Actor and recent Oscar-winner Robert Downey Jr. is known for his decade-long role as Iron Man in the MCU. The actor laid the foundations for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, alongside director Jon Favreau and producer Kevin Feige. The film is largely credited with having changed how superhero films were perceived in Hollywood.
Downey Jr.’s off-screen persona often includes a self-aware yet inflated sense of ego. However, even he set it aside to name James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy as the best film in the franchise. The Oppenheimer star mentioned how he was surprised by how great the film was, with relatively unknown characters, and ended up being so important for the MCU.

The screenplay to the 2014 mega-hit "Guardians of the Galaxy," the 10th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was credited to director James Gunn and longtime Hollywood screenwriter Nicole Perlman. Perlman also has story credits on the films "Captain Marvel" and "Pokémon Detective Pikachu," and has previously been attached to a sequel to the 1986 Jim Henson film "Labyrinth," as well as film adaptations of the 1980s toy properties "Visionaries" and "M.A.S.K."
Perlman, according to an old article on the Marvel website, was recruited into the Marvel writing room way back in 2009 and was offered the opportunity to write a spec script for a "lesser" Marvel property as a test of her style and working capabilities. She selected "Guardians of the Galaxy," a Marvel title that had been rebooted by authors Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning the year before. Perlman said to her interviewer that this was a common...

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" ended with a new team of Guardians led by Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper). One of their number was Phyla (Kai Zen), a young white-haired girl and freed test subject of evil geneticist the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji).
If you're a comics fan, then yes, you likely realized that this was indeed the Marvel Cinematic Universe incarnation of the hero Phyla-Vell. If you only watch the movies, you're still thinking (to quote Korath the Pursuer), "Who?!" Well, let me explain.
In the comics, Phyla is the daughter of Captain Marvel — the alien warrior Mar-Vell, not Carol Danvers. Annette Benning played a female version of Mar-Vell in 2019's "Captain Marvel," but the character is traditionally male. Mar-Vell and his progeny are Kree, the imperious race to which "Guardians of the Galaxy" villain Ronan The Accuser (Lee Pace) belonged. The Kree have both blue and pink-shaded skin...

The "Guardians of the Galaxy" trilogy has concluded, and though we're going to see more of Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) at least, the Guardians team as we know them have finished their on-screen adventures. Though they've added members like Kraglin (Sean Gunn), Mantis (Pom Klementieff), and Nebula (Karen Gillan) over the films, the original group consisted of Star-Lord, Gamora (Zoe Sandaña), Groot (voice of Vin Diesel), Drax (Dave Bautista), and Rocket (voice of Bradley Cooper). The ragtag team of unlikely heroes could have had other members in their makeup, according to writer/director James Gunn (via ComicBook.com). One of those characters is Bug.
Haven't heard of Bug? Don't worry. While he was a part of the 2008 "Guardians" comic run by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning, he wasn't exactly a well-known member. That said, there was a time when Bug was actually in a draft of the script. Let's take a look at Bug,...

We have arrived at the 32nd MCU movie and the end of a trilogy started in 2014 by the filmmaker James Gunn, called Guardians of the Galaxy, based on the comic book series created by Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning. The Marvel franchise has generated several debates about quantity vs. quality in the last few years, but the truth is that the vast majority of its projects continue to be well-received by general audiences and critics alike. That said, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is one of the most anticipated movies of this new saga and might actually revitalize the enthusiasm of most fans who have been disappointed with the latest MCU installments. For me personally, it has further strengthened my passion for this cinematic universe. // Continue Reading ›...

The "Guardians of the Galaxy" franchise has introduced plenty of colorful characters over the past decade, from a talking raccoon named Rocket, to a sentient tree named Groot, to the antennae-sporting alien, Mantis. Yet few new additions have been as instantaneously accepted as friend-shaped like Cosmo, the adorable space dog voiced by Maria Bakalova in "The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special." So far, we've only gotten a bit of screen time with Cosmo, but we know that she's telekinetic, loves Kevin Bacon, took a liking to Sean Gunn's Kraglin, and is, in the parlance of dog owners, "food motivated."
Cosmo also wears a pretty distinctive outfit: she's decked out in an old-fashioned spacesuit that's a bit like the kind astronauts wore during the Space Race. It features a patch that says Cccp and a rust red collar opening that could connect to a helmet — complete with what looks like a tiny sensor antenna.

