How many wonders can one cavern hold?
It's been 25 years since The Little Mermaid has been a part of our world and in honor of the film's silver anniversary we're revealing seven "treasures untold" about the Disney classic.

7. I spy Mickey Mouse and friends!
In the opening scene when Ariel's father King Triton arrives at the arena, you can briefly see Mickey Mouse, Goofy and Donald Duck in the crowd of sea-people. Don't blink because you might miss them!
6."Part of Your World" was almost cut from the movie.
Ariel almost lost her big solo number after the song didn't test well with children in early screenings. Thankfully, another screening was set up and was a greater success with an adult audience. Could you imagine the film without that song?

Hard to imagine, but there was a time, before the release of "The Little Mermaid," when even Disney's own studio chief didn't expect much from the movie because it was a "girl's film." But Jeffrey Katzenberg was happy to be proved wrong when the film was released 25 years ago this week (on November 17, 1989).
"The Little Mermaid" was not only an enormous critical and commercial success, but it also launched a creative renaissance in Disney's animated features (including such modern classics as "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Lion King") and a wave of princess-mania that continues to this day.
Still, as many times as you or your kids have watched "Little Mermaid" (probably many, many, many times), there's a lot you may not know about it, including who almost starred in it, who the characters were drawn to look like, and what was really up with that scene of the bishop with the bulging pants.

Today we have another fantastic set of character art from Isaiah Stephens featuring more Disney characters reimagined as geek culture heroes. He calls the series "Disney Halloween," and you can see some of the other art from the series here and here. This latest collection of illustrations is more geared toward the male characters in the Disney universe. I only included one new princess as a character from Game of Thrones.
Aladdin and Abu as Ash Ketchum and Pikachu
Aurora as Daenerys Targaryen
John Smith as Johnny Bravo
Li Shang as Mako
Milo Thatch as The Doctor (Tennant)
Prince Naveen as Captain Jack Sparrow
Peter Pan as Link
Prince Philip as Indiana Jones
Prince Charming, Prince Eric, and Prince Florian as Sam, Castiel, and Dean from Supernatural...

Films with great women’s roles aren’t always great films. Films with poor female representation aren’t necessarily bad films. But poorly written female roles will always be a problem for cinema so long as they continue to persist. The damsel in distress. Angel-whore. The token girl. Trophy wives. Mother, daughter, sister. The unconditional love interest. These are among the popular clichés most frequently applied to female characters as they’re written on the page. Some films are so desperate for conflict that they just keep going to the well without altering the mold. Have women not earned the right by now to play more villains, complicated lovers, a-holes, The Best Friends, soldiers, comic reliefs or leads? Can a woman be sexy in a film and still have a great role? Yes. Give her agency. Can a woman support other characters but still have a great role? Yes. Keep her vital.

The best movie culture writing from around the internet-o-sphere. There will be a quiz later. Just leave a tab open for us, will ya? “Inside the Pitch Meeting for Maleficent” — Eric D. Snider nails another perfectly transcribed, incredibly funny meeting of the minds that gave us a live-action feature retelling the story of Disney’s 18th most popular movie villain. “Maleficent‘s Costume Designer on De-Sexualizing Elle Fanning’s Disney Princess” — Julie Miller at Vanity Fair looks at the work done to make a young girl seem like a young girl. “In retrospect, Disney was sending some sartorial mixed messages about Sleeping Beauty in its eponymous 1959 animated film. In theory, Princess Aurora was cared for—and by extension, dressed by—a trio of eccentric fairies in the forest until the age of 16. But in reality, she was being costumed by Disney’s animation director Marc Davis, who gave the fairy tale teen a chiseled hourglass figure, nary...

Is there a Joker curse? Beyond The Joker:The Man Who Laughs attempts to answer this question by examining the clown as an archetype throughout history. The story starts out by detailing Heath Ledger’s experience during the shooting of The Dark Knight up to his tragic death after the film wrapped. The book then jumps to 1802 the year that Joseph Grimaldi created the familiar white-face look that we still associate with clowns today. Grimaldi it seems was the prototypical “sad clown” hiding his tears behind a smile and eventually a bottle. The story makes it’s way to John Wayne Gacy the serial killer who famously worked as a clown when he...

