Lemmy Kilmister will always be a part of James Hetfield’s DNA — literally! The Metallica frontman has just gotten a new tattoo using ink mixed with the late Motörhead icon’s cremated ashes.
The tattoo of an iron cross with a spade on top appears on Hetfield’s right middle finger. The Metallica singer-guitarist posted a photo of himself flipping the bird on the band’s Instagram page (see below), writing, “With the steady hand of friend and tattoo artist @coreymillertattoo, this tattoo. A salute to my friend and inspiration Mr. Lemmy Kilmister. Without him, there would be No Metallica.”

He continued, “Black ink mixed with a pinch of his cremation ashes that were so graciously given to me. So now, he is still able to fly the bird at the world.”
The iron cross and the spade are iconography closely associated with Lemmy and Motörhead.

Staying hydrated is an important part of performing live, and for Metallica frontman James Hetfield that can be difficult as he sings and plays guitar at the same time. His proposal: a microphone with a built-in straw.
In a recent episode of the band’s official weekly podcast, The Metallica Report, hosted by Steffan Chirazi and Renée Richardson, Hetfield was asked if any innovations can be made to Metallica’s stage show as the band continues its “M72 World Tour” in 2024.
“The way our stage is — and me being a guitar player and singer — I’m not holding the mic,” remarked Hetfield. “I’m not able to go anywhere. So there’s mic stations everywhere. And for our monitor guy to chase me around to all the mics, he can’t have them all open, ’cause it sounds insane, especially in an indoor stadium … It would be nice to have...

Killing Joke guitarist Kevin “Geordie” Walker’s influence is vast: Metallica attempted to emulate his guitar snarl on their cover of “The Wait”; Kurt Cobain admittedly ripped off his riff to “Eighties” for “Come As You Are”; LCD Soundsystem synthesized his riff on “Change” and turned it into “Losing My Edge.” Other artists who praised Walker’s playing and Killing Joke include Jimmy Page, Trent Reznor, My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields, and all of Faith No More. Yet Walker himself never became a household name before his death on...

Metallica’s Kirk Hammett is bringing his beloved “Greeny” guitar to the masses. The metal legend has unveiled the Epiphone Inspired by Gibson Kirk Hammett “Greeny” 1959 Les Paul Standard.
Unlike the limited-edition Gibson Custom Shop version of the “Greeny” that Hammett introduced earlier this year at the steep cost of $19,999, the Epiphone edition is more reasonably priced at $1,499.
“I think Greeny is a guitar of the people and this is an amazing opportunity for more players to experience the spirit of Greeny,” said Hammett of the Epiphone edition’s lower price tag.
The guitar is based on Hammett’s own prized 1959 “Greeny,” which was previously owned by original Fleetwood Mac guitarist Peter Green, and later by Thin Lizzy axeman Gary Moore.
According to a press release, “The Epiphone Inspired by Gibson Kirk Hammett ‘Greeny’ 1959 Les Paul Standard represents a new era of premium features for Epiphone, from being the first...

Guitarist Kirk Hammett has had a few rough moments on Metallica’s “M72 World Tour,” the most recent being a nasty tumble he took onstage during the band’s show in Detroit on Sunday (November 12th).
Video footage shows the guitar legend tripping and falling hard onto the stage right as the band finished playing “Moth Into Flame.” After laying on the ground for a few seconds, Hammett gets up and angrily tosses his purple Esp guitar across the stage toward his guitar tech. He then yells out a couple of profanities while walking off the stage.
He was able to quickly recover mentally and physically, returning to the stage to play the next song, “Fight Fire with Fire,” and finish out the rest of the set.
Prior shows, including the band’s set at the historic Power Trip festival in Indio, California, saw Hammett flubbing the intro to “Nothing Else Matters.

Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett and Epiphone have joined forces for the 1979 Flying V signature model guitar.
Described as a “painstaking recreation” of Hammett’s prized original ’79 Flying V, the new replica pays homage to one of the most recognizable guitar silhouettes of all-time. Of course, Hammett and his bandmate James Hetfield — along with countless other thrashers — played a large part in elevating the V-shaped guitar to its iconic status, making the instrument synonymous with heavy metal in the process.
“I am extremely honored to be able to put out an Epiphone Flying V today,” remarked Hammett in a press release. “Epiphone represents great sounding guitars at accessible prices, which is fundamentally important for up-and-coming musicians. I’m beyond pleased that I can offer the ’79 Flying V in this capacity. It means so much to me to be able to put good guitars in the hands of young players.”

