Safe to say few movies this year engender more excitement than Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Serpent’s Path, a remake of his superb, bad-vibes 1998 thriller. Though an expected Cannes debut didn’t come to pass, the film releases in France on June 14; we now have a trailer that shows the known cast members with the pleasant surprise of Drive My Car‘s Hidetoshi Nishijima, and though enthusiasts of the original will spot bare bones of its revenge plot, quick shots imply scenes and scenarios not in Kurosawa’s original. News of U.S. acquisition already feels overdue.
Here’s the synopsis: “An intense desire for revenge fills Albert Bacheret: his daughter Marie. This father, exalted by violence, joins forces with Sayoko, to find and kill the culprits one by one. But at the same time, Sayoko leads her own mission of revenge which risks turning against Albert at any moment… Sayoko Mijima,...

When Johnny Depp Revealed The Real Reason Behind Choosing Quirky Roles(Photo Credit –Instagram)
Johnny Depp is a top-rated actor in Hollywood known for doing unorthodox movie roles. From Edward Scissorhands to Mad Hatter in the Alice in Wonderland film series, he is known for these notable roles. One of his most epic roles is that of Captain Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Depp earned his fortunes from these characters; he once opened up about taking up these parts, and, honestly, people cannot imagine other actors in those roles.
The A-lister debuted his first feature film in 1984 with A Nightmare on Elm Street. He and Tim Burton often collaborated on multiple films. Burton is known for the Gothic themes in his movies, and Depp has benefitted largely from them. The use of folklore and native legends as a source for content in the horror genre stretches back decades, whether it be for minuscule scenes within the larger narrative or wholesale films based on such stories. Ranging from the likes of Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster and other cryptids to simpler stuff like “When a Stranger Calls” or “Urban Legends,” it’s all fairly commonly used as a building block that serves up some intriguing content. Directors Chalit Krileadmongkon and Pakphun Wongjinda, hot on the heels of their successful creature feature “Leio: The Terrible Giant” (or the rebranded US title “The Beast Beneath”), team up again with inspiration from a Thai legend of a human-possessing centipede to deliver another stellar creature feature in “Creepy Crawly” on Digital and Blu-Ray from WellGo USA on October 3.

The first trailer for Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” has arrived, and it’s positively brimming with Poe. The limited series is set to premiere all eight episodes on Netflix on Oct. 12.
This first look jumps between several unsettling scenes, from lurking ravens to murderous ladies and seemingly other-worldly creatures. As Madeline Usher (Mary McDonnell) curtly reveals that the family will “exhaust our arsenal until the threat’s neutralized,” Arthur Pym (Mark Hamill) pours over an active crime scene. Naturally, for Flanagan’s work, it all comes to a head with the appearance of Carla Gugino’s mysterious and skull mask-wearing Verna.
“Roderick Usher, your family is a collection of stunted horrors whose time has come,” Verna warns.
When asked who she is, Verna says, “Consequence. And tonight is consequential.”

If you were still on the fence about snagging the Abducted Edition of Perp Games’ The Greyhill Incident when it arrives in June, the developers have announced that this version of the game will have a special ‘Found Footage’ mode. What’s that, you ask? You can see for yourself with the new video.
Essentially, the Found Footage mode adds a cliché (but still creepy) grainy black-and-white handheld video camera filter to the visuals of The Greyhill Incident that will no doubt only enhance the tension and scares. It really does look like you’re viewing the game through a camcorder, right down to the rolling picture.
And in case you missed it, PlayStation owners will also have the opportunity to snag a Physical version of the Abducted Edition. This includes the game, as well as a guide to creating a tinfoil hat, a newspaper clipping that details the first alien invasion,...

Stars: Go Ayano, Koen Kondo, Masahiro Higashide, Jun Kunimura, Etsushi Toyokawa, Masatoshi Nagase | Written by Kankurô Kudô | Directed by Gakuryû Ishii
”It was a somewhat gloomy day”. Thus begins Punk Samurai, director Gakuryû, formerly Sogo, Ishii and writer Kankurô Kudô’s adaptation of Kou Machida’s supposedly unfilmable novel.
Junoshin Kake wanders into the domain of the Kurokaze clan and promptly kills a beggar who approaches him. He tells Shume Nagaoka a low-level official in the clan, that the man was a member of a dangerous religious cult that only he can save them from. That’s enough to create the opening he needs to find a permanent position in Lord Kuroae’s employ.
Kake plans to exploit the rivalry between two of the clan’s top retainers Shuzen Oura and Tatewaki Naito to rise through the ranks. The only problem is, the cult, The Bellyshaker Party no longer exists and Naito knows it.

