Trey Edward Shults, you bleak harbinger of the inevitable. What a death grip It Comes At Night is. Constantly barebones, yet tense and suffocating. You’ve seen movies about man’s demise and societal breakdown before, but Shults asserts command through macabre manipulation. Questions will surely arise – and most likely go unanswered – but these teases are intended. Mere breaks from muttered conversations that so hopefully delay the thing that will always come. “Scares” are rarely of the conventional sense, as end-of-days banter opts to explore a collectively unknown. That discomfort you’ll feel post-credits is wholly human, and more than expected. These are common after-effects when your deepest fears have been laid in plain sight.

After Googling around the interwebs a bit, curiously researching what other critics thought about Old 37, I found out that my opinion appears to be in the minority. A lot of fans dug this homely slasher-abduction hybrid, getting lost in the legendary teaming of Kane Hodder and Bill Moseley. Hell, that’s what drew me in like a moth to a searing flame – but I got burned, unfortunately. There’s gore, and death, and evil paramedics, but a lazy story rarely remains coherent, and characters struggle to be more than crude outlines. Welcome to Horror 101, where kills rule all, and other cinematic facets are cobbled together with rusty spare parts. That bastard Alan Smithee strikes again!

Yesterday, I let you inside my head to live out your dream of being on the “Goosebumps” movie set. But because the nature of film is ephemeral, sometimes people are busy with the Work of movies and you miss them. Then sometimes the planets align and you get to talk to them later. Like when I caught up with “Goosebumps” producer Neal Moritz last week to shed more light on where the movie stands almost a year after filming wrapped. Image Credit: Sony Pictures Entertainment Hitfix Harpy: Was there a learning curve for you? “I Am Legend” and “Fast & Furious” aren’t exactly family movies. Was there anything that surprised you or you were like oh we can't do that? Neal Moritz: I think because I have a 9-year-old and a 12-year-old and I've seen so many kids movies with them that I kind of got it. I wanted...

Sporting the tag line “School’s out forever,” I walked into Varsity Blood with preconceived notions of recycled teenage slashers, and those fears were quickly answered once a few jock football players started blabbering on like a bunch of mongoloid cavemen. I was friends with some football players, and I can’t quite remember them punctuating every sentence with the word “bitch” while embodying a constant state of womanizing douchebaggery – despite there always being one or two bad eggs. Jake Helgren’s high school horror flick becomes about as generic as the lettered varsity jackets and nameless light beers tossed about an empty cabin located miles from civilization, and this is all before a masked murder shows up and we find ourselves stuck in an R-rated episode of Scooby Doo. Zoinks!
Varsity Blood starts by introducing a group of adolescent cheerleaders and football players looking for some spooky, sexy fun in celebration of Halloween.

In all fairness, director Kaare Andrews could have shown colonoscopy footage for an hour and a half and it still would have entertained viewers longer than Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever managed to – but our ambitious auteur goes above and beyond by delivering a sequel more in line with Roth’s original cult phenomenon. Sure, Rider Strong doesn’t drop in for another “explosive” cameo, but back once again is Roth’s flesh-eating virus, and this time it’s ready for the big leagues. Cabin Fever: Patient Zero is a puss-ridden, grotesque, splattery bit of biological horror, and while it lacks the indie charms that wooed franchise fans initially, Andrews’ pseudo-reboot could be the start of something nasty – rivaling Roth’s signature brand of stomach-turning visual horrors.
Since ruining a friendly vacation and eating through a prom, officials are still struggling to contain the hungry virus causing so much devastation.

The wait is over Deadites – April 5th is finally here. For some it’s been a grueling wait, sitting anxiously as every blood-soaked image and awe-inspiring trailer teased what could possibly be a savior of the current remake fad, while others sat grumpily, scoffing at even the notion that Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead could top what’s revered as one of the most famous cult-classics in horror history. If you read any of my news coverage or features regarding the film, you’d know I was one of the outspoken optimists who had no problem hiding his blatant excitement for everything Alvarez was laying down, so now the question is posed – was all the hype worth it?
Before I jump into my spiel, you all know Evil Dead isn’t supposed to be funny, right? No, not all do, because I’ve read a slew of uneducated reviews stating...

Brian Collins over at Badass Digest has written a good piece about a subject that's been troubling me lately: disappearing DVD special features. His "The Slow Death Of DVD Special Editions" identifies the recent lack of quality and depth in DVD and Blu-ray releases. And he's absolutely right when he says:
"Nowadays, beyond the occasional big ticket item like the 'Lotr' or 'Star Wars' films, you almost never see these sort of mammoth sets anymore, particularly for horror movies. Most of them don't even have actual special editions -- as terrible as it was, 'Nightmare On Elm Street' was one of the bigger hit horror films of 2010, yet its DVD only has a few deleted scenes and a generic making of along with Blu-ray exclusive features (brief interview/behind the scenes snippets). No commentary, no in-depth documentary, etc. Compare that to the special edition DVD of Platinum Dunes' equally successful...