Groot appears in different forms in every "Guardians of the Galaxy" movie, but whether he's baby-sized or 10 feet tall, Marvel fans probably know his key characteristics: he's an anthropomorphic humanoid tree, best friends with Rocket Raccoon, and can only say "I am Groot." However, the original Groot was quite a different beast (and had a much larger vocabulary).
Groot's comic debut was "Tales to Astonish" #13, published in 1960. This means he predates every modern Marvel hero barring Captain America and Namor the Sub-Mariner — only he wasn't a hero at first. Co-created by Jack Kirby, Stan Lee and his brother Larry Lieber, the original Groot was a malicious alien invader.
"I Challenged Groot, the Monster from Planet X!" was the eight-page chapter 1 of a four-chapter issue. This means Groot got to be on the cover; his cover appearance was brown in the original coloring, but grey in the modern recolor despite the...

In the vast tapestry that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe, James Gunn's "Guardians of the Galaxy" movies — based on the comics by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning — filled the role of "quirky outsiders." This is a gargantuan feat, given the number of gods, aliens, monsters, and other extraordinary beings found throughout the series. The team consisted of a single human being, Peter (Chris Pratt) who was abducted by a UFO as a child, and had eventually fallen into a family-like relationship with a team of mutants and alien warriors. There was Rocket Raccoon (voice of Bradley Cooper), a talking tree named Groot (Vin Diesel), a deadly assassin named Gamora (Zoe Saldaña), her mostly-mechanical sister Nebula (Karen Gillen), a literal-minded bruiser named Drax (Dave Bautista), and the gentle psychic Mantis (Pom Klementieff).

After almost a decade of action-filled mayhem, sparkling absurdist humour and interstellar shenanigans, time has finally come to bid farewell to one of the MCU’s most loved off-shoots. Back again with James Gun at the helm, the third and final chapter of what is admittedly, the most anarchic sibling in the great MCU family, Guardians of The Galaxy Volume 3 delivers more gags, a killer new soundtrack and an interestingly timed F bomb.
The latest instalment also sees the return of Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan and Pom Klementieff. In addition, there are a number of hugely exciting cameos throughout from the likes of Nathan Fillion, Sylvester Stallone and many more.

The whole thing felt like a glorious fluke from the get-go. Never mind all those top-tier, name-recognized Marvel superheroes that were being trotted out in the name of establishing a multimedia, cross-branded empire. Let’s spend a lot of money on an obscure late ’60s comic-book title, using characters from its 2008 reboot run, and make that a franchise. We’ll give it to the guy who used to make Troma films. Cast the Parks & Rec doofus as the lead. It’ll be perfect for filling time between Avengers movies.

James Gunn's "Guardians of the Galaxy" films (as well as the accompanying "Holiday Special") have greatly expanded the narrative possibilities of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Audiences have been treated to countless characters, creatures, and worlds, all of which have been delivered with Gunn's signature combination of imagination and wit. Of course, as wild and fresh as the cosmic elements of the MCU are, there's been no shortage of heart. Gunn was given the unenviable task of making us care about a cadre of characters including a sentient tree and a foul-mouthed raccoon and pulled it off with flying colors. With the writer and director moving over to lead DC Studios, fans can't help but wonder about the future of the Guardians of the Galaxy and their unique place in the MCU.

Marvel dropped its second-ever Marvel Studios Special Presentation this week, and while "The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special" packs a lot of fun into its short runtime, the latest one-off is not exactly a standalone story like "Werewolf at Night." In fact, the holiday special actually includes a surprising amount of connective tissue between "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" (and the other films the Guardians have appeared in during the five-year span since) and the upcoming third and final installment of James Gunn's trilogy.
The new Disney+ special follows Drax (Dave Bautista) and Mantis (Pom Klementieff) on a side quest to get Peter Quill, a.k.a. Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), an unexpected Christmas present, but it also gives Guardians fans plenty of updates on what the crew's been doing since we last saw them. Warning: Spoilers for "The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special" ahead.
The Guardians of the Galaxy are back! Well, most of them. A couple of them died (if you can call having your soul trapped inside a rock for the rest of eternity "death") and the rest haven't really been gone for long because they showed up in "Thor: Love and Thunder" but, hey! They're back! And just in time for Christmas! Written and directed by James Gunn, "The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special" sees the Marvel Cinematic Universe's loveable band of violent criminals unite to find the perfect Christmas present for Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), aka Star Lord.
Why are they so hellbent on Christmas, you ask? Well, the aforementioned deaths, along with the ending of "Avengers: Infinity War," left the Guardian's mostly fearless leader in a state of severe emotional duress. In the gentlest terms possible, the...

