Holland, Michigan
Director: Errol Morris

Producers: Adam Kassan, John Lesher
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Naomi Watts, Bryan Cranston, Edgar Ramírez
Documentarian Errol Morris has signed on to direct not one, but two fiction feature films (he’s only ever done that once before, back in 1991 with the Lou Diamond Philips starrer The Dark Wind). Initially, it looked like the Christopher Walken/Paul Rudd headlining Freezing People Is Easy was set to film first, but now it looks as if it will be Holland, Michigan, set to roll this spring. While that may be cutting it close for a reasonable 2014 release, the 65 year old Morris has an efficient track record, so we shall see. As for Ms. Watts, she’s currently filming with Noah Baumbach for a film set to be released in 2015. This would be her next project, and, then maybe, finally, she’ll get...

She’s currently braving festival reactions to her portrayal of the Queen of Hearts in Diana, but for a new job, Naomi Watts wants to work with Oscar-winning documentarian Errol Morris. She’s in talks to star in his new thriller, Holland, Michigan.Written by Andrew Sodroski, the plot details are mostly under wraps, but Deadline has learned that it’s set in the suburbs and will be laced with pitch-black humour. While it’s unusual to see Morris not making a documentary these days, he does have form in fictional filmmaking, and is attached to at least two other projects, including Freezing People Is Easy. With Diana due here on September 20, Watts will follow that with St. Vincent alongside Melissa McCarthy and Bill Murray, and Alejandro González Iñárritu’s theatrical comedy Birdman. She will not, however, be starring in Werner Herzog’s Gertrude Bell biopic Queen Of The Desert,...

Errol Morris's name tends to be met with a hush of reverence in documentary-making circles, but he's no newcomer to the feature-making either. He's attached himself to another, Holland, Michigan, his first since 1991's Lou Diamond Phillips crime procedural The Dark Wind. An Oscar-winner with The Fog Of War and a law-changer with The Thin Blue Line, Morris is turning his attention to a movie that Deadline calls "a suburban thriller laced with black humor", presumably set on the eastern banks of Lake Michigan. Holland, Michigan is written by Harvard grad and newbie screenwriter Andrew Sodroski, and will be produced by Le Grisbi’s John Lesher and Adam Kassan. When Empire met Morris for Tabloid last year, he talked about making "a dramatic feature about the first man to be cryogenically frozen", so his documentary work may be on the backburner for the foreseeable future. That sci-fi-sounding project goes...

Master documentarian Errol Morris is largely known for his fascinating profiles into the odder and darker corners of humanity that still somehow manage to resonate with nearly everyone who crosses his films. Everything from pet cemeteries ("Gates Of Heaven") to war veterans ("The Fog Of War") to physicists ("A Brief History Of Time") to a woman's adventures in kidnapping and cloning ("Tabloid"), Morris chases his fascinations wherever they take him. However, feature films are something he hasn't completely ignored. In 1991, he directed the not very well received "The Dark Wind," and while a long feature break followed, the pieces seemed to be coming together for "Freezing People Is Easy" last year with a star-studded cast -- Paul Rudd, Owen Wilson, Kirsten Wiig and Christopher Walken -- but then all went quiet. But now it looks like Morris is getting on-board a different fictional feature. Deadline reports that he'll direct "Holland,...

Freezing People is Easy
Director: Errol Morris
Writer(s): Zach Helm (Stranger Than Fiction)
Producer(s): Film Rites’ Steven Zaillian and Garrett Basch with Ira Glass, Alissa Shipp
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Paul Rudd, Kristen Wiig, Christopher Walken, Owen Wilson
A play on words from the infamous Radiohead concert film, Errol Morris has been a dominant force in the docu field and his second foray into fiction filmmaking appears to be perfectly suited for the filmmaker’s sensibilities. Not that far removed from the truth – this combines the nuttiness of the broad type of characters we would generally find on This American Life, it would most likely incorporate Morris’ genuine almost trademark interest in the human condition and the absurdities that come with it. Great cast could bring this into Gondry-esque type territory.

After a trio of titles (92′s A Brief History of Time ,97′s Fast Cheap & Out of Control, 99′s Mr. Death: The Rise and Fall of Fred A. Leuchter, Jr.) Errol Morris hasn’t presented a docu at the fest in some time. A promo reel was shown in Cannes and at Tiff, RADiUS-twc picked up the rights and mention that a 2013 release is planned for The Unknown Known: The Life and Times of Donald Rumsfeld. Logically they might want to lock the helmer down before it conflicts with the production of Freezing People Is Easy – Morris’ feature debut.
Gist: Former United States Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld, discusses his career in Washington D.C. from his days as a congressman in the early 1960s to planning the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Taking a decidedly dark turn in project choices after the success of the uber-charming Midnight in Paris and his recently-signed deals for comedies like Freezing People Is Easy and You Are Here, actor Owen Wilson will soon star in the Dowdle Brothers’ The Coup. A dark thriller from the team at Crime Scene Pictures, The Coup appears to be Wilson’s most emotionally demanding role in years, since something like 2001′s Behind Enemy Lines. The press release announcing the project describes the film as “an intense thriller centered on an American family that moves to Southeast Asia and finds themselves embroiled in a violent coup where rebels mercilessly attack the city.” Wilson will play the family’s patriarch. John Erick Dowdle will direct the film from a script he co-wrote with his brother, Drew Dowdle. John Erick previously directed Devil, and the brothers wrote The Poughkeepsie Tapes and Quarantine together, with...