Magical Disney characters attending Hogwarts makes a kind of logical sense, but what about the muggles? Artist Annabella, aka Eira1893, gives no clear answer on that but does give us some really fun art. My only wish is that these pieces didn't have the ragged border.
Annabella should do Disney villains as Hogwarts headmasters. That would be pretty cool to see.

Want to know what your favorite Disney characters would look like if they were real? Artist Avalonis has taken some real life famous features as reference points and pieced them together to show us what they might look like in the real world. Here's a note from from the artist,
These are what Disney characters would look like if they were real. Lots of references (see if you can spot some famous features). Lots of manipulations and perfecting until I got the right features and made them real enough looking.
If some don't look exactly like the characters, well cut me some slack, there's not a lot of people out there that look like some of the more ridiculously proportioned Disney characters (Hercules, Cruella, villains etc). Also, I made them as realistic as possible. See if you can guess who is who...
I think the artist did a pretty good job with these.

Last year I made a list of my 50 most anticipated movies of 2013, but this year I struggled putting together a list of 40. The kind of movies I used to anticipate don't get me brimming with excitement as much as they saturate the market and we can fully expect to see one nearly every weekend and this year it starts early with Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit on January 17. So no need to anticipate them, they'll be here soon enough, but I've already discussed all this, no need to trod the same path over again. My list would have also been easier to make had I not already seen six films you may want to add to your list of most anticipated: Dom Hemingway (April 4) Read My Review Enemy (March 14) Read My Review Ernest & Celestine (March 14) Only Lovers Left Alive (April 11) Read My Review Under the Skin (April 4) Read My Review Venus...

Walt Disney Animation Studios has become, in its relative old age, both charmingly and cripplingly self-conscious. Each new entry seems to quiver in the shadow of the greats, the vaunted classics that have become untouchable for many. The studio just celebrated the 85th anniversary of Steamboat Willie, the short whose iconic image—Mickey whistling a happy tune while commandeering a rickety skiff—appears in its logo; however, Disney animation continues to remain at a creative crossroads. Once Pixar honcho John Lasseter was brought aboard as Disney’s chief creative consultant in the mid-2000s, he declared that hand-drawn animation was no longer dead and forgotten by the company that proved the form’s importance for so many decades. So, in 2009, Disney dipped into the well of fairy tales and princesses once more after what felt like an eternity,...

ABC released the first official promo for the Nov. 3 episode, which features the underwater frenemies’ big debut!
Of all the classic fairytales Once Upon A Time has woven into its increasingly complicated universe, The Little Mermaid has definitely been the most highly anticipated — and at long last, the wait is almost over! JoAnna Garcia flips her fins for the first time on the show’s Nov. 3 episode as mer-princess Ariel, and as we saw in this first promo, the story’s infamous sea witch will also be making a surprising appearance.
I say “surprising” because, in typical Once fashion, the eight-limbed enemy will be presented a little differently than you might remember. In this version, Ursula will be played by Lana Parrilla, similarly to the way Once‘s Beast doubled as Rumpelstiltskin (Robert Carlyle).
The promo also reveals Ariel’s first on-land meeting with Prince Eric (Gil McKinney), which we...

Mermaids and Lost Boys and sexual tension, oh my! Season three is already off to an epic start, thanks to tonight’s revealing — and deadly — premiere. Spoilers ahead!
The journey to save Henry (Jared Gilmore) began on the Sept. 29 season premiere of Once Upon A Time, and the motley crew of saviors quickly learned that getting to Neverland was the easy part. Surviving in Neverland? That’s a completely different story.
Let’s start with the mermaids, shall we? The Neverland seas are apparently crawling with ‘em, and while they may be pretty on the outside, their insides are uglier than Rumpelstiltskin’s complexion. A combination of cannons and fireballs proved enough to chase the mermaids away, though the gang decided to keep one and try to make her talk.
Unfortunately, things just got worse from there.
The lone ‘maid summoned a powerful storm fueled by the gang’s hate for one another,...

