This weekend sees the release of the fifth film in WB/Legendary’s MonsterVerse saga, Godzilla x Kong: The New Era. These films have attempted to somewhat reinvent the traditional Kaiju film for Western audiences, with our mighty monster heroes being called Titans. While the franchise arguably stumbled out of the gate with Gareth Edwards’ coolly received Godzilla, the saga has steadily grown in popularity, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is looking like a big hit. But how do the films stack up against each other? Let’s take a look with our MonsterVerse Movies Ranked List!
Godzilla:
Audiences were pretty hyped for Gareth Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla reboot, with awesome early trailers that used Ligeti’s Requiem II from 2001: A Space Odyssey, promising the most intense Kaiju movie to date. It didn’t really work out that way, with many complaining about how dull the film was,...

While it may have followed Seinfeld as Larry David's second major TV series, Curb Your Enthusiasm has the most unique voice of any TV series of the modern era.
While set almost entirely in Los Angeles, Curb has a very New York-centric and Jewish sensibility. And at the center of it all is Larry David, playing a probably-not-that-exaggerated version of himself.
The show started in October of 1999 as a one-off HBO special, meant to depict the return to stand-up comedy of Larry David, best known at that point as the co-creator of Seinfeld.
He was playing a version of Larry, who is independently wealthy yet seemingly never far from a confrontation about something small.
It soon became a surprisingly long-running comedy series, as its final season launched in February of 2024, nearly 25 years after that special.

Tales of musicians who sold their soul for fame are common enough, Crossroads, Trick or Treat, Dark Roads 79 and The 27 Club are just a few examples. The Devil Went Down to Islington is a little different, however. It tells the tale of a music teacher who makes a Faustian bargain while drunk, only to panic when he realizes what he’s done.
It actually opens like a bizarre action film with Father Crowley using switchblade crosses to fight a pair of masked figures who are attacking a panicked man. He defeats them, but in the end Satan claims another soul.
John Robertson Has had a morning from hell, and he hasn’t even sold his soul yet. He fails to save his cat from the garbage truck, then an Ofsted inspector shows up,...

The 1986 rock ‘n roll horror film Trick or Treat, one of my all-time favorite movies, is getting a Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release (and possibly a new DVD release) from Synapse Films. We’re still waiting to hear a release date for that, as obviously the company wasn’t able to meet the hoped-for October release window – but while we wait for the special physical media release, Trick or Treat is set to making its streaming debut on the Screambox service this Friday, October 27th! Just in time for Halloween viewing!

When I was a younger man, I used to love movie novelizations. These paperbacks would often add context to films, create whole new scenes, and give you a unique glimpse into the world of a movie that you might not get from watching alone. It was special. The movie novelization seems to be a dying art form these days, which is a shame. While they still exist, they don't seem as prevalent as they once were. Thankfully, we still have the classics. One such classic novelization is Curtis Richards' take on John Carpenter's "Halloween."
Published by Bantam Books in 1979, the novelization wasn't just a standard adaptation of Carpenter and Debra Hill's now-iconic script — it also added entirely new material, like a flashback that provides some background about the curse of Samhain, some stuff about cults, and more time with serial killer Michael Myers during his asylum days. Michael's...

“And Just Like That…” star Sara Ramírez has addressed a magazine profile written about her that could be read as an attempt to use humor to take down the actor and their character on the Max show.
In the June 2023 piece by The Cut, writer Brock Colyar draws parallels between their “And Just Like That…” character Che Diaz and Ramírez that the actor doesn’t agree with.
“I am a human being, an artist, an actor,” Ramírez said in a Tuesday post to Instagram. “And we are living in a world that has become increasingly hostile toward anyone who dares to free themselves from the gender binary, or disrupt the mainstream.”
The Cut story also mentions Ramírez’s theory that perhaps the show’s team “was just being cheeky and trolling us all about how self-serious we get over the politics of representation on a fizzy sitcom.”

