding win in California’s recall as an affirmation of robust Covid-19 protocols, including vaccine requirements and school safety measures.
The White House released a statement from Biden on Wednesday in which he said that the vote was “a resounding win for the approach that he and I share to beating the pandemic: strong vaccine requirements, strong steps to reopen schools safely, and strong plans to distribute real medicines—not fake treatments—to help those who get sick. The fact that voters in both traditionally Democratic and traditionally Republican parts of the state rejected the recall shows that Americans are unifying behind taking these steps to get the pandemic behind us.”
According to the latest vote count, the “No’ on the recall led with 63.9% of the vote and the “Yes” side had 36.1%, with about 70% of the vote in. Major networks began calling...

Refresh for updates … Gavin Newsom is staying put as California governor after the state’s voters declined to oust him in the recall election today. The issue has been front of mind for Californians — and Hollywood — for months, especially the past few weeks, and social media was flooded with reaction to the results tonight. Have a look at a sampling of them below.
Major news outlets began projecting the result about 40 minutes after polls closed 8 p.m. Pt, after Los Angeles County’s mail-in ballots came in pro-Newsom in a big way. The governor beat back the recall attempt and conservative talk show host Larry Elder, who was the leading candidate to replace him.

However, even as Larry Elder told his booing supporters to be “gracious in defeat tonight,” Newsom’s chief GOP rival didn’t sound like he was graciously leaving the political stage. “By the way, we may have lost the battle, but we are going to win the war,” the conservative radio host added to cheers in a concession speech that was more like the start of another campaign.

3rd Update, 8:39 Pm Pt: California Governor Gavin Newsom was projected to defeat an effort to recall him from office, beating back an effort by Republicans to score a victory in the deeply blue state. CNN and NBC News called the race about 40 minutes after polls closed, with indications of a lopsided and blowout victory for the “no on recall” side. The networks had held off on projecting the race until they could discern the trendlines of election day vote. Just a month ago, polls showed the race close among likely voters. But the race seemed to change as Newsom was able to sound the alarm that he could be ousted from office and replaced by Larry Elder, a supporter of Donald Trump. The latest results show the No on Recall garnering 2/3 of the vote. If the margin holds, that would be even larger than Newsom’s lead in the 2018 election.

As California’s gubernatorial recall election inches closer to an end, the hosts of “The View” are lamenting that yet another election is facing voter fraud claims. In fact, Republican guest host Mary Katharine Ham is worried about the long-term fallout.
On Monday, Larry Elder, the GOP hopeful striving to unseat Gov. Gavin Newsom, refused to commit to accepting the results of the election when asked by MSNBC’s Jacob Soboroff. Soboroff stated the question explicitly and repeatedly, saying “Whether or not you win or lose, will you accept the results of the election?”
“I think we all ought to be looking at election integrity. No matter whether you’re a Democrat, independent or a Republican,” Elder replied, also repeatedly. “Let’s all make sure that the election is a fair election. So let’s all work together, no matter what the results are, to make sure that the results are valid and legitimate.

“What’s happening in Texas, what’s happening in Georgia, what’s happening around our country with these policies that are about attacking women’s rights, reproductive rights, voting rights, worker’s rights,” she said at a rally in San Leandro, CA. “They think if they can win in California they can do this anywhere. Well, we will show them you are not going to get this done. Not here, ever.”

If Gov. Gavin Newsom is recalled next week, the entertainment industry will lose a valuable ally in Sacramento.
The industry’s top concern at the Capitol is the film and TV tax credit, which provides a 20-25% discount on eligible production spending in the state. In July, Newsom signed a two-year expansion of the program, bringing it to $420 million a year, and indicated he would support making that increase permanent.
With the exception of former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, the leading Republican candidates to replace Newsom all oppose the film incentive.
Radio host Larry Elder, who has led in the replacement polls since entering the race in July, has long been against giving tax credits to Hollywood. He sees the program as “hypocritical,” given Democrats’ support for higher corporate tax rates on other industries.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom held a press conference Tueday to tout a milestone: 80% of the state’s eligible residents have received at least one dose of a Covid vaccine. He called it “a momentous occasion.” The governor sought to contrast the accomplishment with the pandemic plans of his recall rivals.
“I want to remind people that we have a choice in the state of California,” he said, “whether to walk down the path where we’re ideological and political about our approach to keeping healthcare safe, or continuing down the path that we’re on here in the state of California that is proving itself.”
He observed that that the state has a 4.6% test positivity rate. “That’s the seventh lowest in the nation,” said Newsom, before continuing, “We are not being ideological in any way, shape or form. Florida today is at 18.7%. Texas at 16%. We have a case rate...

