Crikey! “Neighbours,” the famed Australian soap opera that helped launch the careers of superstars like Kylie Minogue, Margot Robbie, Russell Crowe, Chris Hemsworth, Guy Pearce, Liam Hemsworth and Natalie Imbruglia, is getting its first-ever Emmy love.
The show, which has received several nominations and wins via Australian and U.K. TV awards shows, is now a contender on this continent. As an Amazon Freevee show, “Neighbours” has been nominated for the 2024 Daytime Emmys alongside CBS’ “The Bold and the Beautiful” and “The Young and the Restless,” as well as Peacock’s “Days of Our Lives,” ABC’s “General Hospital” and Popstar! TV’s “The Bay.”
Basically, pretty much everything eligible. But how did “Neighbours” make it to eligibility for the first time on these shores? It's looking less likely with each passing day that a mass audience will be able to see Dave Green's comedy film "Coyote vs. Acme." Despite being complete, Warner Bros. infamously decided to cancel the film's release -- and delete it from existence -- just to obtain a massive tax write-off. The few Hollywood insiders who have seen "Coyote vs. Acme" have gone on the record, assuring audiences that it's good. Meanwhile, WB has reportedly received multiple offers for the film from other studios, yet has rejected each and every one of them. It seems "Coyote vs. Acme" is doomed to become yet another lost film, sacrificed on the alter of the Bottom Line. It makes one wonder how many other films have been similarly deleted.
The premise of "Coyote vs. Acme" was fun. Wile E. Coyote -- the voracious carnivore who debuted in Chuck Jones' 1949 short film "Fast and...

David McGuire, EVP of Programming & Development for Telepictures, subsidiary of Warner Bros. Television Group, is exiting after more than 30 years with the company.
McGuire’s departure is the result of restructuring following Mike Darnell’s departure as Warner Bros. Unscripted Television President.
In his current position, McGuire oversaw all aspects of creative affairs for first-run syndicated series, unscripted series, and digital content developed and produced by Telepictures.
Credited as one of the key architects behind The Ellen DeGeneres Show, McGuire most recently oversaw the launch of The Jennifer Hudson Show. The People’s Choice– and Daytime Emmy–nominated series ranked as the #1 new first-run strip of the 2022–23 season in average weekly reach.
McGuire also forged key partnerships with advertisers for Telepictures’ integration business.
Together with DeGeneres, McGuire helped build The Ellen DeGeneres Show into an Emmy-winning afternoon staple and global brand by combining the strength of traditional media with the emerging power of digital platforms.

The verdict is in: Syndicated court staples “Judge Mathis” and “The People’s Court” will both end their run at the end of this season, Variety has confirmed. “Judge Mathis” will wrap after 24 seasons, while this most recent iteration of “The People’s Court” wraps after its 26th season. Season 24 and Season 26, respectively.
Both shows come from Warner Bros. Unscripted Television in association with Telepictures Productions and are distributed by Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution. According to insiders, the decision was made due to the declining nature of the daytime syndication landscape. As local TV stations shrink their syndication dollars and the advertising marketplace shrinks for daytime syndication, first-run syndication has become a trickier landscape. At the same time, station groups have been expanding their local news broadcasts, also in a bid to save money.
“Judge Mathis” also comes from And Syndicated Productions, while “The People’s Court” is a Ralph Edwards/Stu Billett Production.

O’Brien founded Mighty Oak Entertainment, a television production and distribution company in 2005, and the following year sold his first series, Whacked Out Sports, to NBC owned and operated stations.
The NBC Network included the all-barter show on the prime time feed following NFL Sunday Night Football. After an initial 22 episode order, Whacked Out Sports, a comic collection of sports-related video clips featuring mishaps and crashes, grew into a collection of six original television series airing in domestic syndication, cable and international television. Actress-comedian-author Jackie Guerra has been meeting with top-level producers around town discussing a daytime talk show, sources said.
Guerra would host the project, being discussed as a possible syndicated show, sources said. Latino talent has become a big part of syndication as multiple talk show pilots this past development season featured Latina hosts, and courts shows including The People's Court, Judge Maria Lopez, Judge Alex and Cristina's Court feature Latino judges.
Guerra's reps at Rebel Entertainment Partners and Brillstein-Grey are tight-lipped about the discussions and declined comment, but Guerra is no stranger to daytime as she has made a number of appearances on The Tyra Banks Show to discuss topics including her recent weight loss; she also was developing a daytime talk show with Dick Clark Prods. in the late 1990s.
Guerra is the author of books including "Under Construction: How I've Gained and Lost Millions of Dollars and Hundreds of Pounds" and hosts a show on Air America called Workin' It. As an actress, her credits include PBS' drama series American Family, WB Network's comedy series First Time Out and the feature film Selena.