“And Just Like That” is back on Max for a second season, and it’s bringing some famous — and familiar — faces.
Kim Cattrall confirmed that she will reprise her role of Samantha Jones in an on-camera cameo. Her character communicated with Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) via text message throughout the first season, including Mr. Big’s funeral and the Paris finale.
A slim and trim John Corbett will return as Carrie’s former fiance Aidan Shaw as she moves on from the death of her husband.
“Sex and the City” fans will also be thrilled that Candice Bergen will reprise her role as Carrie’s former editor Enid Frick. Julie Halston will also be back as socialite Bitsy Von Muffling, who is as delightful as her name.
Of course, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon are back as Charlotte York Goldenblatt and Miranda Hobbes, Carrie’s longtime BFFs.

Rock ‘n’ roll and horror: a match made in hell! From electrifying riffs to spine-chilling screams, these heavy metal mashups create a headbanging, heart-pounding experience that resonates with rebels and thrill-seekers alike. Whether you’re a fan of rebellious music or cinema of the fringe, nearly everyone can agree they go together like peanut butter and jelly.
What makes them such perfect partners? Perhaps it’s their shared love for the dark, the dangerous, and the fantastical. Rock ‘n’ roll has always been the music of outcasts, and horror dares to delve into our deepest fears. Together, they create a symphony of shock that thrills and chills.
From demonic deals to killer concerts, rock ‘n’ roll horror movies explore the intersection of music and mayhem. They’re films that rock, scare, and leave us begging for an encore.
So grab your leather jacket, tune your air guitar, and turn up the volume.

Sara Ramirez doesn’t know what it’s like to have a pilot based on their life, but the And Just Like That star knows someone who does.
“When [the And Just Like That writers] wrote this, I was like, ‘Ok, this sounds like that thing that happened to that person that I knew,'” Ramirez, who plays Che Diaz, the Max series’ resident nonbinary, straight-shooter comedian and podcaster, told The Hollywood Reporter about their character’s early season two arc. (The interview was conducted before the July 13 SAG-AFTRA strike). “They were hired by a certain network to do a sitcom of their life, and interestingly enough, they had very similar experiences. Not the same as Che, but similar in that they were being projected on to.”

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for “And Just Like That” Season 2, through Episode 5, “Trick or Treat.”]
When “And Just Like That…” premiered, it got to the point, fast. Big (Chris Noth) was dead before the end of the first hour, and Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) was alone again, with only her untold millions to comfort her. Killing off a key character or two is a standard practice when it comes to revivals, implemented in everything from “Night Court” to “Will & Grace,” but “And Just Like That…” made Big’s death the series’ center. The first season was clearly about Carrie grieving her loss, finding a fresh path, and walking into that uncertain future.
When it comes to similar purpose, all Season 2 can muster is uncertainty. At times, it feels like an extension of Season 1 — aka, it’s still all about Big, or, at least, it’s still all about Carrie grieving and finding her way forward.

Note: This story contains spoilers from “And Just Like That” Season 2, Episode 5.
The biggest moment in “And Just Like That” Episode 5, titled “Trick or Treat,” has to do with a focus group. As Che (Sara Ramirez) sat on the other side of a one-way glass mirror and heard feedback on their upcoming sitcom, the comedian agreed with several of the notes. It’s only when another nonbinary person from Brooklyn calls Che a “walking Boomer joke” that their face falls.
It’s a scene that should be familiar to any fan of the Max comedy series, especially if they happened to be part of the Che-hating Twitter discourse from last year.
“Season 2 of ‘And Just Like That’ — in regards to Che — has to start with the reaction to what Season 1 of Che was, which was judging a book by the cover,” series developer and executive producer Michael Patrick King told TheWrap.