Put a bunch of narcissists in a big house with a lot of drugs and booze, a hurricane, a sword and more staircases than they know how to go up and down on, and you’ve got a recipe for disaster.
This is the premise of Halina Reijn’s bloody satire “Bodies Bodies Bodies,” a movie that, not unlike its heroes, is often vicious if not a little empty-minded.
“Bodies Bodies Bodies” begins with a kiss, tongue and all: this is Sophie (Amandla Stenberg) and Bee, two young lovers going to meet the former’s best friends on a weekend upstate. Sophie warns Bee that her friends are not as bad as they seem, undoubtedly code for being worse than they look.

Gene Simmons tweeted Saturday, “Sad to find out Ken Kelly, who painted our Destroyer album cover passed away. A kind and beloved gentleman. Rest In Peace.”

If Dexter Morgan thought he had problems before, Sunday’s episode of Dexter: New Blood raised the stakes in some major ways.
Not only did things take a rough turn with teen son Harrison — the boy Od-ed at a party! — but someone close to Dex learned the stone-cold truth behind his “Jim Lindsay” alias. Plus, an old face from the series proper made a surprise return, and Kurt Caldwell’s true villainy was more or less confirmed. It was a meaty episode, so let’s dive right into this recap of “Runaway.”

I for one will never tire of them: those assorted candy boxes with always one or two disagreeable sorts to spit out, but overall filled with enjoyable treats. And so it goes in the movies as well; call them horror portmanteaus, omnibuses, or lotsashortstogether, they offer outrageous highs littered with occasional lows that offer a sugar rush once the box is done. Tales from the Crypt (1972) is one of my favorite examples of a horrific sampler.
This Amicus production was given a release by Twentieth Century Fox in its native UK, and by Cinerama Releasing Corporation in the US, and did quite well on both sides of the pond. Cinerama got the jump in March, with the UK afforded spookier seasonal vibes that September. Critics were kind to this latest from the studio that gave us Torture Garden and The House That Dripped Blood, and spotlit Peter Cushing in perhaps his most poignant role.

Central to any spy story worth its salt is the tension built around whom the audience should believe. But the memorable ones make just as powerful the theme of what the characters really do believe — as in, why they do what they do, whether they’re handler, agent, target or pawn. And to make matters even more fascinating, when some of those questions are left unanswered, that’s when some spy yarns achieve something profound about the battlefield on which they’re played.
Kiyoshi Kurosawa is one of Japan’s established masters when it comes to a knotty premise wracked with tension and secrets, whether working in horror or contemporary drama (“Tokyo Sonata”). It seems fitting, then, that for his first period film, he’d choose a World War II–era espionage tale, where identity and motive are always in play, and horror is real. The wait for “Black Widow” is just about over, meaning critics can finally share their thoughts on Scarlett Johansson’s long-awaited solo Marvel film and the first post-pandemic flick in the MCU. Many reviews have praised the movie’s high-octane action and empowering message, but one critic seems to have missed the memo on the latter point, leading readers to slam him as “creepy” and “f—ing gross.”
Published on Tuesday, Peter Bradshaw’s review of “Black Widow” for The Guardian includes some bizarre observations, beginning with its opening sentence. “The sensuous cough-syrup purr of Scarlett Johansson’s voice is something I’ve missed in lockdown,” Bradshaw wrote. “Now it’s back with a throaty vengeance.”
But wait, there’s also an unnecessary detour into the protagonist’s “daddy issues.” Later in the piece, Bradshaw surmises about Black Widow’s relationship with her father, played by David Harbour, and whether...