There’s a new (furry) fan-favorite in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and there are no “bones” about it. The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special puts Cosmo the Spacedog where she belongs in the world’s highest-grossing franchise. It’s true that this four-legged friend made their debut all the way back in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, but with a bit of a revamp, she’s poised to have a significant role in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and beyond.
Although Cosmo is canonically male in Marvel Comics, she was mistakenly misgendered by Howard the Duck (then voiced by Seth Green) when she licked the face of The Collector (Benicio del Toro) in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Gunn has made Cosmo female in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, where she’s voiced by Borat 2’s Maria Bakalova. Her appearance doesn...

"Werewolf By Night" has arrived on Disney+ just in time for the spooky season and luckily, it rules/ The Marvel special stars Gael Garcia Bernal as Jack Russell, a man who transforms into the titular beast under the light of the full moon. Other notable Marvel characters appearing in the special are Elsa Bloodstone (Laura Donnelly) and Ted Sallis (Carey Jones), aka Man-Thing — who looks amazing by the way. The special is a bold swing for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, something that has felt increasingly rare as of late, and director/composer Michael Giacchino has brought this formerly unexplored corner of Marvel Comics to brilliant life.

About The Punisher Movies
Frank Castle, also known as “The Punisher,” is a vigilante who operates outside the law to punish criminals. He is a skilled fighter and marksman and has access to a wide range of weaponry.
His methods are brutal, and he is not afraid to kill his enemies; however, he is not without mercy and will sometimes spare those he believes deserve a second chance.

In what appears to be a Phase 4 tradition in the MCU thus far, The Guardians of the Galaxy are the latest characters to receive comic accurate costumes.
“Marvel Studios’ rag-tag band of misfit heroes are getting new comics-accurate costumes in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The photos, shared by Just Jared, feature Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill/Star-Lord and Karen Gillan’s Nebula sporting suits highly evocative of the Guardians’ look in the mid-2000s Annihilation: Conquest, which spawned the modern-day relaunch of the Guardians of the Galaxy in 2008 by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning. Also spotted in the pics are a few new alien characters.”

For most fans, the Guardians of the Galaxy consist of five to eight members. There’s the main team of Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot, and sometimes Yondu, Nebula, and Mantis. But comic fans have been waiting for another player to be added to the team, one who has been teased in both of the Guardians movies. Cosmo the Spacedog was seen briefly in the Collector’s cell in the first movie before joining Howard the Duck for the post-credit sequence. He was initially intended to be in Avengers: Infinity War but was cut for time, leaving a brief shot in the Guardians Vol. 2 credits as his last appearance.
But a recent Twitter post by director James Gunn gives fans hope for something more. Earlier today, Gunn posted photos of a wrap gift he received from members of the crew. The photo shows eight holiday ornaments, each displaying a Guardian.

Being a fan of 1940’s heroes and characters, I’ve loved the Project Superpowers books since they first appeared. It didn’t hurt having Alex Ross on board of course, as a designer/ plotter and cover artist. He makes anything look good. What Dynamite did was take a whole load of now public domain characters, many of whom had very brief moments in the Sun a long time ago, and give them a bit of spit and polish. They took their greatest weaknesses, their old values and out of date look, and actually made that the driving force of the books. How would these characters act today? would they still be heroes? Would they like what we’ve become? A lot of water has gone under the bridge since the book’s launch in 2008, but this new storyline still,...

This week I will be taking an indepth look at two items I will soon be listing for sale. Both listings play into the topic of speculation, but in very different ways. I will look at what makes these comics desirable from a comics point of view and any movie tie-ins. Then I will break down the grade I have given each comic and the debate potential listing prices.
First up is Suicide Squad #2 from 1987. I brought this off eBay way back in February. Originally I was looking at an #1 for £5, which eventually went for £15. It would have still been a tidy profit come the new movies release. I picked up #2 for just 92p plus £2.93 P+P. So the challenge of making a profit off of a second issue proved to good to turn down. So what are this issues key selling points?
Comics Info: Writer: John Ostrander | Pencils: Luke McDonnell| Inks: Karl Kesel.