Franchise fatigue is here to stay and doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. In recent weeks, Transformers, Indiana Jones, Fast and Furious, DC, and Disney’s live-action remakes have all been derailed in different ways. Seen as the safest of bets in all of Hollywood even before the pandemic, reboots and sequels were all the rage but audiences’ appetites are changing, and, as such, many of the “top guns” are floundering. That sly pun was intentional, of course, for there is one franchise, bar last summer’s juggernaut of aerobatic wonder, which is perhaps the only one that shows no sign of slowing down – and that’s the Other one led by one Tom Cruise. And for good reason.
The predecessor to the new adventure, Mission: Impossible – Fallout was both the biggest and the most acclaimed (there aren’t many who don’t consider it the best) so why stop there?...

Last week, we heard the awesome news that the 1986 rock ‘n roll horror film Trick or Treat, one of my all-time favorite movies, is getting a Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release (and possibly a new DVD release) from Synapse Films. A specific date for this release has not yet been announced, just that they’re hoping to get it out into the world by the end of 2023 – and ideally, of course, it would be out in October. Synapse Films is collaborating with Michael Felsher of Red Shirt Pictures on this release, and now Felsher has revealed some details to Rue Morgue, confirming that we can expect to see a documentary, a commentary, and interviews on the disc.
Directed by Charles Martin Smith from a screenplay by Rhet Topham, Joel Soisson, and Michael S. Murphey (with an uncredited polish from the Final Destination duo of James Wong and Glen Morgan), Trick or Treat...

The 1986 rock ‘n roll horror film Trick or Treat is one of my all-time favorites, but since the VHS era it has only gotten a barebones DVD release (which is available for a high price Here) and a Blu-ray in Germany. So this ranks high as some of the coolest news I’ve seen lately: Synapse Films is putting together a Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release (and possibly a new DVD release) of Trick or Treat that they’re hoping to send out into the world by the end of 2023!
Full details on the release aren’t available at this time, as they’re too early in the process, but Synapse Films is collaborating with Michael Felsher of Red Shirt Pictures to make sure it’s the best it can be. The livestream announcement can be viewed on Facebook.

Ozzy Osbourne, the Godfather of Metal, may be most famous for his legendary contributions to the music genre, but the Prince of Darkness has also acted in a handful of movies. He's far from the first rock star to do so, but his choice of roles prove his sense of humor and knack for camp. Folks may recognize him from his cameos in comedies like "Austin Powers in Goldmember" and "Little Nicky," or voice cameos in "Gnomeo & Juliet" and "Trolls 2: World Tour," but earlier on he appeared in the lesser-known 1986 heavy metal horror film "Trick or Treat."
Not to be confused with the 2007 Halloween-themed anthology "Trick 'r Treat," "Trick or Treat" is a tongue-in-cheek relic of a time when conservative commentators were denouncing metal music as a serious threat to the public order. Linda Cardellini has shared her reaction to finding out that Velma is a lesbian in the new Scooby-Doo film.
The actor has portrayed the character on two occasions: in the 2002 live adaptation film, and its sequel, Monsters Unleashed, two years later.
Last month, the release of the latest iteration of the Scooby-Doo universe Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! canonised Velma as having an attraction to women – something that had long been suggested, but has never been addressed directly as part of her story.
As arguably the most recognisable representation of Velma so far, Cardellini was asked to weigh in on the development of the character in an interview released on Thursday (10 November).
After expressing her delight that the character was still so prominent in culture, the Dead to Me star added that she thought it was “great” for Velma’s sexuality to finally be acknowledged in a major way.

TV has a slew of fun programming to get viewers into the spooky spirit on Monday, October 31 — better known as Halloween 2022. The schedules feature Halloween episodes from classic sitcoms spanning decades back to more recent offerings. If you prefer to laugh your way through spooky season, don’t miss these episodes. Start fright and early with six festive installments of Bewitched, starting at 10/9c on Fetv. One standout: 1965’s “Trick or Treat,” in which Darrin (Dick York) is transformed into a werewolf by his mischievous mother-in-law, who casts the spell while taking the form of a child (a pre-Brady Bunch Maureen McCormick!). Meanwhile, author and innkeeper Dick Loudon’s (Bob Newhart) eccentric Vermont neighbors fear they’re being invaded by aliens in a memorable 1987 edition of Newhart, starting at 4:30/3:30c on Decades. There’s plenty of toil and trouble in primetime with the Sabrina, The Teenage Witch–O-Ween Marathon,...