Judge Judy marked its 500th week as the No. 1 half-hour court show in syndication during the seven-day frame ending April 16. The show was off a slight 2% from the previous week to average a 4.5 household rating, according to Nielsen Media Research. Meanwhile, fellow court strip People's Court (2.8) had somewhat of a milestone of its own. The show managed to tie for second place in the genre with Judge Joe Brown for the first time this season, with People's flat week-to-week and Joe Brown down 7%.

Could there be a new judge hitting the gavel in syndication? Sources say Maria Lopez, a former Massachusetts Superior Court judge, is making the rounds of major syndie distributors this week after receiving some overtures about presiding over her own TV courtroom. The Cuban-born Lopez has been described as having a no-nonsense approach to her work. Court shows are an enduring genre in syndication, and Hispanic judges now are starting to make their mark: Marilyn Milian presides over Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution's The People's Court, and Alex Ferrer is the featured jurist on Twentieth Television's upcoming Judge Alex, set to launch in the fall. Lopez is repped by Rebel Entertainment Partners and attorney George Tobia at Burns & Levinson.

Syndicated shows were in the doldrums for the week ended Aug. 8 as most were in repeats and fewer viewers were watching television from the previous frame. Court shows exhibited some improvement during the week, which saw HUT (households using television) levels drop by an average of 387,000 households from the previous week, according to Nielsen Media Research figures. Judge Judy averaged a 4.5 household rating, up 7% week-to-week, while Judge Joe Brown was flat at a 3.4. Divorce Court (2.6) was up 4%, Judge Mathis (2.4) was up 9%, and People's Court (2.4) was flat. The entertainment magazine strips also saw some improvement week-to-week, with Entertainment Tonight posting a 4.5, up 5%. Inside Edition was up 3% to a 3.2, Extra was up 5% to a 2.2, and Access Hollywood fell 5% to a 2.1. Celebrity Justice was down 17% to a 1.0.

By locking in a key New York time slot on WABC, Buena Vista Television has apparently found a final answer to a potentially terminal clearance crisis that threatened its syndicated version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. The show had been facing the new season with no time slot set in the country's top market. Now BVT has cleared New York for a highly visible 12:30 p.m. slot and has also secured key slots on four other top-market ABC owned-and-operated stations. BVT and ABC are owned by the Walt Disney Co. Millionaire had lost its place on WCBS in the country's top market when the CBS flagship station opted to replace it with The People's Court at 4 p.m., prompting speculation that Millionaire's future was in doubt (HR 4/3).
Toronto -- Canadian broadcaster Craig Media has announced a 2003-04 TV schedule dominated by U.S. celebrity talk shows by day and homegrown fare and Hollywood movies in primetime. Craig, which spent modestly at the Los Angeles Screenings last month, unveiled to advertisers Tuesday in Toronto a daytime lineup that features two new Warner Bros. talk shows -- one hosted by Ellen DeGeneres and the other by Sharon Osbourne -- and Buena Vista Television's The Wayne Brady Show. The Calgary, Alberta-based broadcaster also picked up King World's daytime series Living It Up! With Ali & Jack and the Warner Bros. reality-based legal series Celebrity Justice and The People's Court.
The syndicated version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire has lost its prized 4 p.m. slot on WCBS in New York, the country's top market. The CBS flagship is replacing it next season with Warner Bros. Domestic Television's The People's Court, which has been doing muscle ratings for rival WNBC. Analysts say the New York decision for Buena Vista Television's high-profile syndicated version of Millionaire, hosted by Meredith Vieira, could turn out to be "critical" for the show in the long term. "It's likely to get a lesser clearance in New York, which will impact the overall number and thus will impact its long-term viability," one observer said. Sources said that BVT executives are looking to persuade WCBS to deprive King World's Hollywood Squares of its primetime access slot at 7:30 p.m. next season and replace it with Millionaire. A spokeswoman for BVT declined comment on the reported battle in New York for the golden time slot, but a spokesman for King World said, "We have a contract with the CBS station to carry 'Squares' at 7:30 p.m. through the 2003-04 season."...