Reaction around the virtual office water cooler mid-pandemic when DC’s winter crossover, Endless Winter, was announced was guarded excitement, along with the occasional wry “Oh you mean March?” Turns out, it wasn’t that far off, according to co-writer Ron Marz.

Endless Winter is a nine part crossover that runs through two bookend issues, three specials, and the regular issues of Flash, Aquaman, and Justice League in December. Marz (Green Lantern) and Andy Lanning (Legion Lost) are co-writing, with art on each chapter from Marco Santucci (Shazam) along with another artist on each individual book.

In this exclusive preview, the secret cabal ruling the universe decides on Krypton's fate.
I know we've talked about it before, but the best part of the Unity Saga, Brian Michael Bendis and team's first big Superman story (that really started back in Man of Steel but who's nitpicking), is how it's knitting together DC's big, weird, crazy space stuff. Something I've found really surprising since DC Universe hugely expanded its comic offerings was how vibrant the galaxy felt even 20 years ago - The Omega Men weren't always the fun-loving White Lantern-beheading space terrorists we know and love. Turns out they were part of a much larger and continually published comics ecosystem for a long time. An ecosystem that coexisted alongside the street level Batman books and the primary colors Superman/Wonder Woman stuff, and wove in and out of Justice League books.
But something happened...

So far, the McU has explored a number of the different corners of the Marvel comics universe, from the street-level, to the cosmic, to the magical. One area that’s a key part of the source material that’s short on supply in the franchise, however, is the supernatural side of things. But this could be set to change in the next few years, if our intel’s correct.
We Got This Covered has been informed that Marvel has plans to do something with Elsa Bloodstone in the McU. The character isn’t a huge fan favorite, so she might seem like a strange choice to adapt, but she could prove the key to unlocking the more occult side of the universe. From what we understand, the studio has yet to decide whether to give her a movie or a Disney Plus TV series, but she’s definitely going to...

Detective Comics #1004 reveals a very different origin for Batman villain, the Arkham Knight.
You would be forgiven for throwing a little eye roll at Detective Comics when you heard that the main Batman villain of the latest arc would be the Arkham Knight. After all, very rarely do ideas that start in other mediums translate all that well to comics. Also, the Arkham Knight is...already spoken for in main DC continuity..
You would be forgiven for it, but you would also be wrong for doing so. First, as we’ve discussed several times before, DC’s track record on comics adaptations is shockingly good. The various Injustice books have been fun, while the Mortal Kombat lead in books have been worthwhile additions to the series and the Arkham Knight adaptation book was high quality. Additionally, the Arkham Knight adaptation was written by Peter Tomasi, who is...

In addition to half the cast turning to dust as a result of Thanos’ devastating snap, it’s hard not to feel for some of the survivors who were left behind in Avengers: Infinity War to contemplate their failure and mourn the loss of their friends.
But one character whose pain often gets overlooked is Guardians of the Galaxy star Rocket Raccoon. If you think about it, he may have actually had it the worst. His friend Gamora’s one of the first major casualties of the movie and then the rest of his colleagues find themselves disintegrated in the genocidal climax. It’s a tragedy that’s foreshadowed earlier during the pic but that doesn’t mean it hurts any less to watch the beloved character lose everyone who’s close to him.
It remains to be seen, of course, just what he’ll be up to when we see him next,...

Lights! Camera! Action! This week I am talking movie tie ins and movie adaptation comics.
In the old days the show was firmly on the other foot when it came to comics and movies. A big summer blockbuster would be released and behind the scenes the comics publishers would be battling it out to land the rights to continue the adventures in the four colour format. I actually got into comics via a movie tie in. The glamorous version of events I tell people is the X-Men movie got me to go to a Forbidden Planet and Wolverine #157-160 were my first comics but in fact it started the summer before that with an X-Men movie comic. You hear stories of people like Kevin Smith and most current comic creator who were collecting in the mid 80′s to early 90′s saying they left comics behind when they hit puberty. Well...