Tens of thousands of music fans braved the desert heat for three days at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California to witness six of the biggest hard rock and metal bands of all time perform at the inaugural Power Trip festival. On Sunday (October 8th), Metallica and Tool had the honor of closing out the festivities.
As previously reported, Guns N’ Roses and Iron Maiden kicked off the festival on Friday (October 6th), while AC/DC (playing their first show in seven years) and Judas Priest rocked the middle day on Saturday (October 7th).
Tool took the stage first on Sunday at Empire Polo Club, having previously played the first-ever Coachella festival there in 1999 and Coachella again in 2006.
Kicking things off with “Jambi” from 10,000 Days, Tool performed a career-spanning 12-song set that included songs from their debut full-length album, Undertow, through their latest effort, 2019’s Fear Inoculum. Of all their albums,...

Metallica is, without question, one of the biggest music acts in history. They've sold more than 120 million albums worldwide and have played on every single continent -- yes, even Antarctica. Not bad for a thrash metal band that seemingly had very little commercial upside and originally tried to call their first album "Metal Up Your Ass." In 2013, after more than 30 years of conquering the music industry, Metallica set its sights on conquering the big screen with a wildly ambitious concert film. Unfortunately for James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Robert Trujillo, the venture proved to be arguably the biggest financial misfire of their storied career.

Americana act Goodnight, Texas have shared a new one-off single “Runaways” featuring legendary Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett.
The track sees the band’s chief songwriters Patrick Dyer Wolf and Avi Vinocur trading their western wear and cowboys hats for black leather — and heavy-ing up their sound in the process. The tune’s burly blues riffs and chunky backbone are more in line with the Black Keys and Graveyard than the band’s typical folk-country fare.
While “Runaways” is a far cry from thrash metal, it’s still prime territory for one of Hammett’s signature wah-wah guitar solos. Here, he lays it down on his iconic Greeny axe, reciprocating Goodnight, Texas’ contribution (“Of Wolf and Man”) to The Metallica Blacklist cover project in 2021.
“This is the hardest we’ve ever rocked on a recording,” Wolf said of the new song in a press release. “That’s thanks in no small...

Metallica kicked off the North American leg of their 2023-2024 “M72 World Tour” on Friday (August 4th) at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band was joined on the bill by fellow metal legends Pantera and rising rockers Mammoth Wvh (led by Wolfgang Van Halen).
The tour (get tickets here) features Metallica performing two completely unique sets (no repeat songs) over two nights in each city, with different support acts each evening. They’ll be right back at MetLife on Sunday (August 6th), with Five Finger Death Punch and Ice Nine Kills opening.
The setup has the bands performing in the round, on a circular stage in the middle of the stadium, with some fans in the “Snakepit” (the center of the circle).
While there was a forecast for thunderstorms on Friday night, that never came to be, making for a comfortable summer evening in New Jersey.

"Unless you are vigilant, you will drown in fear." Adult Swim has debuted a trailer for an animated release titled Metalocalypse: Army of the Doomstar, a feature film spin-off from the animated series called "Metalocalypse". Originally premiering on Adult Swim in 2006, it ran for four seasons with another special Metalocalypse: The Doomstar Requiem (in 2013). The series was created by Brendon Small and Tommy Blancha, and this new movie is written & directed by Small. Can Nathan Explosion look beyond his brutally damaged ego to save his band, stop the Metalocalypse, and finally face the ultimate evil: Salacia? The movie stars the voices of Brendon Small, Tommy Blacha, Victor Brandt, Stephen "Thundercat" Bruner (Grammy Award-winning musician), King Diamond (King Diamond; Mercyful Fate), plus Mark Hamill, Kirk Hammett, Jon Hamm, Scott Ian (Anthrax), Amy Lee (Evanescence), Malcolm McDowell, Juliet Mills, Laraine Newman (SNL), and Livia Zita (2022 winner - Society of Voice Arts and Sciences Award). This looks gnarly!

