Before becoming one of the leading directors of our time, Alex Garland made a name for himself in the literary field. His debut novel The Beach was translated into 25 languages and later made into a movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
The author wasn’t particularly involved in the film adaptation, but Danny Boyle found out about Garland and hired him as a screenwriter for his future innovative zombie horror film 28 Days Later, which became the writer’s ticket to the world of big cinema.
Now his fifth directorial project has been released – the large-scale military dystopia Civil War, A24's most expensive project and, according to many critics, Garland's best work.
Garland's Directing Career Began With an Undeniable Success
However, the beginning of Alex Garland's directorial career was no less successful – in 2014, his debut sci-fi thriller Ex Machina was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and won a statuette for Best Visual Effects.

Given their close-knit relationship as global entertainment industries, gaming and the movies have long had a symbiotic connection. Movie tie-in games, for instance, have been a popular feature in gaming for decades, with numerous short-form releases over the years attempting to distil linear, cinematic storylines into interactive ones — albeit with varying success.
A Brief History of Gaming and the Movies
Of course, it’s not been uncommon over the years for studios to churn out poor quality movie-tie in titles that barely represent the characters and narratives we’ve fallen for on the big screen. However, there have been some outright successes and unexpected releases in alternative gaming genres.
In addition to being video game franchises, movies have even inspired online casino games and plenty of other activities throughout the iGaming sector. IP such as King Kong, Jurassic Park and even The Lord of The Rings have all been transformed...

Exclusive: Hereditary and Midsommar director Ari Aster, an exec producer on upcoming Cannes ensemble comedy Rumours, has called the film “stoopid and hilarious and wonderful” as the production reveals an official first look.
Oscar winners Cate Blanchett and Alicia Vikander star with Roy Dupuis, Charles Dance, Denis Ménochet, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Rolando Ravello, Takehiro Hira and Zlatko Burić star in the movie that follows seven leaders of the world’s wealthiest liberal democracies at the annual G7 summit after they become lost in the woods and face increasing peril while attempting to draft a provisional statement regarding a global crisis.
Some sites have been reporting the provisional statement is about the climate crisis, which we hear is inaccurate.
The intriguing official first image (above) shows Roy Dupuis as the Prime Minister of Canada and Alicia Vikander as the President of the European Commission. The other roles are being kept under wraps.

In notching A24’s highest-grossing opening weekend to date, Alex Garland’s debate-stirring combat film Civil War has made plenty of noise — both figuratively and literally.
Starring Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny and Wagner Moura, the project has spurred conversation over its depiction of a small group of journalists witnessing the violently divided U.S. en route to collecting $25.7 million at the domestic box office this weekend. Among the buzziest elements of the film has been its sound design, as Civil War’s use of jarring battle noise, along with the impactful contrast between its onslaught of gunfire and moments of dead silence. It all adds to the chaos and tension.
Civil War supervising sound editor Glenn Freemantle, an Oscar winner for 2013’s Gravity, tells The Hollywood Reporter that he and frequent collaborator Garland were in lockstep in how to best create the film’s dystopian world.

Vertical has acquired U.S. rights to “Bucky F*cking Dent,” a father-son story set against the 1978 Red Sox vs. Yankees pennant race.
The movie was written, directed by and stars David Duchovny. It also happens to be based on Duchovny’s 2016 best-selling novel of the same name. The cast of “Bucky F*cking Dent” includes Logan Marshall-Green (“Spider-Man: Homecoming”), Stephanie Beatriz (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”), Jason Beghe (“Chicago P.D.”), Evan Handler (“Californication”) with Daphne Rubin-Vega (“In the Heights”) and Pamela Adlon (“King of Staten Island”). The film is produced by Yale Productions’ Jordan Yale Levine and Jordan Beckerman, as well as Duchovny.
“Bucky F*cking Dent” had its world premiere at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival. The release date is slated for later this year.
The film follows Ted (Marshall-Green), a failed writer-turned-Yankees Stadium peanut seller who moves back home after learning of the failing health of his Red Sox-obsessed father, Marty (David Duchovny). While...

By taking home the 2024 Best Actor Oscar for “Oppenheimer,” Cillian Murphy blazed a trail as the first Irish-born lead performer ever honored by the film academy. Prior to his victory, there had not been a native Irish acting winner in over 30 years nor any from his city of Cork, as the only earlier examples had involved supporting winners and fellow Dubliners Barry Fitzgerald and Brenda Fricker. His historic achievement brings the total number of different countries that have produced acting champs during the last decade to eight.
As has been the case throughout practically all of Oscars history, the United States is by far the dominant birthplace among the 2015-2024 acting winners. Of the group’s 37 unique members, 26 (or 70.3%) originate from there, including newly-crowned victors Emma Stone (“Poor Things”), Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”), and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”). It is very rare for a married couple to be nominated for acting Oscars in the same year, but it has happened four times – including in 2022!
Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander were both nominated for acting Oscars in 2016, but they didn’t get married until one year later, so they don’t make the cut for this list.
Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons were both nominated for acting Oscars in 2022, but they weren’t married yet, so they aren’t included here as well.
There was a 55 year gap between last year and the last time a married couple was nominated together in the acting categories.