The Punisher season 2 introduces a very different version of Jigsaw to the Marvel Netflix universe. We get back to his roots...
You ever see a list of the top Punisher villains? Probably not, because, thanks to the skill and dedication of Frank Castle, most Punisher villains tend to die very quickly in really horrible ways. It’s difficult to maintain a functioning rogues gallery when your whole mission involves blasting them into bad guy McNuggets at every oportunity.
There are some exceptions, however, the most notable of which is Billy "Jigsaw" Russo. Last season, Punisher’s arch nemesis Billy Russo had his visage horrifically carved up in the season finale, and he returns in The Punisher season 2 as a very different take on Jigsaw. His entry to the world of the sadly dwindling Marvel Netflix series of shows should be memorable and potentially violent.
Played by Ben Barnes,...

Electric Warriors is the first step towards expanding the cosmic end of the DC Universe in a long time.
I know I've yammered on about the Legion of Super-Heroes a lot here. The Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning Legion Lost was my first experience with the team, and it came right as I was getting back into comics, so it will always hold a fond place in my heart. I even hunted down the entire DnA run on the Legion, the only complete run of back issues I've got that I pieced together, rather than buying monthly.
So I assume that's why, when DC had an exclusive preview of Electric Warriors #1, a comic advertised as taking place during the Great Disaster that wiped most records of the world from history for the Legion of the 31st century, they came here to send it to you. Because they...

Dan Abnett tells us all about the craziness in store for Titans during the Drowned Earth event and we have an exclusive Titans #28 preview!
Dan Abnett casts a long shadow in comics. Almost no one this side of James Gunn and his co-writer at the time, Andy Lanning, is more responsible for the Guardians of the Galaxy we all love on the big screen, and as a solo writer, he's had as much influence as anybody on the world of Aquaman. He's also been helming Titans, the post-Rebirth book that has followed the first wave of sidekicks who seem to be at the center of the Rebirth mystery. And now, between Batman, Heroes in Crisis, and Drowned Earth they're also all mostly dead or battling intergalactic ocean deities.

Which Marvel comics should you read before (or after) Avengers: Infinity War? We have a definitive reading guide for you!
Avengers: Infinity War brings fans the first extended appearance on screen of Thanos, a character with a surprisingly rich history for someone who was created as a ripoff of Darkseid/musing on the concept of nihilism by a bunch of really stoned teenagers - honestly, I'm not sure which one I'm supposed to cross out there. Thanos was both of those things, and so much more, and he became one of the Marvel Universe's most feared villains almost as soon as he burst on the scene.

Okay, so I haven’t written musings on my feelings on fandom in quite a bit, so here goes nothing!
Marvel’s Secret Empire event has received a lot of flack for continuing the storyline of Captain America as a secret Hydra agent. Much of that flack has revolved around the notion that Cap being associated with Hydra is an affront to co-creator Jack Kirby, a Jewish man and a World War II veteran. By having Cap be associated with Hydra, it goes against the creator’s intent.
But – how much so we actually care about a creator’s intent?
From my experiences, it seems we don’t really care that much about a creator’s original intent if the story is considered good. A prominent example is how Gene Roddenberry was opposed to the idea of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (or at least some reported it as such...

Hi, welcome, my name’s Kieran and I’ve joined Nerdly for a new/rebooted weekly column talking about some of the best comics every week in quick-hit, bite-sized chunks to give you an idea of what to grab at your local comic shop/digital comics provider. This week is a massive week for number one issues, so what better way to celebrate the start of a new chapter of Panel Discussion than to highlight some of these awesome debut issues.
Marvel has a really strong week this week for #1s, the most impressive of which is Saladin Ahmed and Christian Ward’s Black Bolt #1 which sees The Silent King trapped in a cosmic prison with his only ally being Crusher Creel Aka The Absorbing Man. I’ve been rather critical of Marvel’s recent trend of hiring novelists over comics writers, but Ahmed shows an immediate understanding of the...

'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' with Chris Pratt as Chris Pratt Star-Lord a.k.a. Peter Quill and Drax (voice by Dave Bautista): When 'the pressure to be good isn't as intense as the pressure to not be bad.' 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2': Entertaining pop culture references help to alleviate James Gunn's 'weight of obligation' Pull up a chair, gather your friends, and warm up those texting thumbs: the hour is nigh for our biannual ritual of packing ourselves into theaters and watching the ultra-caffeinated exploits of whichever Marvel superheroes we're obligated to obsess over this time. Punishment for non-compliance is harsh; your Facebook feed will be clogged with posts about a topic to which you are indifferent, the modern definition of social pariah. This time, it's Guardians of the Galaxy, a second-tier Marvel property whose refreshingly saucy first film, released in 2014, earned $773 million worldwide.