Canadian Inuk singer-songwriter Elisapie has released a “bold, poignant and powerful” Inuktitut cover of Metallica’s “Unforgiven” in honour of National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21st.
Her version, titled “Isumagijunnaitaungituq (The Unforgiven)”, is the third single off Inuktitut, Elisapie’s upcoming fourth solo album, out via Bonsound on September 15th. The emotionally charged adaptation pays tribute to the Inuit men of her community, and is also a nod to the time she interviewed Kirk Hammett, 60, from Metallica in the early ’90s.
“When I was 14 years old, I applied for a job at Tni, the first Inuit TV-radio broadcaster, and I was thrilled when I was chosen for the position! Everyone at the station dreamed big, and they put in a request for an interview with Metallica. The band was so loved in Salluit that we had to give it a shot,” said the Salluit, Quebec native, 46.

Elisapie, a Canadian Inuk singer-songwriter, plumbs new sadness in one of Metallica’s biggest, most emotional hits on her recording, “Isumagijunnaitaungituq (The Unforgiven).” Where the metal band drew inspiration from Ennio Morricone soundtracks, Spaghetti Westerns, and family trauma for the Black Album hit, Elisapie keeps things quiet, as she sings the lyrics in the indigenous Inuktitut. The instrumentation includes banjo, traditional drums, bass saxophone, throat singing, and saw, in addition to guitar and synth.

Rod Stewart is trading rock ‘n’ roll for swing music after completing his extensive 2023 tour, he said in a recent interview with BBC Breakfast. Watch the clip below.
“I’m not retiring,” Stewart said to BBC host Charlie Stayt. “I’ve just done a swing album with Jools Holland, which is going to come out next year, so I want to go in that direction. I just want to leave all the rock ‘n’ roll stuff behind — for a while, maybe.”
Stewart, while sitting next to upcoming tourmate Boy George, expressed excitement and anticipation for the career pivot, adding that he’s “really looking forward to doing something else” and how his forthcoming work with Jools Holland’s band “borders on rock ‘n’ roll anyway, it’s just not ‘Maggie May’ and ‘Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?'”
It’s not the first time Stewart has mentioned a desire for genre change.

A star-studded gathering of musicians honored the late guitar legend Jeff Beck with two tribute shows on Monday (May 22nd) and Tuesday (May 23rd) at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
Eric Clapton, Metallica’s Kirk Hammett, Rod Stewart, Johnny Depp, Zz Top’s Billy Gibbons, and Aerosmith’s Joe Perry were among the major names who took the stage to perform material and covers that Beck himself played during his lifetime.
Highlights included a rousing cover of Beck and Depp’s take on “Isolation” by John Lennon — performed by Hammett, Gibbons, and Depp (who released the song as a collaborative single with Beck in 2022); Stewart tearing through a four-song medley with Clapton; and Gibbons and Depp taking on Zz Top’s “Rough Boy,” a song Beck and Gibbons used to play together.
Elsewhere, Clapton performed lengthy sets on both nights, dipping into Beck’s songbook for originals like “Beck’s Bolero,...

Can Metallica actually master puppets? That was the question posed to the metal icons on Wednesday night’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, resulting in a hilarious sketch. Oh, and the band also rocked an epic rendition of “Master of Puppets” on the show.
Following his monologue, host Jimmy Kimmel introduced a pre-taped segment in which the four members of Metallica went to marionette school to learn how to become puppeteers. After a quick lesson from the pros, the Rock & Roll Hall of Famers were tasked with performing a theatrical production in front of a group of young children.
Lars Ulrich had the honor of appearing first, controlling a cactus puppet, as he began the story of how Metallica became a band in an amusing high-pitched voice. James Hetfield came out next, manipulating a cat puppet. Soon followed Kirk Hammett, the donkey, and Robert Trujillo, the invisible man.

Millions of music fans all over the world love hearing their favorite songs on vinyl albums. Rock band Metallica recently sold so many vinyl records that they decided to invest in a pressing plant — a reminder that, when it comes to music, newer is not always better.
Metallica just bought a majority stake in vinyl company Furnace Record Pressing
Furnace Record Pressing is one of the biggest vinyl companies in the United States. Founded in 1996, the company has worked with major artists like country star Eric Church, Norah Jones, and punk band Green Day.
Metallica also works with the company and recently decided to take that working relationship to the next level, buying a majority stake in the vinyl pressing company. The price of the purchase has not been disclosed, but members of the band will now sit on the board of Furnace Record Pressing.