Strictly speaking anything that presents itself as a horror (or which is marketed as one) should have one aspiration alone – to scare its audience, and I partly forgive even the messiest of all generic additions if it does that one staple thing right. It’s just a shame that the scare seems to have been filed in the “unwanted” pile these days when it comes to horror, with gimmicks taking the place of genuine, spine-tingling chills. Franchises like Saw have taken the essence of the horror film and stripped everything away until it is reduced to one simple ever-perpetuating idea – in that case a You’ve Been Framed style voyeuristic pleasure in gruesome trap deaths – and one of the men responsible has now offered a more traditionally centred horror movie in the shape of Insidious.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides; Pina; Incendies; Insidious; The Roommate; Third Star; Take Me Home Tonight
The failure of 3D TVs to make any significant inroads into the nation's front rooms ensures that even the most high-profile stereoscopic cinema outings wind up being watched in good old flatscreen at home. This doesn't much matter for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011, Disney, 12), in which the much-vaunted "real 3D" was utterly forgettable – much like the feature itself. It would have been hard for new franchise helmsman Rob Marshall to make a worse fist of things than previous incumbent Gore Verbinski, but what this belated fourth instalment lacks in outrageous awfulness it makes up for in terms of plodding mediocrity.

For critics and fans alike, Insidious infused the early spring months of this year with a jolt of adrenaline. The film marked a return to quality made horror films this year after genre fans had to suffer through lesser quality fare like Season of the Witch, The Rite, and The Roommate. Yet, it was also embraced by critics who saw it as a fitting homage to horror classics like Poltergeist and The Exorcist. As a result, the film became the most successful film of the year when comparing its box-office take with its low budget. Now, the film has creeped on to Blu-ray hoping to scare viewers the same way it did in theaters. Is it successful in doing so? . . . Keep reading.

The Film:
I don’t care what anyone says, Saw is not James Wan’s best film. Not by a long shot. It’s really well made and it has a drop-your-dick-in-the-dirt ending, but in pales in comparison to the atmospheric beauty of Dead Silence and the balls-out action seen in Death Sentence. I hope that everyone can look past his first film that that has led to six sequels and millions of dollars being deposited into the Lionsgate bank account. From a marketing point of view, I can’t blame studios from tagging their trailers with the label “From the director/creator of Saw.” I guess that’s really aimed at getting as many butts in the theaters as possible. This strategy might not change for whatever film James does after Insidious, but who cares, his latest film is exactly what the horror genre needs after being ambushed with...

I don't know what to do about The Ward. When I first heard about it, I was cautiously excited -- after all, it is a new John Carpenter movie, and anyone who knows me knows that Carpenter may well be my favorite genre film maker of all time. Of course, that was before he started slipping into mediocrity. Somewhere around the early 90's, either he stopped trying, or he failed to evolve his techniques, or he simply ran out of ideas. But Carpenter has been struggling to find his place in this modern cinematic landscape. He tried science fiction (Ghosts of Mars), and failed. He tried horror (In The Mouth Of Madness, Village Of The Damned, Vampires), and achieved middling results. He tried going back to his roots (Escape From L.A.), and assembled an utter, miserable disaster. He's had only two honestly successful efforts -- Cigarette Burns and Pro-Life, his...

One of the best horror films of the year, did not include the gimmick of 3D, nor was it a sequel or remake, and it was made for less than $2 million dollars! Insidious is considered to be one of the most profitable films of the year because it has grossed over $50 million at the box-office and cost a little more than a drop in a bucket to produce. The talented tag-team of James Wan and Leigh Whannell nailed it again with an edge-of -your -seat, old-fashioned ghost story that proves that there is still a demand for well-made original horror films (you can read my review of the film Here) . Paintball is a film shot in Spain by first time director Daniel Benmayor. Partially produced by European film company Filmax, Paintball was released on DVD in North America late in 2010. The film is amateurish early with little character development, while this horror train begins to pick up speed by the last third of the film. But will the pacing issues, lack of characterizations, and poor acting get viewers to the final act? This reviewer barely made it; yet, others will likely get off at the first available station.
Several semi-pro paintballers head out into the local mountains for a weekend of fun and simulated battle good times. Set to capture the opponents flags, this squad, led by David (Brendan Mackey) do everything wrong in the paintball rule book. Soon masks are hanging loosely around necks, characters are screaming, while few characters use cover, to protect themselves from future welts.