So far this year, Post Mortem Press (Pmp) has traveled across the country, debuted at the World Horror Convention in New Orleans, and published new fiction. In part two of our interview (read part one here), Publisher Eric Beebe briefly talks about making films and what it's like to travel to places both known and unknown. FEARnet: Will Pmp expand into other areas as well? Eric Beebe: Well, we've put our toes in the water for films. One short story, “Out in the Cold” by Joe Williams, which is in a book called Detroit Macabre, has already been made into a short film. If you remember, several years ago there were these short commercials imported from Detroit – they had Eminem in them and a hip-hop beat in the background. Last night’s flashback-tastic New Girl episode, “Virgins,” was a treasure trove of music to set the mood — some songs more successfully than others — as the loftmates looked back on their first sexual encounters. Anchoring the eclectic mix (which ranged from Sublime to Boyz II Men and even figured in Lisa Loeb), Ellie Goulding’s “Anything Could Happen” kicked in during a fan-fulfilling scene between Nick (Jake Johnson) and Jess (Zooey Deschanel).
It got us thinking of some of our favorite first-time anthems from shows of yore. Below, our ultimate Spotify playlist of coupling tracks!

2. Favorite quotes or scenes from "Prime Suspect"?
Steve: Gibbs at the barber shop talking with his old friend. I love any insight into how the man spends his time, even if it's just a few quick scenes of Haircut Tuesday. Also when he called his dad.
Doug: I enjoyed watching Dorneget and Tony fighting it out while Melissa watched them, interpreting their spat as a lover's quarrel.

The annual St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase is a great way to support the many local filmmakers who practice their art in our area. Cinema St. Louis, our city’s non-profit cinema-related event planning group, will present The Whitaker St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase July 8-12. This is the 12th annual presentation, which serves as the area’s primary venue for films made by local artists. The Showcase screens works that were written, directed, edited, or produced by St. Louis natives or films with strong local ties. The 16 film programs that screen at the Tivoli from July 8-12 serve as the Showcase’s centerpiece. The programs range from full-length fiction features and documentaries to multi-film compilations of fiction and documentary shorts. Many programs include post-screening Q&As with filmmaker. It all ends with a closing-Night Awards Party Thursday July 12th sponsored by Stella Artois from 8 p.m. to midnight at Blueberry Hill‘s Duck Room,...

True Blood returns this week in all its fang-popping, shape-shifting, trou-dropping glory for another season of vampires, werewolves, brujos, shifters, waitresses, witches, and whatever the hell poor Terry Bellefleur thinks he is this week.
So it's interesting that, aside from the much-heralded arrival of True newbie Christopher Meloni as the head of the vampire Authority, we know very little about what the hell is actually going to be splashing across our screens come 9pm Sunday.
So to prepare, I took it upon myself to go through HBO's two teaser trailers frame-by-frame and try to piece together what the eff is going on amidst all the hissing, screaming, blood-crying, exploding, fang-popping and shirtless Jason Stackhouse. Then I picked the 10 images that, try as I might, I can't get out of my head.
Haven't seen the trailers yet? Check 'em out, and then join me after to discuss!
Okay, let's get to work.

Biebs takes home Moonman for 'U Smile' video.

Justin Bieber accepts the award for Best Male Video at the 2011 VMAs

Eminem showed no fear last year at the MTV Video Music Awards, nabbing Best Male Video for "Not Afraid" over Drake, Usher and B.o.B. But in 2011, fearless, lie-loving Eminem was no match for the feverish smile of Justin Bieber.
The Biebs took home the win for "U Smile," winning out over Em's "Love the Way You Lie," Cee Lo Green's "F--- You," Bruno Mars' "Grenade" and Kanye West's "All of the Lights."
After presenter Kim Kardashian announced his name, Bieber popped up, snagged a smooch with girlfriend Selena Gomez, and headed up onstage, where he delivered a heartfelt message about the role of a higher power in his ascendance to the top of the young pop crop.

Question: Got any Private Practice scoop? —Jamie
Ausiello: Something happens during the season premiere that tickles the funny bone of the man upstairs, because sources confirm that the title of the hour is “God Laughs.” I can’t imagine he’ll be giggling in the opening minutes, however. I hear the episode picks up right where the finale left off — with Pete on the floor clutching his chest.