Metallica kicked off their weeklong takeover of Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday night (April 10th), chatting with the talk-show host and performing the single “Lux Æterna.”
The metal legends will release their new album, 72 Seasons, on Friday (April 14th), and leading up to its release, they’ll appear on Kimmel every night through Thursday. The Kimmel residency also precedes their 2023-2024 world tour, which kicks off later this month (tickets available here).
Kimmel started the jokes early, greeting James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Robert Trujillo as “the most adorable boy band of all time.”
When Kimmel commented that he saw a line of their fans in the morning, and noticed that “half of them looked like they were in high school,” Ulrich responded, ‘That’s the boy band in us! I don’t think they know how old we are. Let’s keep this a secret between all of us.

Metallica conjure the “wrath of man” in a molten hellscape in the video for “72 Seasons,” the title track of their upcoming album. James Hetfield sings bleak lyrics like “staring into black light, permanently midnight” and “mad seasons take their toll” while playing heavy, piston-chugging riffs. The song is a nearly eight-minute, epic journey reckoning with “72 seasons gone” – referring to the first 18 years of life – and all the hardships that accompany coming of age (plus a fiery, wah-wah inflected solo by Kirk Hammett, who cowrote the track with Hetfield and drummer...

Metallica have dropped the new song “72 Seasons” — the title track of their forthcoming album, arriving April 14th.
The band teased a significant portion of the song’s music video on social media before releasing the full track and music video today (March 30th). The performance clip sees the band illuminated by red lasers, giving off the effect of Metallica barreling through space.
It’s fitting visuals for what is the fastest and grooviest of the four singles we’ve heard from 72 Seasons, following “Lux Æterna,” “Screaming Suicide,” and “If Darkness Had a Son.” James Hetfield may have recently said that he and his fellow bandmates were “average” players, but this new track proves otherwise.
Lars Ulrich is locked into the pocket of the quick tempo, and the riff structures and palm-muted chugs hit with undeniable power. Hetfield’s more pronounced drawl also works nicely around the arrangement and vocal melody,...

Few guitars are as famous as the 1959 Les Paul Standard known as “Greeny.” Originally owned by blues-rock legend Peter Green during his time with Fleetwood Mac, the axe came into the possession of Thin Lizzy’s Gary Moore, who played it for decades. It’s currently owned by Metallica’s Kirk Hammett, having passed through the hands of three guitar legends.
Now Hammett and Gibson are bringing “Greeny” to the masses with the new 1959 Les Paul Standard Burst signature model, replicating the original. A Gibson Custom Shop version is out today (March 28th) and retails for an eye-popping $19,999. Meanwhile, the Les Paul Standard arrives April 11th, presumably at a much lower price.
“I am very honored and grateful for this opportunity with Gibson,” Hammett said in a press release. “To be able to share some of that mojo which ‘Greeny’ has means a lot to me. It’s exciting to...

Metallica have shared the new song “If Darkness Had a Son” — the third single from their upcoming album 72 Seasons, out April 14th.
The legendary metal band teased the track on TikTok earlier this week, prompting fans to perform a duet with the music as each member of Metallica added their respective part in a string of TikToks. It was later revealed the track, titled “If Darkness Had a Son,” would be released in full today (March 1st).
Now, the full seven-minute studio track is out (listen below), kicking off with military-style drums from Lars Ulrich and featuring a chugging guitar riff. James Hetfield’s vocals don’t kick in until a minute-and-a-half into the song, as he repeats the lyric “Temptation” multiple times.
Overall, Metallica steer this one into a more mid-tempo alternative metal direction as opposed to the direct thrash of previous singles “Lux Æterna,” and “Screaming Suicide.” Hetfield maintains a melodic,...

Metallica have taken to TikTok to tease what appears to be another new track off their upcoming album, 72 Seasons. An accompanying caption encourages fans to duet with the clip.
The 80-second instrumental has thus far been rolled out in three videos via the band’s TikTok channel, with each member essentially duetting with the previous clip. The first one features just Lars Ulrich playing drums, the next adds bassist Robert Trujillo, and the most recent one adds frontman James Hetfield. It can be assumed that Kirk Hammett’s contribution to the track will be posted on Tuesday.
The tune offers a chugging riff accompanied by military-like drumming. If this new piece of music does turn out to be a new song from 72 Seasons, it would follow previous singles “Lux Æterna” and “Screaming Suicide.”
With the caption “Duet this,” fans have already offered up some fun (and funny) accompaniments to the song.

