Once in a while a movie comes along that makes you sit up and take notice. The 4th Reich has developed, much like a marauding disease, into something of a passion for Filmshaft. It’s good to give coverage and support to films that aren’t the usual run-of-the-mill productions or big blockbusters with ant-sized brains.
The 4th Reich promises zombies, the legendary Tom Savini, WW2-set adventure, Josef Mengele a.k.a The Angel of Death, Nazis, Nazi zombies and an excellent band of movie brothers-in-arms such as Jason Flemyng, Sean Pertwee, Martin Compston and Doug Bradley. Frankly, genre cinema doesn’t get any damn cooler.
We really must credit our ace team member, Alex Wagner, for raving about the film since he first got whiff of it like a zombie smells fresh meat. His enthusiasm was…dare I say it…infectious. Okay, I said it!

It’s no secret that here at Filmshaft we have much love for a certain upcoming little film called The 4th Reich. Zombies, Nazi’s, Sean Pertwee and Tom Savini are all elements that when combined should most definitely result in explosive cinema. Add to the mix a promising Brit director and The 4th Reich is something I really can’t wait for.
As if things couldn’t get more exciting for the upcoming film a massive bombshell of an announcement has been released. It has been confirmed that none other than Doug Bradley will be appearing in the film as SS-Hauptsturmfuhrer Gast. Horror fans rejoice, as this is an actor responsible for one of the most iconic performances in modern cinema history.
Pinhead himself will be sharing the screen with Tom Savini! This has to be geek horror fan heaven!
Director Shaun Robert Smith has more good news this week.

Nazi zombies are really hot (or should I say cold?) again thanks to Dead Snow and Call of Duty: World at War so it's a no-brainer that a horror flick called The 4th Reich is picking up some major steam by filling out its already packing cast!
We just received word that Hellraiser's Doug Bradley has been confirmed to play SS-Hauptsturmfuhrer Gast. Bradley will be joining the already announced Tom Savini, Sean Pertwee, Axelle Carolyn, Simon Bamford, and Craig Conway in Shaun Robert Smith's undead opus.

The Nazi zombie genre is not as huge as some may think, only 5 films populate this subgenre: Shockwaves, Zombie Lake, Oasis of the Zombies, Night of the Zombies, and, most recently, Dead Snow. Some may argue for Outpost as well, but that's about it. Shaun Robert Smith plans to add another to the pantheon.
The young British director is heading into production on The 4th Reich, which starts shooting in 3-D in mid-April. The film starts Tom Savini, Sean Pertwee (Dog Soldiers), and Craig Conway (Doomsday, the upcoming Devil's Playground). Here's the synopsis:

Shaun Robert Smith’s (The Soldier, This Place) new Nazi-horror film, The 4th Reich, is currently in production and promises tons of gore, great design and visuals from the land of Poland and Ukraine. What happens when the Third Reich’s test experiments are used to create the ultimate evil? You get the 4th Reich of course! Did I mention that this is all going to be in 3D? “June 1944, after the glorious victory on D-day, the armies of the combined allied forces begin their long push to Berlin with the aim of bringing down Hitler and the despised Nazi regime of [...]

Film blogs and websites get so inundated with news of big Hollywood productions — and a few smaller ones that get more of the limelight — that it’s easy to overlook smaller films. A few months ago, I had the opportunity to interview up-and-coming UK director Shaun Robert Smith about his upcoming film The 4th Reich (if you do a Google search for his name and interview, I’m sure it will come up).
Who could ignore a film with a synopsis like this?

Earlier this year, Fango exposed readers to a short film winning much acclaim in the UK titled The Soldier (you can read about it here). At the time, it was hinted that the movie might spawn a full-length feature, and Fango got word from director Shaun Robert Smith that The 4th Reich is moving ahead, shooting next spring with some pretty big names and exciting prospects.
“This is going to be the mother of all zombie films,” Smith tells Fango; he also passed on the production art seen here. “Not just that, but a heavy historical aspect too; you could say we are working on a war film with zombies. And to add to the joyride, it’ll be in 3-D! In fact, we will be one of the first 3-D films to emerge from the UK ever.”

“…The mother of all zombie films…”
Now that’s a quote I can really sink my teeth into. It turns out the film in question is called The 4th Reich. A British production scheduled to start filming in spring next year. What we have on our hands here believe it or not is a historically accurate war film with zombies.
It turns out that Hitler’s chief scientist, Dr Joseph Mengele is charged with creating an army of invincible soldiers. This army was to known as The 4th Reich. His horrific experiments based in the concentration camps of Auschwitz, Belsen and Birkenau end up creating an evil beyond anybody could have ever imagined.
We follow a small group of soldiers led by the tough Captain Bathurst as they fight their way through wartorn France. As they venture deeper they reach an abandoned research facility where they come face to face with unspeakable evil.