"At first it was about neighborhood," begins Eric Hynes in the Voice. "Then it was about stars, parties, and supersizing. But finally, for its 10th incarnation, the Tribeca Film Festival (April 20-May 1) seems to be about movies. Gone are the superfluous, attention-sucking Hollywood premieres (Tom Cruise on a Jet Ski, anyone?), and few are the big-name, low-quality vanity projects. Several years into a vital slimming of the slate — the fest topped out at 176 films in 2005; this year, it's a manageable 93 — Tff remains New York's largest film survey."
To celebrate Tribeca's 10th, we're running a retrospective of some of the best films the festival's shown over the past decade here at Mubi. Happy viewing.
"A notoriously uneven assemblage of titles, Tribeca aspires toward something like a mini Toronto, but despite, in recent years, bringing such important films as Jia Zhangke's Still Life and Mohammad Rasoulof's The White Meadows...

Gilles Jacob and Thierry Frémaux announced that, out of 1715 submissions, 49 features from 33 countries have been selected in total for this year's Cannes Film Festival — four of them made by women, a record. 19 titles are lined up for the Competition so far, leaving room for surprise announcements from here on to the Opening Ceremony on May 11.
Competition
Pedro Almodóvar's The Skin I Inhabit. As noted yesterday, here's what Variety's Justin Chang had heard as of this past weekend: "In late March, it seemed that Almodóvar, a Cannes veteran who won prizes for All About My Mother and Volver, might skip the event altogether this year. Since 2004's Bad Education, the helmer has presented every one of his films in competition at the May fest, usually following a spring local release. Many of the top 13 stumbled this week, and we're not grading on a curve.

Listen up, "American Idol" students! You've got to show up to class every single week, and by that we don't just mean filling a seat onstage and snoozing through the competition. We mean coming prepared. We mean building on previous performances, displaying artistic growth, and wowing us anew.
Alas, that's not what happened with most of the "Idol" contestants on Wednesday's (March 9) show, and all we have to say to those slackers is that we're not upset, we're just disappointed. After generally strong performances last week, many of the top 13 stumbled. Now, it's report card time, and it's not going to be pretty.
Excellent

Heading into its 18th year in 2011, the Chicago Underground Film Festival is the longest-running underground film festival in the world. It used to be tied with the New York Underground Film Festival — both were started in 1994 — until Nyuff closed up shop in 2008.
In 1994, the Internet wasn’t the big promotional tool it is today so neither Nyuff nor Cuff that year had a website; or, if they did, those pages have since vanished off the web. So, details about what these fests screened in their first years have been sketchy. Well, until now for Cuff.
I’m not sure how I stumbled upon it, but I recently discovered that the alternative newsweekly the Chicago Reader had posted up the entire, full lineup of the first annual Chicago Underground Film Festival.
So, I copied that info and reformatted it into the style of Bad Lit’s traditional film festival lineups, which...

Winning accolades and fans across the festival circuit for the past year, and comparisons to material as far and wide as Ken Loach and The Sopranos (although in all fairness it is neither of those things, more like deader-than-deadpan Coen Brothers absurdity) Down Terrace has been playing in limited release for a month, and is opening in Canada commercially at the Carlton Theatre in Toronto (before expanding out to Vancouver) November 12th. I have been shamelessly been sitting on a lengthy chat with writer/director Ben Wheatley while the film played at the Fantasia Film Festival back in July. He left his copy of Sight & Sound behind as he took off to the airport after our conversation, which I scored (snack-cake!) but don't tell him. A prolific advertisement and TV director, he is as film literate and verbose has one would expect from a genre-mashing drama/comedy/gangster picture with literate and verbose characters.

Detroit Mc puts on an energizing set, as Big Boi, Dmx, House of Pain, Bush, Kiss and more hit the stage on day 1 of eclectic California rock festival.

Fontana, California - Detroit descended upon California as Eminem made a triumphant return to the West Coast at the Epicenter 2010 Festival on Saturday. Marshall Mathers performed just before fellow Motor City mavens Kiss, and what the rapper lacked in pyro he more than made up in fanfare. Still one of the biggest-selling artists in the world, Epicenter was one of only a handful of concerts Em put on in 2010. Cali happily welcomed Eminem back, roaring, dancing and rapping their approval.
Epicenter's first of two days was marked by sweltering heat in the 100s and a handful of performers whose absence from the stage was even longer than Slim Shady's self-imposed hiatus.