Last August, in the midst of a presidential battle that would determine the future of America, an upstart liberal group called MeidasTouch sent its supporters an urgent call to action. “Tonight is a huge night,” MeidasTouch declared on Twitter. “We are giving half of our contributions directly and immediately to Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. We are proud to have already chipped in 25K to their campaign. Rt and chip in here.”
For MeidasTouch, the pro-Biden blitz was part of a rapidly expanding political action committee that turned viral tweets and posts into campaign contributions.

Although the name Kiyoshi Kurosawa has become synonymous for the early days of J-horror as well as effective thrillers such as “Creepy”, the director is also known to experiment within genres, finding new ways of storytelling and visualizing a world. One of those cinematic experiments may also be “Beautiful New Bay Area Project”, a short feature commissioned by the Hong Kong International Film Festival and which screened at international festivals such as the 13th edition of the New York Asian Film Festival. Currently streaming on Mubi, it blends elements of drama and martial arts with an additional comment about the mentality of certain corporations changing the landscape of a city.

While the math is way off – there’s no more than one hundred, tops – The Night of a Thousand Cats (1972) offers 63 minutes (!) of outlandish fun, decadent behavior, and a proclivity towards the absurd. Just don’t expect a story from this Mexican release; it seems around thirty minutes were cut for the North American release, leaving behind a mess of the rest that is nevertheless very entertaining.
Released in Mexico in early August, Cats didn’t arrive stateside until November of ’74, where it came and went pretty quickly. Reviews were…well, what do you think? There still really hasn’t been a reconsideration of the film all these years later; it remains hanging out just below the surface of modern horror culture.
And by hanging out I mean mostly hiding from shame; Night has a couple moments where cats appear to be mishandled, and I’m pretty sure there weren...

Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s big-screen adaptation of Rokuro Inui’s novel A Perfect Day for Plesiosaur marks the director’s slow transition from horrors like “Cure” and “Retribution” to more recent dramas including 2017’s “Before We Vanish” and “To the Ends of the Earth.” In this genre mashup of thriller, science fiction, drama, romance, and monster movie, Kurosawa creates an experience which is bound to be bizarre and disorienting, even for viewers who are accustomed to his surreal style.
The story revolves around Koichi Fujita, a neurologist with access to new and innovative technology, trying to access the depths of his comatose lover’s mind. Atsumi Kazu is a manga artist who had attempted to kill herself the year before, after a negative experience with writer’s block, and has been unconscious ever since. Creepy (Kiyoshi Kurosawa)
One has to appreciate Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s winking self-awareness in calling his new feature Creepy. It’s as if the Coen brothers released a film entitled Snarky, or Eli Roth named his next stomach-churner Gory. Kurosawa, who’s still best known for Cure (1997) and Pulse (2001), two rare outstanding examples of the highly variable J-Horror genre, instills a sense of creepiness into virtually anything he does, regardless of subject matter. His latest, which sees him return to the realm of horror after excursions into more arthouse territory, certainly lives up to its name and has a lot of fun doing so. – Giovanni M.C. (full review)

Japanese filmmaker Kiyoshi Kurosawa is a directorial polyglot, no doubt about it, but he’s more fluent in some cinematic languages than others. Having more or less co-founded the J-horror wave, and with “Pulse” and “Cure,” giving it an artistic and thematic depth it only rarely attained without him, he then spent the best part of the last two decades turning in dour sci-fi, turgid metaphysical melodramas, and grimly forgettable serial killer movies (“Creepy“).

After leveraging his success in J-horror into a string of grounded social dramas that culminated with the 2008 masterpiece “Tokyo Sonata,” Japanese auteur Kurosawa Kiyoshi seemed to hit the ceiling of his talent or grow bored of himself. Possibly both. The years that followed told the story of a restless artist who was desperate for something — anything — that might live up to the prescient chill of “Pulse,” or the disquieting uncertainty of “Bright Future.”
Kurosawa’s search led him down an increasingly esoteric path that saw him zig-zag from a pair of lifeless ghost dramas (“Journey to the Shore” and the French-language “Daguerreotype”), to an interminable alien invasion throwback (“Before We Vanish”), a toothless “return-to-form” (the psychological thriller “Creepy”), and even the godforsaken wilds of television. By the time last year’s odd and comparatively entrancing “To the Ends of the Earth” found the director trawling for purpose in the arid sands of Uzbekistan,...