Given the back-to-back additions of Alicia Vikander and Viola Davis to the list of Best Supporting Actress Oscar winners with the five highest amounts of screen time, one might have reasonably expected subsequent recipients of the award to follow suit. However, since they all clocked in under 29 minutes, none of the last half dozen victors even cracked the top 30, and that trend is almost sure to continue in 2024. Indeed, all but one of the category’s five current hopefuls are nominated for performances that are shorter than at least half of the ones that have ever merited this honor.
The 2024 supporting actress nominees have an average screen time of 29 minutes and 48 seconds, or 22.97% of their respective films. These amounts are almost four minutes and over 3% greater than last year’s. In terms of physical time, their average is the 16th highest in the category’s 88-year history, while their percentage mean is the 25th highest.

Exclusive: United Talent Agency (UTA) has revealed it paid more than £43M ($55M) to acquire UK agent Curtis Brown in 2022, with its revenue surging on the back of the deal.
UTA acquired Curtis Brown’s parent company Original Talent Limited in June 2022, but did not disclose financial terms. Sources told Deadline at the time that the deal was worth $45M-$55M.
A financial filing from United Talent Agency UK Limited on Companies House has revealed that it paid £43.3M for 100% of the agency that reps stars including Ncuti Gatwa and Robert Pattinson.

Lily Gladstone made Oscar history as the first Native American to be nominated in the Best Actress category for her role in Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon.” While we thought she would try her luck in the featured category, she opted to campaign in lead. Her importance to the plot suggests that she is a co-star, despite her screen-time (especially in the second half of the film and compared to that of Leonardo DiCaprio).
It isn’t often that a performance that could go supporting is campaigned as a lead, but it’s happened in the past – even the very recent past.

Olivier Assayas, the celebrated French director of “Clouds of Sils Maria” and “Irma Vep,” is making his Berlinale competition debut this year with “Suspended Time,” his most personal film to date.
Speaking to Variety ahead of the movie’s premiere at the Berlinale, Assayas says the film retells his experience during the lockdown and is based on his personal diary.
“When I was writing this diary, I felt that despite my anxieties and doubts or fears, it was an idyllic period, to be confined in the countryside,” he says. “It was a time where we believed in a form of utopia and as soon as society got back in action, it dissolved.”
Narrated by Assayas and woven with archival material, the comedy stars Vincent Macaigne as the director’s alter-ego, Paul, a well-known filmmaker who is confined with his music journalist brother Etienne (Micha Lescot) and their girlfriends Morgane (Nine d’Urso...

Scarlett Johansson, Margot Robbie, Cate Blanchett, and Dave Bautista all star in projects at one of the biggest Berlin markets in recent memory, post and pre-pandemic.
Whether this year’s high-rollers will sell is the crux at a 2024 European Film Market which AGC Studios’ Stuart Ford is describing as a “watershed market.”
The big question is: “Was the tepid AFM an anomaly brought about by the strikes and a broader industry pullback in 2023? Or was the AFM an indicator of a more sustained downturn?” he asks.
It’s early days in 2024 but “signs for Berlin are quite positive,” says Ford, who is bringing to market three new star-driven thrillers starring Will Smith –action movie “Sugar Bandits” – Sylvester Stallone and Michelle Yeoh.
“One week ago, I would have said this is going to be a dry market. Now it’s going to be a busy market,” agrees Martin Moszkowicz at Constantin Film,...

Longtime Amblin Partners executive Mia Maniscalco has been tapped as president of Coin Operated, the production banner founded by horror multi-hyphenate Gary Dauberman.

In terms of how many biographical performances they each include, the 2023 and 2024 acting Oscar lineups are staggeringly different. Whereas only two portrayals of real people (Austin Butler as Elvis Presley in “Elvis” and Ana de Armas as Marilyn Monroe in “Blonde”) were recognized last year, a whopping 10 are presently nominated, constituting the highest such rate (50%) in five years. What’s more, this is only the third time in almost a century of Oscars history that real-life characters aren’t outnumbered by fictional ones.
This year’s near-record biographical performance rate ranks only behind the 60% ones of 2016 and 2019. Unsurprisingly, three of the four eventual winners in both previous cases belonged to those majorities. This includes leads Leonardo DiCaprio as Hugh Glass, Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury, and Olivia Colman as Queen Anne as well as supporting players Mark Rylance as Rudolf Abel, Alicia Vikander as Gerda Wegener, and Mahershala Ali as Don Shirley.