Although the 80-page giants generally have been pretty good, especially the wave of books we had celebrating various character anniversaries, DC of late have struggled a little with the anthology books. I should say it’s not just DC, but as once upon a time they were the masters of the format it is most noticeable with them. The mix of creative teams isn’t the issue either. A blend of known names and up-and-comers was always the way DC’s mystery books operated, and it served them very well. What drew me to this book the most was Paul Levitz writing Phantom Stranger (that alone is worth the entrance price), and Tom Mandrake and Kelley Jones illustrating two tales. Let’s hope the other stories can add some scary fun as well.

The Point Horror line made every day feel like Halloween, but the Scholastic series had only a few books specifically set around the October holiday. The first of these seasonal offerings, Richie Tankersley Cusick’s 1989 book Trick or Treat, centers around a teenager who’s deathly afraid of her own home. As everyone else around her is doubtful of her misgivings and claims, or they’re simply too unavailable to help, the main character counts down the days until something inevitably dreadful happens on Halloween.

Note: The following review contains spoilers for Halloween Ends.
This time last year, while doing press for his rather dreadful Halloween Kills, director David Gordon Green promised the final installment of this rebooted trilogy would tackle both “the pandemic and peculiar politics.” Well: a year later, with Halloween Ends now upon us, this writer can say that we don’t in fact have a single acknowledgment of Covid or some dramatization of the town of Haddonfield, Illinois, struck by QAnon fever. Perhaps representative (should you take Green’s initial statement at face value) of how this supposed franchise-capper reeks of an insecure creative team tussling over ideas and themes, it can be said Green’s misfire might at least keep you guessing what the hell it’s actually trying to do for a good portion of the runtime.

I’ll confess. I have a real mushy soft spot for Heavy Metal music. Back in the ‘80s, in my teen years, my buddy Nick and I would crank the latest from Kiss, Scorpions, Judas Priest, Cinderella, etc. And there’s something specifically about Metal tailored to teenagers – that heightened sense of drama we feel at that age, the hormonal urges, and the need to push back against ‘society’. (Right – but please give us our allowances to consume products, okay?)
But Metal also equated with power, which was aligned with evil, and before long, many parents came up with the notion that Metal was Satan’s music. (Is the Pmrc still a thing? Brr.) Well, marketing is marketing, and few Metal bands fought the label (hell, some even embraced it). So it seemed the timing was right for that satanic safe haven, the Horror Film, to meet up with the...

Like a lot of folks, my movie watching is heading more towards a digital future rather than a physical one – and that’s despite my love of Blu-ray and all the cult movies the format has brought us thanks to the likes of Olive Films, Kino Lorber/Scorpion Releasing, Scream Factory, Vinegar Syndrome et al.
Whilst many will decry abandoning discs for digital files there are some bonuses, especially for genre fans here in the UK. The advent of iTunes has brought with it, in a lot of cases, a dropping of the borders. Movies are hitting Apple’s stores that haven’t seen the light of day since the VHS era – there’s even some films available digitally that have never previously been made available to rent or buy on these shores. Ever.
With that in mind, I’ve been trawling iTunes to find some hidden gems, the real...

I’ve always seen Christmas and New Year’s as the one-two punch of all holidays. All the prep that goes into Christmas to culminate in just one brief and fleeting day, and then being immediately followed by the end of the year. That year that has etched its last two digits into our subconscious, and dies hard when trying to learn to write or type the new two digits for the following year. New Year’s is also a time when you can add one more year to how long it’s been since you passed some of life’s memorable and major rites of passage, like high school or college graduation, or even how long ago your favorite films came out.
It can be a bit melancholy if you let it. One thing that is definitely a high point of all this closure...