Nazis are back in fashion! Well, in the movies, anyway. For a while it seemed like Second World War movies were history, but there are signs of an upsurge in this sub-genre. And we're not talking Saving Private Ryan or The Thin Red Line here. Filmmakers are suddenly taking the war not quite so seriously again. Currently Inglorious Bastards is getting bums on theatre seats and Tarantino's latest is following in the jackboot steps of Tom Cruise's thriller Valkyrie. Elsewhere on this site, you will find coverage of Iron Sky, a Second World War sci-fi comedy that is on the way from the makers of the Star Wreck series of Star Trek spoofs.
Recently we heard about another new film being conscripted into filmland's fling with WWII. Moreover, this one is taking advantage of another current fad: 3D. This new film, which is in preproduction, is a British Second...

You may not have heard of The 4th Reich yet, but soon you’ll be hearing much more along with news of the film’s director, Shaun Robert Smith.
The film, which begins production in April, is the first feature film from Smith, whose short film The Soldier displayed an excellent knack of cinematography and suspense.
It also won a small boatload of awards and gained a national theatrical release in the UK.
You can watch The Soldier here.
The short film forms a sort of foundation for The 4th Reich.
From the official synopsis for the film:

Oh, those silly Nazis and their wacky experiments, whatever new horrors of theirs will filmmakers unearth in the future? Until then, though, we’re about to be up to our eyeballs in Nazi zombies once again, this time from the UK and director Shaun Robert Smith. Based on a short film by Smith called “The Soldier”, the feature-length version will be called “The 4th Reich”, and boasts the horror power of Tom Savini and the always great Sean Pertwee (”Dog Soldiers”, “Mutant Chronicles”). Plot synopsis for the “The 4th Reich”: June 1944, after the glorious victory on D-day, the armies of the combined allied forces begin their long push to Berlin with the aim of bringing down Hitler and the despised Nazi regime of the Third Reich. But buried deep in secret files German Reichstag, is the chilling reality of Hitler’s plan to create an eternal living hell, The 4th Reich.

If you like your brains raw, wet and dripping, zombie auteur George Romero's Survival Of The Dead should be right up your alley.
In Survival, the world continues to reel from an outbreak of pesky zombies, while on a lone island, a town digs in to both fight the horrible undead plagues -- and find a cure for their own infected town members.
Needless to say, when a group of military soldiers (led by Alan Van Sprang) turns up thinking the only good zombie is a dead..er zombie, there are going to be lots and lots of problems.
Below is a making of featurette, including some good ol' zombie footage.
And If that doesn't do it for you, what about Nazi Zombies?

As the resident Dread Central zombie aficionado, I'm always on the lookout for the next flesh-tearing fright fest for you guys. Over the last couple of years the Nazi zombie sub-genre has become pretty hot. With director Shaun Robert Smith's The 4th Reich, it looks like it may have just reached its boiling point.
The film is still casting, but already Tom Savini, Sean Pertwee, Axelle Carolyn, Simon Bamford, and Craig Conway have come on board to take part in the mayhem. One of the most exciting aspects of this project is that the team intend to "nail" the historical facts by making a war movie with zombies. Shooting next spring, the entire film is set in war-torn Europe.

Looks like Tarantino isn't the only filmmaker working on grindhouse Nazi war films. Director and horror fanatic Shaun Robert Smith is in development on his next feature, The Fourth Reich, a terrifying adventure built on the Nazi human experiments during the war. Shaun's runaway success of The Soldier, his 2007 award winning short attracted some attention from producers and a multi-million dollar budget. Sean Perwee has been confirmed to star as one of the main protagonists, and special effects legend Tom Savini will make a cameo. He will play a Nazi, alongside Simon Bamford (Butterball in Hellraiser). The young director has surrounded himself with an all star team of horror genre specialists. Included are members of the special effects team of the latest Rambo film and the acclaimed director of photography, Peter Hannan, (Monty Python's Meaning of Life, Children of Men, and Withnail). One of the most anticipated horror films of...

Over the past few years, Nazis seem to be finding their way into more films then ever before, regardless of the genre. Mentions of the regime have turned up in the most unlikely of places; Kate Winslet won the Oscar for her portrayal of a Nazi in The Reader, Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlet Johansson in full dress in The Spirit, Brad Pitt and Eli Roth battling them in Quentin Tarantino’s extremely anticipated Inglorious Basterds, not to mention the Norwegian horror/comedy mash-up Dead Snow. And in a few months, director Shaun R. Smith will be unleashing his feature length Nazi zombie opus The 4th Reich on the world. But before there was the feature, there was the short: The Soldier.
A cross between 28 Days Later and Saving Private Ryan, the short was created in conjunction with the 2007 2 Days Later Short Film Competition, and in the end scooped up a number of prizes.