‘Santa Claws’ – A Sleazy, Cheesy Holiday Oddity from ‘Night of the Living Dead’ Co-Writer John Russo
While George A. Romero was able to parlay the success of Night of the Living Dead into a career in the film industry, co-writer John A. Russo never quite found his footing. Any filmmaker would be lucky to have a movie a fraction as impactful as Night of the Living Dead on their resume, but Russo’s cinematic imprint beyond that was minimal.
In addition to publishing numerous books and producing The Return of the Living Dead and the 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead, Russo wrote and directed a handful of independent horror movies over the years. Although they failed to reach a wide audience, he generated a few low-budget cult classics, including the 1996 Christmas slasher Santa Claws.

Metallica performed their new song “Lux Æterna” live for the first time Friday night at the band’s annual benefit concert in support of their All Within My Hands Foundation.
“We thought that this is such a special gig here that we’d play ‘Lux Æterna,’ which is the first single from it. We’ll play that for the first time here live. How about that?” James Hetfield told the crowd.
After a false start, the metal legends then launched into the debut performance of the 72 Seasons single, which they released in late November.

“Lux Æterna” is old school thrash, picking right up where Hardwired… to Self-Destruct left off, only this time, guitarist Kirk Hammett was involved in the writing.
72 Seasons will be available April 14, 2023, via the band’s own Blackened Recordings. Produced by Greg Fidelman with founding members James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, and clocking in at over 77 minutes, the 12-track album is Metallica’s first full length collection of new material since 2016’s Hardwired…To Self-Destruct.
Here’s the track listing for 72 Seasons:
01. 72 Seasons
02. Shadows Follow
03. Screaming Suicide
04. Sleepwalk My Life Away
05. You Must Burn!
06. Lux Æterna
07. Crown Of Barbed Wire
08. Chasing Light
09. If Darkness Had A Son
10. Too Far Gone?
11. Room Of Mirrors
12. Inamorata
“72 seasons. The first 18 years of our lives that form our true or false selves,” said Hetfield of the album’s title.

Eddie Munson may have sacrificed himself to save his friends, but he's still getting a chance to live out his dreams via Joseph Quinn. Just days after Metallica posted a video tribute to "Stranger Things" favorite (and Metallica superfan) Eddie on Instagram, the band invited Quinn to jam with them, gifted the actor with a guitar much like the one his character played on the show, and even projected Eddie's now famous "Master of Puppets" scene on the stage behind them during the band's Thursday night performance at Lollapalooza.
For his part, Quinn was ecstatic to officially meet the band whose music he lived and breathed for two years. "It's all I was listening to for two years," Quinn said in a video of the meeting shared by Netflix. "I feel very connected to you guys."

Hours before Metallica acknowledged the Stranger Things-fueled resurgence of their “Master of Puppets” during their Lollapalooza set, the metal legends hung out and jammed backstage with actor Joseph Quinn, whose character Eddie Munson is responsible for the song’s renewed popularity.
Quinn was on-site at the Chicago fest, where Netflix arranged a meet-up between Metallica and the actor. “I’m a big fan of [Stranger Things]. Have been since Season One,” James Hetfield told Quinn. “My kids and I, it’s a bonding experience for us.”...

Metallica has taken their affiliation with Eddie Munson and “Stranger Things” to yet another level.
First, there was a TikTok tribute earlier this month. Then the legendary band heaped effusive praise on the Netflix hit show’s use of their song, “Master of Puppets,” in a post on Instagram.
For the coup de grâce, they went real-world this week, inviting Joesph Quinn backstage to jam with them at Chicago’s Lollapalooza.
Quinn, of course, plays the guitar-shredding Eddie on “Strangers Things.” Turns out, he can play the lick in real life, too.

“You’re taller than on the TV,” James Hetfield told Quinn as he met the Metallica frontman and bandmates Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo, footage of which was edited and posted online by Netflix.
Quinn thanked the band for letting “Stranger Things” use “Master of Puppets.

Where Kate Bush goes, Metallica follows… with the veteran rockers looking set to break into the UK music chart for the first time in 40 years, thanks once again to the phenomenon of Stranger Things.
The heavy metal stalwarts have seen their profile cross over from their diehard fans to a brand new mainstream audience since their Master of Puppets rock anthem provided the soundtrack for a key scene in the finale of the most recent season. Joseph Quinn’s character Eddie Munson used fretboard dynamics to distract the “demobats” in the Upside Down while dedicating the song to his murdered friend, “Chrissy, this is for you!”
In recent weeks, the song has received more than 17million streams on Spotify. As well as hovering around the UK chart, it has appeared in the US Billboard chart for the first time since it was released in 1986.