This review is based off a volume that collects Guardians of the Galaxy (2008) #1, Guardians of the Galaxy (2013) #0.1-1 and Rocket Raccoon (2014) #1.
Confession time: I have no love for the Guardians of the Galaxy characters, and my excitement level for their upcoming movie is nearly at zero. Having said that, it shouldn’t surprise you that Rocket and Groot’s charm has no effect on me. I know, I’m made of stone. But, if you can put characters in a story or package that seems intriguing to me, I’ll give it a chance. In this case, it happens to be a treasury edition.
If memory serves me correctly, I’ve never owned something like this. So, when this beauty came across my desk, I knew I had to read and review it. Measuring about one and a half times the height and length of your average comic book, I...

It’s still fairly early in the game for James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The sequel is in the process of shooting in Atlanta, Georgia, and although this quirky entry in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe mostly takes place in the depths of outer space, one of the locations featured in the film looks to be very earth-bound indeed.
In the first Guardians of the Galaxy, it’s revealed that Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) spent his formative years, before the abduction, in the fictional town of St. Charles, Missouri. For the sequel, Disney and Marvel have lovingly recreated St. Charles in Cartersville, Georgia for the shoot. Although it doesn’t appear that Peter Quill or his cohorts, Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Rocket Racoon (Bradley Cooper), Groot (Vin Diesel), or Drax (Dave Bautista) were on hand for the filming, some serious action took place in downtown Cartersville.

Captain America: Civil War is in post-production, Doctor Strange is about to go before the cameras, and now Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is just beginning to ramp up for its distant May 5, 2017 release. Last week, Pom Klementieff joined the principal cast in a yet-to-be-confirmed role. The word is Klementieff is playing Mantis, the green-skinned anntenaed “Celestial Madonna” familiar to hardcore Avengers comics fans (and a favorite creation of comic writer Steve Englehart). Mantis was a member of the Guardians under Dan Abnett, Andy Lanning, and Paul Pelletier’s 2008 comic book reinvention of the team, which in turn inspired the movie. She has an almost ludicrously convoluted history as a character, filled with death, doppelgangers, false pregnancies, real...

Earlier today, the final guild precursor was revealed, as the Writers Guild of America (or WGA) announced their nominees. It was basically the final big card left to fall before it’s solely up to Academy voters to make up their minds and send in their ballots (the Directors Guild of America won’t announce until after the Oscar nominations). WGA always rules some big contenders ineligible, and that was again the case this year (as I’ll briefly address below), but of the titles that were cited this year, it was a mix of expected contenders like Boyhood and Gone Girl with slightly more unexpected citations like Guardians of the Galaxy and Nightcrawler. Also, Whiplash was nominated in Original, while it’s now going to be competing in Adapted at the Academy Awards (if it’s nominated), but more on that tomorrow… Before I reveal the full list of nominees,...

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has announced their nominees for their yearly awards and I'm very happy to report that Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" received a nod! Woot woot!
It was one of my favorite movies of 2014 (see my Top 10 here) and I'm glad that its zippy, entertaining, but highly heartfelt script is nominated.
I'm also elated that Dan Gilroy's "Nightcrawler" received a nod! That character-driven piece is all about writing (those soliloquies!) that gave Jake Gyllenhaal a great background to play with and director Gilroy (who also wrote the script) a fantastic material to helm!
Winners of the 2015 Writers Guild Awards will be revealed on Feb. 14th! I wonder who will receive a great Valentine from the WGA? Stay tuned...

People often ask me why I don’t include the Writers Guild of America in the “top guilds” when it comes to discussing awards, but the answer is very simple, with this morning’s nominations being a prime example. Every year, because of their silly and narrow-minded rules, they leave out several contenders for their screenplay awards, and this year is no exception.
Among the nominees, you’ll find most of what was expected, including The Grand Budapest Hotel, Boyhood, and Gone Girl. However, because certain films didn’t follow the WGA’s rules, you won’t find The Theory of Everything, Selma, or, most importantly, Birdman. The only reason I was looking forward to these awards this year was because they would help settle the matter of which original screenplay has the lead going into the Oscars, with Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel being practically neck and neck...