A “creepy” a cappella group at Dylan Holmes Williams’ university led the filmmaker to make a dark comedy short titled “The Devil’s Harmony,” about a bullied teenage girl who uses her music group to get revenge on her fellow classmates.
“I had the original idea because I was making a music video for an a cappella club and I realized how incredibly creepy they are, and I realized that that could be a starting point for a high school horror short,” Williams, one of the finalists in TheWrap’s ShortList Film Festival, told TheWrap. “Some of them have seen it, one of them is now a director, and he said it’s a very accurate description of what it’s like to be in an a cappella group. In the mid to late '60s, Warren Publishing added a significant strand to the presentation of comics via the publication of titles such as Creepy, Eerie and Vampirella, which duplicated the general approach of the EC-style horror and science fiction comic anthologies of the '50s, but with a magazine format aimed at adults that cleverly skirted the comics code and thus allowed for unprecedented creative freedom within the field of American comics. By the early '70s, in parallel to the evolution of the Hollywood New Wave Movement Warren's approach had grown similarly multilayered and internationally inspired, showcasing comics and painted pieces by American auteur pulp masters like Frank Frazetta, Neal Adams, Alex Toth and Richard Corben alongside work by emerging auteur European artists like Esteban Maroto, Jose Gonzalez and Jose Ortiz.

David Koepp’s You Should Have Left commits the cinematic sin of embracing boredom with the utmost forgettability. Damned if I’m writing this review at 1:00 Am with droopy eyelids because by morning, I’ll have retained maybe a minute’s worth of Koepp’s unhaunted house snoozer. It’s “Creepy Hallways: The Movie,” except subtract the “Creepy” and have Kevin Bacon’s greatest adversarial face-off be with a staircase. I wish something happened, anything happened, worth retreating into a curled, protective audience position. Instead, a romantic quarrel “intensifies” with supposed “twists” that couldn’t be more unenthusiastic or without tension. To quote a more favorable 2020 film, “Terrifically competent, there’s no excuse for that.”
Except remove “Terrifically” and put another set of question marks around “competent” for emphasis.
Bacon plays sixty-something Theo Conroy, a husband with jealously issues to thirties starlet Susanna (Amanda Seyfried) and father to the...

The game is on. Chris Rock’s follow-up film in the “Saw” universe of horror movies has a first look teaser and a new title: “Spiral.”
Rock stars as a detective who stumbles across Jigsaw’s game from the outside and tries to track down the killer to solve the mystery, all seemingly while the other events of the previous “Saw” films seem to be taking place. It’s unclear whether the film is explicitly a sequel, prequel or spinoff, but it is a passion project for Rock, who executive produced “Spiral” and based the story off of his own love for the franchise.
Samuel L. Jackson will play Rock’s father in the film who likewise gets sucked into Jigsaw’s violent and bloody game. Max Minghella will play William Schenk, Rock’s partner on the police force, and Marisol Nichols will play Capt. Angie Garza, Rock’s boss.

Turns that’s not entirely outside the realm of possibility, after director Nicolas Pesce revealed his desire to develop future sequels that would take The Grudge outside the confines of Japan and America “and potentially even leave the modern era.”
Those comments come by way of Bloody Disgusting’s “The Boo Crew” Podcast, where Pesce appeared to promote his R-rated horror flick ahead of its long-anticipated premiere in North America this weekend (UK viewers will be able to experience full-frontal terror from January 24th). In Janelle Monáe’s latest film, a horror movie called “Antebellum,” the horror she’s living stems all the way back to the slave period in American history.
The first teaser for “Antebellum” begins with a black woman running through a field and screaming in agony while in the distance some men in confederate uniforms chase her down on horses. But all the while, the only sounds we hear are the modern day noises of a plane flying overhead and a 911 operator desperately trying to help whomever is on the other side of the line.
The film specifically stars Monáe as successful author Veronica Henley, finds herself trapped in a horrifying reality and must uncover the mind-bending mystery before it’s too late. There’s also a creepy little girl in Civil War-era clothing who probably has something to do with whatever nightmare Monáe’s character is living through.