The news that Kristen Wiig, Jason Sudeikis and Andy Samberg may leave "Saturday Night Live" at the end of the current season has fans wondering why their favorite stars are looking to jump and how they'll fare once they've departed the safety of the sketch-comedy institution to pursue TV and movie stardom.
Neither Sudeikis nor Samberg has commented on the rumors, but on Alec Baldwin's podcast Monday, Wiig did address the departure talk, though she neither confirmed nor denied the chatter. "I don't know," Wiig told Baldwin when asked if her tenure as one of the most beloved "SNL" performers was nearly up. "Everyone has to leave ... and I will say that when I do leave,...

Controversy has never scared off Errol Morris, and in fact, it has powered some of his best work. From the true crime tale "The Thin Blue Line," powerful portraits of war in "The Fog of War" and "Standard Operating Procedure," and more recently the JFK assassination (in the astounding short "The Umbrella Man"; watch it here) he has faced some tough material head on with tremendous insight. And his next effort promises nothing less.
Vulture reports that Morris and his Interrotron sat down last month with Donald Rumsfeld for a series of interviews covering his entire career. If somehow you have no idea who this guy this (and really, you should), he has impacted American politics in huge and very controversial ways. Most know him as the Secretary of Defense under George W. Bush who came up with the framework for "enhanced interrogation techniques." Or as the guy who eluded...

With Paul Weitz's "Being Flynn" beginning its limited rollout in theaters this weekend, the helmer isn't wasting any time getting to this next pic. The project, titled "Admission," has been brewing for over a year now, with Tina Fey attached to star, and it was just over a week ago that the director said he still intends to make it his next film. And it seems the wheels are starting to turn.
Vulture reports that Owen Wilson is now eyeing a role in the movie. Based on the book by Jean Hanff Korelitz, the story centers on Portia Nathan (Fey), a Princeton admissions officer whose (non-sexual/romantic) relationship with a 17-year-old prospect causes discord with her live-in partner Mark, an English professor at the school. Should Wilson come aboard, he'd be playing a teacher at an alternative high school who falls in love with Portia. But whether or not...

[1] Zach Helm doesn't have too many produced screenplays on his resume at this point, but the writer got off to an auspicious start with 2006's flawed but charming Stranger Than Fiction before making his directorial debut with 2007's Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium, which he also wrote. Although the latter wasn't quite as well received as the former, he's got a couple of projects on his upcoming slate that sound promising. The first is Errol Morris' Freezing People is Easy, an adaptation of Robert Nelson's cryogenic preservation memoir We Froze the First Man, which cast [2] Owen Wilson, Kristen Wiig, and Christopher Walken last week. Now he's also been tapped to write Deep Water, a "dark, sexy comedy" based on the thriller by Patricia Highsmith. Highsmith's books have served as the inspiration for dozens of films over the years, starting with Alfred Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train. The last...

The stories of author Patricia Highsmith have made some devilish and entertaining films in the past. She is responsible for tales that inspired such films as Strangers on a Train and The Talented Mr. Ripley. Now, via THR, word is coming out that Highsmith‘s novel Deep Water is being turned into a film which will be penned by writer Zach Helm.
The novel, published in 1957, follows the story of a suburban couple that agrees to have an open marriage as a means of avoiding a divorce. However, things take a turn for the unpleasant when the wife’s lovers begin to disappear. Helms has made a name for himself with screenplays for films such as Stranger Than Fiction and Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium, which he also directed.

It has been no secret that Universal wants to sequelize "Bridesmaids," but they've found a roadblock in form of its creator, co-writer and star Kristen Wiig. Demurring from any talk of a sequel, Wiig has done everything except sign on to another followup to the breakout comedy hit of 2011. She's lined up a slate of projects -- "Imogene," "The Comedian," and the recently announced "Freezing People Is Easy" -- but Universal isn't going to wait around. The studio has every intention of going forward with "Bridesmaids" sequel whether it's with Wiig or without, but it seems they may miss out on another integral ingredient to film's success. E! caught up with SAG nominee and Oscar hopeful Melissa McCarthy over the weekend at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, and when asked about a sequel with Wiig, she made her feelings very clear on the matter. "God, I wouldn't want to.

Exclusive: Paul Rudd, Owen Wilson, Kristen Wiig, and Christopher Walken are circling Freezing People Is Easy, a script by Zach Helm (Stranger Than Fiction) that Academy Award-winning filmmaker Errol Morris will direct. Film Rites’ Steve Zaillian and Garrett Basch are producing with This American Life‘s Ira Glass and Alissa Shipp. Inspired by the memoir We Froze The First Man and an episode of This American Life, the film tell the true story of Bob Nelson, a 1960s Los Angeles television repairman who tried to pioneer the field of cryogenics by freezing humans. He quickly discovered that it was more difficult than he imagined. The cast is pretty much locked — Rudd has been attached for months to play Nelson — though Bridesmaids star Wiig is the variable: she’s completing her run on Saturday Night Live and poring over several offers.