Set to capture the opponents flags, this squad, led by David (Brendan Mackey) do everything wrong in the paintball rule book. Soon masks are hanging loosely around necks, characters are screaming, while few characters use cover, to protect themselves from future welts.

Director: Daniel Benmayor.
Writer: Mario Schoendorff.
Paintball is a film shot in Spain by first time director Daniel Benmayor. Partially produced by European film company Filmax, Paintball was released on DVD in North America late in 2010. The film is amateurish early with little character development, while this horror train begins to pick up speed by the last third of the film. What could ever be more horrific than the loss of one’s child? That question lies at the very heart of Farmhouse, a clever, twisting and intense entry in the ever-expansive genre of horror. The film is actually branded as a psychological thriller, and while it does work well in that context, at its core it’s a horror movie through and through.
The plot revolves around a young couple, Scarlet and Chad, who attempt to leave their old life behind after losing their infant son. Through a series of non-linear flashbacks we discover that this isn’t the only reason for their (initially) unexplainable sudden departure, and that there is a much more at work here than just two grieving parents running away from heartache.
After abandoning their home and belongings they head north, bound for Seattle, but a nasty car accident in the California wine country makes short work of their escape.

Back in March, we brought you the news that writer/artist Ben Templesmith’s horror tale “Welcome to Hoxford” was picked up for big-screen adaptation by the production company of writer/director Chris Columbus. Since there haven’t been any official updates regarding the project thus far, I checked in with Templesmith to get his take on how a “Hoxford” movie would look, and who he envisions playing some of the lead roles.
“Well if it were me — and let’s be clear it’s definitely not up to me — you’d need someone who can really play with visuals and would be willing to use a lot less CGI and a lot more prosthetics/puppetry,” said Templesmith of the type of director he’d like to see on the film.
“I was heavily influenced on the creature side by the bad critters from ‘The Dark Crystal’” he continued. “But...

Now that we’ve all had a chance to see Craig Singer’s follow up to Dark Ride, the Horrorfest feature Perkins’ 14, I’m sure the prominent question in everyone’s mind is; what is he doing next? Well, I’m glad you asked!
”My partner Chris Williams and I are doing a film with Warner Brothers called Fear 101, that's the working title.” the director told Bloody Good Horror in a recent interview, ”It's really going to take the user-generated element to the next level, even moreso than "Perkins 14", and give the fans an extremely robust opportunity to kind of participate in the feature film. We're very excited about that, I always wanted to do a film with Warner Brothers, and we're just starting the process as we speak so I'm pretty psyched.”
So what the hell is it about? Presumably a school that teaches its students how to be killers,...

Last Halloween, micro-budget filmmakers Bill Taylor and Brian Mulholland set out to enter a short horror film competition. Rather than shooting one short and leaving it with that, the two teamed up with local talent from their home in Northern Ireland and created Screaming Room - a showcase of micro-budget horror shorts.
Screaming Room currently boasts a lineup of nine shorts, and is looking to expand the collection throughout 2009. Bill Taylor provided Fangoria with a copy of Horror 101, (see it above) which offers up a comedic look at several standard conventions of the horror genre. On a chilly Fall day in Chicago, over a thousand horror enthusiasts made their annual trek to the Music Box Theatre for 24-hours of blood-soaked entertainment on the big screen October 25-26. For the fourth year in a row, the Music Box is playing host to the "Massacre" - a lineup of new and classic films with special guests, memorabilia vendors, charity auctions, and a general celebration of the genre we hold so dear. I've attended all but the first event, staged by Chicago's Movieside Film Festival and curated by my good friend Rusty Nails. Movieside itself is an interesting beast that has grown from a handful of small events held at unconventional venues such as the legendary Fireside Bowl, to massive screenings at golden-era movie palaces like the Music Box, Congress, and Portage Theatres. The 'Massacre itself has spawned spin-offs as well, with a winter installment last February co-sponsored...

Chi-towners I have no idea how this slipped thru the radar. But needless to say if you live in Chicago then you should know that freaking Clive Barker and Lucky McKee are in town this Saturday night (as in This Saturday Oct 25!) as part of the Music Box Massacre. This is the fourth installment of the mass (as I like to call it) and has become a Halloween tradition for many. In addition to the screenings of May and Midnight Meat Train (which of course are followed by Q and A with the aforementioned VIPs) there’s a dynamite lineup of other screenings, dealer tables, a charity auction by event organizer Rusty Nails and also an appearance/Q &A by Joseph Zito in conjunction with a screening of Friday the 13th The Final Chapter. The whole thing is Mc’d by Aaron “Dr. AC” Christensen author of Horror 101:...