Talk show host Larry Elder, considered one of the leading candidates to potentially unseat Gov. Gavin Newsom in the upcoming recall election, will not be prosecuted for alleged domestic abuse and gun violations.
Los Angeles prosecutors declined today to pursue his former fiancée’s allegations that he brandished a gun and engaged in domestic abuse six years ago.
There is a one-year statute of limitations on misdemeanor cases, so prosecutors could not pursue the accusations made by Alexandra Datig, who split with Elder in 2015.
Datig claimed in media interviews that Elder brandished a .45-caliber revolver during a 2015 argument about breaking up. She also claimed Elder pushed her in 2014.
“From the beginning, Larry has said that he will stay focused on the issues that animated over 1.7 million Californians to petition for a recall of Gavin Newsom,” Elder’s campaign said in a statement.
The recall election will take place on Sept.

On the latest “Real Time,” Bill Maher spent several minutes talking about the upcoming California recall vote to remove Gov. Gavin Newsom from office, and during the discussion made a convincing case for why people need to vote against it.
First though, he kicked the discussion off with the usual mid show gag, this time where he showed viewers a (fake) list of various weird people trying to become governor of California in the recall who were only slightly weirder than some of the real-life candidates. Which was of course the joke; Maher wanted to make it clear just how stupid and awful this situation is). You can watch that at the top of the page right now.
After the mid-show gag, Maher got into the ins and outs of the recall itself. Now, a lot of the context was left unsaid during the chat, so to catch those of...

Gavin Newsom kicked off a weekend statewide tour to campaign against California’s Sept. 14 recall, telling reporters that he will get some reinforcements: Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.
“We are comparing schedules right now, but we anticipate the President and Vice President will be here in a matter of weeks,” Newsom said at an event in San Francisco. Biden issued a statement on Thursday backing Newsom’s efforts to stay in office, giving Newsom what his campaign will be a needed push to boost turnout, as recall proponents have so far enjoyed an advantage in awareness and enthusiasm for ousting Newsom from office. As Newsom has done in the past, he characterized the recall as a Donald Trump-aligned effort to remove him from office, and accused Newsmax, One America News Network, Fox News and Right Side Broadcasting Network of “ginning up support” for it over the past year. Jane Fonda explored running for California’s governor in this year’s recall election, according to a report in the San Francisco Chronicle, but ultimately decided to support Gavin Newsom, who is trying to retain his seat in the September 14 election.
Fonda has spent much of her life active in politics and causes, but more recently has gained attention for leading Fire Drill Fridays, a series of protest actions to call attention to the need for dramatic action to combat climate change. She was arrested multiple times during protests in Washington, D.C. in 2019, including one night that she spent in jail. The protests continued in Los Angeles and in other cities and in online presentations.

A Sacramento judge ordered that radio host Larry Elder’s name be placed on the Sept. 14 gubernatorial recall ballot, rejecting Secretary of State Shirley Weber’s claim that he filed incomplete information about his taxes.
“California judge rules that the election law Elder allegedly violated Did Not Even Apply to a recall election And even if it did, Elder “Substantially Complied.” I will be on the ballot,” Elder wrote on Twitter shortly after the ruling.
Superior Court Judge Laurie Earl ruled that the requirement that candidates provide tax returns applied to direct primary elections, not a recall. “I don’t find that Mr. Elder was required to file tax returns at all,” Earl said at a hearing.
Elder announced last week that he was entering the race, but his name was not among Weber’s initial list of 41 candidates to qualify for the ballot. She is expected to release a final list later on Wednesday.

Cardi B. and Megan Thee Stallion’s “Wap” performance on Sunday night drew 80 complaints to the Federal Communication Commission, but that’s nothing compared to last year’s Super Bowl halftime performance by Shakira and Jennifer Lopez.
According to Wfaa in Dallas, which received the complaints through an open records request with the FCC, while the lyrics were censored, it was the on-stage antics of the superstar rappers that drew the ire of some viewers.
A viewer in Idaho wrote, “The outfits they were wearing and the movements they did were absolutely disgusting.” Another in Colorado said the women performed “as if they were dancing in a strip club.”
Someone in Texas compared the performance to another topic in the news, writing, “The media has a problem with Dr. Seuss, yet allows Cardi B to sing about her [Wap] on national television.”

Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s were burning up the FCC’s phone lines during Sunday’s Grammys, as the regulatory body received multiple consumer complaints regarding the two’s performance of their hit song “Wap.”
“We can confirm that the FCC did receive consumer complaints regarding the Grammys performance,” an FCC spokesperson told TheWrap. While the spokesperson did not say how many complaints the commission received, it was described as “an average amount for this type of event.”
TheWrap followed up by asking if it was more than last year or other recent Grammys performances, but have yet to hear back.
The FCC, or Federal Communications Commission, is tasked with making sure the broadcast airwaves are free of “obscene” programming. The FCC defines this as “material that, in context, depicts or describes sexual or excretory organs or activities in terms patently offensive as measured by contemporary community standards for the broadcast medium.

Conservative radio host Larry Elder compared Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi Bi’s Grammys performance of “Wap” on Sunday night to a trip to the strip club.
When asked Monday on Fox News’ noon show “Outnumbered” what he thought of Sunday’s Grammys, the pundit first distanced himself from awards shows, insisting he only watches because his girlfriend is a “recovering actress.”
“I promised myself when I was younger, I wouldn’t do the same thing my parents did regarding my music,” he said, calling his parent’s “old school” before doubling back on his youthful promise.
“I thought I had entered into a strip club. It was absolutely … Whatever happened to being able to sing, play an instrument, dance? What happened to those skills?” he demanded.
“They can do all of that,” pointed out host Harris Faulkner. “They’re also doing everything else.”

The National Center on Sexual Exploitation has blasted Sunday’s CBS Grammy Awards broadcast, saying it “contributed to the sexual exploitation of women by glamorizing prostitution and stripping.”
The Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit, formerly known as Morality in Media, called Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s performance of their song “Wap” one that “could have been cut from a hardcore pornography film.”
“CBS allowed a glamorization of stripping and prostitution to be broadcast in front of a national audience — a portion of which were children — for no other reason than for TV ratings,” Dawn Hawkins, the group’s SVP and executive director, said in a statement. “Despite the ‘popularity’ of the song performed by Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion, CBS should have never allowed this kind of explicit performance to happen at the Grammys.”

Donald Trump’s speech from the balcony of the White House was billed as an official event of his presidency, but it had all the makings of a campaign rally, with hundreds gathered on the South Lawn and many wearing red Make America Great Again hats.
The event represented his first in-person speech since being diagnosed with Covid-19, and even though questions remain as to the extent of his recovery, Trump is moving forward with a schedule of rallies next week.
“I’m feeling great, how about you?” Trump said, before launching into an address that targeted Kamala Harris as a figure of the far left and Joe Biden as beholden to a radical agenda. “The other day in the debate Biden couldn’t even use the words law enforcement,” Trump said.
Many more participants were wearing masks that did during previous White House events, but they were not so much socially distanced.

Donald Trump’s reelection campaign is requesting that the first presidential debate between the president and Joe Biden be held in early September, while it has provided organizers with a list of recommended moderators.
The list, below, is heavy in Fox News personalities, yet does not include Chris Wallace. He moderated a debate in the 2016 cycle, but recently interviewed Trump for Fox News Sunday in a widely praised hour-long exchange in which he, at multiple points, fact-checked the president’s assertions.
Trump’s campaign argues that the first debate, now scheduled for Sept. 29, will take place after early voting has begun in 16 states. Two other presidential debates are scheduled for Oct. 15 and Oct. 22. The Trump campaign also continued its call for debate planners to a fourth debate to the schedule in early September, but said that if that does not happen, the Oct. 22 event should be moved to that date.

Conservatives took to social media to blast NBC for a perceived double standard in cutting ties with Donald Trump Monday for his comments about Mexican immigrants while keeping Al Sharpton despite the pastor-turned-msnbc host’s numerous controversial remarks over the years. Fox News mainstays like Greta van Susteren and Brit Hume joined Right-leaning radio hosts such as Neal Boortz, Larry Elder and Jason Mattera in questioning the network’s dumping of Trump while keeping Sharpton in place. Sharpton, they argue, is just as guilty for making “demeaning” comments about race, religion and homosexuality. Despite his well-documented controversial statements, Sharpton maintains his MSNBC hosting.
